CLEAN IT OUT
AND

PASS
IT ON
BY REBECCA CUTHBERT
W
hat’s better than cleaning out closets and cupboards? Donating the contents to worthy local charities that can use them! If you don’t have the time or ability to spend hours volunteering, donating items can be another great way to help your community. For instance, the City Mission, which logs thousands of volunteer hours every month, is always in need of items for their volunteers to distribute. Decluttering our living spaces is a big step toward reaching those goals. Instead of adding more waste to landfills, we can give those gently used items to community members in need—both human and animal. The Buffalo City Mission, located at 100 East Tupper Avenue in Buffalo, provides assistance and comfort to homeless and impoverished men, women, and children. Laurie Patsalides with BCM public relations explains that there are plenty of pre-owned items needy folks would appreciate this season. “We could always use clothing in
good shape, like warm coats, jeans, sweaters, and any other (heavier) winter clothing, in any size, for men, women, and children,” she says. “We have the Agape Shop, where anyone can come and receive what they need for free.” Patsalides adds that the City Mission is in need of housewares, including furniture, lamps, kitchen items, and small kitchen appliances. “Especially if you get a replacement or a double for the holidays, donating the older one is a great gift for someone who’s in poverty,” she says. Donations can be dropped off at
100 E. Tupper Ave., and in many cases, community members can arrange for pickup by calling 8548181 ext. 424.
Animals in need But it isn’t only the two-legged among us who need some assistance. The dogs and cats at the SPCA serving Erie County need help, too. From dog walkers to volunteers feeding animals and cleaning up a bit, all help is welcome. The SPCA, located at 300 Harlem Road in West Seneca, is always in need of common household items—

