KEEPING SNUG

Installing insulation can help reduce your energy costs, keeping your home warmer and drier. Plus it’s often an achievable DIY job. Before you begin, there are a few things to check off. • Download a copy of the New Zealand Standard NZS 4246:2016 Energy efficiency – Installing bulk thermal insulation in residential buildings. It explains the correct way to install insulation, including guidelines on safety clearances and insulation rulings around different climate zones. • Speak to the Bunnings trade desk about various products, including R values (measure of an insulation’s effectiveness) and the tools required. • Bring in a licensed electrician and plumber to check the condition of wires and pipework where Earthwool Glasswool insulation is 90mm x 430mm multi-use roll being fitted. wall and ceiling insulation, $49.83/7.74sqm, I/N: 0241538

YOUR AUTUMN TO-DO LIST It’s time to clean out your gutters! Use a safety device to hold your ladder steady, and then scoop out the leaves and debris. Before the cold winds set in, check for draughts around windows and doors and pay attention to gaps. Rake the leaves off grass 4 and paths – if they are left in the rain they can become a slip hazard. Patch up cracks in damaged concrete to prevent further damage from moisture seeping in. Spruce up your outdoors – a paint sprayer makes light work of big outdoor paint jobs. 

BY THE BOARD

Coating your timber deck will keep it looking good for the long haul, and can also help you get the finish you want

Arum Silver Silo

PRO TIP

Oil Decking oil protects and enhances a timber’s natural look. “It has a small amount of pigment, complementing the beauty of hardwoods like kwila. Oil won’t disguise the natural colour or hide the grain, perfect for this timber, which looks best with a natural finish or with a subtle colour tint,” says Brenna Mathews, Cabot’s senior brand manager.

Stain Lighter timbers, such as treated pine, can need more help to achieve the look you’re after, explains Brenna. “A stain will do the same job as oil in rejuvenating and protecting timber, but has more pigmentation, which can transform timber into the deck of your dreams,” she says.

PPG Paints ‘Weather Tough’ low sheen exterior paint in White, $79/4L, I/N: 8904862

Paint A coat of paint gives an opaque finish and can be tinted in many colours. Ensure you choose one that is designed for deck use, like PPG Paints ‘Weather Tough’ in Low Sheen. “It’s self-priming on most surfaces, including timber, is dirt shedding and contains UV shield technology,” says Tim Martin, PPG Paints channel business manager, NZ.

Assess the room Think about the function of the room and any existing features. “Consider the furniture, lighting and flooring, and look at colour schemes that will complement these,” says Paula Taylor, trend and style expert at Superfresco Easy. Master colour To help work out what hues will complement a statement wallpapered room, try using a colour wheel. This handy tool will guide you through which colours will work together in a space and which won’t. Have a plan B If you’re nervous about committing to a bold wallpaper, Paula suggests opting for a product that’s easily removed and won’t damage your walls. ‘Paste the wall’ paper peels off with ease, making it great for renters or decorating novices. Look up Contrast neutral walls with a statement wallpaper on the ceiling. Paula notes this unconventional ‘feature wall’ is becoming increasingly popular. 

LIGHT, BRIGHT & JOYOUS After a tough 2020, we could all do with a little extra cheer. PPG Paints is encouraging optimism with its ‘Chromatic Joy’ colour collection for 2021-22, which is designed to inject a sense of happiness and comfort into your home. “Chromatic Joy espouses the positivity of bright, bold colours while being anchored in lightness, making it easy to incorporate into any setting to imbue a sense of joy and a comforting containment,” says Rachel Lacy, PPG Paints chief coloursmith. The collection comprises 32 entirely new paint colours: a range of dialled-down brights and pastel tones that complement the New Zealand environment, plus nine new whites to balance out the bold.

Security detail With modern security camera technology, you can ensure the safety of your home and family from wherever you are

A

lot has changed about the way we live, but the instinct to protect the people and things we care about has stayed the same. Modern technology has made it so much easier to keep your home, family and business safe.

UNPLUGGED Taking your home’s security into your own hands has never been easier. New technology means installing security cameras could be a weekend job for a DIYer. Not only do these modern cameras connect wirelessly to your wi-fi router, but they can also be installed without an electrician – look for Swann’s ‘plug and play’ style systems that plug into a power socket, or completely wire-free models that run on a rechargeable battery.

ON WATCH Having a personal security detail might be beyond the

reach of most mere mortals, but your smart security system can offer virtually the same service. Swann’s True Detect senses heat and movement, distinguishing people, animals and cars from false triggers like tree branches or rain. The latest cameras even offer facial recognition for up to 10 people, alerting you when a friend or family member is at the door. With two-way talk, you can chat to the delivery person remotely, scare off intruders by sounding a siren or even use the spotlight camera to shine a light bright enough to scare off anyone who’s up to no good.

EAGLE EYE Suspect someone is lurking outside your home? 1080p full HD video means grainy footage is a thing of the past. Instead, you can expect to see faces, licence plates and crucial details,

like whether your visitor is carrying a parcel for delivery – or a crowbar for mischief! Infrared night vision is enhanced by the addition of a bright spotlight that gives you the full picture of what’s happening in and around your home, even after dark.

1 Swann 1080p spotlight outdoor wi-fi security camera, I/N: 0138781

2 Swann 1080p indoor wi-fi security camera, I/N: 0138782

INTERNAL AFFAIRS It’s not just external security that you want covered. Indoor security cameras can be positioned around your home to help you keep an eye on the ones you love. An indoor security camera can be used to watch over your pets while you’re at work, or even be installed in an elderly relative’s home, so you can make sure they’re safe. Smart sound alerts will send through a notification when the camera detects a sudden noise, like the sound of a breaking window or someone falling over, while two-way talk lets you check in to make sure they’re okay.

Safety tip

T

Secure the headboard with plasterboard adhesive suited to your wall type, using a spatula with dabbing technique and applying even pressure until it cures

o turn a so-so room into a stunner, all you need is paint and a little imagination. The beauty of paint is you can let your creativity run wild: go bold with colour, create shapes and patterns, and it can all be covered over if it doesn’t work out as envisioned. Get it right, though, and you’ve created an eye-catching feature that announces the space as utterly and uniquely yours. We’ve shown how you can take the feature wall concept to the floor with a painted pattern; turn a favourite colour three-dimensional using plaster; enliven a living room with intersecting shapes; and define a study zone by creating the illusion of a dado rail. Take these ideas as a starting point, put your own spin on it and have fun!

