Recent statistics show that in the last four yearst, this country has spent the enormous sum of SIX BILLION DOLLARS, on automobiles.

Southern Pine Association To Cooperate With Japan

- N.ry Orleans, Oct. l3-Replying today to a telegram from Sccretary of Commerce Hoover requesting assuratce from the Southern Pine Association thai pricei of Southern ,vellow pine for use in the Japanese earthquake area would not be appreciably advanced over predisaiter levels, Secretary-Manager H. C. Berckes of the -Association, reiterates the Association's offer, made to Amhassador Hanihara in Washington early last month, to place all its facilities and service at the disposa.l of Japan to assist her in dbtaining supplies oJ Southern pine needed for reconstruction work, but mentions that the Association has nothing whatever to dol with the matter or lumber prices and could not legally participate in any price fixing understanding rvith the Department of Commerce or thi Japanese government.

Secretary Berckes stated, however, that he felt confident if Japan will enter the open lumber market in the United States, she will ,be able to buy lttmber at fair prices and that there wi{l be no disposition on the part of any lumber rnanufacturers to attempt to take advantage of he misfortune of the Japanese people.
