The Philippines has a long history of life and death combat. From ancient times to the modern day, the fighting arts of the Filipino archipelago have proven themselves time and again to be efficient, effective and extremely deadly forms of fighting. There are countless systems of Filipino martial arts spread throughout the thousands of islands in this region. Many are family arts and no “outsider will likely ever learn them. Fortunately, many have also been made available to the rest of the world. From the Kyusho perspective the study begins with learning revival and restorations, but then develops mobile arm targeting as its Martial foundation. When you dissect an attack, besides a kicking action, all other attacks start with the arms, but the challenge is that the arms are the fastest moving parts of the body with the greatest range of motion and directional attack capability. So it is a very challenging section of training that should be integrated into every session, in so many variations. There are other ways to make this level a bit easier and one is in the skill of Arm Trapping. Kali Master Raffi Derderian and Kyusho Practitioner Evan Pantazi - a collaborative film

hidoshi Jordan publishes every day his deepest thoughts on his Facebook page and he has the courtesy of sending them to me. They are always the result of profound reflections on the most varied issues and, following the ancient epistolary custom of the classics, and in spite of the fact that we meet continuously, I send him, by way of a comment, my views inspired by his profound questionings. Some of them will form a part of these editorials, because even out of context, they result pertinent in certain way; they are, so to speak, almost a species of modern Haiku. My pen, more and more lazy, is shortened in explanations, because he who can understand, understands with little, and he who does not want to understand will not understand, however much I extend my explanations; so it is thanks to your stimulus, my dear Shidoshi, that these texts will see the light. For those who want to read Shidoshi Jordan's original texts, remember that they appear published free every day on his Facebook's page..

To what extent can we control the nature of people or things? The river can be channeled, yes, and with great effort! but sooner or later the water will get into the sea. Any artifice generates risks, because when the water contained in a reservoir is suddenly released, it generates a destructive wave ‌ (or electricity in a turbine!). Nature nonetheless, always prevails and all we can is defer it, modulate it. Any attempt of absolute control, sooner or later generates an absolute lack of control. "You cannot stem the tide", reads the saying, and so, the great forces of life, evolution and fate, always sneak through each and every gate we can establish. Sobriety is neither an antidote, nor an impregnable bastion, but it's an equalizer of disasters. Likewise, reflection will not prevent us from swallowing each and every bitter pill, but it will allow us to learn from them and maybe, if only at times, will let us break the destructive cycle of the snake biting its own tail, of the broken record repeating again and again the same mistake ... But evolution is also passing peacefully to the following one, without fear, and yes, with illusion, because however much illusion is a deception, it's "our deception", and therefore the indispensable instrument with which our nature endowed us to move forward; the carrot is so necessary as the stick for the donkey to walk. Consciousness Consciousness is the privilege of the spirit and therefore no one can silence it forever, because we cannot escape from ourselves.

The elevation that it promotes is eternal, because it's in its nature to partake of the evolving push, and because of that, it must not be forced, but only remove the barriers that surround it and contain it, let it come. Raised the ramparts, as the water, it will flood everything in our day to day, and though there might be background clatter, its silence will impregnate us, with the same naturalness with which water wets everything it touches. But even soaked in it, we can walk naked as the king of the story with his invisible dress. How many times the child that we have inside is the one who shouts: "the king is naked!" The brainy intellectuals do not reach the depth of that cry, the mind does not reach where the spirit reaches, only the child's innocence opens those sacred doors. How much mystery and power enclosed in them! Where is the limit of responsability with oneself and with others? The Master has no choice but to intervene. When? Every system; every nature; every context, whether anthropological, historical or social, create its premises. If we take freedom as a great premise, everything will be reduced to a reflex action of our natures (that of the Master, of the student, in their contexts) any excuse is justified or justifiable, because everything is, if looked at from the appropriate angle or framework. From the Unamuno's "Let others invent!", to the responsibility of a father, all is perfectly understandable, all is acceptable in the doing of a Master... everything! but, will it be really positive for both? Life itself puts us every day in front of our limitations. To what extent must be pushed the river that flows alone? Everything is a matter of degree. There are teachers who decide to do, others to make do, and still others who take advantage of the appropriate circumstances so that events occur, that evolution acts, that the major destiny of each student can find its place. Everyone here, as usual, will act according to his or her nature, the mixture of both will pay off, with its mistakes and agreements. What would be considered wrong? From a certain point of view there are some points to think about: what instead of opening prospects, closes them; what instead of modeling, amputates; what instead of pruning ends in cut; what only removes the excess and forgets about supplying what is missing; what treats with excessive rigor what should be treated with compassion and what, on the contrary, (beyond the Master's nature or convenience) treats with disdain the unforgivable, and that, like most things, is a Variable border. We return to the natures, we return to the particular, we return to the context. You cannot tame a thoroughbred like a Percheron, or a Percheron like a thoroughbred. Is the taming you learnt the right one for that horse?

“Consciousness is the privilege of the spirit and therefore no one can silence it forever, because we cannot escape from ourselves.

"Each bull has his own fight", but, is it necessary to fight every bull what comes out from the bullpens door? Sometimes not to do is much more than to do. And sometimes you'll just ask yourself: But ... What the heck! Above all particular, larger values act, greater forces are imposed, we are all a tiny part of other titanic ones, we can only find the way in the narrow hallway of our destinies, one millimeter to the left ... two to the right ... assume our own destiny with delight. If playing cards and losing is a pleasure, what will it be to win? ‌ - Well, my friend... That's talking to God! -

Great Masters A samurai in Provence Meeting with a celebrity in the world of Martial Arts, Master Hiroo Mochizuki, founder of Yoseikan Budo, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year.

Text: Maxime Bonnet & Elsa Hellemans Photos: Alfredo Tucci

Great Masters Hiroo Mochizuki, descendant from a lineage of samurais and founder of the Yoseikan Budo, will shortly celebrate his eighty birthdays. In his modest dojo Salon de Provence, he is training with one of his sons, under the intrigued look of his grandson. His small size has not prevented him from becoming a great Master. His robust body and safe body gestures give him a vigorous aspect. Nothing in his face or of his body let you guess his age except for maybe his abundant white hair. Smiling, the sensei of naughty look always receives his visitors with a great simplicity. He seeks his words and uses a colorful language to tell us with charm and humor the years of practice that led him to found the Yoseikan Budo in 1975. At his age, "he trains twice a week, gives three courses of one hour and half and conducts seminars almost every weekend", explains to us Stephanie Mochizuki, head of the Yo s e i k a n Budo National Commission. Violaine, the Fitness teacher, is stunned by the Master's state of health: "Normally - she says - we have a lot of sequels when we have trained so much, this is not human, there has got to be a secret!"

