PRESIDENT’S WELCOME WHAT A YEAR WE HAVE EXPERIENCED SO FAR!!! Coming through the Christmas and New Year celebrations relatively unscathed, apart from the normal amount of apologies, don’t ask me, I can’t remember! Finally managing to make some peace with and a farewell to the mother-in-law, including the handbag & its dog, before sinking quietly into the anticipation of a new season to come.
available and playing. What a mouth watering feast of football is install for us this season. We are delighted to just be a part of it, and look forward to Hobbo’s young tyros battling on and looking to upset the established pros and the more fancied sides.
BUT finally we are here, home at Shepherds Park and hosting game 3 of this years NRFL, and facing the mighty “Yellow-Yellow” of Central United. And they are very welcome too as every game against Central promises a quality football experience.
Our thanks go to Harcourts Cooper & Co, John Bull & Kemps Weir, for always being there and for enabling these magnificent outcomes and these fabulous experiences.
It is always a great occasion at Shepherds when we have a home NRFL game, but it is always worth remembering that it doesn’t Then, all-of-a-sudden, faster than a young Michael Owen run-through on goal, we are happen without the selfless efforts of a-lot of club volunteers and the unflinching support in lockdown. No NRFL, no Premier league, no Serie A, no La Liga, even no Bundesliga.... of our family of sponsors. As usual we owe a just gardening and walks down the middle great debt of gratitude and without these of the street, and yes with the handbag & its concerted efforts our ability to support our community and facilitate these sporting dog, as she came back to be a-part of our activities would be severely compromised. bubble!
Actually we can’t quite believe the quality of this years NRFL competition. Promoted clubs, new clubs and probably for the first time since the 80s, all the best players

COACH'S COMMENTS WELCOME TO KRIS AND THE CENTRAL UNITED SQUAD FOR OUR FIRST HOME MATCH OF THE 2020 LOTTO NRFL SEASON. Central have also made a good start to the season. We’re loving the strength of the league this year and it’s how it should be. There are a lot of the best players around playing with no easy games. We have made a solid start to the season so far, both games away from home and whilst we haven’t been spectacular, we’ve been solid and have a good mix of players. Most of this year’s squad is around the 18-21 age group with plenty of experience for reasonably youngish players.
Alex, Dan, Sean, Rob. Thanks for always coming back and playing for Birkenhead. We have added Brock Messenger from Hamilton Wanderers, Dino Botica from Wellington Phoenix and Nicholas Zambrano from Waitakere United. All 3 players are great fits at Birkenhead and already firm favourites with the rest of the squad and supporters. Two wins to start off the season but today is a different challenge. We have a great team of staff who are really making a great environment for young and older players to come and enjoy playing football. Chad, Shafiek, Matt, Graham, Dave and Marko.
We managed to keep most of last year’s squad, just Christian Gray and Alec Solomons moving on to the summer/winter combination at Suburbs which I personally To our supporters, sponsors and volunteers, agree is a good option for both players. welcome back to Shepherds Park for our first home game of 2020. We thank them both for their time here and both players go down in Birkenhead’s Your support is greatly appreciated by history books! all of the club. Hopefully you’re in for an entertaining, high-quality match this We have been lucky to get some of the afternoon. scholarship players back early this year, with no idea when they’re going back, we’re Paul Hobson enjoying having them in the squad. vs NORTH SHORE UNITED
vs FORREST HILL MILFORD
SATURDAY 20 JUNE ALLEN HILL STADIUM
SATURDAY 27 JUNE BEECROFT PARK
We actually dominated a rusty North Shore, but since the weekends game they have added some quality players and will definitely be there or about.
Newly promoted FHM at Beecroft always a tough game and a team we don’t always do great against. Tough pitch to play on size wise but in great condition.
We started brightly with Niko getting brought down in the box and taking the pen, putting us 1-0 up early on in the match. We had quite few chances but some great goalkeeping from The Shore keeper kept them in it. We then managed to get one on the counter, Alex slotting with a few mins to go to seal the 2-0 win.
We started really well and possibly could have been a couple up early before Alex Greive was taken down in the box with Judd baker scoring from the spot. We went 2 up after 65 with Alex finishing from a Zambrano cross. Unfortunately we lost Alex to a red card, meaning we just dug in for the last 25. With Dan Edwards producing some magic in the box and getting fouled for a pen. Luke Jorgensen smashing it home.

WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM BIRKENHEAD UNITED 1-0 PAPAKURA CITY
AFTER A GREAT PRE-SEASON WAS RUDELY INTERRUPTED WITH THE COVID-19 CRISIS, THE WOMEN’S 1ST TEAM WERE FINALLY ABLE TO GET BACK INTO ACTION. The squad has changed quite bit from last season with John Selby joined this season by Adam Edgar who was in charge of the Takapuna Women’s Div 2 side into a cocoaching role. Also the squad welcomes the two youngest members Hannah Edgar & Chantelle Woodhams-Hilt, along with fellow Takapuna newbies, Katrina Horsford, Nicola “Jonny” Aldridge, and Caitlin “Styx” Woods slotting in with the combined experience from last year’s stalwarts the team looks to have gained a new lease of life. The training has been intense, and the players have relished the challenges put before them (even if accompanied with some gnashing of teeth and the occasional wailing) Sunday saw the arrival of Papakura City, who judging by the state of Auckland’s motorway and traffic congestion would have probably had to leave on Saturday afternoon in order to arrive on time. Birkenhead looked resplendent in their newly arrived Kappa kit, proudly sponsored by John Bull, in fact almost as resplendent as the hallowed turf of Shepherds # 1, which looked like a carpet.
8
So there was no excuse for some exciting football not to take place!!! Both teams looked sharp in the warm up, and when the game kicked off, the opening stanza was as frenetic as Albany Mall opening for Level 1 shopping with the Birko ladies flying into everything. It wasn’t long before the Birko girls found their rhythm and began to spray the ball out wide, with both Amber “Ma” Baker and Lorna Selby making some impressive runs and delivering some great crosses, which unfortunately the Birko strikers were not quite able to finish off. Up top for Birkenhead was Jaiya Bharti who was looking dangerous and rattled the woodwork early doors, in fact the goalposts in the first half were probably the stand out player for Papakura… Naturally, it did settle down and both teams were trying to play decent football. In goal for Birkenhead was debutant Chantelle Woodhams-Hilt, who did not have too much to do as the back four of Nicola “Jonny” Aldridge, Hannah Edgar, Dani Anderson and Ioana “George” Manoa keeping things tight and tidy, as did Makayla “Makka” Williams who replaced Ioana at left back after Ioana picked up a knee niggle.
Birkenhead United AFC | 2020 Lotto NRFL Premiership
Birkenhead’s central midfield pairing of Shannen “Micky” Finnigan, and Maddi Miller were everywhere and anywhere with both players putting in a great shift, they were ably supported by Katrina “Kat” Horsford who offered a bit of extra support from her false #9 position. After much huffing and puffing the first half came to an end with things wrapped up 0-0, but Birkenhead were by far the dominant team. The Birkenhead team started off well and it was soon one way traffic again, with the new goalkeeper for Papakura keeping Papakura in the game. The Birkenhead midfield were able to spray some great passes out wide, and Lorna Selby was rampant down the left, unfortunately some wayward shooting in the attacking third was the only small disappointment. The good news however was we were creating lots of chances and the training ground drills were certainly paying dividends!! The breakthrough came with a great move down the right hand side, with a fierce strike on goal from Jaiya Bharti which the Papakura keeper could only parry into the path of marauding Lorna Selby who was on hand to smash it into the back of the net, to make it 1-0 to Birkenhead. In fairness to Papakura, who were reduced to 10 players due to an injury, battled gallantly and did cause a few nervous
birkenheadunited.org.nz
@BirkenheadUnitedAFC
moments for Birkenhead later on in the 2nd half. Thankfully, the girls were able to see off any Papakura attacks and deservedly held on for a well earned three points. Player of the Day for Birkenhead was Nicola “Jonny” Aldridge, for her excellent performance at right back, well done Nic!!! The only down side of the afternoon were the two injuries picked up by Ioana and Cynthia Saijaipadoi who incidentally both had great games when on the pitch. As with everything it is not what we have done, but what we do next that counts. The coaches are really keen to engage with any up and coming Birkenhead girls who have a desire to play for the first team and get them involved in the training and possibly draft in to the squad for the experience. Growing talent from within is well recognised with the Men’s First team set up, and the coaching staff is keen to utilise the same strategy. If interested please get in touch with John Selby. Our next game is on 05/07/2020 at home, which will be another tricky encounter against Norwest United. Please come along and show your support for the Women’s First Team who play at home every second Sunday at 1pm Shepherds Park.