PRO TIP To coat a wall, pour paint into a wide tray, dip the roller in the paint, then lift and roll with full rotations over the tray’s platform until evenly saturated. Begin at top left of the wall and use a W motion over a metre square to evenly distribute paint

his dark but dry garage had always been used to hide household overflow, but owner (and Bunnings magazine art director) Bridie was keen to make it more functional. She wanted a studio space where she could indulge her passion for painting, as well as somewhere to store tools, exercise kit and seasonal homewares. A clear out of unwanted items, as well as a thorough paint job, provided the base for a raft of storage solutions. The best bit? Everything can be folded up or rolled away when the garage is needed for a car! 

This project, for experienced DIYers, makes a 1200mm x 700mm x 200mm wall cabinet/table. Mount 700mm from the floor. STEPS

1

To make the frame, mark a sheet of plywood widthways using a combination square, tape measure and pencil for two 700mm x 200mm pieces for the top and base of the cabinet, and two 1166mm x 200mm side pieces, cutting with a circular saw. Position the top and base against the sides and secure with 40mm screws. Tip: Pre-drill for all 40mm screws using a 3mm bit.

Widthways on the plywood, mark up and cut a 666mm x 1166mm backing board, position it inside the frame, flush with the back, securing with 40mm screws from the outside, 8mm in from the back edge. Tip: The backing board holds the frame square and provides a fixing board to mount the finished assembly to the wall.

3

From the plywood offcuts, mark up and cut three 666mm x 160mm shelves. Position them into the frame at heights to fit your equipment, then secure against the backing board with two 40mm screws, and a screw

through both sides of the frame, 50mm in from the front. Tip: The shelves are positioned flush against the backing board, leaving space at the front to allow for the closed tabletop.

4

To make the tabletop, mark up and cut the remaining sheet of plywood to 1161mm x 661mm. Centre and secure a continuous hinge against the base of the tabletop, then secure it to the cabinet, using the supplied screws. At the top edge of the tabletop, secure the double ball catch latches 150mm in from the edges using the supplied screws. Secure the housing of the double ball catches under the top of the frame 17mm back from the front and 150mm in from the sides. Tip: The tabletop is cut to fit inside the frame, minus 2.5mm clearance either side and the double ball catches hold it closed.

5

To build the support leg from the pine, mark up and cut two 661mm lengths for the top and base, and two 681mm lengths for the sides. From the 22mm dowel, cut 12 lengths of 645mm. On the side pieces, from the base, make 12 marks at 30mm intervals. At each mark, use a 22mm spade bit to drill 9mm-deep holes. Apply adhesive inside the holes, position the dowel and secure with nails. Position the top and base pieces against the sides and secure with two 40mm screws at each joint. Tip: Work on the 40mm-wide face of the pine. On the spade bit, mark 9mm up from the base of the spade (not the tip) as an indicator for the hole depth.

6

Centre and secure a continuous hinge against the top side of the support leg, then secure it to the underside of the tabletop 150mm down from the top. Smooth over all surfaces with 180-grit sandpaper, sanding over the edges and corners of the tabletop to remove splinters. Mount the cabinet with the base 700mm up from the floor. Tip: The finished support leg is 717mm high and drops to hold the tabletop flat when opened. ◆

ETHICAL CHOICE

Pot luck When you start with beautiful pots, like the Elho range, it’s easy to master the art of styling with indoor plants

O

ne of the hottest interior trends of recent years – and showing no signs of slowing – is styling with indoor plants. More is more when it comes to potted greenery, so take inspiration from these ideas – and always start with a beautiful selection of pots, like those from the Elho range.

SHAPE UP The simple lines of the Elho collection work effortlessly with all kinds of plants, from striking contemporary greenery to soft foliage spilling romantically over

the edges. The range can be mixed and matched to create a beautiful vignette; try grouping pots in a range of small, medium and large sizes. Build cohesion by displaying the same plant in each, or add variety to your pot cluster with an offbeat selection; look at mixing plants with unusual foliage, colours, differing heights or growth habits.

BE PRACTICAL Do think about where you will be positioning your plants – from a practical perspective, pots on a timber

While we’re all about good looks, doing the right thing by the environment is just as important. Elho pots offer the best of both worlds as an eco-friendly pot choice. They are made from recycled plastic waste, using 100 per cent wind energy. Plus, while they’re made to last, at the eventual end of their life, they’re 100 per cent recyclable.

table or other delicate surface will need to be watertight. Elho pots fit the bill as they are not only waterproof, but you can pop your nursery buy directly inside your Elho pot and not worry about messy overflowing saucers.

PLAY WITH COLOUR Mixing colours is easiest if you stick to a similar design or shape of pot. Elho’s range of complementary hues play beautifully together. Choose neutral shades like white and anthracite, inject some pastel fun with mint, or mix and match all of the above.

Add height to clustered pots with tall and stately plants

Creating a kitchen that looks beautiful, works well and won’t date is all in the details

B

uilding a new kitchen involves so many decisions – butler’s pantry versus walk-in, gas versus induction, location of the sink – that it can be exhausting. While practical questions of layout and workability are paramount, it’s important to also choose the right finishes – with so much time spent in the kitchen, you need to pin down a look you’ll love for the long haul. Interior designer Charlotte Minty (charlotteminty.co.nz) points out that, as most contemporary kitchens are typically open plan, they need to create flow and consistency with existing dining and living spaces. “Key to the right finish is that perfect marriage between form and function,” says Charlotte.  bunnings |

28

Starting points Flooring is a good place to begin in order to create a base palette, bearing in mind this needs to be in keeping with the rest of the house. Cabinet doors are next on the list. Charlotte Minty says, as these bear the brunt of physical treatment in a kitchen – “Every day they are opened and closed, sometimes roughly, while constantly getting bumped, splashed and splattered!” – choosing them is an important decision and one worth getting right. “Advances in design and technology allow for greater options for new kitchen doors for all budgets,” she says. “If the kitchen is a high-use space then a durable surface like a high-resistance thermoformed surface on the doors may add the best value.” Considering those surfaces that have a limited choice of colours, such as benchtops, early in the process is also a good general rule. “There are many more options in paint colours than any other materials,” says Davina. “So the paint colour selection should come at the end of your fixtures and fittings selection.”

In the mood Bringing the looks you love together is one of the most exciting and creative parts of a renovation, says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle Kitchen. “Collate inspiration, whether it be images, textures or materials, and then place them onto a visual moodboard,” she says. “This will give you a clear vision of your style and colour and will help to determine the direction, look and feel.” Browse Instagram and Pinterest, and take photos of whole rooms or elements that speak to you. Kaboodle’s 3D design software can help to visualise different configurations and colour or style options. It can also create a quick design and quote based on your style preferences and room shape. “A moodboard of a kitchen might include samples of laminate for cabinetry, stone benchtop, splashback tiles or glass, flooring, paint colour and a window covering sample,” says Dulux colour and communications manager Davina Harper. Put all your physical samples together in real life and in good light, so you can see how the colours and textures match – or don’t!

