The beach options in southern Vietnam are exciting and plentiful, with hidden bays, stretches of deserted coast, popular for wind and kite surfing, and vast sand dunes perfect for jeep safaris. Go snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, hiking and diving or for those in search of a more relaxing break there is yoga, meditation, tai chi and massage.

The South (Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet) The South is hot year round and has two seasons; one wet and the other dry. The wet season lasts from May to October and you can expect daily downpours. These are usually brief and easy to predict. The dry season from November to April is generally sunny and humid.

A significant event is celebrated in January in Danang, along the coast of Central Vietnam, called the Cau Ngu festival - the fisherman’s festival. Wandering the streets is a simple, yet wonderful way to spend the evening, making you feel like you have stepped back in time.

Vietnamese New Year

When to visit

Vietnam’s elongated shape includes tropical and subtropical zones and is the reason for the varied climate in the country.

The North (Hanoi to Sapa) Summer in the north lasts from May to October when temperatures range between 30-35 degrees Celsius with high humidity and bursts of heavy rain. The temperature varies from 10-15 degrees in winter (December to March). February and March can be damp with drizzle and overcast skies.

The Centre (Nha Trang to Hue) For most of the year Nha Trang is bathed in beautiful sunshine. However, between November and December the area has heavy rain. Dalat, at an altitude of 1,500 metres is cooler than the coastal area, particularly from November through to March. Danang, Hoi An and Hue experience typhoon activity from midOctober to mid-December when the climate becomes cooler, more overcast and wetter.

Vietnamese New Year (Tet) is considered the biggest and most popular festival of the year in Vietnam. Celebrated in February, on the first day of the first month in Lunar Calendar, Tet’s celebration is the longest holiday which can last up to seven days. Visiting Vietnam during Tet can be a fantastic experience however please be aware, although the country is in celebratory mood at this time, train, buses and flights are often booked out or very expensive. Restaurants, shops, tailors and some key sites are closed and the floating markets in the Mekong do not operate for one week after Tet.

Moc Chau Love Festival Celebrated in the mountainous district of Moc Chau, Vietnam, on the 1st of September is the Moc Chau Love Festival. A unique and romantic event that sees thousands of ethnic minorities descend on the town to meet prospective partners. With all the tribes donned in vibrant dress and music filling the air, the festival is a great place to sit, watch, sing, dance and eat with the locals.

Nha Trang With 7 kilometers of golden beaches, Nha Trang is the

premier beach resort in Vietnam. The town has many restaurants and attractions to keep you entertained and the islands just offshore offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving sites. off the southeast coast of mainland Vietnam and can be reached by a 45 minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City. Made up of 16 islands, 80% of the archipelago form part of a National Park and much of the surrounding marine area has been designated a Marine Protected Area (MPA). As a result Con Dao has some of the best diving in Vietnam, with pristine reefs and a large variety of marine life. The archipelago is also an important egg-laying area for sea turtles such as the hawksbill turtle and the green turtle. Offering jungle, coral reefs, beautiful beaches and hidden lagoons Con Dao is a paradise off the beaten track.

Ho Tram Located along the coastal road of Ba Ria, Vung Tau Province,

Ho Tram is a mere 2 hours from Ho Chi Minh City by car or 90 minutes via the ferry, making it popular with Ho Chi Minh City residents. Ho Tram’s pristine, still largely undeveloped coastline provides for the nicest beach in the area combining unspoiled waters with a wide sandy beach. Laos is a laid-back landlocked country of spectacular natural beauty and strong spiritual traditions. With roughly six million people, it is one of the least populated countries in the world. It is also the least developed and most enigmatic of the three former French Indochinese states. Dominated by majestic mountains, verdant valleys and broad snaking rivers, the country is perfect for nature lovers and those seeking adventure.

Vientiane

LAOS

Situated on the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane is one of the most peaceful capital cities in Asia. With laid back streets, friendly locals and little traffic, it oozes a charm that resembles its French colonial past. Stroll around tree-lined streets visiting temples or simply wander along the banks of the Mekong.

