he most advanced countries on the planet have long since entered an unbearable spiral of legal inflation, to the point of having confirmed the old aphorism that goes: “the more laws, the less freedom.” It seems sensible that a constitution establishing the groundwork for coexistence, that is, a document that stipulates not only the intentions that lead to the establishment of a social order, but also its main lines of action, intentions and rules, be just as well the axis on which nations can assert their nature and sense of being. Rome, mother of all legal cultures in the West, did so and her legacy lives on to this day. The Age of Enlightenment and the great Napoleon took a few steps further, and finally the founding fathers of the United States, consolidated the idea of modernity, with the venerated North American constitution. The criminal, civil, and procedural codes are the natural derivatives of constitutions to shape their essence. «Vật Việt Nam» In Vietnamese Martial Arts circles in the West, for nearly fifty years, masters have claimed that the term Vật means "Vietnamese fighting". However, the word "Vật" does not apply only to Vietnam's traditional fighting art. In Vietnamese, "Vật" means "hand-to-hand fighting", however, all forms of fighting at close quarters are "Vật" (Olympic wrestling, wrestling, Senegalese wrestling, Canarian wrestling, etc.). If we want to specify Vietnamese wrestling, we must say "Vật Việt Nam", (whether for traditional Vật or popular Vật). This discipline is completely unknown to the Western public in general. However, it's a millennial art and that's not an empty word. Vietnamese hand-to-hand fighting is thousands of years old, unlike Vietnamese martial arts schools which, despite what some say, are very recent in the history of what is called Vietnam today. Most of them were created in the 20th century. But if the Vietnamese haven't been able to raise awareness of their traditional fighting system so far, it was because their

country has been the target of wars for more than thirty years. Vietnamese had other concerns than making their culture known. Those of them who were lucky enough to find a new life in the West after the war had to adapt to the host country and take care of their families and their new lives. It was very different for Japan and Korea, which benefited from a long period of peace, which gave them the opportunity to present their culture to the entire world. For four decades, I have tried to participate in the propagation of Vietnamese martial culture and, sometimes, I have also introduced the traditional Vật fighting in magazines. Now is the time to move on to a more precise and detailed description of this form of combat, but also of its various forms of evolution, which are the Vật of Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo, and the Vật of Integral Vovinam. This is the theme of this new DVD. The Vật of Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo is quite far from traditional Vật or popular Vật of Vietnam, because Vật is mostly a part of traditional Vietnamese folklore. Vật competitions are actually a facet of traditional Vietnamese festivals, such as harvest festivals, mid-spring festivals, etc. These were not competitions, but village or provincial festivals. Violence or effectiveness are not sought. Vật are two people who will try to make the opponent touch the ground with his back, or lift his feet off the ground. There are no keys, no guillotines, no submissions, no blows. It’s a noble art.

Initially, the founding Master of Vovinam, being a Vật fighter, wanted to complement it with effective and more suitable techniques for real combat. It should be remembered that in 1939, the year Vovinam was founded, his country was under French occupation. Therefore, unlike the traditional Vật and the popular Vật, the Vovinam Vật involves hits, locks and submissions. However, over time it became loose and lazy. This desire to make a more effective Vật by adding techniques from other Martial Arts was maintained after the death of the Founder, since the principle of “adding techniques from other Martial Arts, both Vietnamese and foreign”, is one of the 3 objectives of Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo, namely, “Ba mụch đích của Việt Võ Đạo”. To be more precise, it's the No. 2 objective, but there are already few teachers left at Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo who actually work on it. At Integral Vovinam (or Integral Fighting System) we are trying to resume the original project of the founding Master of Vovinam, and with this we want to return to Vật the importance it had in the origin of Vovinam. Therefore, a major overhaul is required, while giving this reform a serious makeover. In fact, we are only continuing the work of research and improvement of the Vovinam.

State of the Vật in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo Most of the Vật fighters in Vovinam do not perform any of the techniques of the official Việt Võ Đạo program in competitions. Why? The search for an answer to this question was the starting point for a comprehensive study of Vật. The conclusions of this study led to the modifications that were made in the Integral Vovinam. To better understand the fighting techniques of Vovinam, it's necessary to decipher the evolution that the Founder Master Nguyễn Lộc had given to the Vật in his Vovinam. Of course, the Vật of Vovinam is clearly different from the traditional Vật (Vật Cổ Truyền) or the popular Vật (Vật Dân Tộc) of Vietnam. One of the most basic differences is that, unlike the last two, Vovinam's Vật includes locks, ground fighting and submissions (in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo as well). Undoubtedly, it's one of the greatest changes that the Founder brought during the creation of the style in 1938. However, in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo (created, let us recall, in 1964 (four years after the death of the founding master) the Song Luyện del Vật (exercise by pairs) includes strikes (kicks, slaps, punches, knee strikes, elbows ...) which is no longer Vật at all: it's Vovinam. On the other hand, in Integral Vovinam, the Vật must remain Vật, although we have kept adding keys (as in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo) and groundwork (as in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo as well).

The Vật Cổ Truyền and Vật Dân Tộc still exist today in Vietnam, in traditional festivals. However, it's sad to note that in Vietnam's official Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo, as in the Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo of Tổ Đường (Master Nguyễn Văn Sen), Vật matches are no longer practiced. Only Master Trần Nguyên Đạo's Wester n federation of Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo offers Vật competition bouts. However, while this is very positive, again, we very rarely see the techniques of the official program in these fights: why? Part of the answer lies in the choice of the Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo “28 Vật techniques”. This choice was made among the hundreds of traditional or popular Vật techniques, but they were not the most suitable for the real fight: most likely, the most spectacular techniques were favored to the detriment of those most effective! In order to sort this out, in Integral Vovinam we Vật Cổ Truyền y Vật Dân Tộc, we restudy the Vật, to do, once again, the proper choice and introduce techniques selected among those offered by the various schools of Vật Cổ Truyền and Vật Dân Tộc, as well as other fighting styles, thus remaining faithful to the fundamental principle of Vovinam, including Objective N° 2: "The study of the essence of the techniques of other styles and their introduction in Vovinam". Therefore, we have almost quadrupled the number of Vật attack techniques in Vovinam Integral compared to Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.

Regarding the keys and the submissions on the floor (also added in the Vật de Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo), of course we have kept them in Vovinam Integral. On the other hand, we have taken the cultivation much further than in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo: We don’t practice ground fighting techniques, only in demonstration without studying them in depth. We work them out in a spirit of combat practice, study and efficiency for a real situation. On the other hand, the blows are reserved for the “Integral” fights, the somewhat “MMA” modality of the fights in Integral Vovinam. The Vật modality, for its part, remains without blows.

The Song Luyện of Vật In Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo, the Song Luyện of Vật were created exclusively for demonstrations. Over time, they were kept for grade exams in this form. However, none of these Song Luyện of Vật works out in the preparation for combat, nor in the practice of counterattack techniques that can be used in combat, nor even in the practice of movements that produce conditioned reflexes for combat. This is just a memory demonstration.

In Integral Vovinam, we want the Song Luyện of Vật to be an element of the real hand-to-hand fighting practice, but with a certain percentage of memory learning. Anyway, this is not a "recitation by heart" as with a Quyền, but a practice or an exercise that allows the application of techniques in combat. It's no longer a simple demonstration to be copied motion by motion. Several fundamental principles apply to this: -It works both sides in each technique. -The two partners work out on all the techniques presented (instead of one even, or one odd). -Use of realistic and combat-usable counterattacks (elimination of action-cinema-type counterattacks and stunts).