29

Plan it Dulux Woods Creek Colour choice Natural colours – both light and dark – are very much on trend for kitchens. “We have gone through the past decade of darker benches, but now you tend to see lighter to mid-tone benchtops,” says Davina. “Cabinets tend to be different shades of white or neutral as well as block colours in subtle blue or green (Hamptons style) or darker blues, greens or charcoals for a more dramatic look.” Don’t be afraid of darker hues, says Charlotte. “If you are hesitant, try limiting it to walls or an island unit in contrast with lighter cabinets or even appliances,” she says. “Darker shades applied as an accent rather than a base colour can also work. These can be used for floating shelves, bar stools, or pendant lights.” To lower the intensity of a dark kitchen she suggests introducing pale woods, light-coloured stone or splashes of white. “Contrasting dark with light offers a very compelling visual impact.”  EXPERT TIP While matte cabinetry is on trend, it can make a kitchen look dark. If you have limited natural light, a gloss finish will help the light to bounce around the space

The case for white Classic white kitchens stand the test of time for good reason, says Charlotte. “For a smaller kitchen, white provides the illusion of space. In a larger one, a predominantly white kitchen will only serve to make the space feel more open and inviting.” A white kitchen can easily be enlivened by bolder coloured accessories or appliances, or with interesting taps or hardware. “European-inspired handles and knobs in stylish finishes are being used to introduce colour contrast and materiality into the kitchen, from various shades of gold to matte black and brushed nickel,” says Briony.

The practicalities Here are our top tips for designing a kitchen that’s both good-looking and hardworking. When planning your kitchen, start with your  appliances, as the size of these will need to be accommodated efficiently. You can save on electrical and plumbing costs by  keeping the key items, such as the stove and sink, in the same place as the existing kitchen, but don’t compromise on usability just to save a few dollars. You need the kitchen to work well. A functional floor plan should be designed around  the working triangle – this is the distance between your sink, cooktop and fridge. “The most effective workspaces allow 1200mm between each of these stations,” explains Briony. A galley-style kitchen with counters on either side  of a narrow walkway, or a single-line kitchen with an island, are both space-efficient layouts. They’re ideal for small spaces, with no difficult corners to deal with.

Renovations don’t always go to plan, but patience finally paid off with this calming and cohesive bathroom

id-winter in Christchurch and, after six months, renovators Shayden and Georgia Whipps of lifestyle blog Mooch Style (moochstyle.com) were still bathing outdoors with a shower hooked up to the garden tap! A series of unforeseen setbacks meant the planned sixweek transformation of their dingy bathroom had become a six-month learning curve. “I figured it was good for your mental health, getting into a cold shower every day!” says Shayden. “But the experience means we now know what’s smart and what isn’t when planning a bathroom renovation.” Expect the unexpected Transforming the bathroom of their 1900s villa was the final step in the couple’s first reno. “It was just so cold,” recalls Shayden. “It was all poorly painted, the extractor fan would literally fall out of the ceiling and the walls were starting to swell because it didn’t extract steam properly. We’d banked on around a month and a half for the renovation.” Unfortunately, ancient hidden plumbing, along with a six-week COVID lockdown, took them on a whole new journey. 

Style tip You don’t have to be completely faithful to a particular era. The subway tiles and mirror nod to this home’s heritage, but have a modern edge

Keeping the flow Tying the bathroom in with the rest of the villa renovation was key. White walls, along with matte black detailing, link in with the rest of the house. In homage to the home’s heritage, the couple also chose period-style finishes, such as the shiplaplook wall lining behind the freestanding bath, and intricate skirting. “It’s designed to be all really cohesive,” says Shayden. Hooks from the Mondella ‘Resonance’ range in Matte Black help bring the scheme together

Surface upgrade The floor tiles were replaced with oak-style laminate, while on the walls, vertically stacked subway tiles run behind the shower and into the shower niche. The striking tile design also adds a sense of height. “We saved money by gibbing, plastering and painting all the walls ready for the tiler to come in and do the more complex job,” explains Shayden. “We were lucky that the original layout was good, which saved us money by not having to move elements around” Shayden Whipps homeowner

Natural beauty Despite the hitches, the pair say the long wait was well worth it. The bathroom has been beautifully transformed into a modern space with a touch of boho styling. “It’s all the natural, soft colours that bring in the boho – the oak flooring and polished concrete basin, the timber wall-hung vanity and engineered stone top, along with the arch-shaped mirror,” explains Shayden.

Creating order Shayden and Georgia share their top five bathroom renovation tips: Start a spreadsheet or diary and plan, plan, plan. Consider the bathroom’s decor theme, storage and its layout and be meticulous about the sizes of new fixtures. Speak to your local council before you start work, to find out what aspects of the project will need consent. Source licensed tradies for quotes on plumbing and electrical work, and have a contingency budget of $2000 – just in case. Source quality products, ensuring all are fit for purpose – for example, every item in a bathroom must be appropriate for wet areas. Always work with your different trades to coordinate and lock in their timings – this will help avoid delays to the final completion. ◆

Game of thrones There’s a lot to know (and love!) about the new breed of toilets. Here’s the lowdown on loos

C

Then comes the next step: “You will need to measure the distance from the wall or floor to the centre of that outlet pipe,” says Regan. “You must also look at where the water inlet comes into the toilet cistern, so you know the measurements of where that is currently placed on the wall.” Also consider how the toilet will fit in the space – make sure it doesn’t block access to doors or cupboards, and establish whether there is sufficient room around it (at least 600mm in front and 200mm of elbow room either side). 

hoosing a new toilet? First, be aware that toilets connect to the waste in different ways. “If you are renovating and putting a new toilet in the same position as the old one, you will need to know if your current toilet waste pipe goes out through the floor or through the wall,” says Regan Clare, business development manager for Stein. “If the plumbing goes out through the floor you need an S trap toilet pan, and if it goes out the wall you need a P trap toilet pan.” (See box over the page.)

PRO TIP

Water smart Because many New Zealand houses run off unequal water pressure, there isn’t a regulated minimum WELS (water efficiency labelling standard) rating in this country. However, a four-star WELS rating is normally considered excellent and all Bunnings toilet suites, in store and online, are WELS rated to this standard.