4000 Islands One of the most impressive regions of Laos is the 4000 Islands, an archipelago in the Mekong River. Festivals and Events

Luang Namtha is a quiet town on the banks of the Nam Tha River, surrounded by thick jungle and mountains. The area provides a range of adventure based activities including trekking through the tropical terrain, visiting remote hill tribe villages, swimming in waterfalls and kayaking along the river.

The Elephant Festival - Sayaboury The month of February holds an exciting and fascinating festival in the Sayaboury province of Laos - The Elephant Festival. More than 50 elephants gather with their Mahouts to demonstrate why these magnificent beasts are a man’s best friend and worshipped in the country. From wonderful shows, ceremony’s, bathing sessions and the chance to ride on the elephants, this festival is a fun and friendly tourist attraction with homestays available to authenticate the experience.

Visas/Passports

Passports should be valid for six months after your planned date of departure from the country. Visas valid for 30 days can easily be obtained on arrival. Cost depends on nationality (from US $30-45). One passport sized photograph is required.

Boun Pi Mai or Laos New Year

Northern Laos The mountainous rugged terrain of northern Laos is home to dozens of remote villages and hidden adventure options. With possibly the best trekking in the country interspersed with boat trips to riverside villages which are only accessed by the river and without permanent electricity, a trip to Northern Laos is like stepping back in time.

Laos New Year, locally called Pi Mai, is celebrated for three days in April with a water festival. Traditionally the festival is based on the importance of water in people’s daily lives. Today, perhaps because of influence from neighbouring Thailand, people take to the streets and douse one another with water. The biggest celebrations are in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. What better way to cool down during Laos hottest time of the year than to join in!

Luang Prabang Fireboat Festival The Fireboat Festival in Luang Prabang is held on the day of the full moon in October. Throughout the country people launch small, candle lit banana-leaf boats on the rivers with offerings of incense and small amounts of money to bring luck and prosperity. In Luang Prabang, a fantastic fire boat procession takes place on the main street to the Royal Temple of Xiengthong. The best way to see it is over dinner on the Mekong, watching the boats gliding past. Following Ork Pansa, a traditional boat racing festival takes place all over the country. In Vientiane on the 31st October, you can see dragon boat races, boat parades, trade fairs and fireworks.

When to go Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons; May to October is the rainy season and November to April is the dry season. It is hottest in March and April when temperatures can reach as high as 38 degrees Celcius. The lowest temperatures, usually in December, are around 15 degrees. The average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees.

Airports Vientiane Wattay Airport is located 10 kilometres from the centre of Vietniane. Luang Prabang International Airport is located 4 kilometres from the centre of Luang Prabang. Buffalo Tours can arrange transfers to your hotel from both airports. BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2013 38

The Gibbon Experience 3 DAYS

Sayaboury Elephants 3 DAYS

The Gibbon Experience is an outstanding conservation project, deep in the Laos jungle hours from civilisation. It is a rare find for people looking for something that little bit different.

Set at the tip of a naturally forested peninsula, the Sayaboury Elephant Conservation Centre works in partnership with ElefantAsia, a nonprofit organization, set up to help protect elephants in Laos. Elephants in Laos are traditionally used as beasts of burden, exploited for their strength and agility and so the centre hosts Laos’ first hospital dedicated to elephant victims of logging accidents.

The aim of the project is to protect the area from poaching, logging and slash-and-burn farming that is destroying primary forests and its inhabitants. The project has has started a program to rehabilitate and release wildlife caught by poachers. In the last 12 months they have cared for one black gibbon, four civet cats, two macaques and one black bear. The project is based in the tree tops, where you spend your entire stay, in rustic tree houses high above the jungle below. Although they are 30 meters above ground the tree houses are all well equipped with bathrooms and showering facilities. Using zip lines to get around, you will embark on a 3 day adventure to try to find the once-thought extinct black gibbon. While you are here spend your time zipping around and exploring the surrounding jungle and visit and swim in the nearby waterfall. Alternatively simply relax in the tree houses with its abundance of fresh air and listen to the jungle sounds.