-Entrance into real guard (elimination of excessive circular slaps). -Practice cons, and counterattack cons, freely until escaping from submission or getting to apply submission, then return to guard and application of the following technique So there is a basic trunk that each pair can modify depending on the result of the counterattacks and counterattacks counters. At Integral Vovinam, our Song Luyện de Vật are therefore more dynamic and leave a lot of room for initiative, which is the essential foundation of wrestling and ground fighting.

The Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo has only 28 Vật techniques, some of which are not traditional Vật (N.1, N.6, N.11, ...), while others are not different techniques (N.7 and N.8). Vật techniques in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo do not represent the proportion they deserve, the Founding Master was a Vật fighter, let us remember. We have tried to remedy this by adding many traditional Vật techniques in Vovinam Integral. More than a hundred attack techniques (takedowns and projections) make up the general program of Vovinam Integral. To that we must add all the counterattacks for each knockdown and projection technique as well as the defenses once we hit the ground. These techniques are complemented with all the compression techniques, blocking the arms and legs, strangulation and suffocation, immobilization and controls, many of which are taken from Jiu-jitsu, as is already the case in Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo.

The end of the numbered Vậts Counting and memorizing each Vật technique number is easy from 1 to 10 ... it is much less easy until 28. But it would be really impossible until 130. Imagine being asked on the grade test: "Please do Vật number 58 ... then Vật number 94…, make me the counterattack of Vật number 112…” That's why, given the amount of techniques added to the Integral program, we have adopted a more traditional system: naming the techniques by their description. Judokas do it, why don't we? In traditional Vật or popular Vật, there are no numbers. Techniques have a name. Of course, given the complexity of the Vietnamese language, it is impossible to ask practitioners to memorize those names in Vietnamese. We present the names in French and English. Then each national technical director is responsible for the translation.

Vật coding in Integral Vovinam The classification, according to the different types of action, will be divided into 4 main topics: 1- Standing attacks, 2- Standing defenses and counterattacks, 3Ground techniques, 4Counterattacks and defenses for ground techniques. With this new DVD, the Vietnamese Vật is presented in a whole new way. Instead of simply filming the techniques of the official program, fixed and without real application, the Vật is shown in its traditional form detailing its main aspects (outfit, refereeing, ritual, techniques, counterattacks, tactics), then its technical evolutions, as well as the differences according to the Vietvodao Vovinam and the Integral Vovinam demonstrating why such evolutions occurred.

Kapap Victory through Failure In one of my interviews I was asked “Avi Nardia, who are you?” I answered to the host’s surprise “I’m a big failure… I’ve failed so many times that I lost the fear of losing which most people carry. Each failure brought me into a new place and a new adventure to study and improve. It reminded me of my days monitoring new recruits in top Special Forces training around the world and from so many, only a few were selected. Some didn’t even manage to get through the first stage, and I used to tell people that most took that failure so hard, carrying that feeling of inadequacy in a bad way. any people don’t understand that the purpose of life is to live... as simple as it sounds, no one who is a Navy seal or special forces is a success in life. Rambo is a fictitious character in a movie, but it’s really true that many carry emotional burdens and post-traumatic stress. To be a hero is not normal… being human is normal and so many pay with mental trauma and damage to family relationships by taking it to the extreme. Many people who didn’t go into Special Forces will be lawyers, writers, IT professionals and so on. Most will make way more money than if they had been in a Special Forces unit without having risked each day of their lives, undergoing constant physical and mental stress. Success is finding the right thing that you really wanted and pursuing it. I can agree with Robin Williams when he says that people don’t fake depression… they fake being okay.

Kapap There’s an important difference between theory and reality. In theory everyone likes to think they are winners, people tell stories of their past victories, while minimizing or omitting the failures. The reality is that we are all failures whether we admit it or not and with each failure comes a lesson. This is the reality. It reminds me of a funny story of a father teaching his son the difference between theory and reality. The man asks his wife if she would sleep with the neighbor if they were to offer her one million dollars. ‘For that amount, of course!’ she replied. He then asked her sister, and what about you, if you were offered one million dollars, would you sleep with the neighbor as well? ‘Yes, without a doubt!’ came the response. The father looked at his son and explained, in theory we have two million dollars… but the reality is that we have two whores in the house. Most people put up a façade, acting like everything is good in their life, but inside they’re afraid to fail. We want to see heroes, we need champions and society motivates people to be the biggest and the best and that’s why many always live in a state of constant competition, comparing themself to others while the true secret is to compare yourself to yourself yesterday and see how you progress from day to day. We see it in sports and martial arts as everyone gets to their first class and the first question is “how long will it take me to get my Black Belt?” From the first class, they are already looking for victory and that’s where they are lost, and we see many that don’t understand the real reason you join class is to study. Their first mistake is that they didn’t come to study, they came to earn a medal or try and prove their worth, many times because they are missing something deep inside, something that even becoming a champion and black belt will never solve because the issue is deep inside themselves.

When we study to fail and accept that failure, we study to win and how to deal with victory. There is a great quote again by Robin Williams - “Cocaine is God’s way of telling you, you’re making too much money.” Many times, when people win the lottery or get rich overnight, they never study how to deal with that and ultimately, it destroys their life. In martial arts, I’ve seen many great people who, after winning and becoming a champion, they turn into a different person, putting on a new mask that they may not like. In the words of Jean Jacques Machado "It’s great to train hard and become a champion, but it is greater to become a good human being." Those who have lived a full life and who have reached old age can look back on their lives and see their mistakes and smile. Some mistakes may have led to a new discovery or could have even been the source of fun and enjoyment. Certainly, most will look back and think better to have been sorry for what mistakes I have made than sorry I didn’t make those mistakes when I could... As we get older, we begin to see life in different ways and take our experiences as one long study of a well lived life.

We don’t take failure hard as in the example before of the Navy Seal recruit, we smile and say “wow, god loves me enough that I failed and still managed be successful in the corporate world!” We see that the same failure that we thought was a setback and bad, in reality took us to a new place, gave us new success and a new study. Pursuing martial arts is a life-long study and not just a study for competition. Not all people can be champions or Special Forces, but everyone can be his or her own family hero and success... many of us have been Special Forces or hero but failed when it came to the most important things in life. We fail, we study and when we get older and look back we see we collected so many failures that they become our greatest victory to win and manage to live life and stand up after each time we fall and that's the real measure of a champion. People come and go in your life, but the person in the mirror will always be there, so be good to yourself because if you’re friends with yourself, you will never be alone. Understand the Zen mindset and concepts for life and they will server as a tool in your martial arts journey.

a n d n o t on l y self-esteem. Selfesteem or loving the self, however, is essential but it cannot be based on what you do but on who you are. It is like the saying, “Hate the sin, not the sinner.” The child or student must know that they are loved because of who they are and not on what they do; and no matter how well or poorly they do, that they will always be loved. However, the message that because you love them, you want what is best for them and that you believe in them to achieve what they want out of life must be clearly transmitted to the child/student. They must clearly understand that all that you do for them is out of love and it is for their well-being, thus it must be so. If you are not doing for their best interest, then you are a poor parent and/or t e a c h e r. T h i s m u s t b e t h e foundation in all things, Love!

The most important task for the parent or teacher is to prepare their child or student to face the real world and prevail by giving them the proper knowledge, tools, and fortitude. Therefore, although it must start with self-esteem, what is critical is selfempowerment. Too many of us fail to provide the latter as that is a much more challenging, daunting task. I have outlined three essential elements of character that must be built within the individual to provide them with the proper foundation to acquire their full human potential to live a healthy, vibrant full life. There are of course many more characteristics such as integrity, honor, virtue, accountability etc. but these are what I feel are the foundation in which an individual may acquire their full potential. So, it might be more proper to say these are the foundations rather than characteristics.

