uring these days of confinement, I've heard more than once and from the lips of different people, all kinds of attempts to explain in a transcendental way the events we are experiencing around the pandemic and its effects. It is normal that man, when his world collapses, seeks with more or less success a way to explain his situation. After the initial shock, we all scrutinize responses to overcome the shock that breaks our daily lives and questions our construction of the world. It's normal that when man feels his world collapse around him, he tends to seek, with greater or lesser success, a way of explaining his situation. There have been many who, working things their own advantage, attribute to the planet a human intentionality, and claim that it has produced the virus to punish us for our wrong behavior. Any other vision, such as that of the new religion of late environmentalism, is, to say the least, a half-truth. The Universe follows defined guidelines, and that's what makes it susceptible to be studied and understood, although quite often, the

further away we take the camera (or the closer we bring it! See the documentary "Powers of ten"!) we can reach visions of its behavior much closer to the paradox than to the Newtonian linearity of cause and effect. Not understanding something does not authorize us to twist it, that's not lucidity but selfdeception. In any case this "stop the world" that has taken place on a global level, has had and is having some well-defined group and personal effects. The frontal strike to arrogance manifests itself in both cases and levels, as one of the most repeated points. We had long felt virtually invulnerable, and our culture was skewed by choosing to ignore death and disease, almost like events that could only happen to others. And all of a sudden, it turned out that we were all on the menu! And they put us at home and constrained us to look at ourselves, whether we liked it or not, under a situation of stress and confusion. Science had no answers, the powers-that-be had no strategies, hospitals were saturated ... stammering, terrified, locked up and fighting an invisible "enemy", we found ourselves like a thoroughbred cloistered in a stable in the interior of which they had thrown a hive of furious bees. It’s normal in such circumstances that all psychological pathologies have jumped into the pool, including paranoia, of course, seeking international conspiracies or dark intentions of a shadow world government. It’s funny how we tend to beat around the bush, only because we don’t accept a simple fact that’s really relevant: we are much more fragile than we would like to accept and much more arrogant than we can ever admit. It seems that we prefer to be in the hands of such evil men, known enemies after all, instead of being in the hands and

under laws that we have decided to ignore and that transcend us. Of the two kinds of ignorance, that of those who don't know because they haven't studied, and that of those who don't know because they don't want to know, the latter is patently the worst. Every squeeze in our lives, whatever hits our center of gravity with enough force to destabilize us, can knock us down or, on the contrary, awaken us from the sleepy inertia of a blind existence in linear parameters, shaking and dusting off our consciences, from the hidden idea that we have made of Infinity. Now comes step two, exiting the stable ... Our first gesture will be that of holding us back to the known, and it will do so with fruition! We will see an awakening of the primary instincts, as we have never seen in recent decades, simply stay tuned! The most evolved ones, however, will take advantage of this opportunity to take a leap in their perception, opening their eyes to new realities. In the Shizen tradition, Bioki, the lord of disease, is haunted by lust, so be prepared to see a cutout on the skirts. But Bioki is also the lord of the spirits and the spiritual world; not a few, from this "stopping the world", will seek beyond the material ways to address their concern. Kyusho Vitality... 5 Pressure Points for Self Defense and Health When most people hear the wor d Kyusho, or the wor ds Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind...Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they ar e cor r ect. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can â&#x20AC;&#x153;assistâ&#x20AC;? the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This article will focus on how we can use the same points for both healing and self defense. This is wher e knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play.

Kyusho Video Anatomy One does not have to have an advanced degree of any kind to be knowledgeable about anatomy. There is so much information available, literally at our fingertip, that most basic anatomical questions can be researched within seconds through our smartphones and tablets. Some of the Pressure Points sit directly on top of nerve clusters, some are on arteries and veins where they are close to the surface, and some are located on the tendons and ligaments. A light strike to a point called Stomach 5 on the midline of the jaw, for example, can cause everything from slight dizziness to a full knockout. When one has a good understanding how the nerve is situated in the jawline, where it surfaces, and the path that it travels, there is a good chance that this is a good tool for your martial arts arsenal. It is through years of trial and error that we have been able to grasp the nuances of how to strike this particular point in a self defense situation. The beautiful thing is that once one has a grasp of one way to manipulate a point such as this, there are often other ways to manipulate it as well. Stomach 5 can be struck back towards the ear in a twisting motion with your right hand to the left side of the face, This point can also be struck with the back of the right hand (knuckles), to the right side of the opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face in a downward cutting/twisting motion. This is the amazing part of Kyusho that is often overlooked. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use the analogy of a hammer and a nail. The nail is the Pressure Point, the hammer is the striking element (weapon) used. The nail can be positioned in a variety of ways depending on what you are trying to accomplish. If the nail is not hit properly, then it can start to bend and lose its effectiveness, and making it potentially useless and or dangerous to the person wielding the hammer. In a self defense situation, using pressure points without good, sound technique to begin with can be potentially dangerous to the person attempting the technique. This is were a good understanding of anatomy comes in...one at a time. I personally suggest when learning a point, focus on the many ways it can be manipulated and/or used in a self defense situation. When you can identify the local anatomy, possible ways to use this point, you will find that the point is like the nail... you just

have to know how to wield the hammer in that particular situation. The healing side is different and will be addressed later on in this article.

Basic Principles of Motion Predictability The more we train techniques with opponents of different size and builds, the more we come to understand the predictable responses we get when using Pressure Points in the proper way. For example...if you push (the safe way to practice using this point) into Large Intestine 20 (at the corner of the nose) in a diagonal direction towards the back of the opposite ear, the opponent will quickly close his eyes, his chin will duck down (which puts pressure on the cervical spine), he will rise up on his toes quickly, his arms will rise up and back (Yang Response - see Kyusho Pyramid DVD), and may have difficulty opening his eyes for a few seconds due to the searing pain and disorientation. All of these responses happen at the same time. We have found that these predictable responses occur in 9 out of 10 cases. Nothing is 100% except death and taxes! An orchestra conductor uses his baton to direct each section of the orchestra when to play and how much emphasis to play with. We are the orchestra conductor playing the Pressure Points on our opponent. We train to obtain that predictable response 100% of the time, knowing that we may have to make adjustments as the situation unfolds. We may have to manipulate the points being used in a different manner. This can be because of size differences, strength of our opponent, susceptibility to certain points (no one is 100% immune from Pressure Points unless of course if they are dead), and so on. While each situation is unique, they all follow certain basic principles of movement.

Developing a Sensitive Touch A Massage Therapist, Acupuncturist and Chiropractor all have to go through 100â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of hours of hands on practice to develop a feel for different body types. Martial artists are no different. Whether we are grappling or striking we need to understand how much pressure is needed to stop an attacker.

Kyusho Video An Acupuncturist presses into the skin to locate the point and to feel the elasticity of the skin. This will help them to know how much pressure is needed to insert the needle effectively. A Chiropractor will feel where the spine is out of balance and adjust according to musculature (the muscles tend to tighten up when out of balance), size of the patient, etc. Some adjustments may require a heavier hand than others. It all depends on their training and experience. A Massage Therapist will usually ask how much pressure you prefer during a massage. The more experience they have, the more effective their touch, regardless of the pressure. Some areas actually require less pressure than others and this is a direct result of training and experience. In order for the healing side to be even more effective, the patient must relax and accept the treatment. This is easier said than done, especially if the patient in question does not like strangers touching them. Lastly, a martial artist should understand that when we use Pressure Points properly, the opponent will tense up, thus making the point more effective for self defense purposes. Grappling arts, when trained properly, train your mind and body as to how much pressure is required for a given situation. The sensitive touch on a moving target (self defense situation) is much different than a healing situation (patient is mostly sitting quietly, allowing you to do your thing). A doctor/therapist generally does not expect the patient to try and take his head off when being examined. The

Kyusho Video doctor/therapist is more relaxed and the focus is different than in a self defense situation. A martial artist, on the other hand, has to move out of the line of attack, “diagnose” the situation, and stop the attacker and/or just get away from the situation, while all hell is breaking loose. Developing a sense of touch is different for health practitioners and martial artists, and can also compliment each other. In my opinion, elements of both should be trained in order to become more well rounded as a health practitioner and/or martial artist.

Conclusion Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

Shaolin Si Shao (四梢) The Four Limbs In previous articles we delved into the different essential theories of the Shaolin style, such as: Six harmonies (three external and three internal), San Jie or three sections (body upper and middle sections and root section), Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. All these essential theories make up the core of the Shaolin style as in how our body should move, from the inside out and from the outside in, as well as from the union of the muscle chains to the union of the extremities or joints, not to mention the union of breathing and movement.

Shaolin n this article we will deepen the Si Shao theory, that is, the four limbs or four points theory. These four limbs are body areas that we have to force with "intention" to activate with Qi (energy) a specific anatomical body element. The action of uniting and activating all these elements (hair, nails, teeth and tongue), together with the Qi, will help us generate more internal energy. This activation method is based on simulating a powerful state of physical anger equal to that of a cornered animal that seeks to defend itself against an even more dangerous opponent.