FOREVER YOUNG and the less money the organization has to spend on these things, the more it can spend on lifesaving medical care for its residents. “We have a ‘wish list’ on our website, (yourspca.org/donate/ourwish-list), where you can find all the items we need,” says Bethany Kloc, communications manager. “We can use newspapers to line the bottoms of litter boxes, washcloths to wash the little kittens’ and puppies’ faces, and blankets for the kennels.” And, of course, towels—the SPCA goes through many towels. Kloc also listed plastic animal
carriers, large stuffed animals, and pillowcases. (Note that the SPCA cannot use heavy comforters, sheets, knitted or crocheted items, electric blankets, or pillows.) “We will also take used dog collars,” Kloc says. “If your pet is ‘over’ the last fashion trend, we’ll use it!” When it comes to all other types of paper clutter, like old magazines, junk mail, catalogs, and more, don’t just toss it out—recycle it! Better yet, look for a yellow and green “Paper Retriever” bin in your neighborhood to help a local organization fundraise. There are so many other ways to help your community. For instance: • If your extreme couponing habit got a little out of hand recently and you realized no one needs fifty cans of tuna, donate what you won’t use to the Food Bank of WNY or your church’s soup kitchen. •
If you had dreams of arts and crafts projects but never found time to do the actual crafting,
ask a nearby elementary school if they can use the supplies for art class. •
Hoarded horticultural supplies might find a new home with a community garden.
•
Extra hand tools could lend a hand to a struggling vocational program.
Sometimes, opening the door to a beautiful and productive new year is as simple as opening a closet door (and pulling out all the items you don’t use anymore). Instead of throwing those old appliances, housewares, clothes, and blankets in the trash, recycle them by making a donation to a community service organization. Make 2019 your year for a cleaner house, a clearer conscience, and a lighter heart! FY Rebecca Cuthbert lives, writes, and cares for shelter dogs in Dunkirk. SEPARATE BEDROOMS BY JUDITH A. RUCKI
A
friend was busy redecorating her home when I asked her how the project was going. She said she had just finished work on her husband’s room. At first I thought she meant his study, or perhaps she had created a man cave for him. Nope, she meant he had his own bedroom. Shortly after that conversation took place, another friend remarked about having his and her bedrooms. I began wondering if this was a trend or if something else was afoot. A recent survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation says twenty-three percent of married couples routinely sleep in separate beds. It also turns out Good Morning America ran a story about this subject awhile back. Health.com followed up with an article based on the episode. Both confirmed what my friends were saying. There were reasons
other than animosity or a failing marriage that sent them to their separate rooms. Snoring, which affects half the adult population, seems to be a big factor in deciding to sleep apart. The partner who sounds like a jet breaking the sound barrier may not realize he (or she) is causing such a racket. This can leave the blearyeyed partner desperate for some shut-eye. Other couples say restless leg or arm syndrome is the culprit. Being kicked or punched all night is not conducive to sound sleep. Insomnia, regular nocturnal trips
to the bathroom, and sleepwalking add to the list of why your own room is sounding better and better. Note that these physical issues should be mentioned to your primary care physician. Treatment may be available and get you back to sleeping well together. Sometimes separate rooms are a good idea when one partner has the flu and does not want to spread germs. Self-quarantine can be a good thing. Seemingly small issues like one person wanting to sleep with a nightlight on while the other prefers total darkness can cause difficulties.
ARTICLES
FOREVER YOUNG Personal habits also play a part. Couples may have different ways of winding down after a long day. If she wants to read quietly while he plans on watching TV, or he is playing his guitar while she is attempting meditation, problems can arise. Conflicting work schedules can also make sleeping in the same room difficult. Anyone who has had to catch a 5 a.m. flight or worked a swing shift knows how both partners can become sleep deprived in short order. Night owls and early birds can easily ruffle each other’s feathers. And neither is likely to adapt to the other’s schedule. Susan Heitler, PhD, a clinical psychologist in Denver, Colorado, says, “The danger with not sleeping well is that couples often start to resent each other. One partner will start to see the other as a physical manifestation of the fact that they can’t sleep at night, and grow bitter and angry toward them.”
Being excessively tired can make people snappish and annoyed. It’s hard to communicate well when you are barely able to keep your eyes open. Sleeping apart may make us feel well rested. But does it harm other aspects of the relationship, like cuddle time and sex? Heitler’s solution is to “develop a morning and nighttime routine so that you can still work those closeness hours in without sacrificing quality sleep. That is, bookend your cuddle time around your actual sleep time.” Think of it as a mini date night, or even morning. Cuddle on the couch before going off to your separate rooms. Or slip into bed together early in the morning for some snuggle time. Negotiate some romantic time with your partner. You may agree that a knock on the door accompanied by a suggestion for intimacy would be welcome. Get creative and
figure out ways to enhance your relationship. Just make sure to turn off the electronic devices to avoid distraction or interruption. Heitler points out that having separate rooms is beneficial only if it benefits the quality of your sleep. She says, “If you’re splitting up at night because you’re fighting, or because you’re having sex issues, then it’s going to do more harm than good.” She advises that if you are pushing bigger issues under the rug, you may as well deal with them before a bigger blowup occurs. KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH GRANDKIDS THROUGH TECH
BY DANIEL MEYER AND WENDY GUILD SWEARINGEN
T
oday’s advanced technology allows grandparents to communicate on a daily basis with their beloved grandchildren, even if they live thousands of miles away.
Maintaining a relationship with someone from afar can be difficult, but the challenge of staying in touch can be conquered if there is a strong enough desire to learn how to navigate computer programs and comprehend how to efficiently use a smartphone. For instance, Michael and Joanna Cerrone of Hamburg, New York, are determined to have their daughter Magda and Joanna’s mother in Poland know each other and form a unique relationship. That focus has helped formulate a shared goal to adapt with the times and take advantage of technological advancements that allow for frequent communication despite obvious physical barriers. By using cell phones to access video chat programs such as
FaceTime and Skype, the Cerrones can easily contact Joanna’s mother, Bozena Obst, who lives over 4,200 miles away in Ostrow Wielkopolski, a city located in central Poland. Their frequent conversations often include long stretches of interaction between grandmother and granddaughter, lively talks that include back-andforth banter, often in Polish. Magda enjoys speaking to her babcia in Poland. She has quickly grasped the basic fundamentals of the Polish language, which thrills her parents, who are so pleased that they are able to maintain regular communication. The familiarity of speaking several times each day allows them to bond, even though they are several thousand miles apart. Maintaining this sort of familiarity
through technology like Skype and iPhone FaceTime can help grandparents avoid the awkward or clumsy interactions that can hamper many long-distance relationships. “Without the technology, it would be extremely difficult to maintain the incredible relationship that Magda and her grandmother have,” says Michael. “We are blessed and fortunate. It’s also allowed Magda to stay in touch and become familiar with her aunt, uncle, and cousins who also live in Poland.” The advanced technology and the family’s commitment to take the time to stay connected means that the 4,236 mile distance between grandmother and granddaughter has become less of a burden.

