PRESIDENT’S WELCOME WELCOME TO SHEPHERDS PARK FOR ROUND 9 OF THE NRFL AND THE VISIT OF WAITAKERE CITY. If we have learnt anything from the last few weeks, it is that reputations don’t hold for much and only a point separates 3rd from 7th. So, this will be a contest to savour!
for. Waitakere City reserves are right behind them in 3rd place on goal difference alone so this should offer us a great taster of a game before the main event!
A storming start to the season for Paul’s young team has, over the last three fixtures, hit the speedbump of two losses on the road and a draw at home. If we needed reminding at all, about the closeness of this year’s competition, it’s now been reinforced and underlined twice, in thick red pen!
Our U17s Metro team also lie 2nd, one win off Bucklands Beach, our U15 Metro team lie mid-table as do the U14s and of course our top women’s team are setting new examples for all of our girls in the club to follow, as they battle for a place at the top of the championship.
So, the position of Waitakere City, sitting in 12th, on the bottom of the table coming into this game, should offer us no consolation at all. We are at a juncture of the season, with only three games to go before the top 6 / bottom 6 split, when all we need to do now is to win and win and win again. It is a focus that leaves everything in our own hands and makes us masters of our own destiny.
We occasionally need to pinch ourselves, if only to be reminded that, for a local community club we continue to “punch above our weight”, with the experience of success in the Chatham Cup different to but equal to the experience of an early Saturday morning start to witness the mass of swarming midget footballers racing across Shepherds Park, tearing into exuberant competition, while their parents crowd the barista under the balcony!
So, while it is excitement of a nail-biting flavour in the NRFL Premiership, elsewhere across the club teams are rising to ever greater heights. In the Premier reserves, our very young development team currently sit in 2nd place, on goal difference, just one win behind Central and with everything to play

COACH'S COMMENTS WELCOME TO TOMMY AND WAITAKERE CITY TO SHEPHERDS PARK FOR ROUND NINE OF THE 2020 LOTTO NRFL SEASON. We’re coming of a poor run of results, we’ll be looking to turn that around today.
entertaining performance and pick up all three points this afternoon.
After a strong start to the season, picking up some good results against some of the top sides in the league – we’ve found ourselves slip down to mid table after struggling to pick up a win in our last four matches.
To our supporters, sponsors and volunteers, welcome back to Shepherds Park for our second home game of the season.
We’ve been playing well in most of these matches, although a few sloppy errors and lapses in concentration has cost us at times. However, with the league being so tightly contested this season, there’s only three points separating 3rd place from 10th. So every point counts in that push for the all important Top 6, making this afternoon’s match even more exciting.
Your support is greatly appreciated by all of the club. Hopefully you’re in for an entertaining, high-quality match this afternoon. Enjoy the game! Paul Hobson Birkenhead United Head Coach
From all involved at the club, we would like to extend a massive Happy Birthday to today’s mascot, Freddie. We hope you have a great day and hopefully we can put on an

SATURDAY 1 AUGUST SHEPHERDS PARK
SATURDAY 8 AUGUST OLYMPIC PARK
Another entertaining match in front of a good home crowd here at Shepherds Park.
Last Saturday was a disappointing loss to a Bay Olympic side who were well up for the contest on the day.
Nico Zambrano scored for us in the first half, although we went into the break 2-1 down against a spirited Manukau United side. In the dying seconds of the match (97th minute), Eman Darkwa equalised for us from within our own half! I’m sure you’ve seen the goal all over Twitter... GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 2 (Cromb & Darkwa)
Every match is currently a ‘six-pointer’ as the league is so closely contested, so we’ll be looking to improve on this performance and start picking up points again in the coming weeks. GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 0 MAN OF THE MATCH: Nico Zambrano

WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM BIRKENHEAD UNITED WAIHEKE UNITED
her magic Powerade, with a masterclass of man-marking, passing, and ball control, all of which were in a league of their own!! After last week’s disappointment against Bucklands it was a great way to bounce back to winning ways.
3 0
Our first “overseas” adventure started with a brisk start, a lumpy ferry ride, a magical mystery bus tour, and the world’s most expensive taxi ride for one of the coaches! The girl’s trip to Waiheke had all the elements of a potential banana skin game, as Waiheke seemed to have a varying degree of success at home versus away, and Birkenhead a bit deflated after the loss to Bucklands Beach. So a slightly cautious vibe was the order of the day. However, it wasn’t long before normal transmission was resumed after a slightly shaky start, with the first goal coming by way of a solid early strike by Lorna Selby who tucked home at the far post after a cross from Nicola “Johnny” Aldridge. Then Nic herself got the second after some silky skills down at the bye line, managing to sell the Waiheke defenders a bottle of milk, a toaster and trip for two to Fiji before casually flicking it over the keeper at her near post. Quality! The third goal came when Shannen “Micky” Finnigan turned a defender inside out in the box then managed to nutmeg a very static keeper. So at halftime it was 3-0 and even though we dominated the second period we were unable to add anymore, but it was not for a lack of trying. Player of the Day went to Maddy “Barney” Miller and