Chi Shao is one of those theories that, to my mind, and just like the rest of them, are not only useful in the Shaolin style, but also in every style of Chinese Martial Arts, since it provides us with a great knowledge on how we must operate our bodily machine in case of extreme need. It is said that when the essence and life force of the Shaolin Kung Fu practitioner shows itself in all its splendor, the hair on his head can be seen standing on end; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s then that his nails can deeply pierce the opponent's bones, his teeth can break a metal wire, and his tongue can wriggle in his mouth with such power that it could dislodge his teeth

Shaolin out of his gums. At such a moment, his life energy arises from the elixir field in his body (dantian), and his limbs are so activated that they serve as the emanation channels of his force. The term “Si Shao Qi Si Shao” refers to the action of simultaneously bringing the energy to the four points or extremes that are: • Hair, as a blood termination point. • Nails, as a tendon termination point (both hands and feet). • Teeth, as a bone termination point. • Tongue, as a muscle termination point. Arguably, Si Shao looks like a self-induced rage where hair stands up, blood throbs, fingers and toes bend like claws, the entire mouth tenses, the torso

Shaolin swells with each puff of air, the muscles are agitated with energy, and all the senses, especially the eyes, are fully alert. The entire body is electrified. And even with all that, and unlike true rage, it's possible to maintain control and serenity. Breathing also plays a major role in the actions of tension and relaxation, contraction and expansion. After such a display of physical strength, to return your qi vital to your field of elixir (dantian), it only takes an inhalation exercise. To transmit his strength to the extremities, the Shaolin Kung Fu practitioner simply practices an exhalation exercise. To retract his limbs, he needs to inhale. To stretch his limbs out, he needs to exhale. When he shrinks his body and limbs, he looks like a predator crouching in ambush on its prey. When he chooses to attack, he vehemently emerges like a tiger and stretches himself out to attack his prey. His pulse quickens when he is bent on acting offensively. This will speed up the functioning of his sympathetic system, which in turn will cause a rapid circulation of Qi (energy) and blood, resulting in a sudden intensification of his strength. Thus, his offensive action will demonstrate a brutal anger

such as that of a hungry animal. When this happens, every muscle of the Shaolin Kung Fu practitioner's body responds quickly to every intention. His strength radiates as soon as the flow of his vital qi accelerates. When Si Shao reaches its maximum fullness, the tension mobilizes a lot of Qi, ready to be used. Si Shao focuses on simulating physical explosiveness and the power of rage, without being blinded or overstimulated by the force of emotions. The voice is also used in combination with Si Shao; the Qi is used externally by expelling air with a sound that helps stimulate the internal Qi. Often, in the practice of Kung Fu, when you want to release a large amount of force, the voice is used with a cry that comes directly from the Dantian, to stimulate your internal Qi. This sound is born naturally with a strong movement; for example, it's normal to emit a strong sound when we have to move or lift a heavy object. It also helps to release some of the pressure generated by the Si Shao tension. Master Bruno Tombolato

I told him its more interesting how many people will actually BUY those ‘certificates’ as they know there’s no integrity in buying them! I was demonstrating a series of techniques when I was interrupted by another instructor who criticized my teaching, saying it was wrong to give students choices. In order to function under stress he asserted, students should only be given one simple response. In this way they would be able to act instantly without thinking. To illustrate his point he began to tell a parable about a cat. I will have to paraphrase the story but the gist of it goes something like this. One day a cat was walking with a buffalo when they came across a crocodile. The buffalo tried to gore the crocodile but was killed and eaten whilst the cat simply ran up a tree and escaped. The next day the cat was walking with an elephant when they encountered a hunter.

The elephant attempted to swat the hunter with his trunk but was shot and killed whilst the cat ran up a tree and escaped. The story went on and on with the cat befriending a diverse range of unlucky animals. Unfortunately they were all killed in tragic circumstances whilst the hero of the tale simply ran up a tree and escaped. I patiently listened whilst the other instructor finished his story and then having skillfully made his point the man looked smugly around the room. Nodding his head sagely I paused for effect and asked if he could just ask one question: “what if there is no tree?”! The fact is that although I know where the other instructor was coming from he had demonstrated the old adage ‘a little bit of knowledge is dangerous.’ When initially teaching students to survive under stress, it is important that in the early stages students should be provided with a small range of options which deal with the most likely situations using classical or operant conditioning methods (‘stimulus – response’.) This will help students to quickly acquire the requisite key skills, build confidence, avoid ‘mind freeze’ and enable them to respond at the more unconscious level. This type of training will prepare students to act and react. Once those responses are mastered, students will then be taught the ‘what-if’ and the more advanced techniques as this is the element of training which will ultimately allow the student to adapt under pressure. In the current market of Martial Arts where the sale of achievement/rank certificates, where many instructors earn 7 levels in 3 days, you should ask about the roots of your teachers. Most teachers talk about other teachers, but I always explain to my students about my roots as a Martial Artist, as this is what we teach. “I don’t teach you to be soldiers.” I help them trace my roots, introduce them to my teachers in Karate, Aiki Kenpo Jujutsu, BJJ, Kendo and so on. I earned it all, I didn’t buy it! “When you have money in your hand, only you forget who you are, but when you do not have any money in your hand, the whole world forgets who you are.” Bill Gates This is not a saying for a Martial Arts teacher. A Martial Arts teacher is not there for money, we are here for students, for any need, to help support, and for direction. Yes we need to earn our incomes, but we don’t live by the dollar, we live by integrity. Train yourself in mobility and stamina and all, then you will be ready when there’s a need to cut down a tree, and it’ll be easier, but if you try to cut the tree with no preparation, it may not work. In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. Wing Chun International Developing the Wing Chun Mind There are many reasons to begin a journey in martial arts whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for self defence, fitness or confidence to name but a few. For me it was a new direction in life something completely different from what I had done before and from that day I have never looked back. I am Sifu Jason and I have been training Wing Chun for over eight years now and teaching for most of them. I have had the good fortune to have spent the last two years as a direct student of Wing Chun International founder, Master Cameron. Wing Chun is so much more than just a system of self defence, the values it holds can be seen as a way we can live our lives, helping us develop a balance between body, mind and spirit. It explains to us through its many principleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, concepts a n d m o t t o â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s h o w t o develop the physical side of the art and also the mind.

Wing Chun International Setting Goals I was always taught that if you look at what goals you wish to achieve no matter how big or daunting it may seem, the simplest thing to do is break that goal down into smaller achievable goals. A good example is when you are introduced to our first form, Siu Nim Tau (a little idea). The first time you train it can be overwhelming, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how you are going to remember it all, especially when it comes to demonstrating it back to your instructor for your first grade. The easiest way this can be achieved is by working on an individual sentence until you have formed muscle memory. This is then repeated throughout the rest of the form until have focused on each individual element making what looked at first, so complicated now look simple. Then having learned the movementskeleton of Wing Chuns first form you begin to gain a greater understanding of each movement, thus building power, speed and focus for your body and mind.

With the Wing Chun Blueprint your Instructors role is to introduce the „Rules of Three“ concept (always have 3 options) to all the applied practical side of your training, this is done over your twelve grades which are split into three phases. The first phase will be to introduce you to the skeleton, or framework of Wing Chun, the basics of all our training methods. Phase two of your training is about developing the tools to counter or avoid incoming attacks providing answers to your training, your whys?. When you reach phase three you now have the ability to flow and mix between all your training areas using the tools that you have placed in your tool box. This is when your journey gets even more interesting, the rules of three develop into the rules of five, and then the rules of eight… and this is for you to find and own them, Mastery, through all the hours you have spent training them. It’s also a direct reflection on how you have developed your Wing Chun mind.

Applied Wing Chun One of the principles in Wing Chun is about the ability to free yourself from your own force, so that when you are in any situation, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at home, work or on the street and you feel threatened verbally or physically. Instead of allowing the red mist to fall and let your emotions blind you, we can let go of the ego. We have learned that being overly confrontational can make us fall victim to the situation. Once we have let go of our ego it is easier to get rid of our adversaries force as we are reacting to what is going on around us, making it easier to respond, combining their force with our force to deal with the problem effectively. I have seen so many positive changes in myself over the last eight years, especially in my confidence and self-esteem.

It has helped calm my short temper and allowed me to enjoy my time with my wife and children more. W ing Chun has brought more balance to my life… Of course there are still many areas to focus on and develop, which is why I wrote this, to help myself and hopefully you too, to becoming a better person. I know I still have a long way to go and I’m looking forward to the rest of my, or rather our journey, developing the Wing Chun Mind. A Hwarangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Path â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Overcoming the Fear of Death (part 2) A sword fight is not about pummeling your opponent unconscious, to tackle and grapple to submission, to lose and fight another day; it is for either life or death. Imagine as vividly as you can, facing another person with a sword only inches away from you, staring into their eyes. What do you think you would be thinking about? Can you actually stand there not thinking about death, that you are sure you will somehow win unscathed, uncut? That is impossible unless you are completely delusional, sociopathic, psychotic, and narcissistic.

he only way is to accept and embrace death. A swordsman, a warrior, a Hwarang does not battle to just to survive, but to fight for a cause and to protect and if necessary to die in the process, sacrificing their lives. By this definition, the nurses and doctors, the public volunteers, first responders and law enforcement personnel during this crisis deserves our respect and praise as they have put the lives and well being of others ahead of their own. They are truly our modern day warriors, another example that courage and strength comes from self-sacrifice and not from self-centeredness. If one’s primary goal is self–preservation, then they could not face the swordsman, having nothing to sacrifice for except for the self, which is self-defeating, they will run to live another day. This is why in many sword duels the fight is won before it begins. It is the one who is more committed to dying that will prevail as they have made peace with death; making them calm, clear minded, without distractions, purely present on the target ahead. The one who wants to live is crying out in his mind, repeating the mantra, “I DON’T’ WANT TO DIE!” The mind will be full of distractions of all the reasons why they can’t die, about their loved ones and family, all the pleasures they will be deprived of, all the things which are unfulfilled, and there will be no room to think of anything else. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, because they were afraid to die is precisely why they will die.