Great Masters “It was somewhat by chance that Hiroo Mochizuki discovered the cowboy whip movement, the fundamental wave-like motion of the Yoseikan Budo. It's a stroke of luck because the old masters of China and Japan did not have this opportunity.

An innovative master It was somewhat by chance that Hiroo Mochizuki discovered "the cowboy whip movement", the fundamental wave-like motion of the Yoseikan Budo. "It's a stroke of luck because the old masters of China and Japan did not have this opportunity." More than a simple combination of Martial Arts, the Master has always wanted to develop a "body language", a complete discipline that uses waviness as a conducting wire. Through the development of this system, he aspires to "pursuit a practice which is respectful with the body, taking into account the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics", contrary to the "traditionalists systems that are harmful to health. We must absolutely change this way of thinking to stop getting hurt and hurting others. The human being is made to progress, mankind must learn the agreement and live it together. But there is still much work to do." Sabrina, a lady practitioner of 35 years of age, states that "It is an art accessible to everyone, combining the physical aspect of Karate with the flexibility of Aikido".

“I have no secret” He owes his great physical shape to "a chance in life". He simply recommends "not to do too much, but it's not we who decide, it is nature. It's my wife who is careful, not me!” Everyone describes the founder as an affordable person, showing great modesty and a profound humanism. "People are continuously expecting to hear the stories of the Master that always carry a moral tinged with humor" - Stephanie says -. "He prefers the cozy clubs where everyone can have a drink and enjoy together after the class." This is confirmed by Jean-Pierre, professor of Yoseikan in Ventabren: "He is very approachable, always willing to train and share his time. Meanwhile, Sabrina for her part considers herself a follower of the sensei, with whom she had the opportunity of practicing for a year: "He taught me how to control myself and my emotions, but especially that everything is possible when the means are given." So, Hiroo Mochizuki is primarily a simple and generous man, worthy of the title of Yoseikan Budo Soke [Guardian of the Yoseikan Budo], that was transmitted to him by his father. "Respect is the foundation of society of the future" - concludes the Master -. "Without it there will be no peace."

Great Masters Yoseikan Budo, “a research laboratory Hiroo Mochizuki has been practicing Martial Arts since childhood with his father, Minoru Mochizuki, grandson of the last descendant of a Samurai lineage. Minoru was a direct student of many great masters who founded important fighting arts, like Kano Jigoro (Judo), Ueshiba Morihei (Aikido) and Funakoshi Gichin (Shotokan Karate [rigid style]). In the 60s, his son Hiroo left Japan under his request and settled in France, where he taught Aikido and Wado Ryu Karate [flexible style]. During this time he contributed significantly to the spreading of this Martial Art in Europe, since he participated in the creation of the French Federation of Karate in 1964. It was then that he discovered French Boxing, a new influence that he incorporated in his practice of Yoseikan Budo. "My father has always spoken about Yoseikan as a research laboratory," confesses his eldest son. This fusion of different disciplines in one and the flexibility of its techniques makes a rich and modern Martial Art, allowing each practitioner evolve among projections, immobilizations on the ground, joint extensions, weapons etc., always respecting his body and that of his training partner.

Did you know? The birthplace of the first Yoseikan Budo dojo was in Shizuoka, Japan, one and a half hours from Tokyo, in the city of origin of the Mochizuki

family. The first Yoseikan dojo was founded in the early twentieth century on the initiative of Minoru Mochizuki. He wanted to share techniques from different disciplines and decided to regroup all these teachings in one same place, his home. Fifth Japan's largest city, Shizuoka is famous for the magnificent panorama offered by Mount Fuji, sacred volcano of Shinto and Buddhist mythology, where legendary masters and samurai trained on its flanks for centuries. Nowadays, practitioners from around the world keep coming to train in this environment, propitious for the meditation and the physical exercise.

A difficult recognition The Yoseikan has one hundred and fifty clubs in France and despite being present in all five continents it has difficulty in being recognized beyond its borders. "Many clubs are not affiliated with the Yoseikan World Federation and that's why few countries are represented during the

Report championships" - says Stephanie -. "To have more weight and recognition at an international level it's necessary that the world federation enters the SportAccord (CIO). For this, the federation must have at least thirty countries affiliated, and this is difficult, particularly in Africa, because of the many things that are continuously happening" - explains the head of the National Commission of Yoseikan Budo So, right now, participating in the Olympics is simply impossible. "In the Olympics is even more complicated to have inter national recognition, since decisions are subject to political whims". Mitchi, the master's eldest son, doesn't care: "I am in no hurry that our Yoseikan tur ns into a sports system to compete in the Olympics, I prefer that it remains being a Martial Art, thus providing more humanity."

An assured continuity The two sons of Master Mochizuki have also chosen to make the Yoseikan Budo their passion and their profession. For Kyoshi, the youngest of the family, this heritage is "a great fortune, a treasure, a family wealth, but is also a responsibility because we must go on developing the discipline. It's one of the principles we have inherited

from our grandfather. He always questioned the teachings he received in order to improve them". For Mitchi ("the one who opens the way"), it is time to end the ancient traditions. "Our father always taught us to share our knowledge. We will be only guarantors of a philosophical line, but the succession of Yoseikan shall be made through a group of international experts. ÂŤA man alone does not possess the whole truth, we all have our virtues and our weaknesses and only sharing the richness of every one we will be able to enrich the whole world." A loyal vision of that of their father and which they wish to universalize in the 44 countries affiliated with the Yoseikan World Federation.

What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.

Kyusho International

Real Kyusho For Starters So many people are using Kyusho; either integrating it into their current systems or using it as a separate system. We have been publicly instructing it now for over 30 years and still there are still many latecomers, either just hearing about Kyusho or who are now feeling left out. But it is still not too late! Why many waited or resisted lear ning Kyusho? Ther e ar e many r easons, but the most popular are that the individual does not believe in it, the individual‘s instructor does not believe in it. ell after so many years of proof on the mat, in medical and scientific validation, that argument is now dead… or should I say KO’ed! And really what is not to believe, you hit a nerve and it causes pain and physical dysfunction… so you need to ask; can anyone really not believe it anymore? But we still have some “Traditionalists” that believe if their teacher did not show them or they do not know it, it is not real. But now more than ever people are finally waking up to see that if they do not know Kyusho they are missing a vital aspect of their studies, no matter what style.

“Over the years as people did awaken to Kyusho’s potential, many questions came in from around the world as to what would be the best way to start.”