Providing tools for sustainable change BY MATTHEW BIDDLE
Photos by Stephen Gabris
O
ver the past seven years, the University Heights Tool Library has come a long way from “three rakes on a wall”; that’s how the nonprofit’s all-volunteer staff often describes its humble beginnings. These days, the bright lime and teal walls—and an upstairs storage space unseen by members and passersby—are jam-packed with thousands of tools, all available to rent for just twenty dollars a year. The goal: provide communities with the tools they need—literally and figuratively—to create the change they want.
In 2011, after struggling with an absentee landlord and working with his roommates to fix up their own apartment, then-University at Buffalo student Darren Cotton learned about the tool library concept that allows individuals, block clubs, and other organizations to rent tools and learn how to use them, all for a small annual fee. He opened the University Heights Tool Library on Main Street later that year, and, in 2012, it relocated to its current location on West Northrup Place in the heart of the walkable Heights neighborhood. “The Tool Library gives people access to tools to fix up their home, start a garden. We centralize those resources in one spot, and make it affordable and accessible,” says Cotton, sitting in the organization’s
adjacent CoLab space, where it hosts workshops, meetings, and other programs. “It’s not a new idea—tool libraries have been around for decades—but it seemed like a really good fit for the neighborhood, especially being a university neighborhood with a lot of transient renters who might not invest $200 in a chop saw but want to fix up their home.” In this way, the Tool Library is an excellent example of the sharing economy, a sustainable economic model in which individuals share resources rather than owning them outright (see sidebar). “Does everyone on a block need to own their own lawnmower if their plot of land they need to mow is like thirty feet by thirty feet? Probably not,”
Cotton points out. “That’s what a lot of members tell us—they’re happy to join because they realize it’s reducing their carbon footprint. When we’re buying less things, then less things have to be produced, and things that are being created are being used exponentially more over their lifetime than they would be sitting in someone’s basement or closet. Our goal is to get those tools out of basements, closets, and attics,” Cotton continues. “Instead of being used for twelve minutes [over their lifetime,] they’ll be used for 1,200 minutes or 12,000 minutes.” Today, the Tool Library has more than 3,000 tools, more than half of which were donated, usually by individuals cleaning out garages or passing on items from loved ones

THE SHARING ECONOMY AT WORK “Most people who come into the Tool Library really just need a hole in the wall—they don’t need the drill itself,” explains Aaron Krolikowski, a University Heights Tool Library volunteer, during a 2015 TEDx talk with founder Darren Cotton. In other words, many people just need access to tools, but don’t need to own them. That’s the entire philosophy behind the sharing economy, a model that’s gained increasing attention over the past decade as the rise of social media and apps have made it easier to share resources across neighborhoods, cities, and beyond. In addition to the Tool Library, here are other instances of the sharing economy at work in Buffalo: Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries: The history of our public library systems dates to 1836, long before the “sharing economy” was a recognized term. These days, residents can borrow books, music, and movies, and use computers, a 3D printer, recording booth, and other equipment at the library. Non-circulating materials include local history collections, sheet music, rare books, and maps. Little Free Libraries: Mini-libraries of all shapes and colors are popping up on lawns and street corners across town. Each encourages passersby to take a book and leave another for
who passed away. (If you’re interested in donating, call 716-510-1745 or visit thetoollibrary.org.) By the end of last year, almost 900 people from nearly seventy ZIP codes were represented in its membership, though about a third live within a twenty-minute walk of the organization. Those tools, members, and volunteers are having a big impact. Throughout the year, the Tool Library is part of many community-driven, grassroots efforts to boost University Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods, whether the organization is simply providing tools to other groups or is initiating and leading a multi-year initiative. Through ReTree the District, for example, the Tool Library has planted more than 1,200 trees across the neighborhood since 2015, helping to restore green spaces and bring the community together. About 1,900 volunteers have contributed more than 7,000 hours of their time to the project. Meanwhile, the Tool Library collaborates with the Bailey Avenue Business Association and other organizations for Bailey Fights Blight, an initiative to improve and reimagine public spaces through street cleanups, community gardening, and public art. According to Cotton, the organization catalogued blighted properties along Bailey Avenue before starting their efforts and, two years later, and found a forty percent decline in blight, including many properties their team never touched, which demonstrates how dedication and investment beget further investment.
someone else to enjoy. Airbnb, Couchsurfing, VRBO: If you have an extra room—or an entire apartment—to spare, Airbnb, Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO), and similar services allow you to make use of it by renting space to travelers. Meanwhile, Couchsurfing, which launched in 2004, is a social network and app in which local hosts invite travelers to stay free of charge. Co-Working Space: By using shared workspaces, freelancers, sole proprietors, and startup founders don’t need to invest in office space of their own and can enjoy the amenities and community that co-working spaces provide. Locally, Inception Buffalo, and dig in the Innovation Center offer co-working space, while the Annex Kitchen on West Ferry provides a shared kitchen and workspace to chefs, bakers, food trucks, and other culinary operations. Transportation: In addition to our public transit system, other innovative forms of transportation-sharing abound in the Queen City: consider ZipCar for automobiles; Reddy Bikeshare, Blue Bikes, and rentals from shops like Campus Wheel Works for bicycles; and Buffalo Boat Share for a summer day on the lake. Buy Nothing: Search on Facebook to see if there’s a Buy Nothing Project for your neighborhood. These groups, and others like them, allow people to donate items they don’t need to others in their area, as well as make requests for items they’re looking for, rather than buy them new.