The courage and strength to overcome the fear of death comes from the purpose of living, of their beliefs, for others, and most supremely for God. What about the one who wants to die, who is suicidal? Surely, they are not afraid of dying and so they must make a good swordsman? Wanting to die does not mean one has overcome fear; it just means they are afraid of living. A person does not want to die because they feel they possess meaning, purpose, value, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly the opposite. They feel worthless and devoid of value and purpose. They are also running away, just in the other direction. In both cases of the swordsman whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s afraid to die and the one who wants to die, they both suffer from self-centeredness, believing that they have power over their lives and it is up to them whether they live or die. Hence, they are both irrational as they both function out of fear. The true swordsman has dedicated himself to train the mind and the body in the practice of swordsmanship in order to increase the odds of survival with the full awareness and humility that he may die, but with the satisfaction of knowing that he did the best he could. In swordsmanship there is no trying, only doing. You cannot truly practice sword fighting, as that would mean getting cut, maimed, or even die. Practicing with wooden or bamboo swords can teach you the movements, but it cannot teach you how to prepare and train from being cut or maimed.

One slight mistake can result in death. There can be no mistakes as every mistake can mean death. Think about living this way where every mistake you make, the consequence is death; that is the Way of the Sword, the Warrior’s Path. The consequences of a mistake are extreme and dire for a swordsman, a warrior, a Hwarang, it would mean the life of oneself, the one he’s protecting, or both. This required a warrior, a Hwarang to be always mindful to never make a mistake. And surely, that is not possible to never err or never make a mistake as we are all human, but it forced them to take all their decisions and actions seriously.

Today, martial art schools have become a haven for motivational memes, new age self help remedies, and just ways of enhancing self-esteem and fitness centered more on effort rather than results based all on positive reinforcement, striving to keep their students happy to increase their membership. Of course, this is only a reflection of our current society, which once again strives to create a utopia where everyone is happy and flourishing by playing gods. This time there is no God to blame, but only ourselves so we device another plan as gods to control nature, namely the weather, then we can save the planet and save ourselves.

To think that we will never die, to wield nature to our will is absurd and completely irrational. So, it is not that we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think that death is imminent that makes us panic in fear, but it is because we lack the control to determine when we die. And, there lays the absurdity to think we have control over death. That is the same for a swordsman, a fighter, who thinks so highly of himself, that he is the best, invincible, and can never die. To think that life should always be good and nothing bad can happen to us is also completely absurd. However, by teaching children early on that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay to make mistakes, to do wrong, only reinforcing through positive affirmation

deludes them to think they can do no wrong. They never learn how to deal with criticism and negative consequences, so when they are confronted with the harsh realities of existence, which is more often cruel and painful, they either lash out with anger or panic in fear. The truth is that man is a fallen being that we are imperfect, thus no matter what we try to do to solve a problem with the best of intentions will always bring about unforeseen negative consequences. You cannot derive perfection from imperfection just as mortal beings cannot be immortal. It is because we are imperfect that we should strive always for betterment, seeking to learn and improve without arrogance of omniscience, as we should strive to live each day with gratitude, making the best while we are alive without fearing our mortality. Of course we no longer duel and fight with swords, but the ethos and wisdom gained from swordsmanship is the true value of martial arts yesterday and is still today. It is not to inflate our ego and delude our minds with enhanced self-esteem, but it is to be humble and to prepare our lives so that we may die well, not in panic, but in peace. As martial artists we train everyday, all of our lives learning how to fight for a fight that may never come. As we advance, we come to realize that we do not have anything to prove to ourselves or to others and we never seek or provoke a fight, avoiding it at all costs, realizing the value of our training is not fighting, but in the inner peace, calmness, and humility which it instills. At least that is how it should be. However, when the fight, the enemy comes we hope to be prepared, to be ready not with techniques as surely we know countless many, but that we may face our enemy, our demon with courage, ready to die and not coward, panicking with the fear of death. In contrast, a person who is not a martial artist relies on others, primarily the police, the government to protect them from harm, taking the risk that the probability of them never being in a violent altercation is on their side. This offers them a false sense of security and well being, allowing them to live out their lives in some comfort. However, when the unexpected attack takes place, they panic and rely on their instinctual fight or flight response to save them. This is the condition we are facing now, a whole society of people acting out on instinct without any reason or thought. This is how we as teachers and practitioners of martial arts can be a positive force within our society by teaching how to overcoming our primal fears. Then, we must show how to apply these principles and values learned on the mat into their daily lives to live as a warrior, as a Hwarang (A Flowering Knight). Not to live in arrogance and defiance, but by being respectful and humble to the fragility of life and the supreme power of God, living our lives mindfully striving to always do our best with what we are endowed for each of our purpose on earth in order to honor our Creator. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;ŚAnd can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?â&#x20AC;? Entering the Trance I remember the story read in one book. The peasant lost a chicken. He searched for her for a long time in the vicinity of the village, but his attempts were unsuccessful. Then the peasant came to the healer and asked him to tell him if the bird was alive, and whether to continue the search. The witch doctor, without getting up from his chair, took up his left leg in the calf muscle area. After that he fell into a trance and after a while answered the peasant that his bird is alive and, probably, that he will soon find it. The witch turned to his subconscious and received a response through the kinesthetic channel. In fact, many people can "walk" into the past and the future and receive answers to the questions posed. At first it is important to trace the stages of entering into trance as accurately as possible. I. Relaxation: Take a comfortable position in space (lying down, sitting). II. Application of the formula 7 Âą 2: a) Reproduce aloud 4 obvious (describing the real state of things) statements. For example, "I feel myself lying (sitting)"; "My eyes are open (closed)," and so on; b) The 5th statement is hypothetical , it can be started with the words: "Perhaps I begin to feel relaxation in the whole body" (or "take" individual parts of the body - "in the right hand and in the left leg", "in the left hand and in the right leg "); c) The 6th statement is obvious , for example: "I feel how my head touches ... the surface of the pillow", etc.; d) The 7th statement is hypothetical . For example, "Perhaps my eyes are closing, and maybe they want to remain open"; e) The 8th statement - stating : "I hear sounds," and so on; e) The 9th statement is again hypothetical . III. Agree with your subconscious for what time you need a trance. Asking politely your subconscious about whether it is ready to work with you, determine what signal will be when you answer "yes" and when you answer "no". For example, "no" is an impulse in the left hand. Wait for a while, listening to your body. (The signal can be reproduced both in visual images and in sound images - to whom it is more convenient.) After confirming your subconscious mind about the readiness to work, inform him that the trance time should be, for example, 20 minutes, after which you must return to the normal state . IV. Work on the formula 7 Âą 2 - work in the trance state, the formation of a program for the subconscious (Figure 25). Exercises for "squeezing" and "stretching" time Time is subjective as quantity, and therefore the phrases "compression" and "stretching" are very relative and do not have a complete dependence on the operational actions-influences on the chronostream. Here, the individual's own reserves are used rather than the resources of the general time flow. Let's consider four variants. 1. Enter the focus of your "I" (immerse yourself in the central point of the body - the solar plexus) and, after presenting a volume ball, stretch it or squeeze it. Remember ("anchored") the condition that has arisen. If necessary, reproduce this state by "shortening" or "stretching" time. The higher the accuracy of the reproduced sensation, the brighter it is, and the effect of this exercise is clearer and more real. 2. It is aimed at mastering internal energy resources through mastering own chronosender. It is necessary to build the projection of the golden spiral expanding upward, in the center of the human brain and simulate the impulses that are constantly flowing along it. When the thought-form is strengthened in the mind and becomes felt by the cells of the brain, it is necessary to pull the spiral upwards or to squeeze into an elastic spring, fixing it in the desired position. To switch to the normal chrono mode, do seven deep breaths and seven expirations, mentally turning the spiral into golden dust and scattering it along the brain structure. In this way, partial renewal of nerve cells and tissues will occur. 3. It is necessary to draw a circle on an even surface and walk clockwise, aiming at the consciousness towards the center and not physically breaking the trajectory. If the work is aimed at "stretching" time, mentally release from a limited space, widening the circle to infinity. The result will appear when the movement of the body is fully automated, and the consciousness will come out of the physical framework, striving for the only goal at this time. 4. Walking through a large labyrinth, drawn on a large area. The task is similar to the previous options. Purposeful: creating a timeline Stages: 1. Identify what contributed to the appearance of the time line goal (VL). 2. Identify the need to achieve the goal as a percentage. Example: the target is 100%. There is or is not a possibility at the moment to be close to the goal (to be anywhere, to use something, etc.). Score from 100%. Let's say it is rated at 30%. 100% - 30% = 70%. Thus, the percentage of the need to achieve the goal is 70%. 3. Disassemble and determine examples of possible options in achieving the goal. What could help move towards this goal? The simulation-distortion process: â&#x20AC;˘ circumstances; â&#x20AC;˘ people (people around). Distribute by levels; â&#x20AC;˘ my opportunities. Circumstances. How could circumstances arise when moving towards the goal. Arrange the "pictures" in order:

Identify the alleged obstacles. Identify direct and indirect. Arrange them in order:

Combine the ways of moving to a goal with obstacles. People. Who could participate in the realization of my goal. Interested people. To build on the importance. Subsequently, work with them on the circumstances.