“Anything involving sanitary plumbing or potable water supply must be completed by a licensed plumber” Comfort is obviously an important factor, too, so don’t be embarrassed to actually sit on one in the showroom to make sure it’s what you want. Clean machine The good news is modern models are designed to make cleaning easier. While traditional toilets have a rim under the edge that tends to accumulate nasties, a rimless toilet streams water all around the inside of the whole bowl, keeping the loo cleaner with less effort from you. Beyond the pan For optimal personal hygiene, consider a bidet; these, in terms of high tech, have gone next level. The Evekare smart bidet toilet seat with wireless remote control, for instance, has four cleaning modes, an air-dryer function, soft-closing heated seat and more, while the wireless remote lets you control the water temperature and position of the spray head, plus switch between cleaning modes. Professional help For public safety reasons, the plumbing trade is licensed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) and protected under Ministry of Health guidelines, says Greg Wallace, chief executive of Master Plumbers (master plumbers.org.nz). “A toilet install involves the connection of a sanitary pipe and therefore should be completed by a licensed individual, not a DIYer,” he says. ◆

Toilet types In-wall toilets (wall hung or wall faced) have hidden cisterns and a flush button panel in the wall. Wall-hung models have no base, making them painless to clean under, while a wall-faced type is connected to the floor but is still easy to clean around. “Having an in-wall cistern means you only see the toilet pan, which gives a modern, sleek look, plus you save about 150mm of space within the bathroom,” says Regan Clare. A back-to-wall toilet is similar to wall-faced, except the cistern sits at the back of the pan. The unit sits flush against the wall and connects to the floor, making it another relatively easy-clean option. The close-coupled toilet has no gaps behind and no exposed pipes, but you’ll still have to scrub behind it. “Close-coupled toilets are the most popular type of toilet on the market as they are compact, and the cistern sits directly on the toilet pan for a clean look,” says Regan.

ake your place look loved with a fresh coat of paint. Here’s how to fix a fading facade without calling in the professionals.

Prep school Move outdoor furniture, decorations and pot plants out of the way, and use drop sheets to shield the ground and any permanent fixtures. Give surfaces a thorough clean using water and a small amount of dishwashing detergent. Sponge down weatherboards, gutters, downpipes and window frames, and use a stiff-bristled brush on masonry surfaces. Check for mould, signs of rising damp, or build-ups of white crystals (efflorescence) on brickwork. To clean, use a mixture of water and white vinegar – more concentrated chemical cleaning products may affect surfaces. Rinse off with a hose and leave to dry. 

Weatherboards in PPG Paints Chinese Porcelain

Surface matters Check for potential issues. Small areas of rot can be fixed by cutting away damaged material back to sound timber, then patching with two-part polyester filler, such as Turbo Builder’s Bog. If rot is extensive, it might be a moisture issue, and entire weatherboards may need to be replaced. If brickwork is chronically damp with large areas of mould (rather than in one or two isolated patches), you might need to call in the professionals.

Fix gaps in weatherboards using a flexible and paintable exterior filler. For masonry walls, a premixed filler, such as Selleys Spakfilla Heavy Duty, is a good choice. To test the adhesion of existing paint, cut an X into it using a utility knife, then apply masking tape and press down firmly. Peel off the tape, and if it comes away with paint stuck to it, you’ll need to strip the old layer. If your guttering has seen better days, or there are metal features you plan to paint, you’ll need to clean away rust from bare metal using a wire brush. Apply a coat of primer, choosing one suitable for metal and any other materials you need to paint. The right stuff It’s important to choose a paint and primer suitable for outdoor use. “Consider how they will handle the effects of long-term exposure to the very high UV rays we get in New Zealand, and how well the paint will maintain its look,” advises Tim Martin, channel business manager at PPG Paints. Exterior acrylic paints such as PPG Paints Weather Tough and Dulux Weathershield are formulated to adhere to both weatherboards and masonry surfaces. If previous paintwork doesn’t peel off with the masking-tape test, you’re good to paint over it after giving it a light sand. On timber features, such as door and window frames, as well as doors themselves, use a water-based enamel.

Order of the day When you’re ready to paint, start from the top and work your way down. Use a brush to paint the gutters and the board behind them (the fascia), followed by the eaves. If you’re painting masonry, whether the brickwork is rendered or exposed, use a paint sprayer or long-nap roller. In most cases, “for brickwork, no primer is required,” says Sarah Ambler-Byatt, Dulux senior brand manager. “But for best results, apply three coats for full coverage.” If your home is clad in weatherboards, a brush or small roller are the best ways to apply paint, or you could use a paint sprayer. Paint timber trim and windows last, keeping them open while you work to prevent the paint binding them shut. ◆

Safety tip

How to stay safe while working at height Position your ladder on a stable,  level, solid surface and wear sturdy footwear to stand on it. Ensure there is another person  nearby whom you can call for help if needed. Use a ladder rest or gutter clamp  instead of leaning the ladder directly on guttering. It’s crucial to have three points of  contact (for example, both feet and one hand) on the ladder at all times. Paint tins are heavy, so don’t try to  balance or hang them on ladder rungs. Using a platform ladder or scaffold is a much safer option.

Walls ready for a refresh? A pro-level job starts with a perfectly prepped surface

T

he secret to a quality paint job is in the prep. Okay, it’s not the most glamorous part of the task, but it’s one step you won’t want to skip. The work you put in beforehand will deliver you a finish to be proud of and, with help from Selleys, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. GET CLEANING Start by washing your walls. Selleys Sugar Soap cuts through grease and grime (if only all cleaning was so easy!). Put down a drop cloth to protect your precious floors and pull on some rubber gloves. Remove any nails or hooks from the wall, then use sandpaper to sand over any rough or flaky bits. Dilute some Sugar Soap in a bucket with water (as per packet instructions) and use a cloth to wash off any dirt, dust and scuff marks. Done!

2. TACKLE DINGS Don’t let dents and nail holes ruin your paint job. With a ready-to-use filler like Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, covering over the cracks is an easy job for any DIYer. Simply apply a small amount of Spakfilla Rapid to the included scraper and draw it across the hole or dent. Skim over the area in both directions a few times to push out air bubbles, then firmly draw down the surface, leaving a small amount of overfill. Allow to dry, as per pack instructions, then lightly sand smooth and brush off the dust.

3. FILL THE GAPS The last thing your beautifully painted walls need is a gappy border around every architrave, window or door frame. Selleys No More Gaps Multipurpose makes filling gaps so much easier, thanks to the easy-squeeze tube, and it’s great for getting into those awkward corners. Make sure you’re starting with a clean, dry surface – give it a wipe before you start. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze it into the gap. Use a wet

finger to smooth over the top and clean up any excess with a damp cloth. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry before painting over it with water-based paint, or allow 24-48 hours if using ceiling or oil-based paints. Now for the fun part: brushing colour on your beautifully prepped walls!

Upholstery love Leather upholstery needs to be moisturised or conditioned to stay looking its best. To prevent cracking or splitting, use a conditioning treatment roughly every two to three months; the additional benefit is that it can help to keep mould at bay, which can occur with humidity. Soft fibres in non-leather sofas and armchairs trap dirt, allergens and bacteria. Vacuum these regularly. An annual deep-clean will help ensure longevity; use a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner, along with an upholstery tool attachment, available to rent through the Bunnings Hire Shop‡.

