PRESIDENT’S WELCOME WELCOME AGAIN TO SHEPHERDS PARK FOR ROUND 7 OF THIS SEASON’S LOTTO NRFL PREMIER LEAGUE! Today we host Manukau, who are also a side sitting in the top 6 and who are also on the same points (10) as we are, so this should prove another significant test for Hobbo’s young tyros.
time comes, we will be there in the top 6, supported all the way by the Red & White army! The support of you all, from our Firstkicks Birko initiates to the long-in-the-tooth (and somewhat rounder in the belly) O35 stalwarts, is invaluable. COACH'S COMMENTS WELCOME TO KEVIN AND MANUKAU UNITED TO SHEPHERDS PARK FOR ROUND SEVEN OF THE 2020 LOTTO NRFL SEASON. After last weekend’s dissapointing result against Hamilton Wanderers, we feel we need to string together at least 3 wins to make that all important Top 6.
Josh had only just returned from an ACL injury and for this to happen is tragic for him. Josh has undergone a few hours of surgery and is now hopefully on the mend.
Manukau United currently sit equal with us on 10 points, inside the Top 6, so that adds even more meaning to this afternoon’s match. Manukau are always up for the challenge, a tough and aggressive side.
He will be out for the remainder of the season season and from all at Birkenhead United, we wish him a speedy recovery. To our supporters, sponsors and volunteers, welcome back to Shepherds Park for our second home game of the season.
I’m sure this ‘six-pointer’ will be extra motiviation for both teams, who will want all three points this afternoon to push even Your support is greatly appreciated by closer towards solidifying a spot in the Top 6. all of the club. Hopefully you’re in for an entertaining, high-quality match this We let ourselves down in Hamilton, with a afternoon. lack of discipline and some sloppy errors and we got punished according. When Enjoy the game! there’s as much quality in the league as there is, with players like Tommy Semmy Paul Hobson and Derek Tieku ready to pounce, we can’t Birkenhead United Head Coach be making as many errors as we did. It wasn’t a great journey home and made worse when we found out our young player Josh Turner had broken a bone in his neck during the reserves team fixture.

vs AUCKLAND UNITED
vs EASTERN SUBURBS AFC
SATURDAY 18 JULY SHEPHERDS PARK
SATURDAY 25 JULY PORRITT STADIUM
Another entertaining match in front of a good home crowd here at Shepherds Park.
Our most disappointing performance so far. We conceded in the first half after a sloppy mistake, putting us 1-0 down.
Andrew Cromb scored a first half header in a game of few chances. Auckland United grabbed a well deserved goal early in the second half, and we rode our luck. A touch could have nicked it at the end but happy with a point from this match, a fair result for both clubs given how the match played out. GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 1 (Cromb)
5 minutes into the second we levelled up the score through Alex Grieve and at this time were well on top. But a red card to Brock Messenger stopped us in our tracks. We held on till the 90th minute then another error let them in for a last minute winner from Derek Tieku. Disappointing Day. GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 3 (Grieve)

WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM BIRKENHEAD UNITED TAKAPUNA AUT
11 0
Do not adjust your set, that is the actual scoreline.....Well, what can one say, it says it all really....In a clear mismatch of the greatest proportions, the 1st team completely destroyed a hapless Takapuna AUT side, and it was all over red rover by half time with the scoreline 8-0. Ex Takapuna AUT girls Nic Aldridge and Caitlin Woods definitely had a point to prove, as did the ex Takapuna coach who threatened to quit if the girls came up with anything but a win!! There were obviously goals a plenty and as a performance the girls showed some great sequences of play, and the things being worked on from the training ground were beginning to pay dividends. Some stand out performances from Lorna Selby(4 min hattrick!!) Jaiya Bharti(hattrick) and Shannen “Mickey” Finnagan (Player of the Day) for getting on the scoresheet (again!) and Makayla Williams for some tireless defending. This saw the team bounce to the top of the league on goal difference and feeling like the world was our oyster!!
BIRKENHEAD UNITED BUCKLANDS BEACH
2 4
Fast forward to the following week and the girls came crashing back to earth with
8
the realisation that football can be a cruel mistress indeed. The girls welcomed high flying Bucklands Beach to Shepherds Park, who had been going very well on their journey so far. The Birkenhead team were warned before the game that they needed to be on top of their game and not let complacency creep in. Our game plan needed to be executed well - which was to play with passion, purpose and keep possession. Well, that didn’t really go as planned. The first bit did, with Birkenhead taking the lead through a Nicola Aldridge strike from 6 yards out, after a great cross from Lorna Selby finding Nic at the back stick who probably should have headed it home, but instead calmly chested it down before Cynthia Saijaipadoi tucked it home to make it 1-0. Bucklands Beach didn’t let that deter their very clear game plan which was to play a short, sharp, passing game through the thirds which they stuck to and they climbed back into the game. Unfortunately the Birkenhead keeper Chantelle WoodhamsHilt injured her finger during the warm up and it had swollen up a treat, so any shots were going to hurt....regardless. Bucklands equalised shortly after with a well struck goal from outside the penalty area. Before the game the message was “don’t let them shoot, protect our keeper” and we did the complete opposite as by half time
Birkenhead United AFC | 2020 Lotto NRFL Premiership
Bucklands had punished our sloppy play and hit 3 goals all from outside the box before half time! Full credit to Birkenhead, who after receiving a pretty blunt half time talk, came out firing and went close on a number of occasions in the opening 15 minutes, had it not been for the later announced player of the day for Bucklands’ (their keeper) who pulled off save after save to deny the luckless Birkenhead girls a goal it could easily have been 3-3. Defensively we had a much improved 2nd half, with Hannah Edgar and Ioana “George” Moana having solid games along with Amber “Ma” Baker also putting in a solid shift, as did eventual Player of The Day, Lorna Selby who was up and down the park like a fiddlers elbow.
the end of the season as we will be I am sure. The effort from Birkenhead could not be faulted as everyone lifted and worked hard, but unfortunately a lot of that huffing and puffing was due to coughing up possession too often and too cheaply in dangerous positions on the park. But as they say, there is always next week!! Special thanks to Dean Cook for his stint in the middle with the whistle!!
THIS WEEKEND’S FIXTURE: vs Waiheke United AFC Sunday 2nd August, 12pm Kick-Off Onetangi Sports Complex
As predicted Bucklands sat back and absorbed the Birkenhead pressure, and midway through the 2nd half scored a 4th goal after a bit of defensive indecision. But in the best traditions of Winston Churchill, “When you are going through hell, keep going” which the Birkenhead team did, and were rewarded with a late consolation goal from Nic Aldridge to make the final scoreline 4-2. Bucklands executed their game plan, almost flawlessly and full credit to their young team(all U19), and even younger looking coach they will be in the mix come

JOSH TURNER Last weekend in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier Reserves match against Hamilton Wanderers, Josh Turner broke a bone in his neck, requiring surgery and instant treatment. Injuries are never a good sight to see, especially for a promising young player who had only recently recovered from an ACL injury. Josh is an important part of our BUAFC first and reserve team, and his presence will definitely be missed for the remainder of the season. From all involved at Birkenhead United AFC, we would like to wish Josh a speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing you back out on the pitch in red and white in the near future. – BIRKENHEAD UNITED AFC
