Happy New Year and happy family planning

First, a belated Happy New Year to all our readers, and may we all enjoy a successful and healthy new business year.

I would especially like to thank the 64 business card advertisers in the January issues of both The Merchant and its sister publication, BPD. While a bit late in thinking of the idea of getting industry charity support, I am pleased to say that through the mutual efforts of the advertisers concerned, and our magazines' matching contribution, in a very short time, raised $3,400, which has been donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I hope that we will be able to bring a smile to some very special children who have more to deal with than most of us can imagine, or that those of us who have healthy children or grandchildren appreciate our blessings. Speaking of family, we get to know many family businesses in every part of the country, and many are genera-

tions old. It is a special reward to see many continue to grow, while fighting the changing trends of our industry. But in some family businesses there is a tendency to think they cannot compete against the large companies. or that they cannot use the tools that allow the big companies to grow and prosper. Some just seem to continue to have a pulse and struggle from crisis to crisis.

I often hear that the plan is just about working harder and doing more, but I think that it is too simplistic to suggest that a growth plan is about working harder. It may bring some more sales and/or profits in the short term, but one of the great dangers for any company is for the company leaders to spend so much time chasing their tails and working, working, working that they become frustrated with their ability to grow the business long term, and often will retrench and dig in just to survive. Time is of the essence in business today, and a lost couple of years creates more issues for the next generation. Often they will not understand why the business will

not grow, and that it was all maPPed out years earlier when the right decisions were not made.

Growth requires a detailed vision and an investment in building business practices that the big companies useno matter how small the business. Cash cows have a bad habit of becoming dogs, as has a friend of mine's business, which has gone from $12 million to $4 million in the last four years due to consolidations and low price competition. There was a time to grow or sell out-and he did neither. A very successful business went down the tubes very quickly and with very little effort.

In a family business, sometimes the family can be as much a hindrance as it is a help. Family may not be the best way of taking your company forward. When you cannot steP back and review the industry trends and act on them, you are potentially signing the end of your business. Today it is about working smarter not harder, and family may just not cut what needs to be done for the future. You may need to go outside the family for key Positions, and look for managers and staff who are excited about your vision. are empowered to help you grow the business, and are rewarded for doing so.

You need to use tools like a detailed budget process, have formalized planning, have an emPloYee or customer advisory board, and sPend time educating employees. I cannot tell you how many companies are out there without a simple marketing plan.

A small company needs a vision to grow. As I am sure you have been told, better family planning prevents surprises !

1[-ll\fE of the door indusrry's-and other building prod- \-tucts industries, for that matter-most time-tested sales principles is that showing products to customers frsthand will result in far higher sales than a catalog or piece of literature. Nothing communicates the functionality, beauty and construction like the door itself. While this fact is in no way breaking news, it is astonishing how often this theory is not practiced.

The number of choices available to merchandise doors are nearly as numerous and the products themselves. Displays have long made up the lion's share of available merchandising tools. Multiple configurations produced by manufacturers were all variations on one main theme: provide a functional and attractive housing to display a door or doors and include a place to include product literature. Here at Simpson, we have long offered stationary displays ald rotating displays for single- and three-door configurations. The three-door 360o rotating display has proven to be a great solution for making the most of display space.

For dealers and wholesalers that have the space, it is almost always worthwhile to invest in a showroom. Showrooms help take a customer a step closer to imagining what the door will look like in his or her home. Often they are constructed to mimic a real-life setting, complete with hardware, moulding, or perhaps sidelights and a transom. Any touches that can be added to imitate the home are beneficial. And these set-ups provide the perfect opportunity to sell complementary products like hinges, hardware, sills, weatherstrip systems and other accessories.

Another option to consider is constructing displays with operational doors. The opening and closing of the door will allow the customer to appreciate the feel of a genuine wood door and further associate the doors you are sellins with "home.'

While full-size displays and showrooms do an effective job of communicating the overall appearance and drama of a door, there are other tools available for the detail-oriented customer. We know that many consumers need to see how the door is constructed before making a purchase. So we provide smaller samples-examples that a customer can hold in their hands-of glass, panel and wood species choices.

We provide two different glass sample cases, one for tempered glass options and the other for decorative glass options. The samples are labeled and fit in a CD-like case. And they give customers a chance to see the difference between options, including its pattern, texture and clarity.