Uninterested people, hindering the achievement of the goal. To build on the importance. By direct intervention and indirect:

Subsequently, work with them: • directly, specifically with them; • indirectly, through other people interested in the goal. Determine the ratio "for" and "against". My possibilities. That depends on me personally. Identify and build by relevance:

Check through the subconscious possibilities of achieving the goal during this time. If not, then: • the question of a more accurate time to achieve the goal; • view over VL; • compare with the already built VL before it, how much the location of the "pictures" has changed; • correction of "pictures" on the overhead line; • checking for environmental friendliness of the state (to a satisfactory state from the "picture" of the goal already achieved). To look "from there" to the "present". 6. Scrolling back and forth with different speeds (the process of achieving the goal). 7. Identify and note the moment of entry into the beginning of the goal-setting work. 8. After the completion of the process of goalsetting, "negotiate" with the subconscious about taking the process under control. To personally step back from the very goal, trust in the Higher mind. Quit the center of events - remove the "hook" for the final result (goal). (Mistrust of God is doubt, fear.)

Systema Combining realities This process involves several stages and can be represented in the form of a scheme (Figure 26).

Fixing the program of target-setting 1. The alignment of several time lines (OL) of parallel OLs of obvious reality (our world). 2. Scrolling forward (backward) the simulated action. 3. The combination of realities a, b, c. 4. Stop the internal dialogue. 5. Send the program to the subconscious. 6. To move away from the "goal", to remove the "clue" for the final result. Collecting the intention to hit one goal This process depends on the presence of like-minded people and on the ability to reinforce their personal intent with their aspirations (Figure 27).

Systema Overcoming Obstacles (Memofopa passing through an obstacle) 1. Go to the wall, see how this obstacle is overcome in one or three different from our realities (the modeling-distortion process). 2. Promote the most daring and ridiculous decisions. Pain in the ears is a sign of the greatest irritation from what you hear. Eyes. The problem with the eyes means a symbolic protest against what we are forced to see either in ourselves or in our lives. We are literally beginning to disperse our vision so as not to see clearly what is happening "[64] . The change by ourselves of our attitude to ourselves, to other and to life situations is borne out by the correction of our field structure and, accordingly, the physical form of sensations is corrected. We can follow the energy field structure of a person either directly, from the side of the energy drop, or indirectly on the physical body. Since through the energy layers information, supported by strong energy, gets on the body, in particular, on the muscles, materializing there in the form of all kinds of clamps, there are ways to "twist" these clamps ("zapadki") from the body. In healing, this is called "correction", if the joints are "jammed", and - "lazhenem" - the restoration of vital energy channels in order for them to flow energy - alive. They also say: "adjust the strings of life" in our body for its normal functioning. In the olden times in every squad or artel were people who were engaged in the restoration of soldiers after the battles. We consider in our work exercises mainly preventive, relating to joint exercises, special massage, tuning the "strings of life." Articular exercises are a warm-up of the joints both independently and when one person is stretched by several people. This is done gradually, beginning with one joint, moving further to a greater number of joints. It is important in one session to "untwist", to stretch as much as possible of the joints. One person produces a stretching, and the rest keep the body in the least mobility. Joint exercises can be done once a month. Special massage is aimed at warm-up, fragmentation of "lumps" in the body, in muscles, release of congestion in the channels through which the Force flows. Initially, the body searches for these clips, and then they warm up. This is done by the method of joint gymnastics: a person or himself "breaks" and kneads muscles, or someone else does this, with constant communication with him about places particularly clamped in the muscles. Before the beginning of the procedure and in the process of it, two hands are stroked along the body. "Lazhene" we begin with the upper belt, then the middle of the body, the lower belt. This can be compared to a non-contact massage. Adjusting the "strings of life". Tapping, ringing, opening 1, 2 and 3 gates, setting up the body, harmonizing its parts. There were different ways to open the gate. One way is to ring. It is carried out by tuning the "strings of life" in our body. In Fig. 28 shows the current of force over the human body. Stages of opening: 1. One person or several become and extends hands with the palms outward to a sensation of tension in the veins and joints (see Figure 28).

The same is done with the legs and spine - we become, gradually bending forward, straightening our back, even as if bending in it to the sensation of the same tension in the legs and back (Figure 29). Fig. 29. Opening of the "gate" 3. In the same way, we reproduce the state of tension along the diagonal: the left leg is the right hand and vice versa. At each stage, after stretching the joints, a ringing occurs. It can be a bell ringing or tapping a stick on the floor. You can start with a tapping with a stick, since in this case it is possible to feel the passing vibration coming from the floor along the elongated veins and joints. The task is to listen to this vibration with your feet, palms and outer part of the ear: the left foot - the right hand - the left ear. At the second stage, it is important to listen to the crown and coccyx - to achieve a sense of vibration with sound throughout the spine. Further it is necessary to punch these channels simultaneously, to feel vibration at once in all of them - the body should ring. If you have achieved the ringing of your body, this means that there is no congestion in the channels. If somewhere it is, and you do not find it immediately, then go to the joint gymnastics, special massage, etc.

Accumulation of fine energy VD Plykin thinks[65] that closed information-energy flows in the universe are circulating on the principle of a spatial spiral, an energy vortex. The information-energy spiral in the substance cell is a microcopy of the global informationenergy spiral of the Galaxy. VD Plykin's conclusion gives grounds to believe that the energy vortex that is reproduced-created physically in space in the form of a spiral vortex with the movement of the hand with information-energy support transfers information "stuffing" from one biological system to another, in this case from one man to another. Numerous experimental data obtained at different research centers at different times indicated the existence of superweak photon radiation in all types of biosystems studied. In accordance with this, in 1965 VP Kaznacheev and his colleagues proposed that the biosystem can be represented as a nonequilibrium photonic constellation[66] (ensemble), existing due to the constant influx of energy from the outside. The protein-nucleic structures in the systems coexist in unity, thanks to the connections based on photon constellation. The latter constitutes an information-regulatory system of cells possessing a colossal margin of reliability.

Systema Quantum information is stored in molecular compounds of cellular structures. This information can be extracted in biochemical transformations that trigger the previous information flows both existing inside the cell and transmitted to it from the outside, for example, from other cells, other biosystems, from the external electromagnetic environment, etc. The cell consists of a nucleus, cell membranes, various fibers formed by micromolecular compounds. But the action of this complex "mechanism" is based on the transfer of electromagnetic signals through macromolecular chains. It is worth their "turn off", stopping the food cells, and its complex "mechanism" will begin to break down. With the phenomenon of transmission of biological information by quanta of electromagnetic nature, the phenomenon of remote intercellular information interactions (DMV) is connected. Academician VP Kaznacheyev and his colleagues conducted research on the DMV. For the experiment, cell cultures were selected. They were exposed to ultrasonic irradiation, various solutions, viruses, etc. Exactly the same cultures in the neighboring cell were not subjected to these actions. Their interaction was realized only by means of ultraweak electromagnetic radiation of the cells themselves in two soldered flasks separated by a quartz plate. Nevertheless, in both cases a "mirror" pathological effect was observed. It was expressed in the degradation and death of the cell culture. Man, of course, is not a plant, and the transmission of information takes place in a different way. People need to activate energy centers and be sure to follow the pair transfer from a similar center to a similar one (throat - throat, yarlo - yarlo, etc.). There is a good expression "from heart to heart". A person who perceives the world only with his head (mind) will never understand a person who perceives the world with his soul and heart (Figure 30).

Fig. 30. Functional-energy channels of information transfer In one of the books on psychology, now I find it difficult to remember in which, the method of Dr. Dulfert was described. The method was called: "Living in the image of another person." The doctor initially represented the features of this person, his gaze, his manners, his voice, etc. Then the researcher, as it were, connected with an imaginary concrete individual, forming with him a single whole. After that, as it were, the penetration of his thoughts began. It was also noted that the transfer of thought required some excitement, activation of the psyche, and to "read" thoughts, calm, stop the internal dialogue. Absorption of energy by the body goes on constantly and without any effort of man - through food, water, physical exercises and, mainly, through the air.