Visiting the Elephant Conservation Centre is a great way to support the conservation of this species in Laos and gain an experience you will never forget. Your visit to the centre funds the running costs of the Elephant Hospital and allows mahouts to gain experience with tourists. Converting elephants from the dangerous logging industry into ecotourism is one of the Center’s goals. During your time here you will be introduced to the centre’s herd of elephants including the pregnant elephants, mothers and babies staying in the elephant nursery. The mahouts will teach you how to mount and dismount an elephant and show you how to bathe an elephant. You could visit the elephant museum and boutique, bathe in the lake, lend a helping hand to clean the hospital, nursery or yard or assist in the kitchen and learn how to prepare traditional Laotian dishes!

SOMETHING DIFFERENT... Traditional silk dying and weaving class. Spend the day in a stunning Mekong riverside garden learning about silkworms, natural dyes and weaving techniques and dye your own silk scarf to take home as a momento. Local Laotian Family Cooking Class. Learn the art of Laos cuisine with expert help from a Laos family. Visit a local market, learn about the traditional ingredients used in Laos cooking and create a meal in a local family’s home. 41 BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2013

Khao Sok National Park

Situated in the south of Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest primary rainforests in Thailand, where boutique camps are set up for a comfortable jungle adventure. Wake up to sounds of birdsong in competition with the territorial gibbon call, echoing down the valley.

Airports

Suvarnabhumi Airport is approximately 25 kilometres outside Bangkok. Buffalo Tours can arrange a transfer to take you to your hotel.

Visas/Passports

Guests can usually obtain a 30 day visa at the border on arrival, which is free for most nationalities and no photograph is required. A passport with at least six months validity from the date of entry is required.

Festivals

Songkran

Songkran, Thai New Year, is the most important festival in the country. People celebrate in various ways such as washing holy Buddha images with blessed water, honouring elderly members of the community and feasting with their families. It is also one of the world’s biggest water fights, and parties roll out onto the streets.

Fireboat Festival

Beaches

Thailand’s beaches are renowned for their powdered white sand, turquoise seas and swaying palms. Whether you’re after action such as diving, rock climbing and water-sports or pure relaxation by simply swinging in a hammock escaping only to get a massage or a cocktail, Thailand’s beach options are second to none.

Marking the end of the Buddhist Lent in October is the Fireboat Festival celebrated in Nakorn Phanom , in the northeast of the country. Locally called Lai Rua Fai, this immensely traditional festival sees thousands of bamboo boats decorated with brightly lit lanterns floating down the Mekong. The whole place comes alive with music, dancing and abundance of wonderful food options.

Surin Elephant Festival

Celebrated annually on the third weekend in November is the Elephant Round-Up Festival in Surin, in the Isaan Province of Thailand. This lively two day event showcases how much these sacred animals are valued in Thai culture. Over 100 elephants and their mahouts participate in various games and challenges to test strength, grace and intelligence.

Loi Kratong Festival / Candle Festival

One of the oldest traditions takes place throughout Thailand in November in the form of Loi Krathong, the festival of lights. To thank the Goddess of Water, hundreds of thousands of banana leaf floats are set adrift in rivers and waterways in an entrancing ritual meant to take away sins and bring prosperity and good luck.

When to go

Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. May to October is the rainy season and November to April is the dry season. It gets hottest in March and April when temperatures can reach as high as 38 degrees celsius. The lowest temperatures, usually in December, are around 15 degrees. The average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees. BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2013 50

Volunteer and Educational Travel Buffalo Tours believe responsible travel is an effective tool for poverty alleviation, cultural preservation and environmental protection. If you want to make a difference whilst on holiday, our Volunteer and Educational Travel experiences aim to provide you with an alternative, affordable and unique experience that will also make an enormous difference to the lives of the communities you work in. Your placement will be part of a wider development plan that aims to bring about sustainable long term changes. You will live in a local community and work alongside its members to achieve these development goals.