• Potential – One must believe that they possess the power to achieve what they desire • Discipline – To have the ability to stick to the prescribed plans and promises made • Tenacity – The ability to overcome adversity and the fortitude to persevere to press on

Potential: This is the idea of striving to maximize one’s potential. Before they can strive for it, they must first know that they have potential. Too often people talk of reaching their potentials, but it has no real value as it used in redundancy and becomes a worthless rhetoric. In fact, all things have potential energy, even an inert inanimate object, a rock or a desk as when the atoms which make up the object are torn apart releases the force of nuclear energy. So, it is not that we possess potential as that is obvious, but the realization of the capacity and extent of our potential which is needed in order for an individual to achieve it. This is true in all things as I always proclaim that before anything can be achieved, one must first be able to see it. Therefore, what must be primary is self-awareness through deep introspection, reflection, meditation; in essence the ability to think, to utilize our greatest power and asset, the intellect, our consciousness. How to best become

Hwa Rang Do self-aware, enlightened can be addressed in future articles but for now we will focus on the human behaviors and characteristics that we can teach to mold and cultivate the leaders of tomorrow. In most cases, guiding to the realization of one’s potential is where we fail as parents, as teachers. The power of the force generated is directly determined by the amount of energy stored and the source of that energy. Like charging a battery, we must build up the potential energy within the person and when fully charged, they can be at their maximum. Yes, charging a battery is simple to understand, but how do we charge a person? Success is built upon many small successes. Therefore, the key is to create small enough tasks to ensure that they will complete it and succeed in their attempt. As they accomplish and fulfill each task, they will gain a greater sense of confidence and desire to take on bigger, more challenging endeavors, often much more than what they can handle. This is when the parent, teacher must heighten their observation with greater diligence. Emboldened with confidence and enthusiasm, as they take on bigger tasks of their own choosing, the teacher/parent must give them room to fail, to fall yet be ready to pick them up. Rather than protecting them from fear of failing or falling by preventing them to do what they want, you must create a safe environment in which they cannot get hurt too badly yet still attempt to fulfill their ambition. This is a natural, organic way of teaching them humility as learning empirically is the best way of learning. When they do fall, you must be there to give them guidance, corrections, and then encourage them to try again or modify the task until they succeed, then repeat each time increasing the level of difficulty.

Hwa Rang Do This is intrinsically built into the martial arts through the belt ranking system. With each success, each belt rank, they are building and increasing their potential energy. However, if they remain doing the same or similar tasks that they are familiar with and are confident in succeeding, then they will never grow to become stronger. This is a trap that we as individuals and as parents/teachers fall into constantly. In fact, this is what constitutes our society, specialization, and compartmentalization. It is our human nature to gravitate towards what we are good at as it makes us feel good, taking comfort in the satisfaction of some sense of achievement and recognition. Then of course the parent, they are relieved that their child has finally found something that they like and are good at and will continue to perpetuate them in that particular activity. However, in the early stages of one’s growth, we must challenge them and motivate them to try many different things, especially things that they are not comfortable or familiar with. Not only will this expand their perception of the world, instilling them with greater potential, but more importantly you are helping to overcome one of the greatest human fears, the fear of the unknown. By not burying themselves in comfort and digging a hole so deep that they can never escape, you have freed them from the bondage of fear, instilling them with hope, with possibilities and in essence that is what potential is, the belief in the possibilities, wonderment.

As parents that is our primary goal, providing comfort, safety, and happiness for our children and of course it must be so. However, the reality is that they will be without the parent most of their lives. Therefore, the goal must be to make the children independent and not dependent, ultimately, fulfilling the primary objective of providing the means of being happy by achieving their potential. Strength is developed through dealing with resistance and overcoming more complex problems to solve as well as their self-doubt and fear of failure, always testing their resilience. Through these types of engagements, the parent/teacher must always reaffirm that the child/student has the power to succeed and that there is no one else or any other external factors impeding their success except for their own deficits. The goal then is to identify their personal weaknesses or deficits and rectify them, thus, by changing themselves they change the outcome. “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength but with your testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it” 1 Corinthians 10:13 It is a constant effort to raise them up and then to cut them down. Even a blade of grass left unattended grown ten feet tall will be hard to cut down. You must water and feed the grass in order for it to be healthy, but you must tend

Hwa Rang Do to it, so it does not grow stubbornly unruly. Ultimately, it is to teach humility, remembering that humility is not being subservient or submissive out of weakness, but out of choice. To say that they can do anything they want in life is a falsity. It is comforting and feels good, but it is a lie. No one can do or be anything that they want to be. It is like taking a person to a shopping mall and saying to them, “You can get whatever you want!” So then, the person grabs all the things that he/she ever desired and tries to leave the store, only to be stopped by the security guard and forced to the checkout counter. The cashier totals up everything and tells the person how much they need to pay, which is met with, “Huh, I was told that I can get whatever I want.” The cashier responds, “Sorry, nothing is for free.” Yes, this seems obvious, but in fact it is too common as people only remember and do what they want, neglecting what they should do. What should have been said is, “You can buy whatever you want depending on how much you can afford.” “You can do whatever you want depending on how much you’re willing to work and sacrifice for it.” That is the proper statement. However, most of us fixate on the first part and negate the more important second part. If done correctly, with each small successes, accomplishments, completed tasks the desire to want greater things, greater challenges will organically arise. Mostly, when we tell people, children that they can do or be anything they want is to pacify and comfort them. The harder task is to show them how to be at their best so that they can accomplish their goals. Before you take them to the store and say that they can get whatever they desire, you first teach them how to be wealthy, that’s the building up of potential. In this second instructional work, Chief George E. Lepine, Chief Instructor of Okichitaw Indigenous Combat Arts, introduces us to one of the most prized weapons among warriors, the "Chikuna-Kinas," or Fighting Tomahawk, an instrument that history has placed in our minds as aggressive and ruthless. In the possession of a skilled Indian warrior, the Tomahawk was considered a very convincing weapon in any close combat. In most combative actions, the application of a simple swing and strike with a Tomahawk against an adversary is anything but a simple task to complete without utilizing the guerrilla application of surprise. In Okichitaw, there are several practices and applications of the use of the Tomahawk in battle, not only from an offensive application, but also from a defensive perspective. In this video Chief Lepine explains in detail the basic working concepts with the Tomahawk, training, throwing, the 20 movements, combined handling with knife, defense and attack applications, and counter techniques against attacks with Tomahawk or other weapons. With this work, Okichitaw continues to honour indigenous traditions by training in the use of the fighting Tomahawk which ensures that not only this knowledge remains, but that we continue to move in the same way that our ancestors once did.

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

In the last 20 years, MMA (Mixed martial arts) has developed in a way that it is now the fastest growing sport in the world. It is the third most watched sport in the United States and its fast development and growth is also being gained in Asia and Europe. Mostly thanks to the excellently organized competitions which are grossly followed by the media and its following production, some of the most successful fighters- competitors have become superstars. They attract attention on a daily basis and leave a strong impression on each individual. This martial arts format in which the most efficient martial arts techniques are being used has shown to be very interesting for its spectators and it is expected that further growth of the MMA sport will come in the years that follow. Of course, such a big and speedy development of a martial arts sport comes with some negative consequences and one of them is the development of various myths connected to the MMA sport. Some of those most widespread myths are: the MMA sport is dangerous; MMA isn't for everyone; MMA needs to be banned; MMA is just a current hype; MMA as a mode of competition is a newly formed and young type of competition in martial arts (the latter being one of the most frequent myths).

et's start by addressing this last myth and a wrong opinion which prevails among people- MMA sport is a new style of competition and its short history is only approx. 30 years old. Such a viewpoint is completely wrong and it is usually derived from a lack of knowledge of

Mixed Martial Arts some basic facts from the history of martial arts development across the world. Martial arts have been around for thousands of years. Today's MMA sport is just another step in the evolution of martial arts which has its long developmental history as well as MMA as a style of competition. The developmental path of MMA is just a natural continuation of the basic human need to practice martial arts in order to protect oneself as the individual and his/her relatives. In its core,

MMA is a synergy of the best techniques from all martial arts made into a personalized system of self-defense or competition. In order to understand the developmental path of today's MMA sport, we need to go back to ancient history and to the time when certain martial arts styles were developed and whose roots can be found in the elementary modes of fighting across the world. They were developed independently from one another. In any

way, all martial arts styles and, consequently, martial arts history in general have brought us to what we today call MMA.