Faultless floors Particles of dirt can cause premature wear to floors. But be careful about how you clean them and always refer to the manufacturer’s cleaning guidelines. Run a vacuum over floors at least once a week, and for laminate and wood, use a damp (not wet) microfibre mop – don’t use abrasives. Deep-clean carpets and rugs every six to 12 months, at least.

Use a tile grout cleaner or whitening product to keep your bathrooms looking fresh

Wondrous woodwork To protect, rejuvenate and enhance the natural appearance of fine timber, try a product such as Feast Watson Mastertouch Carnauba Wax, which can be applied over old coatings, meaning there’s no need to strip it back to bare timber. “The more it is polished the greater the sheen build,” says Rozanne Valcarcel, Feast Watson brand manager. “It also helps to fill in fine scratches and imperfections.”

Grimy grout Being porous, grout is great at picking up dust, dirt, oil and stains, and grubby grout really ages a bathroom or kitchen. Keeping it clean goes a long way towards keeping your tiled spaces looking sharp. “A baking soda paste left to sit for 5-10 minutes, and scrubbed with a grout brush in sections, will help clean these areas,” says Elise Warner, marketing manager at Oates. But there will be times when a specialised grout cleaning product is needed for stubborn stains and mould. Grout pens and paints are also a simple way to revive discoloured or stubbornly stained grouting. Just remember to choose the right colour to match your existing grouting. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner, $16.99/500ml, I/N: 0233154

Health at home Help stop the spread of germs and viruses*, including COVID-19, with Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner

P

rotecting against germs, bacteria and viruses has never been more important, and the task of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising your home’s surfaces is one of the first lines of defence. But not everyone understands the importance of – or difference between – the three processes. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a comprehensive and specialised three-in-one product that cleans, sanitises and disinfects. Easy to use and

*SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Vaccinia virus

effective, it’s proven to kill 99.99 per cent of germs and viruses*, including COVID-19.

CLEANING VS SANITISING VS DISINFECTING Viruses, such as COVID-19, can live on surfaces and eradicating them requires effective cleaning and disinfecting. What is the distinction between the three processes? Although cleaning removes germs and impurities from

surfaces, it doesn’t necessarily kill disease-causing organisms. Sanitisers are chemicals suitable for use on surfaces with which food for human consumption may come in contact, for the purposes of reducing pathogenic or food spoilage microorganisms to a sanitary level on such a surface. Disinfectants destroy bacteria and viruses. It’s important to read product labels on cleaning products to know which step in the process each product tackles. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner takes care of all three in one handy product.

NO HARSH CHEMICALS

Although Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a hospital-grade disinfectant, it contains no harsh chemicals or alcohols. Therefore, it does not require any PPE (personal protective equipment, such as masks or gloves) to use. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a ready-to-use formula that can be used in food areas with no need for rinsing and is even readily biodegradable, so it’s kinder on the environment. Always read the label before use.

For simple labelling with a personal touch, use a paint pen such as Empire liquid paint marker in White or Black to scribe the contents on the front. Space saver Vacuum bags will revolutionise the way you store things, says Jessica. “They’re ideal for seasonal clothes, bedding and bulky recreational gear, which you simply bag up then use your vacuum cleaner to suck out the air, reducing the contents to a third of the size for storage,” she explains. “This frees up valuable cupboard space and the sealed contents are protected from dust and mould, ready for when you need them again.”

A smart hub can be so much more than a digital photo frame!

Smart technology

W

e may not yet have flying cars, but controlling our mod cons with voice commands is today’s reality. Smart speakers like Amazon Echo bring talkative smart assistants to life, acting as virtual butlers at your beck and call. Smart home hubs obey (almost) your every command, making it easy for you to control all the smart appliances around your home. Read on for seven nifty smart home tricks.

Words Gun Arvidssen & Adam Turner. Photography Google. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

1 Home, smart home Bring your house under your complete control with our guide to home automation

Light up your life While smart bulbs and other smart devices come with their own smartphone apps, most also work with smart assistants. For example, Arlec smart bulbs work with the Grid Connect app, but you can also link them to Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa, so you don’t need your phone. If you have an Amazon Echo smart speaker on the kitchen bench you can say, “Alexa, turn on the lights”, and it’s smart enough to know you mean the kitchen lights.  Arlec 9W 806lm RGB+CCT BC B22 smart globe with Grid Connect, $24.98, I/N: 0111500 Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Remember to hire a licensed electrician to carry out any electrical works

Fix it

3 Fight the power

Smart plugs let you turn the power on and off, as well as set timers, to give practically any appliance a smart overhaul. You can ask Siri to turn on the heater before you get out of bed or automatically switch on your electric blanket on a cold night. Some smart plugs also monitor electricity usage, working with Google or Alexa to help you unmask power hogs and see how much it costs to run an appliance.

Stay cool Don’t worry if your air con split system lacks wi-fi and only has an infrared remote. An Antsig Grid Connect smart IR universal remote controller can mimic your system’s remote, acting as the middleman so you can control the air from afar. You can turn it on as you leave work, or create a routine to automatically turn it on as you approach home on a hot day.

Get into a routine Rather than rattle off a long list of commands to your various smart home devices, you can combine them into a single routine. “Alexa, good morning” might turn on the kitchen lights, dial up the heating and warm up the coffee machine. You can schedule routines or trigger them with events, such as when you arrive home or when a smart motion sensor detects someone entering the room. You can also create routines to schedule lighting scenes while you’re away on holidays.

Draw the blinds Motorised smart blinds help keep your house cool in summer and warm in winter to curb your energy bills. You can say, “Hey Siri, close the lounge room blinds” or create a routine that automatically adjusts them at a certain temperature or time of day. Routines let you use phrases like ‘sunrise’ and ‘sunset’ so your blinds adjust at the right time all year round, which helps give the house a lived-in look when you’re away.

6 Stand guard

You can keep an eye on things at home with smart cameras, which let you view footage on your smartphone while you’re out and about. Two-way audio means you can talk to whoever you can see through the camera. A smart doorbell shows you who’s on your doorstep, so you can decide whether to unlock the door and let them in by talking to Google Assistant or Alexa.