Absorption of energy is carried out in quantities necessary for the normal functioning of the body, but under adverse conditions, the influx of energy may not compensate for energy losses. In this regard, for the recruitment of energy, different techniques have been developed, but they will not succeed if they are applied unconsciously. The set of energy and its movement are carried out primarily by the stability of thought. When recruiting energy, it is necessary to imagine how it infuses into the body, spreads throughout the body, animates every muscle, every cell. The more imaginative and vivid the idea, the more effective the collection of energy. At the initial stages of training, one should refuse to hold extra long-term energy sets! An image should be developed in yourself and in your mind gradually (working with a picture, a hologram).

When recruiting energy, we must remember that one should not invest a strong-willed effort. It is necessary to give the order that should be used, and then compose a mental picture of what is happening. A calmly given order, accompanied by a mental picture of what is happening, is much better than an intensified "desire." An imaginary representation of the process of penetration of energy into the body is an indispensable condition for the energy fence, therefore, with a well-developed imagination, one image representation is enough. A set of energy by rhythmic breathing The energy is collected by rhythmic breathing. Exercise should be done 3 times a day for 15 minutes. Be careful. Every morning, take 5 minutes to prepare for the next exercise: concentrate your thoughts on a great cause. 1 Week. (After or before eating.) For 5 minutes, concentrate on developing your energy abilities. Then sit on the couch and relax all the muscles of your body to such an extent that you do not feel even their slightest physical strain, forget about them as possible. When you bring yourself into this state, take a full deep breath: your abdominal cavity is "raspiratsya". (The breath should last 8 seconds, the delay - 8 seconds, the exhalation - 8 seconds.) The duration of one cycle of breathing is 24 seconds. You are "doing" with your breath an equilateral triangle. Do not hurry. The duration of the exercise should not exceed 5 minutes, of which 5 minutes are training (see above). 2 week. (3 times before or after eating.) After 5 minutes of preparation, close your right nostril with your finger and take a deep breath through the left nostril for 10 seconds, then 10 seconds - hold breath, and then exhale through the right nostril. After 10 cycles with a frequency of 2 breaths per minute, change the nostrils when inhaling and exhaling. 3 week. With great desire! Exercise consists in alternating breathing of one and the other nostrils as well as in the previous exercise (2 weeks). Each breath lasts for 15 seconds, the delay is 10 seconds and the exhalation is 15 seconds. Change the nostrils after 10 cycles. 4 week. Exercise consists in alternating breathing: inhale through one, and exhale through another nostril. Only the time of breathing increases. Inhale - 20 seconds, delay - 10 seconds, exhalation - 20 seconds. Time for the exercise is from 15 to 30 minutes, plus 5 minutes for preparation (1 second = 1 beat of the pulse).

Systema When doing this exercise, you will feel the "movement" of the spirit, you can feel the vital energy well.

Hand sensitivity training Training sensitivity of the hands allows you to open the outputs of the energy system in the fingers and palms of the hands, create a steady flow of energy between them and increase the sensitivity of the skin to the impact of energy fields. In the process of training, the ability to feel the fields and the ability to control the energy flow is developed. In this case, hands begin to work not only in the mode of energy transfer, but also in the mode of hypersensitive reception. Usually, the right hand of men is always giving (+), or active, and the left hand is perceiving (-), or shielding. The left-hander has the opposite polarity. The very tips of the nail phalanges of the index and ring fingers, as a rule, should have the greatest sensitivity. The sensitivity of the palms is much lower. So, firstly, circular movements during the exercise are performed only clockwise relative to the motionless hand (Figure 31).

Fourth, when performing exercises, it is necessary to represent the energy movement in a figurative way, to concentrate attention on sensations at the fingertips and palms (heat, tingling). The sensation of the fields between the palms (at each stage it is small and increases as the fingers and palms develop). Exercises are performed one to two months for 1-1,5 hours a day, then for 30 minutes a day and can be single or divided (3-5 minutes each).

Kung Fu Important information for the beginning student Despite modern technology, it is not always easy for the beginning student to find out, all the important information that is necessary for a successful start in the martial arts. Especially in the traditional martial arts and in view of the student teacher relationship, the student is obligated to proactively obtain information about the art. Nevertheless, it is not always easy for p e o p l e i n t h e We s t o r f r o m o t h e r cultures to understand this straightaway. This is what I have noticed in the decades I have

Kung Fu been teaching. My school offers numerous tools to the interested b e g i n n e r, w h i c h , a p a r t from the lessons, should make his or her way into the art and our family as easy as possible. These include, on the technical side, various instructional DVDs (also available on Budo International.com), concerning the suitable nutrition two nutrition books and for a better understanding of the art our classic r eader â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kung Fu without secr etsâ&#x20AC;? (available in many languages and also on BudoInternational.com). The aim of this article is to help the student even more to have a good start and to clarify any possible issues, which havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been mentioned so far. Again and again, people ask for clarifications on the following topics: Shoes: My instructors sometimes ask me why we practice Kung Fu with shoes, as one primarily trains barefoot in other Asian arts. The answer is, just like our art itself, simple and pragmatic: It is very likely that one wears shoes in the case of emergency, that is why one should train with shoes for the case of emergency, apart from hygienic reasons. Since time immemorial, people have always been training and teaching Kung Fu in shoes. Even if the uniform today is designed for the training (trousers with an elastic band, cotton T-shirt and Kung Fu shoes), it originates from the traditional clothing that was worn in China in the past.

Kung Fu Mo Kwoon: Laymen and new students often speak of the “dojo” when they refer to the school as the place itself. However, dojo is a Japanese term. We practitioners of a Chinese, traditional martial art speak of “Mo Kwoon” (pronounced as “Mo Gwun”), which means war room. The greeting at the entrance emphasises the entry into the Mo Kwoon and the upcoming training session or lesson, which is associated with it.

Sifu: In the West, we refer to the person who teaches us in all matters of body movement as “trainer”. No other word could possibly be further away from what he actually is. As a student of a school one has a teacher. There is also the component of family. Therefore, it would be more appropriate to refer to this teacher as “master” or “teacher”. But above all, one addresses him or her by “sifu”. He or she can be represented by instructors (sihing / sije). For the beginner it is important to know that “sifu” is a title. Thus, he or she should also address other sifus as such. However, since you only have one sifu, you should address other sifus in combination with his or her name, e.g. “Hello, sifu Peter Müller”.

Sihing / Sije: As a traditional Kung Fu school we cultivate a familiar atmosphere in our contact with each other. Advanced students above the black belt level, for example, are called “sihing” (older brother) or “sije” (older sister) by beginners. This is not only a respectful gesture, but it also shows his or her own position in the family. Little brother or little sister, in Chinese “sidai” and “simui”, on the other hand, one does not hear very often, because one strives, as in the Asian culture, to save each and everyone’s face and to avoid “degrading” anyone.

Kung Fu The first levels: Once the beginner has started taking lessons, he or she should find out about is to be mastered technically for the first levels. The beginner earns the first belt, the white one, by attending regularly in class and by showing commitment and will power in and outside the classroom. The white belt, today, also stands for the first â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bai Siâ&#x20AC;? (to request the teacher), and thus it represents, after passing the examination, the official initiation ritual. The white belt

is followed by the yellow and orange belt. At this point the beginner demonstrates that he or she has understood the five basic stances of our art, that he or she has mastered them and is able to do the footwork with them. The order of all the levels for the beginner are as follows: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, red, purple, black belt (first degree).

Dan / master degrees: Upon reaching the black belt one is simultaneously holder of the 1st Dan (first master degree). Thus, one is considered to be a new graduate of the basic school. In our system there are ten master degrees. The higher the master degree the more experienced one is. However, with increasing number, the criteria prioritised for the particular degree also involve aspects, which are not related to techniques. Hence, for the successful completion of the 5th master degree, one not only assesses the technical level, but also the amount of students one leads. Master degrees can basically divided into three categories: 1st to 3rd Dan (good student), 4th to 6th Dan (master / sifu) and 7th to 9th Dan (grandmaster). The 10th master degree is still held by one person, namely by the head of style. In this case my teacher, grandmaster Dr. Chiu Chi Ling, who has given me the honour of being his successor.

Seminars: During the regular classes one starts with the basics and the most important lessons for the first levels. Our art is so wide-ranging that these lessons often are not enough to impart all the necessary knowledge. That is why we have established a structure, which grants the student an extra boost by means of seminars. These seminars are not compulsory, they ensure, however, a fast and efficient

Kung Fu progress for the student. Especially as a student of the BlackBelt programme, the beginner (as well as advanced students of course) gains a dual benefit: He or she can visit each lesson at his subsidiary school, plus he or she benefits from various advantages and discounts. Increased commitment is always rewarded in one way or another. Always.

Equipment: Apart from the regular uniform and a few additional T-shirts, sooner or later, the student is going to need special equipment such as boxing or Lei Tai gloves. Jab pads or whole training systems are also wanted occasionally. The student often doesn’t know that his or her instructor can also organise or order these items. With decade-long experience in the martial arts my instructors and I know which products have proven to be useful. We advise our students with pleasure before and after they make the purchase, and we organise the desired item at our reliable supplier. In combination with my book “Kung Fu without secrets”, these topics should provide the beginning student with the most important information, in order to facilitate a smooth start in our school. Finally, apart from all the books and articles, it is of course also the conversation with the instructor or teacher, which should bring new knowledge to the student, and which should help him or her to make progress. An instructor, this is at least the way it is at my schools, is always going to lend an ear to the student, in order to show to him or her how he or she can solve his or her challenges and uncertainties. It is not for nothing that our traditional martial art facilitates access to a family structure, which offers a helpful “older sister” or a helpful “older brother” to the beginner. Thus, in case of doubt ask your sihing or sije. Much energy to all beginners and I wish you a successful start in your new Kung Fu career!

