We will be releasing this version of The Bucks Student weekly every Wednesday - but we can’t make this newsletter without you. (A huge thanks to those that have contributed to this initial issue as we venture into the unknown!) So we want to invite you to contribute anything you fancy - and we will work with you to get it published in the next edition of The Bucks Student lite. We really do mean anything, within reason of course, as hopefully this can help to take your mind off current events, give you something to do, and to use this time to reflect and move forward. To submit content or discuss ideas, drop an email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com. If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Sabb update

Christina Demetriou VPSI

Tao Warburton President

Brooke Pilbeam VPEW

Hey everyone, hope you’re all keeping safe! We’re officially in our second week of working from home and I must say it feels a bit weird writing my update from my couch. Working from home is definitely not the same, especially without your smiley faces popping by the office to say hello (or have a quick nap on the beanbags), but it is definitely an experience!

Hi everyone, hope you are coping well with assignments and the online lectures. If you don’t think you are getting what you would get from normal lectures let us know. We are here to voice your concerns to the university!

Well what a strange time this is. Hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe! I can’t lie, I have found the adjustment a bit odd!

Keeping students involved digitally has definitely been a challenge, but it has been super exciting to come together and start to think out of the box. Most of all, it has been so heart-warming to see clubs and societies coming together more than ever through some fun challenges! Activities and challenges aside, please know that we are here for you all, just drop us a message!

In the meantime just a quick update from me about what I have been doing whilst I have been working from home. I have been working with the university to try to get information to you about what is happening. During my less serious hours at work, I have been challenged on our Instagram to do various yoga poses along with Pres Learns to, which is still happening so don’t forget to vote for what you want me to do! I love to cook and play music along with some reading so if you are struggling with what to do in your down time, or are sick of Netflix parties, don’t forget your mum, dad or sibling might love it if you helped them out in the kitchen. I hope you have a good few weeks and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the online newspaper which has many recommendations in it and our weekly schedule of activities coming out soon.

We have been very busy since starting to work from home. Alongside the representation team I have been working hard to ensure any of your educational questions or issues are getting sorted by liaising with the University, It’s challenging - but a new learning curve for us all. When I ran for VPEW I never expected this to be what I would be doing for the second half of my term in office! All three of us have been working with many different teams in the Students’ Union to plan some exciting things for you guys to do along with us whilst this craziness is all happening. Don’t forget we are still your Students Union and we represent YOU! Keep safe everyone.

Netflix recommendations

The Netflix Queen A self confessed ‘queen’ of Netflix, Jude Warner shares her top recommendations of what you should be watching;

Atypical - a coming of age story that follows Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny yet emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? I really love this film due to the awareness on what its like on day to day for someone being on the spectrum and their family. Sex Education - Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course living with mom Jean, a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates’ problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may well need some therapy of his own...

All the Bright Places – the saddest movie ever. Prepare to cry for 10 hours straight. The story follows two teens; Violet Markey and Theodore Finch, who meet and change each other’s lives forever. As they struggle with the emotional and physical scars of their past, they come together, discovering that even the smallest places and moments can mean something. Queer eye - More than a decade after the original series went off the air, Netflix reboots the “Queer Eye” franchise with a new Fab Five and a new setting, trading in the concrete jungle of New York City for communities in and around Atlanta. The style experts forge relationships with men and women who often have different beliefs from them, leading to moments of social commentary interspersed with style advice. Advising people in need of lifestyle makeovers are food and wine specialist Antoni Porowski, interior designer Bobby Berk, grooming consultant Jonathan Van Ness, fashion designer Tan France and culture expert Karamo Brown.

Managing money

Managing money

You may be experiencing financial difficulty already at this point or anticipating financial hardship during the foreseeable future. There are some actions that you can take to alleviate your problems or reduce the severity of them. Existing debts such as credit cards and commercial loans. Speak with your lenders to see what help that they can offer to you. This might be a payment holiday on some amounts or a pause in payment for a period. The key is to check your lenders website and speak to them about how you can manage your money. Mortgages and Rent: If you are struggling, speak to your lender or landlord at the earliest opportunity. For students with Mortgages you may be advised

to switch to an interest only mortgage for a period to cut down on your outgoings. Banks and mortgage providers are reacting to the current situation and depending on who your lender is you may be able to get some relief from your mortgage expenses. For students who rent it is always best to have an open dialogue with your landlord/ agency/council about what deferments of payments they can allow. The situation for private tenants is likely to develop with suggestions of additional measures being put in place to support renters during the period when the Coronavirus is likely to be having an effect on tenants. If you are facing eviction or you are struggling to manage your finances and you need

additional advice or guidance please contact the Students’ Union Advice Centre. Additional support can be sought from the housing charity Shelter england. shelter.org.uk/get_help Looking for additional funding: The University has a Hardship Fund that students can apply to if you are in financial hardship. Not all applications to the fund will be successful. To apply for the Bucks Hardship Fund please contact the Students’ Union Advice Centre by emailing suadvice@Bucks.ac.uk. If you could ensure that you send your name, contact phone number, ID number, and a time and date you would prefer to have the appointment at. Following the interview a form will be sent to you via email that you can complete on your computer. You

Bubble & Squeak

Ingredients

If it bubbles and squeaks, there’s a strong chance it’s bubble and squeak you’re making!