The historical path of MMA Today, it is considered that the most elementary forms of fighting developed by natives in almost all parts of the world. This kind of hypothesis has largely been confirmed by archaeological research in those areas. Drawings, reliefs, engravings, statues, terracotta, decorative vases and forged money showing various martial arts can be found almost everywhere in the world. Some of the oldest sources that show these martial arts techniques are today used in MMA sport, and were found in Ancient Egypt, Crete, Mycenae, the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece, Ancient Japan, India as well as in the drawings of old Inkas, the Chinese, the Koreans and many other nations across the globe. One of the oldest visualizations of sports themes and martial arts motifs was found in Egypt near the city of Tienen. A drawing of a group of Nubians carrying a panel that shows 2 wrestlers was found in a tomb and is dated to 1450 B.C. This drawing depicts the basics of the wrestling technique. Also, according to a drawing found on the walls of a tomb of a pharaoh in Beni Hasan which is around 4000 years old, we can conclude that wrestling was widespread among Egyptians at that time. Many wrestling techniques can be spotted on a well-known relief where the fighters are painted in red and black. These techniques are also used in today's MMA sport. It is interesting to mention that many ancient wrestlers' techniques remind us of certain throwing and choking techniques in today's judo (throwing over one's shoulder, i.e. ippon-seoinage, certain levers, holding on the floor, i.e. yoko-shiho-gatame or even choking, i.e. hadaka-jime etc.). The Ancient Assyrians, Babylonians and Etruscans also viewed wrestling as a warrior-martial art and were acquainted with many wrestling positions which make up the basics of MMA sports today. Some

Mixed Martial Arts 3000 years ago in China, wrestling competitions were held and both children and adults took part in "wrestling day”. At the time, Chinese wrestling schools were well known for their various wrestling techniques and grips and most of them are still used today in MMA. Wrestling was also very popular among the Ancient Greek which is visible in numerous legends and written artefacts. According to an old legend, the gods themselves taught Hercules and Theseus how to use wrestling techniques. Also, the poet Homer described wrestling fights in his popular piece The Iliad and the Odyssey. It is interesting to note that, in Homer's description of a fight between Odysseus and Ajax the Great, a technique which is almost identical in structure and form as an Egyptian technique performed with a punch, i.e. grip in the bend of the knee, appears. The same technique is often performed today in MMA, usually used when knocking the opponent down on the floor. It makes up the basis of the wrestling and judo technique (ashi guruma). Ancient Greek punching had fewer rules in comparison to today's boxing. The fighters fought without any rounds for

as long as one of them wouldn't be knocked out or admitted his defeat. The rules allowed you to hit the opponent even if he was lying on the floor which is the same in today's MMA sport. Weight categories also didn't exist, but only 2 age groups – men and young men. The proof of how brutal these fights used to be can be found in the writings of one of the chroniclers of the time who wrote about a fighter called Stratophon – "When Odysseus returned home, the only one who recognized him was his dog Argus. However, you, Stratophon, after 4 hours of punching couldn't be recognized by any dog, fellow citizen, not even yourself.” Wrestling existed as an individual category as a part of pentathlon. Old chronicles of the time write as follows – "There isn't a greater spectacle in whole of Olymp.” It is obvious that martial arts sports as well as the thrill they offer in their fights were very interesting to the public at the time, as well as in today's MMA sport. Those old Olympic Games introduced fist fighting in 688 B.C., wrestling and pentathlon entered in 708 B.C., while pankration appeared in 748 B.C. As a sport, pankration was a very brutal combination of fist and leg fighting/kicks and wrestling. Translated from

the Greek language, pankration means "all the power”- "pan” means "all, everything” and "kratos” means "power and force”. In its very beginning, pankration was know as "pammachon” which, in free translation, means "free fighting”. Terms that are almost identical to the name pammachon can be found in later instances for some forms of martial arts competitions such as catch–as-catch-can, vale tudo (in Portuguese – anything goes), free-fight or, the one that is most known in today's MMA, ultimate-fight. Many today's MMA trainers as well as some martial arts experts like to say that pankration is the forerunner of today's MMA sports. Such a claim is only partially true because we now know that similar competitions were held in China, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Africa, India and other countries around the world. The rules of pankration only prohibited a fighter to bite his opponent, deliberately dig out his eyes and tear off his nose and mouth with his nails. However, all other techniques were allowed. Many experts who consider such inhumane techniques to be present only in pankration are wrong because the same techniques were seen in China, Korea, India, Mongolia, Japan, Africa etc. As a competitive sport, pankration was a combination of boxing and wrestling techniques, but what made it special were elements such as leg kicks. We can say that pankration was somewhat similar to today's ultimate fighting, i.e. MMA sports. Fights would often end by kicking the opponent on the ground, choking, using a lever or by pressing him hard against the ground. What is especially interesting is a certain assumption that fighters from that era could easily, i.e. in a matter of months, adapt to

Mixed Martial Arts today's MMA sport competitions. Unlike them, today's MMA competitors should have a much longer adjustment to their style of fighting in case they would even dare to fight according to their rules (punching in the eyes and neck, gripping one's genitalia, etc.). Interestingly enough, among all the sports that were held during the ancient Greek Olympic Games, pankration is the only one that hasn't entered modern Olympic Games. Unlike this discipline, today's MMA sport has a great chance to achieve that status as many today's Olympic martial arts winners joined MMA competitions. Other martial arts styles were derived from the ancient Greek pankration. For example, an ancient Etruscan style of wrestling or the Roman pankration introduced somewhat different techniques and more humane fighting rules. Thanks to the strengthening of the Roman Empire, many Greek "trainers” arrived to Rome in order to train their patricians and prepare them for wrestling competitions. At the beginning of the formation of gladiatorial games which became more and more popular, wrestling, boxing and pankration competitions were held less frequently. Across the whole Roman Empire, various martial arts competitions between skilled individuals that fought in their specific style were a daily occurence, for example, in the military, among patricians, gladiators, etc. Today's martial arts experts agree that many martial arts practitioners around the world wanted to test the efficiency of their martial arts skills by fighting each other. As an example, tournaments that tested one's martial arts strength and skill that were held in ancient Japan were called chikara–kurabe. According to a Japanese chronicle Nihon Shoki from 720, a fight that was held on Emperor Suinin's court in 230 B.C. between bare-handed fighters was described. According to the writing, the fight was held between Nomino Sokuna and Taima-no Kahae. Sokuna won by kicking Kahae to the ground and punching him with his hands and legs, one of which was deadly. On the basis on those fighting techniques, the yawara skill was later formed and it was the forerunner of ju-jitsu. If we go even further, it is known that some of the ju-jitsu techniques are the basis of today's MMA sports. According to some legends, similar bare-handed fights were held in Burma, Java, in some parts of India and, later during the rule of Genghis Khan, in Mongolia. After the disintegration of the Mongolian Empire, numerous martial arts flourished in China, among which were many styles of kung fu. Kung fu masters were the ones who strived to try out, compare and test their fighting techniques the most. There were 3 popular methods of testing the efficiency of the skill among experts-masters of various martial arts styles. The first method doesn't include contact with the opponent or his injury. The demonstration of the technique is made with words and light hand gestures while the techniques are described to the smallest details. Of course, this is done under the assumption that both practitioners are well-acquainted with martial arts skills. In the East, such a way of comparing 2 different styles is called "dok-sau“. The second method is a light performance of the technique with using some protective equipment or by showing just