Door corner samples are also an effective sales tool for your detail-oriented customer. These corner sections show how the stiles, rails and panels of a door fit together. In this one simple visual example, a customer can be assured of quality, and the durability of the product. These are

especially effective if the door you are trying to sell has a unique or advanced consffuction method. We provide corner samples for all our primed doors in an all-inclusive sample kit. The kit is organized with room for four corner samples, as well as product literature.

Do your customers ever ask you how wood species vary? For example, you may have noticed that not everyone is familiar with the difference between oak and hemlock. To make it easier for customers to select a particular species, consider displaying hand samples of wood types so they can see the difference in grain pattems and color.

If you are looking for a way to incorporate some of these merchandising ideas into your sales program, talk with your manufacturer's sales rep. They are sure to offer a variety of solutions considering your display space and sales goals. The two of you may even uncover.a new idea uniquely your own.

In the end, remember that customers are interested in buying doors because of their appearance and quality. So make sure your merchandising tools show doors in their best possible light.

r|-tHIS isn't your father's business. And it isn't Ken I Morrison's father's business either. Not anymore. Sensing that times were changing and the six-day week of retail were becoming too demanding, nine years ago the senior gentleman sold the business he'd launched in 1972 in the small Georgia town of Nashville to his son.

Ken, flashing a degree from the University of Georgia, had taken up the banking trade in nearby Columbus. Butwell, who wants to count money when you could be counting 2x4s? "The family business had been in the back of my mind while I was growing up," he confesses. Seems like that's all it takes to succumb to the dual pull of nature and nurture that spurs a guy to grab the reins.

But it turned out that what he now owned looked a bit like a showroom as seen through a fun house mirror, a shambles of dead inventory and brain-dead employees. Ken's first task was to clean house. "We had to get 25 years of accumulation out of here," he says. "l'm a firm believer that junk breeds more junk. If you have disarray and disorder out there on the floor, the employees and customers get to the point where they don't care anymore' because nothing is organized and nobody knows where to find anything.

"ln l99l we didn't know what we had on hand, so first we had to get to that functioning level. I stepped back and looked at the operation-made a list of what's right (we

had a good Activant computer system, for one thing) and what needed improvement.

"I had to replace all the equipment, too-trucks and loaders (we also handle sand and gravel)-a huge capital investment right off the bat, but it had to be done. We had five delivery trucks, but on any given morning, you had to work on four of them before you could get started. That was no way to compete with the boxes all around us' You've got to differentiate yourself by customer service, and we couldn't service customers like I wanted, show them what we can do for them. If a builder needs two boards, we get it to him."

That called for a major attitude shift among employees. For years those mice had been at play, but now a cat called Ken was on the prowl. "In the last years, Dad hadn't paid that much attention to the business, so it was run the way the employees wanted things-not," he stresses, "like it was supposed to. Employees weren't being supervised like they needed to be," so a shake-up came about-or, as Ken puts it, "a fruit basket upset" in which several valued 30year veterans stayed the course while others were replaced by fresh, new blood.

Ken set new performance standards "by basically rolling up my sleeves, going to work right with them, hands-on, not just assigning things. For instance, I'd tell a new hire, 'Look, I know it's not your job, but the bathroom is dirty. I'm not picking on you, but I clean it every week myself, so I'm not asking you to do something I wouldn't do....'I want to set a standard," he explains.

Diversification or Bust

Riding the roller coaster the nation's economy has hosted lately, Ken decided that the key to a more stable future lay in diversification. "There are too many downturns in the economy to be just a building material store. With diversity, I feel we're more recession-proof than most businesses. It makes me rest easier at night," he documents.

First off, he added floor coverings to his offerings-two carpet lines, two lines of ceramic tile and two of wood flooring, "and they're proved very successful," he says.

But success breeds its own set of challenges, leading off with the cramped conditions he thought he'd just solved. "Floor coverings require a lot of floor space to display, so in 2000 we expanded from 7,500 sq. ft. to 28,000 sq. ft. and doubled our warehouse capacity to 100,000 sq. ft. Now," he says, "floor coverings are our fastest-growing segment. and the margins are much better than in commodities."

Ken's foresight to diversify already has paid off. During September's devastating hurricanes, when roads became

rivers, building came to a quick halt. "Nobody was buying building materials, but we had good days in floor coverings, a profitable new arena."