In this work, Grand Master Réné Latosa emphasizes how to use the Latosa-Escrima concepts: balance, speed (timing and distance), power, focus (attitude) and transition, to boost all the movement aspects used in the successful execution of any offensive or defensive action. Could there be a better word to describe the innumerable attempts of a child to remain standing up and then walk? Or in the remarkable efforts made by a child no to lose his balance while he strives to keep his bicycle in motion? We fight from our conception, we do it to overcome the previous stage, we constantly fight for self-improvement, making such an ability an indispensable item to survive. The "Struggle" is a process of human development, a desire for self-improvement. rav Maga is a modern art, created from current reality, which, without theoretical discourse, infiltrates practitioners with a healthy and upright way of life, forming responsible citizens capable of pursuing their goals. The rules of the classes are educational, and once incorporated, they work the four principles of the Krav Maga life path:

• Courage: facing obstacles, regardless of their size. • Emotional balance: controlling emotions, not allowing fear to impede action. • Patience: changing of posture in relation to life and to oneself: it occurs gradually, each in its own time. • Respect: respecting yourself and your neighbor, even the enemy. The student learns these principles through the routine of physical training and its difficulties, aware of the path that is needed to acquire them. Adults, children or adolescents assimilate these principles with the same intensity becoming part of their own nature; the desire to fight for his goals and perseverance even when encountering difficulties, balance in the face of situations, independence, all this puts them in a position of total self-control and away from violence. Facing life with simplicity, solving situations with objectivity, that’s what the Krav Maga philosophy of life is all about. Some learn Krav Maga as self-defense, others take it to the next level: understanding and bringing the Krav Maga into personal life to incorporate its teachings in the everyday. To think, feel and act with a new posture. Clarity, objectivity and self-confidence are tools that are acquired in training and applied in personal life. Focusing on an attack in class is

Krav Maga like setting a goal and running after it to reach it. Being ready to defend life at real risk makes any personal difficulties small. Consequently, professional challenges, difficulties in school coexistence or other barriers that life presents us, and which were previously seen as insurmountable giants, become smaller and do not make us retreat. We receive stories on a daily basis from students who have already reacted in situations of aggression on the street when there was no other possibility. We have already received testimonies from mothers thanking that their children had been saved on more than one occasion, from having rolled out of the car in an accident, to the fact of having improved their quality of life, either by opting for a healthier behavior or by striving to get a career advancement, or even by preparing hard for school exams. When students feel free from the situation of being hostages to violence, they live their lives differently and that's how a better world is built. It's up to us to choose the attitude of controlling the situation, or that of permitting that we are controlled and limited by it. Taking responsibility is the first step. The next is to learn to fall and get up stronger. Our challenge is to form true warriors, who will be able to fight for their happiness and quality of life. Fighting and winning in "fair fight" ...

The Krav Maga ground fighting techniques In self-defense, the ideal is to solve the aggression before reaching the ground, where the confrontation is more expeditious. The Krav Maga system has been created with simple, fast and objective techniques to solve any situation as quickly as possible and with the maximum security for the defender, with answers for any type of aggression, no matter where the threat might come from, be it frontally, laterally, from behind; standing, sitting or lying down. The same line of thought of defense techniques is used regardless of position, the difference is mobility; therefore, in training, it's important to develop agility, simulating situations where the defender will be attacked in various

Master Kobi positions, carrying out attack and defense movements from and in every possible direction, in which it must be achieved the same ability to defend effectively in any of the three positions, standing, sitting or lying down.

We divide aggressions on the ground into four situations The aggressor is above the victim's body: • The aggressor above, in front of the victim, in the middle distance (boxing blow situation, etc.). • The aggressor above, facing the victim, in the short distance (strangulation or grip situation, etc.). • The aggressor above and behind, the victim facing the ground, close range. • The aggressor above and behind, the victim facing the ground, medium distance. In all situations, we follow the same principle that we learn in Krav Maga: defense and attack, release and attack, always at the same time. When the attack is the choke on the ground, the technique to release the fingers under the throat is the same that we used in the standing strangulation attack, looking for the weakest point of the grip: the thumb. If you are at middle distance, release the choke with one hand while your other hand hits the attacker's fingers around your neck, or strikes him in his eyes. If the aggressor is very close, we don't exert any force in the opposite direction, instead we make the release with both hands against his thumbs and then we grab his head pulling it towards us: a bite in the jugular, ear, nose or other sensitive point, will break the aggressor's resistance momentarily withdrawing him from combat. Thus we gain time to advance and change our position. In another case, the attacker is sitting on your body and the attack is the boxing punch. As in standing exercises, intercept the aggression if it's a circular blow, or divert the attack if it is a frontal blow, while hitting a vital area (attack to the groin is the most appropriate). It's then that we move on to the second part: getting out from under the aggressor. To get out of the position under the aggressor, we use the movement of the hips, with a twist of a half turn to the side, reaching the position of "bridge", thus we open a gap and we come out from under the aggressor to get up. Remember to never get out in the direction of the attacker's legs, always go towards his flank, at shoulder height, achieving greater control over his vital points. We do not always need to react at the first moment, many times it is preferable to wait a bit so that the position of the aggressor allows the application of blows. If necessary, a secondary attack can be carried out, such as a bite in the ribs or in the leg; a light blow to the face or genital region is a way to force the aggressor to change position and thus facilitate his reaction. In Krav Maga we learn to use any possible help to solve a situation, since our only objective is to return safely home. If you are on the ground with an attacker on top of you and you have at your fingertips any object that can increase the power of your defensive blow, use it. If you are on the ground and the attacker approaches with the intention of attacking you, leave one leg bent on the ground to facilitate your movement and raise the other leg sticking the knee to your chest with the heel pointing the attacker and your hands in position to defend your face. When the attacker reaches the ideal distance, kick him in his knee or his groin. Then get up as quickly as possible.

Krav Maga Always remember that, once the attack has started, staying on the ground should be as short as possible. We never know when other bullies will appear.

Security tips Unlike Martial Arts, the basic principle of self-defense is to ensure a safe returning home, physical integrity is the Krav Maga practitioner's trophy. The nature of the intelligent human being is that of retreating in the face of a threat, and fear, which is always present, is a reflection of that. Animals are said to smell fear. Human beings cannot smell fear, but they recognize that feeling in their fellow man. Fear is part of the body's defense system, however, it's up to us to know how to control it and guide it correctly. There are several ways to control and direct fear. Some seek training methods that give the students the opportunity to develop their own ability to handle complicated situations. Another way is to acquire habits that lead the student to prevent and anticipate danger, managing to avoid or minimize it, and thus learning to handle the situation more easily. This is what this column is about. One of the things we mostly seek to improve in the Krav Maga training is peripheral vision. It helps us see aggression movements approaching our body, allowing us to prepare our reaction so frustrating the attack. This same principle must be used at any time, in perception, in prevention; offensively or defensively. For example, when entering a

new environment, with a brief glance we must perceive and detect if the environment is favorable or unfavorable, If there are known elements, if the environment or the people present can mean danger, we must look for and identify in the premises what could help us as an instrument of defense and/or attack; evaluate and choose the best location that offers the best vision, protection and ease of movement. By obeying these principles in any environment, whether on a dark street, a public transport, a restaurant or any other place, we can reduce the surprise factor. In dark streets, between parked cars, near low walls or thick bushes, people can hide, if we walk through them we become more vulnerable, therefore, staying away from those elements will provide us with more security, and we’ll have more time and better conditions to react to an assault. By avoiding dark and little crowded streets, we avoid situations of vulnerability. When we sit in a restaurant, to minimize the surprise factor, we shouldn't sit with our back turned on the direction of the larger movement of people, such as the front door or the rest rooms. It must transmit confidence, alertness, body capacity. We don’t mean the size or body mass, shorter people also transmit the message of firmness and security with their gait, their gaze and the straight position of their spine. Whoever walks crestfallen and shrunken will always be seen as an insecure person without any capacity of reaction, and that clear demonstration of weakness attracts the aggressors. A straight body, a raised and attentive gaze, firm steps, that is the body language that transmits the message of strength and power, without exaggeration so that it doesn't seem like a staging ... These small attitudes, along with body posture, provide the body with a language that transmits to potential aggressors that they must choose another target, otherwise they will have to face a powerful reaction. In general, that message is enough to avoid conflict. At first glance, these safety tips may seem exaggerated, but they can be gradually incorporated into our behavior until they become natural, and what previously seemed hostile and annoying in the environment, has a new aspect to our view. It’s a fact that we are actually experiencing an ever increasing violence. While, in the irrational world of animals, violence takes place only to ensure survival - under the impulse of instinct - in the world of human beings, violence occurs when rationality is left aside. But, strange as it may seem, it's with rationality and emotional balance that we must defend ourselves. Gaining control of the situation with words and attitudes to avoid a confrontation is the smartest way to achieve security. When an aggressor threatens someone with violence, the threatened person can bring him back to reason with words or the body language. But when all this fails, it's necessary to be in good shape to know what to do. That's where Krav Maga comes in. Train, get ready. Wait for the exact moment, reach the sensitive points. When threatened, don't try to figure out how to escape, figure out how to take down the attacker. And remember that the streets are not a ring with referees, and what is at stake is life itself. With simple and objective techniques, you can defend against any type of aggression, so don't give up easily. Be calm, walk with composure and avoid vulnerable situations. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. THE QUEST FOR THE SOKE-DAI REVISITED By Grandmaster John Pellegrini Previously, I wrote an essay on the complicated and daunting issues associated with the transmission of a Martial Art / Style to an inheritor (Soke-Dai) selected by the Founder within his family or, if necessary, outside of his family. This subject, of interest to most martial artists, requires further examination for several important and practical reasons: • The preservation of the Art / Style’s unique history and its contribution to the world heritage of the Martial Arts. We can call this “The Historical Perspective”. • The preservation of the specific strategies, tactics, techniques and principles of that particular Art / Style. We can call this “The Technical Structure”. • The preservation of the cultural, moral and conceptual underpinnings of that particular Art / Style. We can call this “The P h i l o s o p h i c a l Framework”. • The preservation of the official archives of all documents issued by the Art’/ Style’s Governing Authority (such as Certificates and Licenses), and all published material about that art. We can call this “The Lineage Records”.