Kyusho International

Over the years as people did awaken to Kyusho’s potential, many questions came in from around the world as to what would be the best way to start. The answer is to get to an actual course, to experience it firsthand. But many people cannot break that barrier for personal reasons, so the next best thing we suggest to start them in their journey and make it more comfortable is an educational video. But the presentation of Kyusho must be on their personal level for it to help them fully relate it to their current situation. So we work more for their level of martial skill or knowledge (or lack of skill for beginners without martial training), suggesting specific direction.

For the experienced Martial Artist: If I know they have some experience in martial arts, the best suggestion is the "Top Ten" (Points of Kyusho) video... this has good methods as well as select easily accessible targets that are versatile enough for various situations and needs. It also helps them with idea to in turn help demonstrate and possibly instruct others in for greater effect and efficiency. This has become Budo Internationals best-selling Kyusho video, due to the versatility and simplicity involved. The trailer alone has over 1.3 million views so far‌ this demonstrates a large curiosity for this concise method of Kyusho education. And that is exactly what Kyusho is, efficiency in a concise package.

Evan Pantazi

Kyusho International

Evan Pantazi From there the Martial Arts practitioner can then adapt these to their personal style and gain even more worth and greater depth in that style. That will hopefully break the barrier and get them to seek hands on training or at least lead them to anther course of study presented in video format‌ and hopefully not rushed. Taking the time to fully understand, learn and adapt to the presented targets and uses, they can further that line of training or develop another (Striking, Grappling, Joint Manipulations, etc.). And as a side note, those instructors that in turn brought the Kyusho to their organized groups gained favor and higher regard as they worked to help that group and the people inside.

“If I know they have some experience in martial arts, the best suggestion is the "Top Ten" (Points of Kyusho) video... this has good methods as well as select easily accessible targets that are versatile enough for various situations and needs

Kyusho International

Evan Pantazi For the Beginning Martial Artist or to those with no Martial Training: The suggestion is for the KSP (Kyusho Self Protection), and although it is primarily billed as Women’s Self Protection, it is an easy and powerful method that we use for all new trainees. This is mostly in line with the "Top Ten" mentioned earlier as it has few strategic targets, but with a more defined and simple method of delivery. Now this information is not only for Women, it is also optimal for teens,

children and especially for professional men that need a short course of study (not a lifetime endeavor of Martial ART). And it has for them the added bonus of not using fisted hands or kick (The shod foot in many countries is considered a weapon and carries legal ramifications). As example a Doctor has worked all his life to build a good income and therefore becomes a great target. They do not have the time for Martial Studies, but need selfprotection. But the problem is if they use a fist or foot, they may be held legally liable for any damages by the court system.

So the film is dedicated to open hand formation (that will not be viewed by onlookers as aggressive, it will be viewed more as protective) , vital targets that will work best with the openhand and correct applications, first in tutorial format but also in a more stressful street scenario. Now it was stated when the film released, but the Women used in the filming was a professional model that had never worked (or knew of) Kyusho before. She did not even want to strike the attackers as she never struck people prior to that film. And as we begin the film training you can

“Top ten video: The trailer alone has over 1.3 million views so far… this demonstrates a large curiosity for this concise method of Kyusho education.”

Kyusho International

Evan Pantazi see her beginner actions…but she did drop all of the Ukes in that film well and repetitively throughout the day… even in street clothes in parking lot scenarios. She accomplished several KO’s via nerve targets that were real affects and not staged for the film (we do not fake or affects, Kyusho is about realistic delivery and affect).

For All: Now the Kyusho Knockout is what lures everyone to the knowledge and is precisely why Kyusho got popular. But it is not all there is to Kyusho, nor should it be as it is precisely that practice which will cause those that still make it the main thrust of their study loose students, friends or fellow training partners. As a matter of fact, anyone can KO another (Kyusho does

make it far easier), they can break a limb, gouge the eyes, etc., however only a master can incapacitate the actions of another without damage (again Kyusho’s forte). Kyusho is easy, what is more challenging is reaching an individual at their personal level, wants and needs... that is the pinnacle of learning and educating others, as when you can reach this with each person on their level, you will have given them what they need; no more, no less. We are ready to tailor a program specifically for you as well, just contact us at www.

As we have documented over the past 6 years, Kyusho translates as "Vital Point" and is a study of the human condition and it's frailties. Although similar in appearance to the ancient acupuncture and pressure point massage methods, the Kyusho method can also deal with immediacy for certain trauma as well as easily rid the body of common ailments. Within seconds we canm begin to relax and ease the pain associated with headaches, backaches, muscle and internal cramps, hiccups, asthma, nausea, sinus congestion and so many more common maladies both of natural causes as well as trauma inflicted. This is all performed quickly and efficiently without expensive pills or drugs that can take 20 minutes or more to work or have serious side effects on other organs or body functions. The ramifications are enormous and we believe to be of such worth for continued research and societal benefit. This type of holistic approach has been effective for many thousands of years in cultures throughout the world and we have added even more possibility and purpose to it for you. Once you learn these simple methods of Kyusho First Aide, you too can help your family and friends with many of these common ailments we each suffer through. Let this serve as an historical record of how these methods developed and the other health possibilities they hold for day-to-day living. However it is not the full curriculum, as one would expect, the depth and intricacies can only be conveyed with hands on application and practice under the watchful eye of an instructor. The consistent practice of these methods will not only increase your abilities to relieve the practiced formulas, but also instruct you in the intuitive application of many other health issues. They should not be considered standalone formulas, but rather ways to correct certain problems within the human body based on the foundation presented.

1) Why Movements are no forms "You discover what if you leave out what is not.“ Again and again one is faced with discussions on the meaning of forms. For the WTU I have chosen the name Movement for tools for practice (solo and with partner / s) for two reasons. The first reason is my homage to one of the men who did the groundwork on which we build: G. I. Gurdjieff. He also referred to his "dances" to specially composed piano music as „Movements".

WT Universe

The second reason is that which is already in the WTU basic motto "we move people". Movement - nothing is static. Life is movement. The force that is enlivened us the force that kills us, because man is always rigid and stiff, trying to set up a barrier to life. But it breaks on him. As the waves of water it strikes the protective armor over again and interrupts him. Movement is life - Stagnation is death. In our solo and partner Movements we describe situations. There are no positions and there are no processes. Assuming zoom with the wrong attitude to them - what can be immediately seen from the outside - then you can save the practice. Then one is to wrap the best way again in an artificial, ankonditionierte, alien form without any value.