one part of a certain technique, usually done with one hand, which is called dahn chi sao. The third method is as old as the fighting technique. Its name is "kong sau“ meaning hand conversation, although we can freely translate it as "free fight”. Kong sau is a realistic fighting mode without any protective equipment or boundaries. The winner is the fighter who remains standing on his feet. Many famous Chinese boxing masters (kung fu masters) were challenged in this way so they could prove their martial arts knowledge. Because of a high number of injured or dead fighters, such a mode of fighting, i.e. testing and comparing knowledge was often prohibited. However, this method of comparing knowledge and skills was preserved in many Chinese provinces until the end of World War 2. From today's point of view, such a style of fighting was inhumane, but, it also hindered the emergence of numerous self-proclaimed instructors that spread their lack of knowledge at the time. Unfortunately, this is a phenomenon which is widespread today. This last testing method is not unknown among martial arts masters around the world. Some of the most popular martial arts masters were supporters of such a mode of testing one's knowledge as well as the efficacy of certain martial arts styles. Among many, we can mention the following masters that fall within this category: Jigoro Kano, Bruce Lee, Matsutatsu Oyama, Hirokazu Kanazawa, Shigeru Egami, Gogen Yamaguchi, Ivan Gene LeBell, Helio Gracie, Ed Parker, Muhammad Ali, and many more. If we were to introduce this mode of testing today, i.e. a way to realistically check one's martial arts skills, we can assume that more than a third of today's martial arts "masters” as well as various "champions” would be proclaimed as unprofessional, weak, inefficient and- fake. Nonetheless, we are now living in newer and more humane times where we need to consider sports and sports rules. Different competitions and their diversity according to style are a place where anyone can find a discipline for himself and show off his skills and abilities. Unfortunately, among the vast majority of such practitioners-sportsmen as well as among certain martial arts "masters”, their knowledge, abilities and skills would prove to be insufficient and lacking in realistic free fighting. This is why many fighters want to test their skills in more realistic conditions, i.e. in a type of realistic fight and this is where MMA sport offers them such a place, no matter what its constraints, i.e. current rules are.

Newer History Up until the 15th century, there are is no data existing in Europe about the special interest in fighting without weapons. This is when we come across first data in books about fencing. They talk about fights without weapons that were done during fencing duels when one of the fighters would lose their sword. Joachim Camerarius (1500 - 1574) and Paul Hector Mair described and showed in drawings different fighting positions without weapons, but also ways in which to bend one's arm, punch with the knee, d efend themselves by moving, etc. It is interesting that in 16th

century Europe some ju-jitsu techniques were used. Proof of this can be found in Hans Sauchs' verses which, in free translation, are as follows: "Break the leg, break the fingers, break the bones, give a deadly punch, you might even stab in the eye.” Some techniques shown in those drawings are also used by MMA fighters. Up until the 18th century, fights between wrestlers and boxers were held, but they couldn't compete with sword fights in terms of beauty and attractiveness. Today's form of boxing appeared in England as late as the 18th century and the 2 people responsible for its formation are Jack Broughton and Chamberlain. Since then, boxing began to spread and develop as a sport at a high pace and soon became one of the most popular sports overall. In many parts of the world, fights without the use of gloves (bareknuckle boxing) were also held and some techniques

which are prohibited, vile and inhumane in today's sports were allowed back then. For example, punching or holding the opponent's neck or nape, punching him in the eyes, some wrestling grips, even kicks on the ground. Some of these techniques are used in today's MMA sport. At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, authentic Okinawa (called Te) martial arts started to mix with Chinese influences. This is when the Japanese skill called Kempo to de (pronounced "to te”) appeared. Freely translated, its name means "the rule of the fist”. At that time, there is a greater opposition between various influences and martial arts styles as well as free fight competitions (usually in the south of China and on Okinawa). Although free fights were held during the 18th century between fighters of different martial arts styles, such competitions flourished during the 19th century.

Mixed Martial Arts During the beginning and mid-19th century, different freestyle fights were held around the world where wrestlers, boxers, kung fu masters and even other martial arts style masters competed in. We can single out free fight competitions between English (sometimes even French) sailors who practiced wrestling, boxing or French boxing- savate and Japanese sumo fighters. A famous painting from 1861 which serves as a memory on one such fight exists. Although there were many examples of free fight competitions where fighters tested their styles against other fighters, one event was especially interesting. One of the more important events in the history of free fighting happened in 1887 when a famous boxer and the champion of that time, John. L. Sullivan, challenged a fight against the champion of the Greek-Roman style, William Muldoon. According to the chronicles of the time, Muldoon

apparently lifted Sullivan up and threw him on the floor where he then held him, just a few minutes into the fight. It is interesting to note that, in many free fight encounters, wrestlers had an advantage in comparison to boxers. This style of fighting can also be seen today in MMA. Interesting free fight competitions appeared in England at the end of the 19th and the beginning of 20th century and were organized by Bartitsu (from 1898 to 1903). Namely, the instructors from the bartitsu club accepted various free fight invitations in London and its surrounding cities where they, mostly with ease, beat their opponents. During these events, they would fight against various martial arts styles of combat: wrestlers, boxers, French boxing-savate masters, as well as judo and ju-jitsu masters. If we were to single out one person that is creditable for the formation of MMA sports, it would definitely need to be William Barton-Wright (bartitsu) as one of the forerunners of this style of fighting. The later development of MMA sport is definitely marked by competitions in vale tudo which were organized at the beginning of the 20th century in Brazil. Its basis was ju-jitsu and its great merit goes to the Gracie family (especially Helio Gracie). On the other end of the world, in Japan, free fight competitions were held sporadically since 1970. Among many competitions that were held, one event should me mentioned. A fight between Antonio Inoki and a famous boxer Muhammad Ali was held on June 25, 1976. Although the rules of the sport greatly helped Ali to win Inoki, the fight itself attracted a lot of interest for this type of competition. Modern MMA sport started with a sports event that was held on November 12, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver under the name of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Among the organizers of the event, we should mention Art Davie, Robert Meyrowitz and Rorion Gracie. The competitions were held between 8 different martial arts fighters: Royce Gracie, Zane Frazier, Ken