Set the scene Many smart bulbs can change colour and brightness to set a mood, which can be saved as a scene and named, for example, ‘movie night’. When Friday night rolls around, a simple voice command sets the scene for a big night in. Google It’s also handy when you’re ‘Nest’ mini in Chalk, heading out. “Many people I/N: 0172946 have an ‘I’m leaving’ scene, where everything that needs to be off when you leave the house does just that, all at once!” explains Tanya Gatti of Arlec. ◆

Walk this way Everything you need to know to turn an unkempt area into an inviting garden path

good-looking garden is never quite complete without a path, whether it guides you to the pool, meanders between flowerbeds or leads you to your home’s entrance. “A path brings you on a journey through your own outdoor environment and is, in fact, an integral part of it,” says Paul Gallagher, senior landscape architect at Mace Landscape Group (macelandscapes.co.nz). “Therefore it should offer direct, practical access within your garden as well as being an aesthetically enhancing feature in its own right.” Here’s how to create your own. }

Getting practical Pathways serve a purpose, guiding you from point A to point B, but they should also add a layer of visual interest. To choose the right style, decide why you want it. Do you need a passage from the door to the clothesline? Or do you want to draw the eye to a water feature or a breathtaking view? “Without paths, gardens can feel too open and expansive – which isn’t very inviting to meander around,” says horticulturist Chloe Thomson (@beantheredugthat). “Garden users can be left feeling lost regarding where to walk and how to move through a garden.”

“Keep plant centres back from the edge of your path, to avoid foliage draping too far over it and becoming a trip hazard” Paul Gallagher Mace Landscape Group

A winding thoroughfare of stepping stones lends a delightful sense of enchantment, and can be a more budget-friendly option than solid paving

A matter of size Size is important for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Access paths should be wide enough to walk along comfortably, but also consider what you might be manoeuvring along them, such as a wheelchair or a stroller, and plan accordingly. Paths around the garden can be narrower, but do think about whether you’ll be pushing around a wheelbarrow, and give yourself enough room to move. As a general rule, wider paths look nicer, but take a look at the proportions of your home and garden overall and aim for a harmonious effect. If your path is heading for the front door, matching the width to the door area will help to give a seamless look.

“Think about who will use the path – and how they will use it – when choosing what sort to go for” Chloe Thomson horticulturist

Photography Getty Images. •Timbers vary by region; contact your local store for further information.

Setting a style Look to your home when it comes to finding inspiration for the path’s design. “Your garden path can replicate finishes, tones or proportions inspired by your home’s exterior finishes,” says Paul Gallagher. “For example, you may want to borrow the brick finish from your front fence and add a brick border to your garden path as a complementary detail.” A contemporary building may inspire neat lines and regular, squared off edges, while a more traditional home might employ a meandering pathway with edges softened by groundcover plantings. However, contrast can often be equally effective – try using curves in the garden to help balance the sharp lines of a modern home, for example. “Crazy paving is a nice way of adding a hard-surface path without being too formal,” suggests Chloe. Pick a path The options are almost endless when it comes to your path’s building blocks. Higher-traffic walkways require a more solid surface, so need more time, effort and expense to install. For cost-effective options, Paul suggests decorative gravel or crushed limestone hoggin. “Note a gravel or hoggin finish will require suitable basecourse and edging,” he adds. Stepping stones laid in grass or ‘grouted’ with a groundcover plant make a style statement, while recycled bricks laid in a herringbone pattern offer a traditional aesthetic. For a natural appeal, use timber sleepers with a simple mulch walkway and let your thriving garden take centrestage. Bear in mind too that you can use your flooring choice to trick the eye; wide rectangular pavers can make a slender path look broader, for example. }

Even narrow spaces can become attractive walkways – here, a neat border of trimmed box and a corner vignette of succulents draw the eye Lomandra

Beautiful borders When it comes to hitting the right style note, your planting choices are key. “For a relaxed feel along your garden path, you may consider loose planting like low, ornamental grasses or plants with similar form or strappy-leafed foliage,” says Paul Gallagher. “Popular plant selections in New Zealand may include lomandra, flowering species like miniature agapanthus or lavender, and native groundcovers like coprosma, creeping pohuehue or panakenake.” Surrounding stepping stones or timber sleepers with pebbles will create a floating effect, while a hardwood border can be helpful for keeping things tidy and contained in smaller spaces, especially alongside a gravel path. “There are plenty of edging material options, from hardwood timber lengths, to recycled plastic flexible lengths or lovely rusted steel edging pieces,” says Chloe Thomson. “But not all paths need a formally defined border – go with what suits your garden design and style.” A border isn’t the only thing to help guide the way. Simple solar lights are an easy low-tech lighting solution, or try smart LED spotlights, installed by a licensed electrician, that can be controlled via an app on your smartphone. ◆

Prepare to prune Have your secateurs, shears and loppers at the ready – it’s time to trim and tidy in the garden

A

utumn is a busy season in the pruning calendar, and a good snip back now will help plants stay strong and healthy. Here’s what will require a reshape before winter sets in.

Words Jane Wrigglesworth. Photography (shrubs, top) Alamy Stock Photo, Getty Images. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

EXPERT TIP Clean your tools between jobs to prevent diseases spreading from plant to plant. If a tree is noticeably diseased, sterilise your tools between cuts. Dip your pruning tools in a 10 per cent bleach solution or wipe the blades with a methylated spirits-soaked rag

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Tip Prune stems just above the node at a 45º angle

Herbaceous perennials Herbaceous perennials are nonwoody plants that die down in winter and grow again in spring. Their roots remain alive over the colder months and send up new shoots as the weather heats up. Herbaceous plants include alstroemerias, echinaceas, delphiniums, peonies and salvias. Once flowering has finished and foliage begins to turn brown, use secateurs to remove dead or browning stems and foliage. Cut right back to the plant’s base. Mediterranean shrubs Lavender, rosemary and cistus benefit from an annual prune to keep them compact. Plants left unpruned can become ‘leggy’, producing fewer flowers and sparser foliage at the base. Use secateurs to cut plants back by one-third in early autumn. Plants won’t reflower if cut back into old wood.

Woody shrubs and evergreen trees Prune shrubs and trees in early autumn to ensure the new growth has time to harden off before winter. “Loppers are more powerful than pruners and more accurate than saws, so are ideal for cutting larger branches,” says Bruce Underwood, NZ sales manager for Fiskars. “Trees recover more quickly from larger cuts when they are smooth and clean cut and don’t damage the branch collar, or the ‘shoulder’ branch and the trunk.” If a tree’s branch is large, remove the bulk of the branch first and then cut closer to the trunk. “If you cut close to the trunk from the start and the branch falls, it can damage the tree,” says Bruce. “To cut the remaining part of the branch, cut downwards at a slight outward angle, about 2cm away from the trunk.” }

Blackberries Cultivated blackberry varieties like the thornless ‘Navaho’ and ‘Black Satin’ produce fruit each summer on the new canes that grew after the previous summer’s harvest. “The canes which have produced a crop will die off and should be pruned off at ground level immediately after harvest or in the autumn,” says Kate. “The new canes can be tip pruned in spring to encourage branching and more berry production.”