WT Universe 2 2) Human states - "The bungee effect of human consciousness“ If one pays attention to the development / development of human consciousness, is a "defense mechanism" particularly evident. Despite all the "heroic" efforts this prevents any change. People want change, they dream of movement, freedom, whatever they mean by. Most them comes this desire, if they have their everyday state with which they have so far fully identified tired because it does not provide any new stimuli more.

For this reason, we must point out two basic drives for change again: 1) The search for a new source of attention. It is sufficient then that "garments" are exchanged and then go through the people the same pattern in a new form again and hold for change and what they are experiencing it for experience. 2) The Feel of inner necessity to change something fundamental, the inner pressure for fulfillment and development beyond the satisfaction of attention and by "soul growth". People are starting to want to change something in which activity, that may always show. You begin figuratively loszurennen from the starting point. They seem to move, to remove. But one thing they have not taken into account, they are still connected to their initial state. I call it a rubber rope. This provides at the beginning as resistance. The faster and further away from the starting point, the tighter it is, and begins to build return. At some point, the man running against this rubber rope. It's just a matter of time until his strength, his enthusiasm subside and it is pulled back to its original initial state. Reicher to the "experience" of a failed escape.

WT Universe 3 Movement Article 7, 19th of February 2012 AJN/RFB "We can be given almost everything, everything but freedom!" John G. Bennett Our understanding of "movement" is the following: . 1) A community of people, the movement of the WTU. . 2) A physical, emotional or mental process. . 3) A sort of exercise in the WTU: • Motional-Movements • Solo- und Partner-Movements • Fight • Drill • Health • Guild • „Movements“ for the „Center of thought“ • „Movements“ for the „Center of emotion“ Furthermore the term is known for G. I. Gurdjieff's MovementExercises and Dances. Gurdjieff also called his "school" an "Institute for the Harmonous Development of Man". Following that, we see the WTU as a Movement, committed to harmonic development in humans. Wing Tsun, as we know it, can only be used in connection with that,

as a tool to achieve it. This was also one of the reasons, for which we kept up the old term "Wing Tsun", as it means "beautiful spring" or "ode to spring". A notation also bearing the symbolism of resurrection, revival, a renewed sprouting after the winter, a new phase, an adapted form. So what is the harmonic development of humans after all? When talking about or explaining some- thing we usually do so by creating images, trying to converge with the matter itself from different angles. One time from this direction one time from that. Thus we get various points of view, and shape a coherent overall picture, visible from as many different perspectives as possible. By "Movement" we do not mean just a gathering of people, conditioning themselves and each other to having the same inventory the same limited toolkit, and by that perceiving each other as being similar, sympathetic, and so forth. A Movement really is a collective. It is a community of people dedicating themselves to the unfolding of their skills, potentials, using the time and place's appropriate tools.

Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a very brutal and devastating Art. The Arts concept its to dominate and take over battleground and space, fast dominating space and engulfing opponents to prevent them from being able to use their weapons or body. Once space is acquired, the base and angle are taken to control opponents rotation or projection, rooting or uprooting is produced from the smallest expression of touch or angle and base position, this we call “Lengket” or sticky. Keeping very close to opponents when striking or using a weapon and putting opponents on “Slywa” or weightless stage of spinal and muscle misalignment. Once rooting takes place, the strike makes massive contact in the body that has no muscle or skeletal protection. “Sambuts” are finishes meaning something very hard to walk away from especially when compression of neck or spine, so finishing means its a done deal. The opposite of that is a “Buang” that stands for throws less devastating in the beginner levels but taught to learn mechanics that in later phases of development of the student or practioner can be modified to “Sambuts” for devastating throws. Compressing skeletal structure, weapons and body structures or striking, grapping defense and offence are all played and studied in our platforms. In this video there's a beginner “Pantjar” platform, also the “Jurus”, which are the playbooks of the system of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, are played here. This platform teaches where to be in position to attacker, the platform is 3 dimensional and teaches where opponents body's alignments are the weakest to point of contact the platform. It also teaches how to deal with multiple opponents and space needed, base angle and levers are all play here. Hope you enjoy my small offering into a vast large Art. “Hormat Terima Kasi”.

Kung Fu

From Teacher to Student At a time when the internet, phones and the like didn’t exist yet, I would imagine, the student-teacher relationship must have been much more common than today. The reason is obvious: One acquired knowledge most o f a l l b y m e a n s o f o t h e r, m o r e experienced people. One often paid a lot of respect to the experienced person and/or one followed the teacher and mentor, even on travels through the country for decades in order to be taught. Modern technology provides us with many new ways to learn from someone and to spread knowledge. However, despite these numerous possibilities there are areas, in which one only makes progress, just like in the past, by means of the direct relationship between the teacher and the student. It is mostly about movement-related disciplines such as for example dancing. Or of course also the traditional martial arts such as the original Hung Gar Kung Fu of my school. It is in the nature of things that especially older people or people with entirely different interests are better at something than oneself.

Kung Fu

“The student pays respect, honours his teacher and his school, helps him where he or she can and supports him. In return, the teacher has a responsible position, in which he is responsible for the success or failure of his students.

“The ability to accept this and to submit oneself to someone is a prerequisite to learn from a traditional teacher or more befittingly here: from a master.”

he ability to accept this and to submit oneself to someone is a prerequisite to lear n from a traditional teacher or more befittingly here: from a master. This is probably an important part of my recipe of success with my teacher, the Kung Fu legend, Dr. Chiu Chi Ling. In our latitudes, the words “mentor” or “master” have a negative connotation, as, like I said, it is no longer common in many areas. And yet they are indispensable, as mentioned in the introduction, for the learning and the passing on of traditional Kung Fu. Such a relationship is by no means a one-way street. The student pays respect, honours his teacher and his school, helps him where he or she can and supports him. In return, the teacher has a responsible position, in which he is responsible for the success or failure of his students. Upon entering the school and at the start of the first lesson this connection, albeit not particularly strong yet, is already there. This step is known as “first Bai-Si”, which means “to ask the teacher for it”. In my school this is the handing over of the white belt after the passed test. After many years of instruction and loyal following a second Bai-Si can be taken. Here we are mostly talking about 10 to 15 years after the first lesson. At this festive ceremony the bond between student and teacher is confirmed and strengthened respectively. Hereby the student vows to have definitely decided for the master and to pledge loyalty and support to him. The teacher, in turn, publicly makes a commitment to his student and promises him or her to impart deeper knowledge into the martial arts to him or her. These were the so-called “in door” or “back door” students who used to be mostly taught right at the teacher’s house. Becoming such a student or even style