Mixed Martial Arts Shamrock, Telia Tuli, Gerard Gordeau, Kevin Rosier, Patrick Smith and Art Jimmerson. As many as 86,592 spectators witnessed Royce Gracie's domination via pay per view. Although the event had a large viewership, the organization of all subsequent competitions didn't run so smoothly. The founders of the UFC competition, especially Rorion Gracie, believed that UFC competitions should be held with less rules in order for the fights to be more realistic. However, when senator John McCain saw those fights he didn't like them and he did everything he could in order to forbid this type of competitions. This is why MMA sport became banned in New York and most of the USA in 1997, as well as in some European countries such as France. The ban lasted for quite some time in some countries, e.g. in West Virginia until 2011, in Wyoming and Vermont until 2012, in Connecticut until 2013. The assembly of the state of New York voted against the 1997 MMA ban in 2016 and thus became the last state in the US to legalize MMA sport back again. The legalization was greatly due to the change of fighting rules (let's just say that the rules became more humane). Certain changes to the MMA sport happened when the UFC was bought in 2001 by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta as well as when they formed their parent company Zuffa and elected Dan White as their president. Thanks to their acquaintances and impact in the state of Nevada, they managed to legalize MMA sport which was paramount for its further development. Gradually, many other MMA sport organizations were founded across the world and we can name just a few of them: Bellator, Pride, Affliction, Strikeforce, WEC, MMA, IFC, Rizling, Elite XC (not active anymore), etc. Among many excellent competitors and trainers, the credit for the popularity of the MMA sport especially goes to Gene LeBell, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar, Royce Gracie (and the Gracie family), Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, Matt Hughes and, among women, Gina Carano. GROUND FIGHTING An obvious venue of hand-to-hand combat is the ground. Training for this possibility has been largely ignored despite the knowledge that many situations will ultimately go to the ground. The popularity of "tough man contests" and the success of grapplers in such events produced a hunger within the defensive tactics community for tactical ground fighting, with Brazilian jiu-jitsu being the most prevalent. This long, overdue aspect of defensive tactics fortunately has been enthusiastically accepted among police trainers and agencies.

That's right, each of them took one guy to the ground, leaving the two of us with ... well you can do the math."

Besides being just a little angry and requiring hospitalization, Paul's real-life experience helps illustrate the limitations of relying on anyone fight-survival discipline. Too many negative factors are present in the real world of policing to advocate a preference for the ground. Environmental conditions and tactical considerations, such as ground surface (for sure it will not be a mat), fight location, number of suspects, unpredictability of the landing, cumbersome burden of duty gear, and the difficulty in protecting your weapon, are just a few. In addition, physical affects (exhaustion/injury) and unrealistic applications (on the street you at some point have to relinquish a joint lock) are just a few reasons for not going to the ground. And if grounded, the primary objective is simple - to get up. In a stand-up fighting position, an officer has a better opportunity to employ a firearm, zoning tactics, impact weapons, chemical agents, and his most effective personal weapons - headbutts, knees, and elbows. Unless it's a sporting event (and police-suspect altercations are not), there are just far too many extenuating factors to prefer this forum. Going to the ground jeopardizes yourself, your partner, or your family in some circumstances. Many fights go to the ground; exposing officers to grappling techniques is an extremely important component in any defensive tactics program.

Paul Vunak KNIFE FIGHTING Another area full of inaccurate and tactically challenged teachings involves the arts of knife fighting and stick fighting. Today, there are an increased number of police officers carrying knives both on and off duty. Although edged weapon training is more readily available today, many officers who carry these weapons are virtually unskilled in its technical and tactical applications. The (false) confidence officers glean from possessing a knife can, in fact, be detrimental in real-life situations. Cutting angles, range considerations, primary target acquisition, distance issues, and (unrealistic) blocking methods constitute some of the required basic tactical knowledge. Jeet Kune Do addresses these concerns with simple, but realistic techniques and a practical training methodology, which stresses the obvious (but not often taught) preferred strategy of distance - to run or get an equalizer if you must fight. Other lessons focus on objectives at long range (defanging the snake), close range (cut-thenblock) and the everavailability of headbutts, knees, and elbows. An excellent police training exercise is the “First to The Knife” drill. A knife is thrown near two officers who are participating in a sparring forum. At its (knife) presentation, the officers’ race to secure it. The officer who realizes he cannot win then turns and runs to gain distance while formulating a countermeasure. The class applauds the action, because it reinforces the tactical necessity of distance and validates a person's decision not to fight when unarmed. This encouragement is not only needed to help change a cultural (police) conditioning, but also serves to reinforce an important tactical consideration - the 21- foot reactionary gap between an officer and a knife-wielding suspect.

For some officers this defense consists of just hanging on and praying that back-up quickly arrives quickly.

KINA MUTAY Kina Mutay, the art of biting and eye gouging, is not only a devastating tactic, but also speaks to the psychology of fighting, as illustrated in the infamous Evander HolyfieldMike Tyson heavyweight championship fight. Holyfield, despite taking a barrage of punches from arguably the world's hardest hitter, continued his relentless pursuit of Tyson around the ring. Then came the bite. Holyfield immediately quit fighting, placed his hands to his injured ear, and began screaming and jumping around the ring. To many sports fans it was a cheap shot, but in the realm of street fighting, consider its effects. The biting technique not only caused Holyfield to stop fighting, but also psychologically took him out of his element (boxing). He went from aggressor to victim - just like that!

Paul Vunak CONCLUSION It should come as no surprise that law enforcement can benefit from the concepts and philosophies of Jeet Kune Do. Bruce Lee's attention and focus on what works and what doesn't in real-life streetlights are exactly what contemporary police trainers are now advocating. That is the concept of reality-based defensive tactics. Jeet Kune Do's attention to attributes, functionality, simplicity, reliability, and retainable fighting methods parallel the goals of current police tactical ideology. The demands of their job force police into violent situations where their training, or lack thereof, can mean the difference between life and death. Police are called upon to intervene in dangerous and unpredictable situations. They must confront the suspect's intent on resisting, assaulting, or killing the officer. Defensive tactics designed to quell minimal resistance is often times sufficient, but past lessons of violence and tragedy have demonstrated a need for more comprehensive and realistic-type techniques. Preparing officers to respond physically and psychologically to dangerous hand-to-hand encounters will greatly increase their chances of survival.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. Muay Thai Exclusive interview with Muay Thai Grand Master Chaisawat Tienviboon Grand Master Chaisawat Tienviboon has spent almost 60 years studying the principles of Muay Thai back to the roots of the Art. He started to teach Muay in 1968 at Chulalongkorn University. In the course of his research about ancient Muay, he found that over the centuries some important techniques and fighting principles had been forgotten and disappeared from modern practice. Therefore, he tried to restore those missing parts, bringing Muay Thai techniques back to their original efficiency. He also combined, as it was the ancient custom, bare handed fighting with the use of weapons, blending both skills into a modern-traditional style. At present he is Head of Curriculum Design Working Group of the Muay Thai Strategy Subcommittee appointed by the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sport. In this exclusive interview for Budo International, Arjarn Chaisawat talks about the years of his apprenticeship, the origins of his style and reveals a lot of fascinating details about some of the greatest masters of Muay, for the first time.

Marco de Cesaris: Arjarn Chaisawat, could you tell us about the years you spent studying Muay? How did you begin? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: In 1962 I was attending high school in Chiang Mai, 100 km away from my hometown Lampang. At the school’s gym I saw some of my classmates punching and kicking the hanging bag. I liked that very much, it seemed so beautiful to me. Then I tried to kick and punch the heavy bag, too. But the result was very bad. Actually, we all tried to do some Muay copying from other fellow students; there was no formal teaching at all. During school holidays I went back home to Lampang. I told a close friend of mine, Tawee, that I wanted to learn Muay Thai because I knew that Tawee’s father, Khru Roj, was a famous Muay Thai teacher. Therefore, Tawee brought me to ask his father to accept me as one of his students. That year I started to learn Muay from Khu Roj. Every school holiday I went to learn Muay with him. It took me six years to reach a good level. Marco de Cesaris: I know you studied under some legendary Masters of Muay. Can you tell us about Master Taweesit’s (1890-1961) style of Muay? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: Arjarn Soontorn (Kimseng) Taweesit was the founder of Muay Taweesit. Muay Taweesit was a Modern-Traditional style of Muay at the beginning of 20th century. In fact, the core of Arjarn Taweesit’s style was a combination of traditional Muay he learnt from his master, Khru Khiao (green in Thai language), and western Boxing’s principles and techniques that he learnt from a boxing coach named Mr. Baker. At that time, Muay Thai Boran didn’t include straight punching (Jab and Cross) typical of western Boxing. In fact, traditional Muay came from Thai fencing and punching techniques in particular came from Dap (the typical short Thai sword) maneuvers. Therefore, punches were mainly swings. Moreover, in Muay Taweesit syllabus some throwing and joint breaking techniques taken from Ju Jitsu were also included. I didn’t have a chance to learn directly from Arjarn Soontorn Taweesit, but I am his third generation student. In fact, Arjarn Soontorn is Arjan Sutin’s teacher. Arjarn Sutin is Arjarn Roj’s teacher and Arjarn (Khru) Roj is my teacher. I am in Arjarn Taweesit lineage.