Every Martial Art in existence today is known to us and available for study and enjoyment because it was preserved, maintained and passed down to us by generations of Teachers, starting with the original Founder, his first “Soke-Dai” and all subsequent ones. If this effective transmission mechanism had not been established, not only we would not have the choices and the opportunities to learn the vast variety of Arts and Styles we presently have, but we would have also been deprived of the knowledge of their interesting histories, technical attributes and valuable philosophies. It would have been also a significant cultural loss for humanity. Of course, realistically, it is also important to honestly recognize that not EVERY Martial Art / Style that exists today, or that has been passed down to us, is an authentic, valid and original fighting system or a unique cultural or philosophical treasure worth preserving. In fact, there are numerous instances, especially in our current era, of ridiculously concocted productions not deserving even of the name “art or style”. These amateurish, inept and worthless martial pastiches, usually thrown together by juvenile, egotistical wannabes or by pretentious, pompous buffoons, have no credibility and, thankfully, no longevity. After deceiving, cheating and damaging a number of unsuspecting students, schools and even some Accreditation Boards, they quietly disappear in the garbage heap of historical frauds and failures. I have already discussed this Martial Arts scourge at length in several of my other writings. Today, any new Art / Style worth preserving should be: 1) well established (structure and organization), 2) properly and legitimately accredited, 3) internationally respected in the Martial Arts community, and, 4) should possess a unique, comprehensive, effective, technical curriculum. And all of that should be well documented and open to examination – in other words, full transparency as opposed to “secret” techniques, unverifiable lineages and spurious histories. Martial Arts students deserve to know the truth about an art / style, so they can make informed, intelligent choices when making a serious investment of time, money and effort. Another thing to bear in mind is that we should not confuse the passing or turning over of a Martial Arts “School or Program” to a family member or a deserving Instructor with the transmission of an Art / Style. There is a great difference. The Master / Owner of a Taekwondo, Karate, Kung-Fu or Silat school may eventually select a qualified family member or a deserving senior student to carry on the running of the school when he / she becomes too old, unable to do so, or simply decides to retire. Turning over (or selling) a school is primarily a business decision, effecting only its own students and the local community, but with no significant consequences, historical importance or cultural impact for the Martial Arts community at large. The transmission of an established Art / Style to a chosen inheritor, is an event of a different magnitude, carrying not only practical implications but also lasting historical repercussions. Now that we have further isolated and defined our subject, let’s expand on what we discussed in my previous essay titled “Passing the Torch”. There are two additional situations that can make the transmission of an Art / Style more challenging and, potentially, even contentious:

â&#x20AC;˘ The Founder dies suddenly, without having officially designated an inheritor. â&#x20AC;˘ The Founder chooses not to name an inheritor before he dies because he cannot find anyone (family member or senior student) he believes to be qualified, capable, or worthy of receiving the inheritance of the Art / Style. The first situation is one that, sadly, we have witnessed several times. The sudden, tragic death of a Founder (as in the cases of Bruce Lee or Ed Parker) often leaves a vacuum not easily and quickly filled that may result in a kind of anarchy complicated by financial issues, ugly political in-fighting and power struggles. Family members of the Founder will be most likely legally entitled to inherit the physical assets and (even more important) the intellectual property associated with the Art / Style; but not necessarily its hierarchical leadership. Official martial art rank and title, conferring credibility, authority and respect, are an indispensable requirement for a successful claim of leadership of a Martial Art / Style and its governing body.

In some cases, senior students who have been with the Founder for many years (sometimes decades), have achieved the level of Master or Grandmaster and outrank the Founder’s family members, may have a legitimate claim of leadership and a better chance at preserving the style and its organization. With everyone working together for the greater good, an agreement can be reached, and a successful transmission can be accomplished. This will include clear lines of authority, legally binding financial arrangements, division of responsibilities and a unity of purpose between all parties. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, ego, greed and mistrust will, in some cases, corrode the relationships and lead to a bitter scenario of failure and collapse. However, there is a simple way to prevent some of the problems of this situation from happening. It is the same method used by millions of prudent individuals who want to orderly transfer their assets upon their deaths: a will and testament. No one likes to contemplate their departure from this world, but it is something that, to some extent, we all must prepare for. That’s why we buy Life Insurances, create Trusts and write Last Will & Testaments. We don’t want to leave our loved ones mired in chaos, legal problems, family feuds and difficulties. Therefore, I propose that Founders of an Art / Style should use the same approach and make their intentions and wishes for the transmission of the system clear (while still capable of doing so) by preparing the proper documents. Should they prefer, they even have the option, while alive and healthy, of keeping those documents (containing their decisions and instructions) “secret” or private until they are needed (as in the case of sudden death). Those documents may consist of just a simple notarized letter, an affidavit or a more comprehensive Last Will & Testament designating the chosen Soke-Dai and the procedures for the transmission of the Art, including the necessary financial arrangements. Of course, these documents can be periodically revised when circumstances change, or even voided and completely re-written as intervening events may dictate. This is the only sensible and smart way to prepare for a sudden fatal or incapacitating incident and avoid confusion, bitter conflicts, turmoil and possibly the irreparable loss of a valuable Martial Art / Style. The second situation mentioned above is, I believe, fairly uncommon but should be addressed nevertheless. That the Founder of a Martial Art, teaching and promulgating his / her creation for many years (possibly internationally) could not find one qualified, capable Soke-Dai within the family or amongst all the senior students, is difficult to comprehend, and raises many questions. It is hard to imagine a talented, charismatic, honest and wise Grandmaster not having developed a loyal following that would inevitably include some very skilled, competent Senior Instructors deserving to be considered as possible candidates for Soke-Dai. And, if that is actually the case, perhaps there may be deeper, more serious problems connected with the personality of the Founder, or with his Art and his organization.

To complicate matters even further, there is also another scenario that needs to be mentioned: The Founder must choose a Soke-Dai of the RIGHT AGE! Not too young and not too old. It would make no sense for an 80 years old Founder to pass the torch to a 75 years old who, in just a couple of years, would have to find his own Soke-Dai and initiate another transmission process. And the candidate cannot be too young because, although that individual could possess excellent technical skills, he / she would not have the necessary maturity, experience and wisdom to earn the respect and the acceptance of the most senior members. Appointing a 22 years old as your Inheritor of the Art (when you have students in their 50s and 60s) is a sure recipe for disaster. There are no specific age guidelines for an optimal transmission, but my recommendation would be for someone no younger than 40 and no older than 60. That should insure several decades of stable leadership, continuity and progress. When such individual is not available to a Founder, it falls in the same situation of the Founder not wanting or not being able to appoint a successor. The candidate of the right age simply does not exist.