T

Kung Fu successor like me of course requires more than mere training and sweating. Again and again I observe how students, not only my own, give everything they possibly can and perform excellently in order to gain deeper knowledge into a martial art and to build up a strong Kung Fu family of own’s one. Yet, the art lies in doing so, not only a few weeks, months or years, but all the time. Similar to other types of relationships we know, such as for example marriage or good friendship, this kind of connection lives off love and energy, which are exchanged over a long time. The most suitable comparison would be the one of a family, such as for example between a father and a son. This is an enormously strong bond that can withstand a lot. Especially from the perspective of the student, it is not always pleasant to learn something from his master. Just as it is not pleasant for the son to be rebuked by his father. However, this is precisely how not only the character of the student is shaped but also how his or her devotion and loyalty is tested, again and again. And especially for me personally this is a very important point. Of course one is allowed to be interested in other martial arts or to take a look at what this or that school does differently. However, at the second Bai-Si, at the latest, the decision should be taken and the loyalty should be irrevocable. I like to handle it like my own teacher: “Loyalty before all else”. For my part, you may be slow, weak or inflexible. These are all things one can work on and improve together. As long as the loyalty is there.

“Yet, the art lies in doing so, not only a few weeks, months or years, but all the time.”

“Becoming such a student or even style successor like me of course requires more than mere training and sweating.

Kung Fu However, one must not misunderstand me, as I said: I very much welcome an interest in other styles, schools and the comparison with them. I also promote and encourage my students to think for themselves on a daily basis. The basis of this relationship, however, is and will always be loyalty towards one’s teacher and his school. Usually, obligations also imply rights for the person concerned. And of course, this is also the case here. I mentioned the example of father and son, the example of a family. Does a loving father grow tired of helping his son when he is confronted with a difficult task? Certainly not. A good traditional teacher (Chinese “Sifu”) is always going to see his students as some sort of children. And likewise, in return for his or her loyalty, the student may of course always count on the support of his or her Kung Fu family and on the advice of his or her master. Who of us has ever been in a hectic phase in life or needed a few hands more in order to master a challenging situation? For the student, loyalty towards his or her master and his or her school involves a family that never grows tired of supporting and helping him or her. Of course this relationship changes in the course of the education, like for example at the completion of the basic school (black belt). From that point onwards, one ranks among “adults” in the Kung Fu community, and at that point at the latest, one also starts taking responsibility “downwards” for his or her younger Kung Fu brothers and sisters. Or when a student is appointed to “Sifu” (master, teacher), which symbolically corresponds to founding a family of one’s own. But the core of the matter always remains the same: One is part of a big, strong family, which is there for you and helps to follow the way with discipline, respect, control, courage and attention, in order to become a better, more virtuous human being.

“I very much welcome an interest in other styles, schools and the comparison with them. I also promote and encourage my students to think for themselves on a daily basis.

Silat

Grand Masters My name is Maha Guru Horacio Rodriguez. I am the lineage holder of Pendekar Pak Victor De Thouars in Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak. I was given the lineage from Pendekar Pak Vic about 7 years ago when he retired. My martial arts background began when I started learning Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak with Penderkar Victor De Thouars. At that time he would teach me in the old traditional ways which was very hard and demanding. The drilling of each individual structure until I fully understood it and it became a part of me. Pak Vic was a very strict and disciplined teacher in those days and demanded full time training and dedication, because the training was very hard and punishing.

Grand Masters

I

remember even the difference in the level changes within each of the jurus and lankas had its challenges, keys of understanding. Serak is so vast with an extensive curriculum especially with weapons. Pak Vic is very particular in how a weapon is used in both offensive and defensive manner and the structures and principles that create a signature for our line of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak. Pukulan pentjak Silat Serak is both an empty hand and weapon base system. We have many edge weapons, swords, knifes, circular karambits, sticks, different length staffs, and other more obscure weapons. The main thing I want to cover in this article is the particular way in how we train and use our weaponry. Even the empty hand training deals with the opponent attacking with weapons in both hands and multiple opponents. This training makes you more aware of everything that takes place in an altercation and do’s and don’ts when facing weapon attacks with single or multiple attackers. The weapons jurus and hand jurus have a lot to teach in its principal applications, even including different grips for different weapons. The lankas are what makes the weapons come alive. Particular

lankas will teach different ways of dealing with different circumstances. The jurus are basically the alphabet of the system. These letters are in a sense used to create the words in the sentences of a combative conversation. The sambuts are applications and used to produce and train different scenarios and drills to learn, feel, or rasiah. The sambuts or sambutans counter for counter to train with partners to start building flow and smoothness for action and reaction to attacks. In Serak even the defense of the system is always attacking. So when defending with the upper body the lower body is attacking. And when defending with the lower body the upper body is attacking so something is always attacking regardless of an offensive or defensive structure. Part of the body is always attacking the space making way for the entries or to finish. The contact is made at 30, 45 and 90 degrees for both offensive and defense and uses the concept of the base, angle, and lever. The base, angle,

Grand Masters and lever is one of Pukulan Pencak Silat Seraks’ signatures for manipulating the opponent’s space, balance, and structure utilizing efficiency with little to no power. There are many important elements in Serak. For instance sensitivity of the body and contact with the opponent is a must. So we will move into a very close range to engulf and control the space. Longar are long angles used to track the returning blade of any kind of cut so the body can occupy the space. This is also utilized in long range entries. The buangs or throws are used to manipulate the opponent’s weight and skeleton structure moving your way in through the opponents’ body to displace their mass getting it out of the way to get to the next opponent. This can also be utilized with the concept of shielding or bridging using one opponent to block and hide behind or seamlessly transfer from one opponent to the next as they get into each other’s way. The sambuts are more for finishing the opponent through throws, locks, and breaks. There are jurus or upper body structures are both done for empty hand and weapons. For empty hand there are 18 jurus that teach both offensive and defensive structures along with 18 war jurus. These Jurus also correspond to the weapon jurus for knife, staff, and sticks. All the jurus connect so the blade jurus will also teach concepts for the empty hand and stick jurus. Each juru supports the other jurus, so the hand jurus support the weapon jurus and the weapon jurus support the hand jurus. So once you learn the full curriculum all the pieces come together to complete the puzzle and bring them alive as one. Tarik is constantly drilled from the jurus to use