Cold mashed potato

At the moment shopping can be difficult, so here’s a simple recipe to use up leftovers, particularly mashed potato and cooked vegetables.

Cold cooked vegetables cut into small pieces It doesn’t really matter what veg you use but broccoli and cabbage are probably the best!

Anything else you fancy or have spare Spring onions, cooked meat, small squares of hard cheese.

• Mix together the potato, vegetables and other ingredients in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper to your taste. • Form the created mixture into cakes, around the size and shape of a burger - or however you fancy them. • Sprinkle the flour onto a plate and coat each cake all over. • Pour the oil into a frying pan and begin to heat. • Once the oil has warmed up and is sizzling, fry the cakes until golden brown on each side, turning regularly.

Salt and pepper

• If you like, you can add a fried or poached egg on the top, or get creative with toppings and add whatever else you may have leftover from other meals.

2 spoons plain flour

• Enjoy!

Give to Refresh

Bucks New University and Bucks Students’ Union tackle hygiene poverty. On the Thursday 20 February, Give to Refresh was launched! This is a joint project with the University to address and tackle hygiene poverty. Since the launch of Give to Refresh we have received 886 donations. We are so thankful to all students, staff and the community who have donated. Not heard of give to refresh? Read on to find out exactly what this project is and how you can help from your own home! Give to Refresh is working with the organisation Beauty Bank since 2017, they have been helping women and men living in poverty. They provide personal care and hygiene products to registered charities including; food banks, homeless centres, refuges, and secondary schools. The Give to Refresh initiative is powered by our belief that being clean is a basic human right, not a luxury or privilege.

We have drop off points for any donations at gateway reception, both Students’ Union campuses and Aylesbury. Although currently you cannot drop off your donations, there is something you can do while at home: start collecting your items! If you are finding yourselves spring cleaning to keep busy, why not keep your eyes out for any unused and unwanted products?

donations while spring cleaning be sure to let the Union know on our social media but using the hashtag #BucskGivestoRefresh and #Bucksathome! Your donations will make a huge difference to organisations that need it so get involved if you can! Please feel free to contact jade.collis@bucks.ac.uk for further information on Give to Refresh.

Things that could be included: • Body moistures • Face wash • Body wash • Shampoo and Conditioner • Unused/unopened mascara. Anything that you come across while cleaning, why not keep and donate to Give to Refresh rather than throwing it away and letting everything end up in landfill unnecessarily. If you find any

Fun Fact: we are the first Union/University in London and the south (and only the second in England) to set up a Beauty Bank public donation point so local people can get involved too! So spread the word using the hashtags above to see how many more donations we can collect during this time.

Remote volunteering

The Bucks Student lite edition 1

By Jade Collis

Remote volunteering Still have that itch to help out or to do something meaningful with your spare time? Jade Collis has you covered, and will be covering volunteering opportunities you can do from home in every edition. Volunteering can sometimes be difficult as it usually requires time that you may not think you have, or it requires travel, but what if volunteering can be done from the comfort of your own home? Well guess what, it can! Volunteering is a great thing to get involved with for many reasons. Are you finding yourself with some more spare time? Bored of watching Netflix or making TikToks already? Why not volunteer! Use your time to help your local community and give back to others - it will give you a great sense of achievement for the day. And don’t forget it will bring you one step closer to that next volunteering milestone award! There are a lot of vulnerable people who are self-isolating at the moment. If you’re healthy, symptom-free and not isolating, you can offer to help out neighbours, family and friends. That could be by running errands, offering to walk there dog or cut their grass or even more simple - offer them your time. Talk to them over the phone, or ask if they have facetime to give them

some human interaction. Use the card below, or write your own, to offer your help to your local neighbours. (We don’t recommend adding your full address if you are posting the card to people that you don’t know very well) FCancer: FCancer is a website that asks people to donate their skills to cancer charities. There are lots of different skills that are needed, for example they are looking for graphic designers to

design a poster for an event or a videographer or film editor to edit video clips that was taken at an event. If you have a skill visit their website to see how you can help others! Telephone counselling: Charities such as ChildLine and Samaritans depend on volunteer counsellors to reach out to those in need, so why not consider picking up the phone and getting involved on a one-to-one basis?