That's after he mastered a learning curve that smacked him in the kisser. Nobody-but nobody-was loading the stuff into a pickup. If he couldn't sell it installed, no dice. So Ken has contracted with a crew of subs, whom he pays by the square foot to install, and thus can offer his customersboth pro and d-i-y-the benefit of one-stop shopping with an outfit they can trust. "People know we'll be here, bricks and wood. not a guy in a van with a telephone," he relates.

Carrying diversification a few steps farther, Ken also rents 100 mini-storage units. And six months ago, he opted to become an Ace Rental Center. (ln 2004 he was honored as a Young Retailer of the Year by the corporation.) "I bought $250,000 worth of equipment. and business is growing every day. The closest competitor is a 30-minute drive for what might be a lO-minute job. That kills half a day. This helps ensure that we're a destination people come to. When they find a clean, well-lit, well-displayed store with good staff, it's a big way for your building material sales also to grow and get better," he's pleased to report.

Morrison's firearms department represents another niche you're not likely to find at the Depot nor the independent down the road. Big deal? It is for the loyalty program he offers his pros. Oh, he's tried the usual TV, golf and vacation prizes, but Ken has found that his builders are dedicated hunters. Here they can earn, or purchase, guns, rifles, deer stands, licenses, you name it. Today Morrison's boasts 19,000 accounts. The monthly customer count tops 9,000 in a town of only 5,000 people.

Another factor in driving those numbers. he says. is "bringing in new energy." That would be the boss himself with the fire in his belly. "I jusr took on an outside sales person, but until now, I was it. People love to talk to the owner, get a snap decision. But we don't sell on price. We're here to make money, meet payroll. Two years ago, 84 Lumber came to town and lowballed us, and already they're gone. It all boils down to personal relationships; they come to you and trust you. You find ways to make customers happy, make 'em want to come back.

"Yet we've got to remain competi-

tive in price," he knows. "Customers have cars and telephones. In fact, I'm glad if they call Lowe's and Home Depot for quotes first. Then they talk to us, find out we offer free delivery and an experienced staff to give advice, and yet we cost no more."

September was one of those months straight out of Biblical trials, leading off with a hurricane taking out roads and power. Ken's wife was in the hospital, leaving him in charge of their two young boys; his dad was hospitalized, too, and a sister-in-law

was killed in Texas. Yet by October all that became ancient history as the family healed and the aftermath of the nasty weather led to a boom in both new construction and repair. Ask Ken how life is treating him these days and he rebounds, "I couldn't imagine doing anything else!"

This is incorrect. 84 Lumber built seven yards in the Pacific Northwest in the towns of Bend and Boring, Or., Puyallup. Yakima. Lacy. Vancouver. and Richland, Wa. These yards were built and closed between 1980 and 1985.

Why does each Year seem to bring more devastating forest fires?

Each fire season isn't progressively worse-last year almost 4 million acres burned comPared to nearlY 7 million acres in 2002-but we're definitely seeing a larger number of more devastating fires than there were in the past. Ironically, one reason for this is the fact that we suppress fires to protect human lives and Property.

Throughout history, fire has contributed to the health of forest ecosystems by burning underbrush and smaller trees and leaving large trees mostly intact. Today, forests are surrounded by communities, so we sup-

press fire as much as Possible. Unfortunately, this creates an unnatural build-up of what can best be described as fuel for fires that are much, much worse.

These are the fires that in 2003 killed 28 American firefighters and destroyed nearlY 6,800 homes and other structures. They burn hotter and longer, killing countless animals, polluting the air and water, and leaving the earth effectively sterilized.

There is a solution, however. Many forests are overlY dense and therefore prone to catastrophic fire. By actively managing these forestsremoving dead wood and thinning undergrowth, for examPle-we can reduce this threat.

A good examPle is the Cone fire' which burned 2,000 acres of California's Lassen National Forest in September 2002. Of the total area burned, 1,600 acres were Part of the Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest, which had been given to the U.S. Forest Service in 1934 for ecological study. The Cone fire raged intensely for days, engulfing everything in its path, until it was stoPPed dead bY a research plot in the Blacks Mountain Forest. The Plot had been thinned through selective logging and burned in a controlled way to clear the underbrush. The result was an oPen forest that not only stoPPed the fire' but looked the same as it did 500 Years ago when regular fires swept through the high, drY countrY.