BIRKENHEAD UNITED TE ATATU AFC
3 0
Our second top of the table clash in as many weeks was seen by many as a season defining moment, as to whether or not the girls were good enough or strong enough to beat the teams around them. Te Atau came into the game boasting a defensive record of only conceding 2 goals all season. Birkenhead had other ideas. With a rousing pre match talk around teamwork, rope and playing the Birkenhead way, seemed to have stirred the beast mode inside the girls who came out the traps all guns blazing. The first goal coming Birkenhead’s way by way of Nicola “Johnny” Aldridge who cut in from the wing and drilled a great shot from 25 yards out over the hapless keeper to get the team off to a fantastic start. Caitlin “Styx” Woods was given the thankless task of sticking to their playmaker and not giving her any room to move, and she stuck to her like a magnet, never letting
Birkenhead United AFC | 2020 Lotto NRFL Premiership
her get any time on the ball and constantly harassing her to the point of exasperation. Perfect! Elsewhere, Maddy “Barney” Miller was again on the money with her metronomic passing which kept the team ticking. But it was at the back that the grunt work was happening with the back four of Kat, Hannah, Makayla and George all doing their best Gandalf impersonations of “Thou Shall Not Pass” with Hannah literally throwing herself at everything that moved. Also Makayla, again second week in a row doing the role of man-marking their striker out the game. The second goal came from a cross from the right which managed to miss everyone, and a Te Atatu defensive lapse allowed Lorna Selby to smash the bejesus out of it into the vacant net, to make it 2-0 to the good guys at halftime. The second half as expected, saw Te Atatu come out fighting, and had Birkenhead on the back foot early doors, however the backline was still scrambling as if their lives depended on it, and trust me it did! Chantelle Woodhams-Hilt fresh from celebrating her 16th birthday the night before was on fire and pulled off umpteen point blank saves and smothered any potential chances like a woman possessed. One sequence after a desperate corner mix up saw her pull off three saves in 3 seconds complete with accompanying special

effects!! The third goal came after Shannen “Micky” Finnigan found herself alone in the penalty area, back to goal and was about to turn and shoot when the keeper came out and what can only be described as the world’s worst rugby tackle, or depending on how you look at it, a very aggressive version of the Tango saw the keeper clatter Shannen to the floor, and penalty given. Lorna Selby stepped up and took the kick, only for it to be re-taken after Te Atatu encroached in the area, phew eh Lorna? Anyway, the fact was that this was the game the coaching staff have been waiting to see all season, where the self belief and effort matched the result, a comprehensive team effort by every single player doing their bit it was fantastic to watch!! Player of the Day was harder to pick than a broken nose, but in the end it had to be shared between Hannah “Eddie” Edgar, Makayla “Makka” Williams and Chantelle “Chaney” Woodhams-Hilt for an outstanding defensive effort. Next week sees Birkenhead away to Ellerslie on the turf.they say, there is always next week!! Special thanks to Dean Cook for his stint in the middle with the whistle!!

BIRKENHEAD JUNIORS
10TH GRADE BRAZIL
BIRKENHEAD BUSTERS
On Sunday 9 August 10th grade Brazil competed in a tournament at Fencibles, Pakuranga. The team made a slow start with 2 losses against Fencibles and Forest Hill. The boys improved steadily as the day went on and a close draw with Waitakere put them into the plate.
Such a great day. Man we are proud. Silver medalists! Busters were great. Won their first three pool games convincingly, and drew their fourth, coming top of their pool. They they then went on to win both quarter and semi final. At this point the busters had not conceded a single goal all day.
In the Semi finals they had a win against a Fencibles team and pushed through to the final with a close win against East Coast Bays, 1-0. The boys are to be congratulated on their determination and effort until the end. Thanks to Clarke for the great coaching.
They came up against their rivals from last weekends tournament, mt Albert in the final again. Last week they were completely out-classes by them and lost 4-0.
BIRKENHEAD BARCELONA
Birkenhead Barcelona finished 3rd in a tough group, missing out on Cup Quarterfinals by 1 point. They blitzed their way through the Plate knockout stages lifting the Plate Trophy with a dominant 5-0 victory over Auckland United Black in the final. Overall record of 5 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss.
16
This week they were really geared up to take them on! Busters were up 2-1 at half time, but could t hold out, and ended up losing 5-3 in the most epic final you’ve ever seen! What a tenacious effort by this group. The team gelled so well and all looked after each other all day. Other teams commented on what a happy group of boys they were all day, playing happily between games. Then said they instantly grew up and went into game mode when they set foot on the field at match time. A proud group of parents her. And amazing help from Marcus who stepped up to coach the team for the day.