Silat the rotation of the hip to pull or push away and creates maximum torque form whichever sambut or weapon structure used. Each individual weapon has a particular flavor and manner in how it is used, for example: the clurit or cycle weapon there's a principal call Tarik or to pull using Lanka Tiga that makes this weapon very special to us. This creates maximum torque to pull or cut while doing a sambut or finish with the knife or Pissau edge. These angles are used to provide an offensive base to finish. Sembilan are the 9 cutting angles of the weapon. The striking angles and various weapon grips are related to the Jurusan motion of each juru weather standard forward grip or reverse grip. The blade is also turned at an angel to make disarming and stripping very difficult. The blade up angle is more of a coil angle used to produce hard to block fast cuts and disarms. It is very hard to strip a man holding the blade in this manner. There are also concepts for attacking the opponents’ returning blade or the shifting of angles. Disarming the opponent usually takes place after the cuts have been done and we are on our way out to the next opponent. Once entry is acquired the blade never stops cutting and creating angles of entry. The buntuk also known as punio or back end of the weapon is produced for close range fighting. This is often used for close range hitting, short strikes, grappling, stripping, and choking. With the karambits knives, the ring is also the butu and is used to turn the blade angle. The platforms are another very important part of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak. The first platform structure is Latihan pelosok Tiga which introduces and teaches all the basics of heel to toe walking the line. From

Grand Masters there several pentjar platform structures are introduced. Teaching proper movement, body positioning, the use of body angles to not take on the opponents mass or load, how to keep balance, sliwa or concepts of taking opponents balance and not compromising yours, jurus, sweeps, and weapons. The lower base is used to dissolve incoming power and mass and to stop rotational power from the opponent. The foot rotation is used to cut the line of incoming mass and helps in producing the forward pressure, occupying the space, and leaves you in a position of power and balance called masukans. Forward and reverse masukans is constantly used to shift and change while moving in the platform to bring in the opponent as a shield, make cuts, uprooting the opponent and for jurus, buangs, and sambuts. Other platform structures like lanka lima is used a lot for hand structures. This is an attacking platform and

used to dominate any angle coming in. So there are many drills for timing, transition of movement and angle of acceptance for the strike and dissolve the energy coming in. This automatically produces the space and angle for the weapon to make its entry and finish. Lanka tiga is used more of an evasive platform to come into an opponent from an outside line or inside line from an angle so you don’t meet their mass head-on. Pelosoks or corner pantjar training drills that deal with longer weapons, swords, staff, and spears. Sekurum is taught to have an anchor foot to produce a base so you can travel and not have a weak structure or sliwa. Also some of the lower body attacking structures introduces the iron foot. This is the lead foot or back

Grand Masters used for striking and will stick to the body and their structure. This is used to create a throw of their body as the blade cuts through or off balance the opponent to move into cuts without compromising your weapon. The garisans teach the adhesion and contact needed to manipulate opponents body mass for smoother transition and timing this together with the proper Lanka footwork, is priceless for the weaponry. Kilat is principal represented in the lightning in our emblem, this also carries over into the weaponry as it applies in many ways sometimes use in strikes or thrust cuts sometimes to disturbed opponent from tracking your movement and much more. We have series of training drill

platforms for both empty hand and weapons. The two man training sets to teach dexterity, flow, space control, and how to dominate the space once it has been taken over and using the weapon sambuts. We also teach two man sets that are constantly challenge and adapt to incoming angle space, weapons, timing, and transition of the movements between both trainer and trainee. These are all tools used to start teaching and building the rasiah or feel needed for any attack or defense as well as develop the natural muscle memory into reaction and application must flow as one. We teach both weapons and empty hands at the same time throughout the 10 phases.

Silat The higher the phase the more advance the training, understanding of the application, and use of the empty hands and weapons. The empty hands and weapons videos that Budo International produced of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak covers many of the principles discussed above covering the foundation level of understanding of my line and Belajar or Studies. Future videos are projected of more advance curriculum and application of the art. With that I would like to thank Master Evan Patanzi for all his help in bringing these videos and articles to you. I hope you enjoy them. Hormat to all.

THE VISIO A NEW U

UNION ITALIAN TRADITIONAL KUNG FU

MISSION

Practicing traditional Kung Fu means immersing yourself in an ancient culture and therefore setting off on a trip through the study of philosophy, medicine, art and martial spirit. The fields of study and research are endless, as are the manifestations of the practice. To date, the UIKT brings together a number of schools and teachers who practice and teach different styles. The beauty of this union lies in sharing the multiple forms to live the martial experience, and everyone benefits from the exchange and dialogue among the different traditions and methods. In the past, the great Masters met to grow together, train and show the results of their own investigations: virtuous circle of exchange and mutual support that allowed the Masters who joined this collaboration to excel in the practice and dissemination of traditional Kung Fu. The UIKT is rebuilding this spirit of harmony and cooperation to launch a new era of traditional Kung Fu. For it, it is necessary TO JOIN forces to allow that the real martial culture can go out of a scene increasingly decadent that has created an upset image of Kung Fu's nature.

Self Defense S.I.D.P. (Scuola Italiana Difesa Personale) - Italian School of Self Defense: ideals, principles and purposes in its own interpretation of traditional Martial Arts The S . I . D . P. is an association of people who got together to pursue a common goal: that of spreading a conception of the mar tial spirit as the new of a new culture, the center of which is Man, in the sense that he is able of thinking critically and acting with resolution, that is, he masters himself; in the sense that he is endowed with martial ability, that is, he is a fighter; in the sense that he is r eady to support his teammates and help them become stronger, that is, he is a friend in the highest sense. We are, and we want to be more and more, an alternative to the social dynamics, usual in our culture, in which the other one is always a tool for a goal: instead we make tools of ourselves tools to help each other to walk toward our goal.

Self Defense

ur conception of the martial spirit might not be original. However, in a world in which Martial Arts are often associated with entertainment, and are reduced to the practice in a training hall, to folklore, and in any case considered a superfluous, unnecessary and outdated knowledge, even within the field of actual combat that should be their domain, such a view is undoubtedly very little shared. But we do not believe that it is impracticable or unfruitful. Our conception of the martial spirit is the necessary condition for a new humanism, which allows people to face immediate threats, and thus survive; a humanism that helps them recognize and challenge the standards and

In our culture, idealism is considered to be a beautiful and slightly conclusive tension: full of charm, but destined to break against the hard rocks of material needs and the law of the strongest. We recognize this as a cultural contingency: we know that things not always were like that, and we work hard to change ours surroundings. We are idealistic that do not want to stagnate in the quagmire of the material needs: we work to be

successful and to gain prestige, accepting the challenge of society to conquer it by following its rules. We are idealistic people and we do not resign ourselves to being squashed by the strongest: we work to be stronger; we do not want to be not preys or predators, but to neutralize predators, provoking in those who are ready to abuse another person, the doubt that their prey maybe is not as disarmed as they think. But the principal goal of our work is that of having enough strength to help: ourselves, our companion, our loved ones, our neighbor‌ as many as we can! The angular stone of our philosophical thought can be compared, if not circumscribe, to a certain reading of the principle of the Tao, and this unifying idea illuminates