As a sensible environmentalist, I believe that active management and' specifically, the kind of selective forestry that stopped the Cone fire, should be used to prevent catastrophic wildfires across the U.S.

BMD Acquires Whitewater

Whitewater Forest Products, Spokane, Wa., has been acquired bY Building Material Distributors, Inc., Galt, Ca., to be integrated into BMD's Building Products Division.

"The addition of Whitewater Forest Products is an important component to BMD's strategic initiative of market share growth and geographic expansion," noted BMD c.e.o. Steve Ellinwood. "Our acquisition requirements are for companies that operate in conjunction with BMD's core values and can bring a history of strong financial performance' Whitewater meets the criteria."

According to Whitewater president John Bly, Whitewater chose to join BMD because of their "reputation for integrity and their vision for two-step distribution" in the western U.S. Whitewater services Washington and parts of Idaho and Montana.

Crown Closes For Good

Crown Pacific Partners, Portland, Or., officially shut down at the end of 2004. The company had defaulted on more than $500 million in debt to banks and institutional investors, forcing it into ChaPter 1l bankruPtcY a year and a half ago.

Over 500,000 acres of its timber lands will go to Cascade Timberlands, which is owned bY Crown's lenders.

To try to pay off its debt, Crown sold three sawmills and five lumberyards in 2004.

For now Cascade Timberlands will be run on an interim basis bY PoPe Resources. Poulsbo, Wa., with its final long-term location to be determined.

Gapital Lumber Consolidates

Capital Lumber Co. has consolidated its Phoenix. Az., units, CaPital Building Materials and CaPitalPhoenix.

As part of the reslructuring. Capital-Phoenix, an OEM oPeration, will become a stand-alone business unit. Consolidated entity Capital will continue to distribute all products and services.

"Thisdistributionconsolidation L will enhance our level of customer F service by streamlining communica- | tion. deiivery and elficiencY of f resources. and the breakout of OEM will enhance our focus for our custom manufacturing needs," said Sam Sanregret, Capital President.

Van Vanderhoff is the new manager of the consolidated distribution

facility, while Terry powell and Steve Westfall will handle sales and project management support.

The OEM operation will now be managed by Dean Winters.

Jeld-Wen Opens New Doors

Jeld-Wen, Klamath Falls, Or., has acquired Seasonshield Inc.. Venice. Fl., for an undisclosed amount.

The company bought the window and door manufacturer in an effort to fill out its window offerines for coastal code requirements.

Seasonshield manufactures specially-engineered vinyl and aluminum windows and patio doors for codes in areas most often hit by hurricanes.

Seasonshield president and former owner Bill Gill will continue to run the operations for Jeld-Wen.

Oregon Plant To Reopen

McKillican American Inc. has acquired Weyerhaeuser's shuttered LVL plant in the Winston-Dillard, Or., area.

McKilf ican will use the 37-acre plant-vacant since March 2003-as its West Coast panel redistribution center, with plans to begin operations later this year. Its goal is to create more than 100 jobs within the next five years.

According to Gary McKillican, president of McKillican International, Edmonton, Alberta, "We have learned that a conservative approach is best, but at the same time, we have a larse vision for development of t['e McKillican Winsron facility through its development phases."

Asbestos lllness Causes Suit

A former employee has sued Grogran Robinson Lumber Co.. Great Falls, Mt., and the state of Montana, over his asbestos-related illness.

Howard and Elsie Miller are seeking damages from the state, Grogan Robinson Lumber and Robinson In-sulation Co., which processed ore from the town of Libby, Mt., for more than 50 years. At least a dozen people who worked for Robinson Insulation have either died of lung disease or been diagnosed with breathing disorders.

Grogan Robinson, which owned Robinson Insulation, merged with its wholesale arm, Lumber Yard Supply, in the 1990s.

Miller claims he became infected with the disease when he handled

Zonolite insulation from Robinson Insulation and delivered it to Grosan Robinson and other locations betwien 1955 and 1985. The suit alleges thar Robinson Insulation was aware that asbestos was hazardous but did not tell employees. It further claims Miller was exposed to a dangerous and unsafe work environment that led to his exposure to vermiculite dust and asbestos, violating his state constitutional right to a healthful environment.