Marco de Cesaris: And what about your teacher, Arjarn Roj Chaijak? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: Roj Chaijak or Khru Roj was one of the best Muay Thai boxers of his time. He had many students: among them was one the first Champion of Thailand at that time. One of his student was also Arjarn Chaisawat Tienviboon. I remember that Khru Roj was very strict in teaching. He allowed no deviation from the standard. If one of his student couldn’t perform the technique he taught one day in class, the next day that same student wasn’t allowed to progress to a more advanced technique. This went on until the student wasn’t perfectly proficient at performing that maneuver. Therefore, it took Arjarn Chaisawat six years to learn Look Mai techniques.

Marco de Cesaris: You studied also the style of renowned Master Ketr Sriyapai (1902-1978): can you tell us about him? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: Khru Ketr Sriyapai is widely recognised as the great master of Muay Chaiya, the style of Muay of Southern Thailand. However, Khru Ketr belonged to two lineages of Muay. One lineage was the style of his family which he called Muay Chaiya or Muay Choa Chaiya. His Muay Chaiya teacher was his father, Provincial Ruler of Chaiya. The other lineage which Khru Ketr belonged to was Muay Taweesit. In fact, Khru Ketr Sriyapai was Khru Soontorn Taweesit’s student and he was also good friend of Khru Sutin (Khru Sutin is Khru Roj’s teacher and therefore is my teacher’s teacher). Therefore, Khru Ketr and myself belong to the same Muay Taweesit lineage. My personal acquaintance with Khru Ketr started when I read an article he wrote for a Muay Thai Magazine in which he talked about an event which occurred in King Rama VI period (1909-1924). At that time the Thai Government provided monetary funds for the Boy Scouts. In order to get the money for the Boy Scouts, the Government asked each city to send its best boxers to fight in Bangkok. In those fights, most of Thailand’s best fighters lost to Muay Taweesit students. When I read that article I decided to write a letter to Khru Ketr and asked the permission to learn Muay Taweesit from him. Khru Ketr accepted and came to Chulalongkorn University to teach me and my students Muay Taweesit. Therefore, Khru Ketr taught me Muay Taweesit style and afterwards he also taught me his Muay Chaiya. Marco de Cesaris: We can say that you are the link between the old generations and the modern practitioners. In your opinion, what are the differences between the two? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: Old generation of Muay Boran practitioners learnt the Art for real fighting. Muay Boran fighting was “all-out combat”. There was no rule. In learning Muay Boran a modern student must try to learn every detail of each technique he is taught and must try to study all aspects of each maneuver in depth. In fact, he needs to trace back the original roots of all Mai Muay he practices, all the time.

Muay Thai Modern Muay Thai boxing practitioners learn Muay for the sport. They train because they want to build their sport career. In order to perform well in the ring and build a successful professional career (especially in Thailand) they have to display beautiful techniques when they fight. At the same time they don’t aim at seriously hurting their opponents. Marco de Cesaris: You often say that “if you compare Muay Thai principles with a picture, the picture you have received was partially damaged”. Can you explain this statement? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: All human beings have the same physical structure with two arms and two legs, from the beginning of time. Ancient people, all over the world, developed the fighting techniques that we still practice today. However, some principles and techniques were not properly transferred from generation to generation and were lost in time. Moreover, some masters who developed fighting skills along the centuries decided to keep those skills secret and never showed them publicly. This is what I believe. Therefore, I always compare the skills I have learned to a picture that was partially damaged. Along the years, I tried to bring the Siamese fighting skills to their original completeness to the best of my ability. Marco de Cesaris: Your style is considered a moderntraditional style. What does this mean? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: The core of a modern traditional style of Muay is traditional Muay Thai or Muay Boran. This strong base is combined with the best technical elements of any martial art style from all over the world. This elements are useful to overcome the weak points of traditional thai fighting arts. The result will improve Muay for future generations. Therefore, in Muay Chaisawat some principles and techniques from Japanese Aikido are included in the standard syllabus. Marco de Cesaris: What are the main technical features of Muay Chaisawat? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: The main technical features of my style are the following 3 fighting principles: Escape, counter attack, follow up.

Great Masters “Escape or Lop Lik is the main defensive strategy of all styles of Muay. If you employ this strategy, you can dodge the attack and keep a safe position, out of range of the opponent’s body weapons.”

Muay Thai Escape or Lop Lik is the main defensive strategy of all styles of Muay. If you employ this strategy, you can dodge the attack and keep a safe position, out of range of the opponent’s body weapons. Otherwise, you can escape inside the attack. This means that you are in the range of the opponent’s body weapons. In this situation you must be aware of the attacker’s second stroke and you need to counter attack quickly. Counterattacks (Tob To) are best executed when you are in the safe position, that is on the outside of the line of attack. When you evade the attack and you counter simultaneously, without blocking or parrying, you are using the Pun Lum strategy. This is the most advanced and safe counter fighting system in Muay. Remember to always pursue (Tid Tam) the opponent after the first counter, with follow up counter attacks, exploiting his loss of balance, until he is defeated. Talking about defense: blocking and parrying (Pad Pong) should be used only as a last resource. In fact, whenever you are in range to apply a block, you are also in range to execute a counter attack. If you use that split second to block the opponent’s attack, you miss the chance to counter strike. Attacking is superior to blocking as far as defense is concerned. Marco de Cesaris: In your opinion, what is the relationship between Traditional Muay and modern Thai Boxing? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: When we make a comparison between the techniques of Muay Boran and the techniques of modern Muay Thai, it is evident that some Muay Boran maneuvers cannot be used in Muay Thai because they are potentially too dangerous for sport fighting. I’ll make an example to clarify the difference. When the opponent attacks you with a roundhouse kick to the body or head, you can counter with a kick to the supporting leg. In order to do that, you can apply the maneuver called Taye Kham Sao: a low side kick aimed at the opponent’s supporting knee. Otherwise, the high swing kick can be countered with a low swing kick aimed at the calf or back of the leg of the attacker. This Mai Muay is called Thaen Kwad Laan. Both techniques rely on the same counter-fighting principle. Both techniques are equally fast. However, the first, Tayae Kham Sao, can be used only in a real fight: in fact, it cannot be used in a professional Muay Thai contest because, if properly applied, this counter-attack can cripple a boxer. The sport career of a Nak Muay could be dramatically cut short. On the other hand, the second Mai Muay, Thaen Kwad Laan, is actually used by all professionals in sport Muay Thai. In fact, it is a very efficient counter-attack that, if properly applied, leads to a spectacular throw but doesn’t hurt the attacker too much. All in all, traditional Muay Thai and modern Muay Thai have the same root. The difference lies in the aim of learning. Currently, the first aim of someone who learns traditional Muay Thai is to use it in real life (self-defence). On the other hand, the ones who learns sport Muay Thai wishes to use it in sport, often to build up a professional career. All things considered, the one who truly loves Muay Thai (traditional or modern) will always try to find the real root of his Martial Art and try to keep alive the culture it came from.