Self Defense all the aspects of our practice: ethics, didactics, strategy, tactics and technique. The Tao is for us a symbol of the dialectical nature of the existence, in which are generated and fight the opposite poles; in which the Chaos and the Cosmos are not facts, but interpretations; in which freedom and need do not exist by themselves, but they smooth one into the other, interlaced by paradoxical links. In all the aspects of our practice we take note of the "need"; of the presence of preexisting forces and structures; of the fact that many of these forces are incomparably much bigger than us, curls and whirlpools of the current of history in which we minuscule swim; and of the fact many of the structures condition us up to the point of defining the scope of our possibilities, deeply rooted if not intrinsic characters of our culture, in the anthropologic sense, and of our Homo Sapiens's bodies: we know that we are not omnipotent. In every aspect of our practice we work for enhancing our spaces of "possibility", we favor the tides of history to make us transport wherever we want, we investigate our existences between nature and culture with the lens of fighting, theater where everybody let fall his masks and appears in a nudity that we hardly experience elsewhere, with the purpose of defining ourselves and help one another to taking form to image and likeness of what we feel of we have to be: we know that we are strength and that, to some extent, we have power which we constantly increase with our work. In this historical and cultural moment, in this economic and social contingency, we manifest us as self-defense teachers or security operators, but this thin patina of urbanity doesn't delimit nor describe us but in the way we momentarily choose to appear, animated by the wish of being ourselves by being useful, harmonic and suitable to a hostile and competitive environment, but not passive or permissive with respect to its dehumanizing and mercantilised laws. We are not warriors: our war is to live humanely in an inhumane environment, standard bearers of an ancient wisdom, forgotten by many, but not outdated and avantgarde of a strong and gentle idea. We are not special people, there are no special people, there are only "unique" people, and an identity part of our uniqueness is to have bet our lives on this enterprise, still young, but already the bearer of great satisfaction on all planes. Our Scuola continues to grow thanks to the courage and commitment of unique people who have chosen to bet. Upon us, and like us.

Report “We are not warriors: our war is to live humanely in an inhumane environment, standard bearers of an ancient wisdom, forgotten by many, but not outdated and avant-garde of a strong and gentle idea.

Weng Chun meets Choy Lee Fut For over thirty years I have traveled to Hong Kong and China to learn and research Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, and in particular Weng Chun Kung Fu, not least in order to share this art with my (master-) students as thoroughly and comprehensively as possible. In this endeavor, I have been greatly inspired by my Weng Chun- Grandmaster Wai Yan, who launched this research project after World War Two with his research academy and Weng Chun school Dai Duk Lun, and has finally passed it on to me. In this article I would like to give an account of my research trip to Hong Kong in July 2015, during which I have not only studied Pao Fa Lien- Wing Chun but also took a closer look at Choy Lee Fut-Kung Fu. Weng Chun- Grandmaster Chu Chung Man, a close friend of my teacher Wai Yan for over three decades, has introduced the Fa Kuen- forms into the Weng Text: Andreas Hoffmann, Christoph FuĂ&#x;, Photos: Andreas Hoffmann, Budo International, Tsang Hin Kuen

Kung Fu

Chun system. These forms have the same names as the Choy Lee Fut- forms, as well as a similar structure regarding their execution. However, Grandmaster Chu Chung Man never mentioned their origin from Choy Lee Fut, but instead referred to a distinct lineage from the Weng Chun- hall of the Shaolin temple to himself.

hile researching a new style of Kung Fu, it is always important to me to actually learn it in order to obtain better in-depth understanding of its particularities. After some inquiry, I chose the experienced Choy Lee Fut- Master Tsang Hin Kuen in Shatin, Hong Kong, to start my investigation. Master Tsang Hin Kuen stems from a famous Choy Lee Fut- family; his father Tsang Chiu Wu had written a book about the principal form Sap Ying Kuen and its applications, and his family and he himself participated in many contests and Sanda competitions. Still today, Tsang Hin Kuen annually hosts a Sanda tournament together with the Hong Kong Fighting Union. Also, the way he used force within his movements very much corresponded to my own notion of Kung Fu.

W

His large Choy Lee Fut- school is integrated into a major business complex in Shatin. Training takes places barefooted on mats, which is kind of uncommon for Hong Kong, but indicates a certain focus on combat training. Master Tsang Hin Kuen welcomed me very warmly, and promptly began to teach me the 15 basic exercises of Choy Lee Fut. These are great drills for the development of flexibility, coordination and power, based on the basic steps, punches and kicks of Choy Lee Fut. They are

always performed as warm-up at the beginning of training sessions, and with these drills I also learned the basic principles of Choy Lee Fut: 1.) Yin and Yang: According to Master Tsang Hin Kuen, this is a concept of relativeness. For instance, if Yang refers to the sky, then the ground is what Yin means. If Yang denotes fire, then Yin corresponds with water etc. In Choy Lee Fut, there are two forms of “inserting punches:

Kung Fu Left page: GM Wu Tsang Chiu won the first East Asian Martial Arts Tournament. In this page: 1969. Inauguration of the Choy Lee Fut School of the Tsang family. Grandmaster Tsang Chiu Wu at the opening of the Kung Fu school, in 1969.