Over the years, other Libby residents have sued, claiming the environment caused breathing problems.

Soper-Wheeler Gets Wordy

Sustainability is at the heart of a new book profiling California's oldest privately owned forestry company.

The Soper-Wheeler Company: A Century of Growing Trees by Michael J. Gillis chronicles the 100-year history of a lauded California forestry company. The story begins in the l9th Century on the East Coast, where both the Soper and Wheeler families first entered the forestry business. Looking to California for opportunity, the two families jointly purchased 14,000 acres of Sierra forestland in 1904.

Weathering floods, fires and the Great Depression, the company survived by sticking to its sustainable maxim, known as Soper's First Law: "When maximum profit goals appear to be in conflict with established conservation principles and sustained yield, then in all probability the profit projection needs re-examination."

The lumber and building materials industry is blessed with many effective and responsible organizations. This isn't one of them.

Now celebrating its 40th year, the Lumbermen's Information Exchange Group (L.I.E.S.) meets every Friday at a Newport Beach, Ca., watering hole to make momentous decisions such as will we all be here next Friday? and who wants what to drink?, to postpone new and old business to next Friday, moan over low lumber prices, hear the latest joke, talk sports and cars, and evaluate the attributes of the staff and customers of the restaurant. This grueling agenda is followed by lunch and (barely legal) consumption of adult

beverages.

L.I.E.S. founders include the late Sterling Wolfe of the old MarquartWolfe Lumber Co. Longtime members include Ted Gilbert. founder of Products Sales Co., Orange, Ca., who is President For Life. The other dozen or so members (no one knows for sure how many there are) are vice presidents. Even Gilbert is a vice president. The recording secretary is David Cutler. former owner of The Merchant Magazine, who reports his notes from the meetings in the late 1960s will be finished any day now.

And guests, said Cutler, have been known to include "just about any derelict that washes up on the beach."

A native of Circleville. Ks.. he moved to Twain Harte in 1946 and later acquired Sonora Lumber, which evolved into Twain Harte Lumber. He also started a concrete business next door, Twain Harte Materials.

Mr. Eby sold the lumberyard to Dave Vallelunga and Mike Rojas in 19'79 and sold the concrete company to Vallelunga in 2000.

Thomas E. "Tom" Hilton, 60, lumber salesman for Plum Creek Lumber Co., Columbia Falls, Mt., died Dec. l5 in Whitefish. Mt.

Mr. Hilton worked for Plum Creek for 2l years, retiring in January 2004.

Charlotte McEwen Gates. 86, former co-owner of 3-G Lumber Co.. Harlan, Or., died Dec. 4 in Caldwell, Id.

Mrs. Gates, her husband, Jack, and his father and brother formed 3-G Lumber in the early 1940s. The business also operated out of Wren, Or.

James Williams "Coop" Cooper, 82, long-time employee of W.E. Cooper Lumber Co., Los Angeles, Ca.. died of a stroke Dec. I in Sun City, Ca.

After returning from battles in

Saipan and Guam during World War II where he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, he joined his father's lumber company. Following his time in the family business, he went on to own his own advertising and public relations company.

Walter L. Hawk, 80, 25-year employee with Brown Lumber Co., Lamar, Co.. died Nov. l5 in Lamar.

Mr. Hawk semi-retired from Brown Lumber in 1965. but continued to work in construction, woodworking and cabinetry until 200 l.

Ronald Patrick Harrington, 44, former employee of Thompson Lumber, Oxnard, Ca., and Newton Building Materials, Saticoy, Ca., died in an auto accident Oct. 15 in Victorville. Ca.

Eugene Victor "Slim" Fletcher, 92, 26-year employee of Service Lumber, died Dec. 3 in Turlock, Ca.

Mr. Fltech worked in the shipyards in Stockton and Richmond. Ca.. during World War II.

Milo Matz Sr., 78, long-time Montana lumber worker, died Dec. I I in Monarch. Mt.

Mr. Matz worked for Merickle Lumber Mills, Wadena, Mt., from 1941 to 1953, owned and operated GMP Trucking from 1953 to 1966, and worked for Brennan Truss and Building tiom 1966 to 1973.

In 1973, he launched his own business. Matz Construction.