Great Masters Marco de Cesaris: What would you suggest to a western student of Muay Boran who really wants to reach the core of this Martial Art? (Arjarn Chaisawat, an extremely open minded Thai Grand Master, has shared with me several times his thought about the real nature of Muay: is it exclusively a Thai cultural heritage or can it be considered a World heritage, nowadays?) G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: Everybody can learn Muay Boran. Everybody can learn Muay Thai. The one who was born and raised within Thai culture is advantaged. However, he who was not born in Thailand but really wants to learn and works hard, can reach the same level, some day. Marco de Cesaris: Would you like to send a final word to all Budo International Magazine’s readers? G.M. Chaisawat Tienviboon: We are Budoka. We are Martial Arts lovers. We are family. Master Bruno Tombolato: I'd pretty much like being able to record a video on that subject, I think it is an activity with a great future in schools, since, regardless of the style you do, it can be practiced by everyone. It has its own rules and the program is based on the use of short and long guns. It is a sport that is growing a lot in China today. This year I will certainly do a training course for those who have an interest in including it in their schools. Budo International: With Shaolin and its Martial Arts being the center of your teaching and practice, what would you say to a young man who wanted to get started in all this? Master Bruno Tombolato: I would tell him to start as soon as possible, since Shaolin Martial Arts are part of a very beautiful path, where you can find many answers, not only in the martial field, but in personal development. This path will help you to know yourself and thus become aware of his body and mind. Budo International: What is your experience of the clash of cultures that involves training or learning something Oriental in today’s West? Pros and cons...? Master Bruno Tombolato: I've always been an open-minded person, so it's never been a concer n for me; nevertheless, I realize that a lot of people may run into drawbacks and difficulties. I think the main problem is the lack of information in Spanish, and therefore the limited capacity you have to transmit the teachings beyond copying the movements. When I realized this inconvenience, I immediately made up my mind to study Chinese and start researching, since when I opened the school I felt that I was lacking tools and as I was teaching, I realized that there were many things I didn't understand. So I started looking for as much information as possible about everything, so that it would help me improve my cultural knowledge, backgrounds and

origins, masters, etc. I invested a lot of money in trips to China, books (Chinese, Spanish and English), working hours of translations, interviews, communications with teachers in China, asking everything, all the time, some teachers laughed at the so many things I asked, but I didn’t care, I was like a sponge! All in all, I still study Chinese. My Chinese is not perfect, but I focused mainly on the Kung fu vocabulary, putting aside everything else, so in this field I have no problem; having been able to learn in this way has been a great advantage. Now I am going to dare to tell you some statements that other masters in

China have told me: “You can find more traditional Kung fu outside of China than in China itself”, and this is a topic to talk about at length; for example, they also told me: "You Westerners have more interest in the traditional than Chinese themselves. Chinese are no longer interested in traditional Kung fu." They see us that we travel there, we invest money in Kung fu, something they don't do there. But watch out, I'm not saying all the Chinese, but a large percentage. And, as I said before, those words are from their masters, not mine! Now, from my point of view, I have seen Shaolin Wushu schools with thousands of students and traditional Kung fu schools with three students. So that’s what they referred to earlier. Is this perhaps our advantage? That is, do we look inward through the practice of traditional Martial Arts looking for personal and spiritual development, tradition, while in China, for example, they see it differently?... I'll just drop it there! Now, what also seems really curious to me is the way in which we "fanaticize" or "fall in love" with another culture to make it our own and live it with passion.

Budo International: It is well known that Chinese society is generally very closed among themselves. How do they look at the fact that a Westerner gets so involved in their traditions? Shifu Bruno Tombolato: I think they like it, they find it amusing, in a good way. In all the areas in which I've been involved with people of Chinese nationality, I have always been treated in the best possible way, with the utmost respect, giving everything; I have seen a great deal of generosity. The treatment in this way has always been reciprocal, being able to demonstrate knowledge about their culture puts you on a higher step. I believe that, in the fact that a person embraces another culture that is not his or her own, striving to know it thoroughly and educate himself or herself in this new culture, there is only respect and admiration. I have come across people of Chinese nationality who mastered Spanish to perfection, danced flamenco, etc., and while it's true that cases are few, but many more will appear. Now in China, Spanish is one of the languages of interest, along with English. A couple of years ago I was called to roll a documentary on the topic how a Westerner experiences Chinese culture, we shot in China ... Whether the documentary has finally been released or not is something I ignore, perhaps one day it'll come to my hands… The experience was very curious, as we embraced Martial Arts, music (I play a traditional Chinese instrument called Guqin, considered one of the Four Arts), the tea ceremony, and more. One part was shot in China and another in Spain. I hope I can see the result.

Shaolin Budo International: The spiritual part of Shaolin, its Buddhism, what place does it occupy in your life and in your teaching? Shifu Bruno Tombolato: Well, as you know, it could be said that I am "officially Buddhist", as I did the ceremony of taking the three shelters and the five precepts a few years ago, with my master Shi De Yang; that's when I inherited the 32nd generation of Shaolin. I try to live and act on what I committed myself to, always carrying these teachings with me, and understanding Buddhism as an education rather than a religion. At the same level of teaching, I always try to give the best possible example, always with deeds and not just words, there are many Buddhists in the words, but very few in the facts. I hardly talk about this topic, mainly because I consider it to be something personal and, as I said before, it's always better to preach by example. When they ask me, I am always open to answering, but I don't want to be a standard-bearer or a fanatic who rubs in people faces what he is or is not. Out of respect for all other ways of thinking, I feel it's better this way. In my schools we have several Buddhist images, two altars in which every day I make offerings and show the due respect for the teachers who left us all their wisdom to improve our lives. It is part of my daily ritual.

Shaolin Budo International: For a few years we coincided as speakers on the Wellness Congresses, carried out by the Cadena Ser Radio Network, in which you gave several courses with your wife. What experience did you get out of all this? Shifu Bruno Tombolato: The truth is that the Cadena Ser Wellness Congresses were a magnificent experience, very well organized. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to bring our passion to other people. I enjoyed having coincided with you, and especially having attended your presentations. I remember very clearly one in which you shared valuable information. I remember I gave numerous Shaolin Qi Gong courses, while my wife conducted courses on tea ceremony. We also did calligraphy and origami workshops, and once we carried out a tea ceremony with live traditional Chinese music. It was great. A particular experience I got from there is that I realized how difficult it is teaching or transmitting to an audience, who actually ignore why they are there. I mean, it’s not like when you give a course on a specific topic, where the audience present does know exactly what they want. Luckily, at that moment I could adapt and find the formula to be able to speak without so many technicalities and for all audiences. On numerous occasions I've had to speak to an audience outside the specific vocabulary of Qi Gong, for example, and as I said before, I have always been able to adapt with no problems. Budo International: What are your most imminent plans? Shifu Bruno Tombolato: Currently I am very focused on the Shaolin Kung fu and Shaolin Qi gong formation. My

most imminent plans revolve around this, and that I can improve my schools as much as possible, not only in student service, but also in the preparation of instructors, so that I can offer the best quality in Chinese Martial Arts. On the other hand, I am preparing the second volume of my book SHAOLIN: CULTURE AND TRADITION, the Kung fu of the Warrior Monks, but I don’t think I will finish it until the end of 2022, we will see how it goes, it is not a simple work and it takes a lot of time and effort.