Kung Fu The Yin-punch and the Yang-punch. These two complement each other and can become a serial attacking and defending action. These famous chain punches of Choy Lee Fut are also known as “serial inserting punches”. The founder of Pak Sing Choy Lee Fut was also known as “The unbeatable Tam Saam”, because he won all of his over hundred contest fights, not least by virtue of this particular form of the Choy Lee Fut- chain punches. 2.) Rigorous and soft: In Choy Lee Fut, both qualities are sought to be realized. For example, the basic punches appear to be rigorous from outside, such as the Qua Choy (Hanging punch), Sou Choy (Sweeping punch), Pao Choy (Throwing punch), Bing Choy (Lash punch) etc. However, according to the principle of softness in Choy Lee Fut, the arm is to be used like a sling, where the palm or fist represents the stone, the arm the string, while the waist is

holding the string. By correct use of the waist and footwork, the practitioner creates the soft internal power. 3.) Emptiness and Concreteness: As an example, you can distract an opponent by combining a concrete punch with an empty punch. Our drills included many combinations in the form of “left empty, right concrete”, or “low empty, high concrete” etc. Most of the basic exercises were already familiar to me from Weng Chun. But the particular use of the shoulder to strive towards maximizing reach was a new concept to me and gave me fresh impulses. I also came to appreciate that distinctive feature of Choy Lee Fut, the leopard fist. In Choy Lee Fut, fighting over long distance plays an important role, and in this respect I have learned many useful combat strategies from Master Tsang Hin Kuen. The next thing I have learned was one of the unarmed main forms. I quickly came to realize that that the Weng Chun Fa Kuen apparently stems from the same source; in Choy Lee Fut, there are some identical form patterns taught as in the Fa Kuen, which certainly is no coincidence. By dealing

Kung Fu

with the Choy Lee Fut system, I have gained a more thorough understanding of many movement patterns within the Fa Kuen, and I can appreciate the attempt of Grandmaster Chu Chung Man to integrate the Fa Kuen into the Weng Chun system. To do so, he had to partially change the body work, and it was necessary to shift the applications more towards the usual Chi Sao-distance, which also meant a greater emphasize on the elbows as a source of power. This, unfortunately, also had the effect that his form of the Fa Kuen has lost quite a bit of its original “momentum”, which we try to reestablish in our Weng Chun association. We seek to leave the development of elbow power mostly to the other Weng Chun forms, whereas one chief aspect of the Fa Kuen really is for the practitioner to shape up that particular “swinging power” or momentum, and to learn how to use his arm like a sling. When I came to learn the Choy Lee Fut long pole, Bagua Kwan, I was astonished once again about the striking similarities between the long pole method of Choy Lee

Kung Fu

Fut and that of Weng Chun-, but also of Wing Chun- and Hung Gar- Kung Fu. Similar body work, partially identical segments within the forms, as well as the same combat principles such as Fan, Got etc., clearly suggest that all southern Shaolin-styles originate from the same source, and merely took different routes of development during the last two centuries. Chan Heung, the founder of Choy Lee Fut, had first learned Hung Gar from his uncle Chan Yuen Woon, then Lee Gar, before becoming the student of the monk Choy Fook. To pay respect to all of his teachers, he called his style ChoyLee-Fat, where “Fat (Buddha) points to the origin of Shaolin. As we know from the biographies of the great Kung Fu- masters, they firmly stuck to their path, constantly seeking to improve themselves and develop their martial art to a still higher level. I myself also stick to this path since I met Grandmaster Wai Yan for the first time three decades ago and was allowed to learn from him. If you want to be part of our Kung Fu movement as well, do not hesitate to contact us, and we will support you in your endeavor to raise your martial art to a higher level.

The KMRED Group in full swing The Seminars of the KMRED Group are multiplying in France and abroad. The last seminar, led by Christian Wilmouth in the Saint Malo club

(France), reached full participation thanks to the perfect organization of StĂŠphane Delanoe (KMRED regional representative).

As you all know, KMRED is a self-defense concept that has its origin in the 'spirit' in which Krav Maga was developed, although it has its own technical and educational identity.

The KMRED concept has two main axes of development: civil and professional.

The KMRED is also a 'GROUP' of specialists incorporating several disciplines and who work around an idea, a common vision, the idea of R.E.D, that is, Research, Evolution and Development. Besides the Krav Maga RED, which is intended primarily for civilian public, there is

also the KMRED Pro Training, developed solely for the professional environment. Through one of the pioneers of the Philippine Martial Arts in France, our group has integrated the Arnis Kali Eskrima. In fact, Didier Trinocque, Founder of the Arnis "Pagbabago" is responsible for the development of this Martial Art within the KMRED.

True to our motto 'Student one day, Student always', we keep working every day in the evolution of our concept and the complementary disciplines. The KMRED is becoming international...

After having started to develop in Brazil and Denmark, now it is doing in Italy, Spain and in a country in the Gulf where the concept will be taught

through the diffusion of our articles and DVD's carried out by for our partner, Budo International.

We are pleased to present the second work of the KMRED group. This video bearing the name "Concept and Education" aims to make you discover a part of the concept Krav Maga Research, Evolution and Development, as well as the pedagogy developed within our group. The different exercises that you will discover here are not intended to "feast your eyes" or demonstrate our combative attitudes, because our priority here is that of explaining how we prepare our students so that they become "warriors", capable of "adapting" to the different evolutions of street fighting.

"What beautifies the desert is that it hides a well of water somewhere." Antoine de Saint-Exupery "What we know is a water drop; what we ignore is the ocean. Isaac Newton Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, for it doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling to the circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence and extreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the form without transforming the essence. Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren; and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, turned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or the force of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges! Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimate and animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, according to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that we accompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as some would have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the JudeoChristian guilt of environmentalism. Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us. Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight, wreck... Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfect analogy of humility, adaptation and not conflict. The water wins aimlessly; following its nature, it surrounds any obstacle and teaches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sight of the goal. What is a rock on the road, a mountain‌? Even trapped in between cliffs and narrow passages, water filters, or evaporates if such a thing is not possible; nothing stops its destination. It's been the river of life that has left in my shores these texts, which today I share in book format. And I say "it left" because all authorship is at least confusing, since we are all debtors of those before us, those who inspired and keep inspiring us, of the floating clouds of the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of the spirits and the consciousness around us. I can't teach anything because I don't know anything, but for those who wish to hear my poems, here I leave my sincere and truly felt thoughts, every time more felt and less thought, because mind is a deceptive device that sees what it wants to see and I’ve learned to be suspicious about it.

Comprehensive or Integral Vovinam is simply going back to the Founder's true Vovinam. The goal of the founder was clearly and openly declared: "Harvesting effective techniques, assimilate their essence and transform them into Vovinam techniques", and indeed this concept still remains in force and is mandatory for all Vovinam Masters in the world. Vovinam is then a research concept to achieve a super effective style. However, today 90% of Vovinam teachers forget it and bend to a program too loaded, too fixed, too aesthetic and sometimes completely ineffective in numerous techniques. Comprehensive Vovinam is simply rediscovering the original essence of Master Nguyen Loc's art. For that, we have the principles, the basic techniques, and we just have to go back to work out the effective way of every technique and apply the founding principle. In this DVD, by the hand of Master Patrick Levet, we will study the basis of Integral Vovinam, threats and knife attacks, integral counterattacks, and defense against Dam Thang (direct fist) Dam Moc (hook punch), Dam Lao (javelin punch) as well as basic leg levers.