So, assuming that for whatever reason (not the Founder’s fault) this unusual situation has somehow occurred and the right Soke-Dai cannot be found, I believe that the only pragmatic solution available would be to establish a Committee, a “Council” or a Board of the most senior and capable Instructors and, when the time comes, pass the torch to this appointed body. And frankly, hope for the best because, in practice, “Rule by Committee” is rarely successful, being fraught with competing interests, conflicting agendas, egos and ambitions, resulting, in most cases, in another kind of anarchy and the consequent splintering of the Style into several “new Styles” each claiming to be the most authentic, most “traditional”, most accurate version of the original Style, and each demanding legitimacy status over the other “inferior spin-offs”. This undesirable and unfortunate outcome, while not hard to predict, it is extremely difficult to prevent. With that said however, if smartly and efficiently organized (and most of its possible pitfalls identified, anticipated and dealt with) the Committee / Council / Executive Board formula CAN work, and if it is the only alternative available, it must be wisely structured, carefully implemented and given a chance. Incidentally, the formula just described can also be implemented in the first scenario we discussed, where the Founder dies suddenly without leaving any instructions in place for the transmission of the Art / Style to a chosen Soke-Dai. And in both cases, under ideal conditions, the Council / Board could eventually even decide to vote to elect one of their most senior members to be the officially recognized leader of the organization, becoming, in effect, the Soke-Dai and the de facto inheritor of the system. I have been asked several times by some of my peers, and even by some of my senior students, what provisions have I made to pass the torch of Combat Hapkido and if I have already selected a Soke-Dai to inherit my style. First of all, I should explain that my Martial Arts business “umbrella” is comprised of several distinct entities dealing with different areas of self-defense instruction. For instance, Police and Military each has its own training organization, and the same applies to my wife’s Women Self-Defense Program. I am also the Founder and Grandmaster of a Taekwondo Association (that is not an official, recognized Kwan, but an Independent governing body). All those separate business entities will not each require a Soke-Dai, but instead simply a Director and Chief Instructor. When the suitable individual to assume charge is found, the passing of the torch in those organizations will be basically a business transaction. In case something should happen to me before the process is completed, my wife Trina, who is my business partner and the inheritor of all my intellectual property, will be responsible for making all the necessary arrangements and completing the task. The only entity (also the largest and most well-known) that will require a transmission to a Soke-Dai is Combat Hapkido, the Style I founded in 1990. And although, as practitioners of a Korean Martial Art, we do NOT use the terms Soke or Soke-Dai, I will continue its use in the context of this general discussion about Art / Style transmission. Now, to go back to the question: Have I chosen a Soke-Dai to be the inheritor of my Style? And the answer is that it is a work still in progress with, fortunately, several options open to me. But, in the interest of full disclosure, I will share that several times over the years, I did tentatively identify certain individuals I believed to be capable to carry the torch. Invariably, in each instance, I ended up disappointed. Not that they were all “bad” people (although some turned out to be just that!), and most were excellent Martial Artists. Let’s just say that they were not the right fit and did not possess the necessary qualities and abilities. Or they simply just lacked the dedication and commitment indispensable to take on such an important responsibility. And I was also sad to discover that a few lacked the integrity of character to deserve such a great honor. So, as of today, I am still researching and analyzing all the available options and evaluating possible candidates. But of one thing you can be sure: although I will not use the title Soke-Dai for my successor, there will be a passing of the torch, there will be a transmission of my Kwan to an inheritor (or to a Board?); Combat Hapkido and its Organization will not die with me. I will not let that happen.

In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear. True real Close-Combat is a mainly offensive and non-defensive technique whose sole purpose is the final neutralization of the aggressor, always keeping in mind that he is never alone. In Close-Combat, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have too many techniques that would only serve to confuse us mentally; instead, we have what we call the "toolbox", with some key movements that will allow us to protect ourselves against practically any aggression. We teach our students to use any weapon or object as if they were using their own limbs, the most important being the use of their brain and body. In this DVD we will study in detail physical conditioning, falls, Chin Jab attacks, the "necktie", the "telephone", knee blows, the CloseCombat characteristic kick, the sweeps ... the attack techniques, defenses against kicks, triangulation, defenses against grabs and knife workout. Never forget that, contrary to what the aggressor believes, YOU are the HUNTER and he is the PREY. And to be a good hunter, we must learn to hunt correctly, performing many exercises often under stress, which will allow us to simulate a street fight. But let's not be fooled, only the street will teach the street.

Who are the future Gracie instructors? I hope that they are the same people who are already active as Gracie Instructors with us today! Some of them have been training with us since 1995, such as my longtime friends and students, Professor André Stock and Full Instructor Jan Köthe of the BJJ Dino Team in Magdeburg, or Full Instructor Thomas Mehnert, Head of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Team Berlin, as well as my two Greek representatives, Gracie Instructor Vasilis Spanidis and Gracie Trainer Nikos Spanidis. They are excellent

role models, which in my opinion, embody professionalism, commitment, and leadership. I can well imagine that many of the new instructor candidates already have a lot of experience in one or more martial arts, and even do or have try BJJ and/or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, although this is not necessary. Our teaching program is designed so that anyone, regardless of their existing knowledge, can learn and master authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, as well as Grandmaster Carlos and Hélio Gracie's master student Pedro Hemetério, who passed it on to me.

I am also honored today to tell you that Grandmaster Carley Gracie, who learned from his father Carlos Senior, uncle Hélio Gracie, and from Grandmaster Pedro Hemetério, because at that time Master Pedro was the assistant of Grandmaster Hélio in Rio de Janeiro. So today I can guarantee you one hundred percent that our teaching program comes from the direct source of the Grandmasters and is not some homemade system. You also benefit from our know-how, which is certainly unique in Europe, and no other BJJ organization in Europe can show as much as we can. But let it be said again: with us you will learn authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense and not MMA or sports BJJ!

Vacirca Brothers Creating a solid foundation - the way to the Blue belt! In the beginning you will attend the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gracie Fundamentalsâ&#x20AC;?, which contain 23 lessons. After you have attended these first 23 lessons, you will receive a stripe on your white belt. Our students who complete this rotation at least three times in a row and master the basic CGJJNE

techniques perfectly qualify for the White-blue belt. As a White-blue belt, you now begin the Intermediate program. Experience shows that the full Blue belt is achieved in about two to three years. If you train in a CGJJNE partner school where no Black belt is yet a regular instructor, the Blue belt coach (or Purple or Brown belt trainer) will have to wait for some time before he can graduate his first Blue belt candidates. But do not panic, your training to become a

Vacirca Brothers certified Gracie Instructor is progressive and will accompany your class teaching. While you are teaching, you are also learning and practicing! How many training seminars you have to attend depends, of course, on how much time you will also invest back home, because at each reunion I will personally review you and together we will define the next steps and your next training period with me.

Not easy, but possible for everyone! The first six months of a Gracie Jiu-Jitsuka are probably the most intense. Our Jiu-Jitsu is close to the body and practically from the first lesson on, it requires you to get involved with your training partners and start “measuring”.

This friendly “measuring up” takes place in a safe place, which also leaves room to try out techniques without pressure. Respectful interaction and collegiality are top priority and are a matter of course for every Jiu-Jitsuka. As a lone fighter you have no business here, because without a training partner you cannot practice! We do not have any katas or forms as you might know them from other martial arts, but we do have clearly defined practice drills. It should always, and in the first months even more so, be trained with a lot of care and attention. For a technique to be performed correctly, it is important to execute it in a controlled and slow manner. No Jiu-Jitsu beginner can avoid the experience that it does not work otherwise, no matter how strong and athletic you are.

Over time, you will achieve both a better body awareness and a better sense of how to react and adapt to your training partner. This is also linked to another learning process, namely the correct use of strength and endurance, so that you do not run out of breath after one minute. In the course of time you also learn to relax in your â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jiu-Jitsu gameâ&#x20AC;?. You develop your own strategy, which often resembles a chess master. Those who have already gained a good feeling for technique and tactics, go one step further and start to deceive their training partners with feints.

Vacirca Brothers We are not an MMA school, but “Striking” is part of it! Many people who come from a different martial art and come to us for the first time often want to know when the first punching and kicking techniques are trained. While authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has a strong focus on grappling techniques, it may well be that a training session will be without striking techniques, giving the impression that they will be ignored in our system. But this impression would be completely wrong! We train punching and kicking techniques from the very beginning, both the active execution and the defenses.

During the training you are invited as a White belt (with at least two stripes) to put theory into practice. It will not always work the same way, because there is still a lack of experience. But nobody demands that it works one hundred percent immediately. After the first trainings you go home with the feeling as if you had been run over by a bulldozer. Beginners with a big ego tend to go home frustrated! It does not matter if you have won or lost in “Randori” (Japanese for free practice). However, the experience gained during training will determine whether you continue the Gracie Way. So, the challenge is not least to have fun and enjoyment. Walking out of the training with your head

held high and being aware that you have learned something new - that is what it is all about! Even if it is only small movements, small steps that you have learned.

How water flows - The first step to the advanced... As a Blue-belt, you have now gained a solid foundation in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and gained important initial experience. Now it is important to understand when and how to apply the techniques to an opponent who has

We want to use combination exercises to deepen the basic techniques on the one hand, and on the other, to establish the connection to outwit an opponent who is equally strong or better. At this higher level it is required that you develop a certain finesse and play your own â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jiu-Jitsu gameâ&#x20AC;?. If new techniques are learned - which of course will be the case - the basic techniques must not simply be pushed into the background, but must continue to be integrated, practiced, and improved regularly.

The name Gracie is more than just a brand! The name Gracie has become an important brand not only in the martial arts scene today because it was made famous by the UFC and other MMA events. The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that we (Vacirca Brothers) brought to Europe in early 90s is something to be proud of and we will continue to work extremely hard to keep it that way in the years to come. Thanks to our CGJJNE partner schools, which help us to maintain this vision and serve as excellent references around the world, we will certainly be able to expand and train more excellent Gracie instructors and open additional partner schools.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.
