PRESIDENT’S WELCOME A WARM WELCOME TO MANUKAU UNITED FOR ROUND 19 OF THE LOTTO NRFL PREMIER LEAGUE. In the round 8 fixture Manukau ran out 1-0 winners on the day, so I’m sure the Shepherds Park faithful will be looking to see that score reversed today. Following a series of good results, including a hard-fought 2-1 win last week against our neighbours down the road, we are now unbeaten in six games. Whilst we’ve developed a bit of breathing space from the bottom two, I know Hobbo and the boys are only looking up, with just three points separating us from the top four. In the Premier Men’s Reserve League, our development squad are currently sat in third place, five points off top, but with a league-best goal difference of +28 they are a really entertaining side to watch if you have the time. Congrats to the Womens Div1 side that one 3-0 against Takapuna last week. The team are now just three points off third place in a very competitive division. The Womens Div2 side remain on course for promotion, just two points of top spot and six points clear of third. But the big news is that the Womens Div3 team are still fighting off West Auckland. Many of the women in this team haven’t played before or haven’t played very much.

4

It can be hard going when the weather, injuries and results are going against and it’s a testament to their determination that they keep on fighting. I hope they’re still having fun and get the win they deserve before the season comes to an end. A reminder that the AGM is coming up on Wednesday 21st August, at which we’ll be celebrating our successes from the last year and explaining our plans for the future. We encourage all members to come along, ask questions and get involved on the night which kicks off from 7pm. After ten fantastic years of management committee involvement, including the last two as President, I will stepping down this year. In August club legend Gareth Williams, who I think joined the committee at the age of five, will also be stepping down as VicePresident. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Gaz all the best as he looks to spend some welldeserved time with his young family. I’m happy to report that a number of really capable and motivated people have expressed their interest to step into committee roles. It’s incredibly important to me that the leadership baton is passed on to people who have the best interests

of all BUAFC members at heart and the skills necessary to take our club forward. I am confident those people have come forward and Gaz and I will be more than happy to support them as they find their feet. The above being said, standing for a Management Committee role is not a closed shop. I would like to encourage any member who is interested in helping out to come forward as we can never have too much support. To stand for the committee simply ask two club members to nominate and second your nomination by writing your name and the role on the sheet on the notice board in the clubroom. Or to register your name, skills and interests as a club volunteer (to support us on a project basis) please go to the link below. https://birkenheadunited.org.nz/volunteer/ All the best to all of the teams playing today. Let’s go Birko! Cheers, Neil Coventry Birkenhead United Club President

COACH’S COMMENTS

WELCOME TO KEVIN AND MANUKAU UNITED TEAM FOR TODAY’S ROUND 19 LOTTO NRFL FIXTURE. We always get a tough game when we’re up bound to be a good bunch of future first against Manukau United and we’re certain teamers and NZ representatives coming that today will be no different. through the age groups. Manukau United currently sit in 9th, two places below us –so will be looking to use today’s match to gain some ground on ourselves and the other clubs in close proximity, Melville United, Eastern Suburbs and Hamilton Wanderers. We’re on a great run at the moment taking 16 points out of a possible 18 – chalking together four consecutive wins ever since our 1-1 draw with Onehunga Sports. The boys are full of confidence heading into today’s match.

I’d like to extend a big thank you to all Birkenhead United staff, supporters and volunteers for everything you do for the club – it’s all much appreciated. Hopefully we can put on another entertaining match for you all this afternoon. Enjoy the match. Cheers, Paul Hobson Birkenhead United Head Coach

I’m really happy with the squad at the moment and as always it is pleasing to see all of the youngsters pushing into the reserves side. The club have plenty of junior tournaments coming up at Shepherds Park, so it would be much apprecaited for those who are available to come down help out and support the next crop of Birko talent. A solid if not spectacular performance against Hamilton Wanderers. We should have had the game done and dusted early on but two late goals sealed the win.

A spicy local derby where we gave back nearly as much as we got.

Our fitness seems to be better than most teams which has been helping us during the later stages of the matches. GOAL SCORERS: Birkenhead United 3 (Baker, Jorgensen, Connor-McLean) Hamilton Wanderers 0 MAN OF THE MATCH: Clarke Foulds

BIRKENHEAD BENFICA

A BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY MORNING SAW BIRKENHEAD BENFICA COMPETE IN THE ALBANY 10TH GRADE TOURNAMENT. After coming off a (disappointing) 2nd place to ECB at the Papamoa tournament a few weeks ago we were hoping to go one better this time. A freakish injury to Monty Galvin meant we were after an extra player. We felt a full time keeper would be the way to go and luckily we found Carter Galletly from the 9th grade to fill in. At first glance it looked like a tough group to be drawn in with games against Bay Olympic, Western Springs, WYNERS Metro and the home team Albany. Our first game against Bay Olympic saw us start a bit slow, but we picked up the pace in the second half and came away with a 2-0 win. The Western Springs team wasn’t the top team we were expecting and a comfortable 5-1 win was the result. Next up was an unknown WYNERS Metro team. We played on a field that had smaller goals and we struggled to find the net. Eventually we were too strong and a 3-0 win got us the points. Albany was up next and comfortable 6-1 win saw us top the group heading into the final stages. We were drawn against Te Atatu Broncos in the quarter final, a big strong outfit that are in our league. A hard fought 3-0 win set up a local rival derby with Glenfield. The boys were now hitting their stride and playing some lovely football which resulted in a 4-0 win. ECB were playing Hibiscus Coast in the other semi final so would it be replay of the Papamoa tournament? The boys were hoping not while the coach was hoping it was but with a different result. Hibiscus Coast managed to beat ECB for the first time this year (I think) and make the final. From the outset we with most of the game played in front of the Hibiscus Coast goal. They defended well for the the first quarter

but once the dead lock was broken the goals started flowing. 6-0 was the final score seeing us take the trophy. The boys played really well all day and it’s hard to single out any one player. But would like the thank Kayden and Noah for playing in defence for the whole day. And also Carter for being our keeper for the day. It’s a tough gig going up a grade into a unknown team.

Back: Carter Galletly, Kevin Tian, Noah Clarke, Dyllan Welsh, Harry Merrit, Rocky DeWinter Front: Nikolai Sterjov, Finley Crossan, Elliot Drake, Kayden Godbold 15