Vietnam Mai Chau Hilltribe Experience Mai Chau is situated in the Hoa Binh province of Vietnam, 150km northwest of Hanoi and is home to various ethnic minority groups who are lacking basic living standards. They have a limited health care system that lacks proper clinics and hospitals and their children are learning in schools and kindergartens that are easily destroyed in the rainy season. Buffalo Tours was the first company to pioneer trekking and homestay accommodation in this region eight years ago. We have close ties with the local villages and government and support them both financially and socially through these volunteer placements in the Thai and H’Mong villages.

How to get involved

The Mai Chau project needs volunteers to fund and build various community development projects. All projects undergo a strict needs analysis process and local staff work closely with community leaders to ensure projects are planned, implemented and evaluated successfully. During the volunteer work we encourage taking an active role in village life, such as helping with farming works like cutting rice in the harvest. Mai Chau people are warm and welcoming so with just a smile and a willingness to help out, you can form true bonds in just days. By expressing a genuine interest in their culture you will also be giving the most valuable gift, helping them rebuild cultural pride lost in the face of modernisation.

Laos Seuang River Experience The Seuang River Experience is situated just two hours outside of the UNESCO World Heritage town Luang Prabang. Despite rapid progress in the past decade, up to 80% of the Seuang River Valley population live in poverty and do not have access to adequate health care, housing and sanitation. Poverty, combined with rapid population growth and unequal distribution of economic development, are dramatically increasing demands on remaining forests and wildlife as well as slowly draining pride. The Seuang River Experience’s goal is to fight poverty, preserve traditional cultures and conserve nature.

How to get involved

The Seuang River Experience seeks participating schools, universities and community-service groups to help fund and build specific community development projects within rural villages. All projects undergo a strict needs analysis process and local staff work closely with community leaders to ensure projects are planned, implemented and evaluated successfully. Potential projects that have been identified through the analysis process include kindergarten and elementary school construction, village water supply improvement, agricultural education centre for a junior high school and a livestock improvement scheme. 71 BUFFALO TOURS TRAVEL BROCHURE 2013

Cambodia Angkor Educational Experience The Angkor Educational Experience is in the cultural heart of South East Asia, in the villages surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage site, Angkor Wat. Easily accessible with direct flights daily, Siem Reap and surrounding area create the perfect setting for those seeking a cultural, action-oriented experience. Over 80% of villagers in Kien Sangker Commune live in poverty, of which 40% are in extreme poverty. The majority of the population does not have access to adequate health care, housing, electricity and sanitation. The Angkor Educational Experience is a cooperative, community based tourism initiative tasked with fighting poverty through development and supplemental income generation.

How to get involved

Angkor Educational Experience is looking for school and university groups to help fund and build specific community development projects within rural villages. For example, a day-care centre and nursery are needed to provide a safe and educational place for young children that are left at home for long periods of time while parents are working. The neglect and loss of early childhood education is a constant concern. By working with Buffalo Tours, the twelve villages of Kien Sangker Commune are hoping community based tourism will allow local residents to earn supplemental income through providing services and products to responsible travel groups.

Thailand Lanna Educational Experience The Lanna Educational Experience is set in the Om Goi District atop the mountains of northern Thailand, two hours by road from Chiang Mai. The Experience offers an opportunity for visitors to gain an insight into local Thai history and culture, in a truly unique setting. Exclusive to Buffalo Tours, Lanna is a cooperative, community based tourism initiative tasked with fighting poverty through development and supplemental income generation. The Lanna Educational Experience was initiated by Buffalo Tours after a lengthy community needs analysis and planning process with the ethnic Karen hill tribe villages of Om Goi District. By working with Buffalo Tours, communities are hoping responsible tourism will allow local residents to earn supplemental income through providing services and products to visiting groups.

How to get involved

This project provides educational group tours, which are customised to meet the curriculum and community service needs of international schools and universities. Tours will combine a variety of activities such as sightseeing, volunteer work, academic field studies, leadership training, outdoor education and cultural exchange. Lanna Educational Experience also provides cultural tours and ecotourism adventures for individual travellers.