Lightly cutting back blueberry bushes can lead to new growth, on which the fruits form

Blueberries Blueberry plants need very little pruning, but they will benefit from a quick trim to shape and a thinning out when growth becomes thick and congested. “Pruning of blueberry plants is best done in autumn or winter during a dry spell of weather,” says Kate Marshall of Waimea Nurseries. bunnings.co.nz |

bunningsnz |

Raspberries Autumn-fruiting raspberry varieties like ‘Heritage’ are the easiest to prune, as all of the canes should be pruned to ground level after fruiting each autumn or winter, says Kate. “Summer-bearing varieties like ‘Waiau’ need selective pruning to remove older canes (also done in autumn or winter), which are identified as being thicker and usually have grey-brown bark compared to the green-brown bark of new canes.”

bunnings

Stonefruit trees Pruning is best done after fruiting in late summer or autumn to avoid the risk of bacterial blast (a disease that causes weeping sap), which is more prominent in winter. Prune on a dry day. “Prune to an open vase shape and remove any dead, diseased or damaged wood,” says Kate. “I would also suggest a pruning paint.” ◆

Cutting-edge maintenance Secateurs, shears and loppers work best when sharp; a sharp blade will cut cleanly through stems and branches without damaging them. If your tools are blunt, use a sharpening stone or a secateur and lopper sharpener to return them to top condition. Trojan 25mm x 50mm x 200mm steel tool sharpening stone, $12.98, I/N: 5760314

Hedges Prune hedges in early autumn. For smaller hedges, use shears for precise cuts, and keep the shears parallel to the hedge when snipping. Trim from the bottom up so that the clippings fall cleanly to the ground. Large hedges should be wider at the bottom and tapered at the top to allow light to reach the base of the hedge. If light is blocked at the base, the foliage may die off. A powered hedge trimmer is ideal for large hedges.

Many vinyl and laminate planks convincingly mimic real timber, and can even be laid in a herringbone pattern

f daggy flooring is letting down the side, raising your interiors game might be easier than you think. For a more complete resolution than simply adding a rug, there are many quick-fix DIY solutions to choose from in vinyl and laminate. “Vinyl planks and tiles come in a great variety of colours, patterns and timber looks, and can create a classy and budget-friendly solution for everybody, even renters,” says interior designer Martina Hayes. “It’s a great way to add your own personality and a pop of colour.”

Get the look “The wide selection of designs, price points, finish and method of installation means there is a vinyl flooring option for everyone,” says Denise Retallick from Gerflor. “Light-coloured, ultrarealistic timbers, such as oak in blond or grey tones, are trending right now. These have the look and feel of real timber without the expense, high maintenance and gaps of solid timber floors.” Love the chequerboard look? There’s a vinyl tile for that, while hybrid options include tiles made to look like concrete or stone. Pros and cons An appealing aspect of vinyl flooring for the DIYer is that it often does not need underlay. “The surface you lay it over just needs to be stable, level and sealed against moisture,” says Denise. It’s easy on your wallet, long-lasting and comfortable underfoot. For renters, peel and stick vinyl is a fantastic option. “The removable adhesive leaves little or no residue, making it easy to replace or remove,” explains Martina. Preparation, as always, is the key to success. “If laying peel and stick over tiles, fill the grout crevices using self-levelling compound, so the new floor doesn’t take on the profile of the tiles underneath,” says Denise.

Senso ‘Urban’ 914mm x 152mm x 2mm self-adhesive vinyl planks in Whitetech, $60.95/pack of 16 (2.20sqm, $27.70/sqm), I/N: 6600075

Vinyl is waterproof when properly laid, the only downside being it shouldn’t be installed in a shower. On the other hand, laminate – with a fibreboard and resin core – is only water-resistant, so is not recommended for wet areas. A better alternative is hybrid flooring, which has a waterproof core. Easy does it “Vinyl is often one of the first DIY flooring projects completed by those who are upgrading a room,” says Denise. “You can even move furniture around as you work, because the peel and stick tiles can be walked on straightaway.” Trimming vinyl tiles or planks to fit can be done with a score and snap method using a utility knife (see our story on the following page for a step-by-step guide to laying vinyl planks). Laminate and some vinyl planks use an interlocking system that clicks into place and can be laid over existing flooring, provided it’s smooth and level. The trickiest part with laminate is cutting the boards to fit – you’ll need a handsaw or circular saw – but nevertheless it’s a simple way to give your room a whole new look in as little as a weekend. ◆

inyl planks give the look of real timber on a budget, and laying them is a straightforward DIY job. Selfadhesive ‘peel and stick’ planks are as easy to install as they sound, while interlocking versions, like the ones used here, simply click into place. If you’re renting, they can be removed without damaging the existing floor. Measure the area to be covered, multiply the width by the length, then round up the required boxes to allow for wastage. Working from left to right, set out the first row of planks with the flat side against the wall and the tongue facing out. Each plank must lock into another plank at both ends, except at the ends of the rows. Tip: To fit around power points or heating vents, measure and mark them on the vinyl plank and cut with a sharp utility knife.

2

3

4

5

Before securing the planks, always position 5mm spacers along the wall to create expansion gaps. Lay planks end-to-end, tapping with a rubber mallet across the join to click them together. Tip: Changing temperature and humidity in the room makes the flooring expand or contract slightly. The gap allows for this to prevent bowing or cupping.

To install the second row, start with a cut piece at least 300mm long and position a spacer against the wall. With the tongue side facing out, hold the plank lengthwise at 30°, then drop it and click into place with the mallet. Repeat to lay the remaining rows, staggering long and short pieces to ensure the end joins of the rows are more than 200mm apart. Tip: Use a tapping block and mallet to check each row is locked before laying the next.

To trim the last plank of the row, measure out the length, allowing 5mm against the wall, then use a combination square to score across the plank with the knife at a right angle to slice through the top layer of the vinyl. Hold the plank on both sides to snap. Tip: Set out the rows to avoid wastage of offcuts less than 300mm.

If the last row needs to be cut lengthwise, position the boards upside-down with the flat side against the wall to mark the width of the gap, then cut and tap into place. Remove the spacers and install skirting boards to cover the expansion gaps. ◆

Use a mini roller to paint the design in stages, beginning with the lightest colours and finishing with the darkest. Apply two coats of each, leaving to dry thoroughly after each. Tip: Roll over the shape, taking the paint onto the tape for a smooth edge.

British Paints Perfect Timing

Mark the design on the wall with a pencil, using a level for straight lines. For circles and curves, tie nylon cord to a pencil, measure the length of the radius along the cord and hold this point on the centre of the circle with your thumb, then pull it taut to mark the curve. Tip: Mark smaller circles with a compass.

