Birkenhead United AFC | 2020 Lotto NRFL Premiership
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME ANOTHER WEEKEND, ANOTHER SATURDAY, AND ANOTHER TENSE MATCH FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY! Only our second NRFL fixture at Shepherds this season and already Hobbo’s boys are challenging the National league sides for a share of the top of the table, which is just an outstanding achievement!
The club’s ability to succeed in this purpose can only work if many aspects are aligned and this only occurs because of the countless volunteers giving freely of their time, in support of their community.
The very narrow loss to Central (Auckland City in disguise!) was followed by a win over a second national league team, a very strong Eastern Suburbs side last weekend. Todays challenge is in some ways even more intense as we host the newly formed Auckland United, currently occupying top spot on the table.
Today we have a fantastic example of this, as a player who started at Birko as a 5-year-old makes his 100th appearance for the senior team. Today we celebrate the achievement of Emmanuel Darkwa (new father and all!) and celebrate the achievements of all those unsung people who are a part of all our journeys.
The club continues to grow, and we now have more than 900 junior and youth players playing in Birkenhead colours, as well as 18 senior sides plus the two elite teams competing in the NRFL.
Our thanks go to Harcourts Cooper & Co, John Bull & Kemps Weir, for always being there and for enabling these magnificent outcomes and these fabulous experiences.
It is always an uplifting moment of community pride when you see the Red & White of Birko out and about in the streets, playgrounds, schools, and shops! It reflects our purpose and our key motivation as a community focused club, playing a supportive and enabling role within our community. It is what we are all about.

COACH'S COMMENTS WELCOME TO MIYA AND AUCKLAND UNITED TO SHEPHERDS PARK FOR ROUND FIVE OF THE 2020 LOTTO NRFL SEASON. I think this game is always a benchmark of Competition for places is really tough at the where you’re at as a team and we’ve had moment with spots in the reserve team some fantastic battles over the years and we hard to come by also. are hoping for the same today. Reserves have had four wins from four as Auckland United are sitting top of the well at the moment. Yes, reserves is about table, after starting the season strong with development but there’s nothing wrong four wins from four, beating North Shore with a winning mentality. United, Melville United, Western Springs and Waitakere City in their opening matches. Welcome to the 9th grade Busters today as ball boys. Nicholas, Bronson, Dylan, Rayhan We also come into this match with a good and Ronnie all look after the 9th grade few results to start the season, with only development boys during the week and the one defeat a fortnight ago to Central match days. United, although the boys bounced back last weekend and picked up a good result To our supporters, sponsors and volunteers, against a strong Eastern Suburbs side. welcome back to Shepherds Park for our second home game of the season. Regardless of results, this is a great league and having the better players playing from Your support is greatly appreciated by the start is great for everybody involved in all of the club. Hopefully you’re in for an first team / reserve team football. entertaining, high-quality match this afternoon. Enjoy the game! It has been really pleasing seeing the younger players in the team starting and Paul Hobson playing well, especially Andrew Cromb, Birkenhead United Head Coach Nicholas Milicich and Nathan Lobo.

SATURDAY 4 JULY SHEPHERDS PARK
SATURDAY 11 JULY MADILLS FARM
Our first home of the season, and it was great to see a big crowd turn up in red and white ready to support our boys.
Another good performance this time maybe a touch fortunate to take all the points in what was an evenly-contested match against a strong Eastern Suburbs side.
Unfortunately we went down 1-0 to Central United in a really tight game, which only had two shots on goal throughout the whole game; we hit the crossbar and Central United scored. Disappointed in the result but not the performance, we certainly deserved to come away with a point. MAN OF THE MATCH: Luke Jorgensen
We had some good patches in the first half and dug in and battled in the second. All goals in this game were scored from set pieces, although good to see our boys being clinical when given the chance. GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 3 (Jorgensen, Cromb, McArthur) Eastern Suburbs 2 MAN OF THE MATCH: Andrew Cromb

WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM BIRKENHEAD UNITED NORWEST RESERVES
4 3
Birkenhead who are improving week to week came into the game a bit rusty as having a week off the week before didn’t help our progress. First half Birkenhead went behind on the score sheet twice, the first was a result of some soft and charitable defending, but the girls pulled their socks up and went about levelling the ledger. A great run from Lorna Selby saw her whip in a good cross from the left and Norwest failed to clear their lines and Shannen “Micky” Finnigan unfortunately hit her shot straight at the keeper, but the rebound was tucked home by Amber “Ma” Baker. 1-1 and game on! The second half was evenly matched with play ebbing and flowing, until Norwest got a second goal which came from a 30 yard speculator which caught the Birkenhead keeper Chantelle Woodhams-Hilt a bit flat footed, and she also slipped with the ball squeezing under her dive. Then our own bit of luck improved with Lorna pressing the Norwest defence high up the pitch she managed to get a block in on the keepers attempted clearance and the ball kindly pinged into an empty net. 2-2 Birko dominated and added a further quick two goals in 12 min to make it 4-2, a great goal from Lorna from the left hand edge of the 18yd box which rocketed into the top

right hand corner, and then the goal of the game was a first time hit from Maddy “Barney” Miller from 20 yards out front and centre which nestled in the top bin. A late consolation goal for Norwest again from poor communication and control, led to a rather uncomfortable last 10 mins but overall Birkenhead deserved the win. A special shout out to #BONTHEBALL videography team for providing a great video of the whole game, the girls sat down on Wednesday night and reviewed the whole game and worked out the good bits and the not so good bits, and vowed to fix those errors against Beachlands. Invaluable, if you don’t subscribe to this channel on YouTube, then you should do so immediately!!!
BIRKENHEAD UNITED 4 BEACHLANDS MARETAI 0 A long way to go, in fact I am sure we passed through a different time zone.... along with Google maps sending one car on a wild goose chase around Clevedon...it was a long old trip....but I digress. With two players coming back from minor injuries and Sarah once again lured out to play providing a steadying influence at the back, the girls had a decent challenge ahead against a Beachlands side who had been up and down in their performances. The field was fairly agricultural, but the facilities
Birkenhead United AFC | 2020 Lotto NRFL Premiership
and beachside setting were second to none, and as their coach said post match.. “We may not have the money...but we do have location, location, location” The field had a perfect view of Waiheke Island from the beachside pitch!! The game got under way and Birkenhead were on the money right from the first whistle, with both wingers getting a lot of ball and were able to deliver some great crosses into the middle. It wasn’t long before Nicola “Johnny” Aldridge showed some true grit and chased up a shot which the keeper never quite got control of, and bundled it over the line to make it 1-0 to the girls! Perfect start!!
goal came from a great through ball to Jaiya Bharti who went 1 v 1 with the keeper and calmly tucked it away. The Birkenhead tail was up, and the girls were flying. The 4th and final goal came from a great passing move, and Shannen “Micky” Finnigan, who had just been complaining about not scoring the week before, was suddenly through, 1v 1 with the keeper and showed great composure to calmly slot the ball in the bottom corner.
4-0 was the final result. What was most pleasing was that all the points raised after the midweek video session suddenly all started to click into place and this was by It wasn’t long before 1 became 2, with Lorna far our best showing out of the first three Selby having another storming run, finished games. Others worthy of a mention were off with a great finish from the left hand Maddy “Barney” Miller, Shannen “Micky” side into the bottom opposite corner. Ioana Finnigan, in the middle of the park, Lorna “George” Manoa at left back was having a Selby for again showing great work ethic, barnstorming first half and was often the Caitlin “Ronnie” Woods for a solid 2nd half, starting point for many of the attacks down in fact the whole team should take a bow the left. Half time the 2-0 lead was a great it was great to watch! Finally to the stand start, could have been more, but a solid start out player of the day Ioana “George” Manoa none the less. The second half saw the girls for a solid performance at left back, who turn around and go with the breeze and showed great technique and composure. A the call was to “get our eyes up early”, and proper team performance from everyone!!!!. play the game in the opposition half, but This week the girls are back home Beachlands had other ideas and put up a against Takapuna, so here is hoping for a spirited performance. However the superior continuation of the early good form!! levels of fitness that the team has been building on started to show as Beachlands THIS WEEKEND’S FIXTURE: tired early on and couldn’t match the pace Birkenhead United vs Takapuna AFC Birkenhead was now exhibiting.
