Welcome Spring & Summer!

Garden Conferences Galore!

Greetings! I am very pleased to report that since January 1 we have experienced an incredible growth in attendance. The opening of the new exhibits on January 14 attracted 8,200 visitors over the three-day weekend. Lumagination delighted 13,500 visitors during its 25 day run, and the Orchid Show attracted over 2,000 guests. The combined attendance for the first two months of this year exceeded 33,000.

The American Public Gardens Association will hold their annual conference, Celebrating Connections, in Hamilton, Ontario June 19-23. Botanical Gardens’ staff and volunteers will participate and attend this year’s conference. There will also be a special tour for conference participants visiting the Botanical Gardens on June 19. The Botanical Gardens is a proud, long-time member of the American Public Gardens Association.

Photo Contest 2016 - Sharon Dentice

The excitement will continue with an incredible Spring Flower Exhibit - one of the most beautiful times of the year at our majestic conservatory. The exhibit will feature over 22,000 spring bulbs and other plants, lots of color and distinct fragrances. The 4-H Farm returns along with baby bunnies, chicks, pigs, ducks and much more. You still have time to join the fun and experience springtime at the Botanical Gardens. Don’t forget the Great Plant Sale running May 18-20. This is your opportunity to find unusual annuals, perennials, shrubs and much more you can’t find anywhere else. Keep in mind that the Great Plant Sale is an important fundraising event and all proceeds go to maintain and expand our spectacular indoor and outdoor collections. Summertime would not be complete without Starry Night in the Garden on June 21 and Botanics and Brews on July 13. Both events feature great music, beverages and food on the Gardens’ front lawn with our majestic tri-domed conservatory in the background. Also, parents don’t miss the opportunity for your child to have an incredible educational and fun experience this summer with our totally revamped Summer Camp. Details can be found in this edition of Under the Dome or on our website. We have a vision for the future that seeks to ensure that the Botanical Gardens is viewed as a premier cultural destination that engages visitors through a distinct plant collection that inspires curiosity and connects people to the natural world. Recently, we updated our master plan, completed a capital campaign feasibility study and will decide soon when we will embark on a capital campaign. The campaign will build out our vision for the future and generations to come. We have come a long way since 1979 when our historic, architectural and botanical treasure faced the wrecking ball. With continued support of our members, donors and friends, the future of the Botanical Gardens looks extremely bright. Thank you for your support and see you at the Botanical Gardens soon!

Intimate Ceremonies Whether big or small, wedding ceremonies are special no matter what the size. The Buffalo Botanical Gardens can accommodate all kinds of guest counts; however, intimate ceremonies here provide an experience like no other. Many couples opt to have a small, informal ceremony with their closest family and friends by their side as they mold their two lives into one. For some, this allows them the opportunity to do exactly what they want without pressure from anyone else. These couples prefer a smaller gathering, which we are happy to accommodate! We have three different locations where the couple can get married: outside in our ceremony garden, our events space or the Panama Cloud Forest. The outside location contains a gazebo surrounded by beautiful gardens. Our events greenhouse, although large in size, can be shortened to have a more intimate feel with a lovely foliage backdrop. The Panama Cloud Forest, the smallest of all the spaces, contains a large tree arbor decorated with Spanish moss and colorful orchids for a stunning background. If the couple prefers to have their ceremony outside, an indoor location is always reserved in case of inclement weather. After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests have access to the rest of the conservatory and our grounds to take beautiful photos that they will cherish for years to come. With our newly renovated greenhouses, clients have regained access to take photos on the bridge over the Koi fish pond with the breathtaking waterfall in the background; a location that has been a guest favorite for years. An intimate ceremony package at the Botanical Gardens consists of a one-hour time frame between 10am and 5pm Monday-Friday only (excluding holidays) for up to ten guests (Not included in guest count are the couple, officiant, photographer, and videographer). We love helping to make dreams come true no matter the size. To book your intimate ceremony at the Botanical Gardens, contact the Events Department at 827-1584 ext. 219, ext. 220 or events@buffalogardens.com.

Gardening Tip Keep your plants healthy with proper watering. When the weather is hot and dry, you need to make sure your plants have the water they need. Try these tips: • Water slowly and thoroughly. Turn the hose on to a dribble. Set the hose at the base of the plant and walk away. Leave the hose there long enough for the water to seep through the soil down to the roots of the plant. • If you recently planted a certain plant, remember how deep the pot was - That’s where the roots are. The water may have to get down three inches or more.

• Pay special attention to newer perennials and trees whose root systems aren’t established yet.

• It’s better to water a few plants properly every day than to haphazardly spray your entire garden every day. • Don’t get the leaves wet. The plants can’t take in moisture through the leaves. Wetting the leaves not only wastes water, it can promote disease in the plant.