After the second coat of each colour, remove the tape before it dries, pulling it away from the wall at 45°, scrunching as you go to avoid brushing the wall with wet paint. Remove any visible pencil lines with an eraser. Tip: Wait for each colour to dry thoroughly before taping over it to paint the adjacent section.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

Safety equipment (eye  protection, mask and gloves)  230mm roller with tray  175mm pointing trowel  Soft broom  12mm-nap 130mm roller  120-grit abrasive paper  Cloth  Primer P remixed plaster filler (we used GIB ‘Plus 4’ jointing compound) 450mm x 250mm plywood  offcut W all paint (we used PPG Paints ‘Easy Coat’ low sheen interior paint in Gold Chateau)

Draw a grid of the tiled area and sketch out the design, using fully coloured square tiles and semicircles the same width as tiles. Tip: Make a circle by drawing adjacent semicircles. Make pill shapes by drawing semicircles either side of the square tiles. To make the semicircle template for 300mm-square tiles, along one side of the cardboard, mark a 300mm line 50mm in and mark the centre point (150mm along the line). Tie nylon cord to a pencil, measure 150mm along and hold this point against the centre of the line with your thumb. Pull it taut to mark the semicircle with the pencil, then cut shape out with scissors. Thoroughly scrub tiles with sugar soap and a stiff-bristled brush, rinse, leave to dry and repeat this process at least twice (paint will not adhere to greasy or dirty surfaces). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to further prepare tiles as necessary, for example fill any cracks or holes with epoxy putty, sand glossy or semi-gloss finishes, clean with mould killer and remove silicone sealant. Follow the grid sketch

to position the template on the tiles, marking semicircles with a pencil and using an X to mark tiles that are to be fully painted. Prepare primer as per manufacturer’s instructions (see label). Apply primer with a 4mm-nap 100mm wide microfibre roller and cut in with a 38-50mm angled cutter brush. Apply at least two coats, leaving eight hours between each coat. Prepare topcoat as per manufacturer’s instructions (see label). Apply topcoat to the tiles as in step 4. Work on one colour at a time, rinsing and drying the roller and brush between each coat. Once each section is coated, gently go over the surface in the same direction with an unloaded roller using minimal pressure. This will give a smooth consistent finish. Leave first coat to dry for at least eight hours before applying second coat. The floor can be used for light foot traffic after two days, but for best results leave it to cure for a week. Note: To prevent damage to your painted tiled floor (or any floor), avoid dragging furniture over it.

Lightly smooth over the surface with 120-grit abrasive paper to remove loose plaster and prevent flaking. Leave to cure for 48 hours, then wipe with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust. Apply primer over the surface and around the edges with a roller and leave to dry.

Apply two coats of paint, over the surface and around the edges, leaving to dry after each. Enlist a second pair of hands to position the headboard against the wall and attach (see page 14). Tip: For a professional finish, cut 18mm x 18mm moulding to fit around the bedhead, butting at the corners and securing with construction adhesive.

•Timbers vary by region; contact your local store for further information.

Plaster was used to create a feature headboard for a bed; the same technique could be used on a full plasterboard wall.

STONE-EFFECT WALL

PRO TIP

Use paint to create the illusion of different surfaces and materials for a room packed with personality. Contrast a textured stone effect along the top half of the wall, then pack a punch with colour-blocking around the bottom half. This works for small spaces with plasterboard walls and makes a home study an inspiring room to work in.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

Safety equipment (mask  and gloves)  Drop sheet  Paint stirrer  50mm angle cutter brush Roller with extension pole  and tray Monarch ‘Effects’ 120mm  paintbrush  Gap filler  180-grit abrasive paper  Sugar soap wipes  Painter’s tape Primer (we used British  Paints ‘4 in 1 Prep’ water based primer sealer undercoat in White) Stone-effect paint  (we used Dulux ‘Stone Effect’ design paint tinted in Dreamstone White) Wall paint (we used Dulux  ‘Wash & Wear’ low sheen paint tinted in Ocean View Beach)

When buying paint to tint in your chosen colour, there are a variety of bases which can be used. These work with differing ranges of colour. The experts at the Paint Desk can advise which base is suitable for your colour choice

1

Set out a drop sheet to protect the floor, then prepare the walls by filling scratches and dents with gap filler and leaving to dry. Smooth over the wall with 180-grit abrasive paper, removing excess filler and sanding away any marks. Clean the wall with sugar soap wipes, removing dust and grime. Mask over skirting boards and trim to apply primer, cutting into corners with a 50mm angled brush, then using the roller to coat the wall, leaving to dry. Use painter’s tape to mask around the area for the textured stone-effect finish, running the roll over the tape to ensure it adheres to the wall. Mix the stone-effect paint with a stirrer to evenly distribute the particles and pour into a tray. Apply the first coat with a medium-nap roller, leaving to dry. Working in half-metre sections, apply the second coat with the roller. While it’s still wet, use a 120mm brush in random, overlapping strokes to texturise the wall. Remove the tape and leave to dry. Use painter’s tape to mask along the base of the textured area of the wall, along skirting boards and trim. Apply two coats of paint with a roller, leaving to dry after each coat. ◆

Plant pick

Seasonal stars Gift yourself a spring surprise of beautiful blooms by planting some bulbs in autumn

Tip When storing bulbs in the fridge, be sure to label them to avoid them being mixed up with your veges!

Anemone Great value for money, anemones have an exceptionally long flowering season (from late winter through to late spring), come in a range of beautiful colours and have a long vase life. To break dormancy and encourage germination and good flower production, place bulbs in the fridge for six weeks prior to planting. Freesia A quintessential spring bulb, freesias are one of the most valued for scent. They naturalise well and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Plant in well-worked, free-draining soil 5-6cm deep and 8-10cm apart. In cooler areas, protect from frost.

Anemone (Anemone coronaria)

Freesia (Freesia x hybrida)

Plant in full sun in free-draining soil. Feed regularly and your plant could produce up to 20 flowers per bulb.

Pick stems for the vase when the first bud has opened – they can last for up to 10 days as the florets continue to open.

Ranunculus

Crocus

Crocus Flowers in mauve, lavender and yellow appear on short stems from as early as midwinter. Plant in sun – under deciduous trees is fine as their stems will still be bare when the plants are in bloom. Crocuses are not fussy about soil type but it must be free-draining. Water regularly when in flower. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants

(Ranunculus asiaticus)

Plant in full sun and feed regularly during the growing season. Cut flowers usually last a week or two.

(Crocus spp.)

These bowl-shaped beauties are one of the first flowers of spring. They are low-growing perennials, ideal for pots.

Ranunculus One of the best cut flowers, with multi-petalled blooms in a variety of colours including white, red, pink, yellow and orange. It looks fabulous planted as a clumped mix in pots or flowerbeds – for this reason, you will often find them sold as a mixed collection. They can grow 40-60cm tall, but dwarf specimens only reach about 20cm.