ARTICLES “One of my co-workers lives off Bailey Avenue on the street where we did our first mural, and she said, ‘Every time I drive down the street, it just makes me so happy to see that mural,’” Cotton says. “That’s not as flashy as investing five million dollars in the community, but you’re having an impact on people’s daily lives, and that’s really the story of the Tool Library. It’s these incremental improvements over the course of years—and over the course of hundreds and thousands of people—that really add up.” Most recently, the Tool Library launched the Dare to Repair Café with the City of Buffalo Recycling Department. These periodic events, at which volunteers repair everything from clothing and small electronics to lamps and vacuums, encourage people to repair and repurpose what they already have, rather than run to a department store for replacement. “So far, we’ve repaired 199 items, and that accounts for roughly 1,700 pounds of waste that’s been kept out of local landfills,” Cotton explains. “Stats are great, but it’s also [about] talking to the elderly woman who brought in this beautiful antique lamp that’s been sitting in her house not working for the past forty years. [we] see how happy she is; those are the stories we like to share.” Within the next two years, the organization hopes to move into a larger space and increase its revenue—without raising membership rates—so it can focus other funds on community projects. Meanwhile, Cotton, who grew up observing the impact PUSH Buffalo has on the West Side, says he’s proud to be a small cog in the city’s resurgence, helping transform the neighborhood in which he now owns his first home.
“I was probably the worst person to start a tool library because the last time I’d used a power tool was probably eighth grade shop class,” Cotton smiles. “But I just saw what the Tool Library could be to so many different people, and I’m happy to say my skills have improved.” FY Matthew Biddle is a Tonawanda based writer and regular Buffalo Spree and Forever Young contributor Tweet him at @matthew_biddle.

ASK THE EXPERT
JOSEPH V. FRITZ, PHD, CEO DENT Neuroscience Research Center TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF NEUROIMAGING AT DENT.
DENT NEUROLOGIC INSTITUTE ABOUT Founded in 1963, the Dent Neurologic Institute is the largest private neuroscience group practice in the United States. Its mission is to provide the highest quality care through comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, with rapid access to expert teams lead by fellowship trained physicians. Dent maintains a leadership stature through education, research, patient advocacy and international collaborations.

Integrating new diagnostic and treatment protocols into a comprehensive, accessible outpatient clinic has been in our DNA since the Dent Neurologic Institute was founded in 1963. We were among the first in the nation to install CT and MRI scanners in the 70’s and 80’s. With never-before-seen visibility into neurologic disease, Dent established the American Society of Neuroimaging and the Dent Neuroimaging Fellowship Program to share discoveries. Today, our multispecialty team of clinicians and scientists continues to advance neuroimaging through clinical practice, education, guideline development and scientific discovery.
HOW IS DENT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER IMAGING CENTERS? Neuroimaging is fundamental to the workup of neurologic disorders and is tightly incorporated into our neurology practice. Given the sophisticated functioning of the nervous system and often subtle anomalies that are responsible for a patient’s symptoms, we believe it is critical to use fellowship trained experts in both neurology and imaging to optimize techniques and provide professional interpretation. We also employ clinical scientists that work with international experts to bring and enhance the latest technology for our patients. This unique combination of neuroimaging expertise, direct patient care relationship, and state of the art technology leads to highly effective diagnosis and treatment of the most complex neurologic disorders.
WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH IN PRIVATE PRACTICE SETTING? ISN’T THAT THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES AND HOSPITALS? Keeping on the forefront of innovation requires a scientific infrastructure, which is indeed uncommon for an outpatient environment. But neurologic disorders are primarily managed outside the hospital, and it is the outpatient setting that houses the most complete patient record. As a comprehensive practice that has been in the community for 55 years, DENT possesses a richness of patient experience that lends itself to experiential learning and scientific discovery. In a nutshell, we see more patients, have access to more data, and are less inhibited by red tape than most institutions. Furthermore, our research is driven from a practical realism that resonates with everyday neurologists. We believe it is our obligation to leverage these unique advantages and use scientific methods to improve the care for all patients.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR DENT IMAGING? We have entered an era of explosive growth in treatment options for neurologic disorders. New quantitative imaging methods are being developed for precise targeting and tracking of therapeutic effectiveness. We have also entered into beta site agreements that give us early access to breakthrough technology. Examples include dramatic shortening of patient scan time, and exciting new insights into functional changes associated with behavioral, memory, pain and other neurological syndromes. Of course, we will continue to educate the neuroimaging community through national webinars, conference presentations, new fellowships, and journal publications.

There comes a time when each of us needs some care. It might be short or long-term nursing care, but it also might be care that comes to your home. Or care that ills your days with friends and new experiences. And it might be care you need for just a little while, as your body heals. We provide all of these things, and do it for a simple reason because we care.
