Matt Alderton Owning your own business is an adventure and can be very rewarding. As an owner of businesses both large and small, I understand the many challenges business owners have in every aspect of operating their business. I have been a business owner for over a decade, and have experienced many ups and downs and have learned an incredible amount by the experience. One thing above all that I have taken away from my journey so far, is that you can’t do it alone. To be successful requires being around the right people, and having the right influences in your life to help you achieve success. This applies to all the relationships in our lives. As human beings, we are the average of the seven people we spend the most amount of time with. This means, if we want to be successful, we need to spend time with people who are successful, who have had more success than we have had to date, and learn from them. As I have built my various businesses, I have spent time around some incredible people. People such as John Maxwell, Terry Hawkins and Les Brown, as well as many experts across various fields and industries. I can directly link my successes and failures to the people and influence they have had on my business and life. I started my business Bx, to help business owners connect with experts within the business arena. Knowing firsthand the advantages in being connected with and mentoring with the right people, I knew this was pivotal to the success of other business owners as well. In Australia, the majority of small businesses, don’t even make it to five years. This is a disturbing statistic. What is even more disturbing, is that it is usually a result of the business owner not having the experience, expertise and support required to be successful in their enterprise. My personal mission is to reverse this statistic. I have created a support system for business owners, to enable them to achieve success. How to Network Without the Icky Factor Does the idea of “Networking” conjure visions of eating bad canapés and lurching from one uncomfortable and superficial conversation to the next? Have you ever attended a “Networking” event and felt like everyone was just in a big race to see who could hand out the most business cards first? I have. And that is just plain “Icky.” In fact, a scientific study recently featured in the Harvard Business Review has proven that professional networking actually makes people feel dirty. Yep, seriously… it makes people feel physically dirty – like they want to take a shower afterwards! Researchers suggest this is because we generally think about morality in terms of cleanliness and most of the time, professional networking feels very “contrived” and it increases people’s feelings of inauthenticity and immorality (hence the whole “feeling dirty” thing). That’s why, even though we HerBusiness gives members loads of opportunities to connect with others – we are definitely NOT about that kind of “Icky” Networking. We showed that kind of networking the door years ago. What the same study DID find is that Networking had a positive association with job performance. That means, whilst it can be great for your business in terms of winning new business, making useful connections and expanding your reach, most of the time you’re going to feel pretty uncomfortable with it. So, how can you get all the benefits of networking without the “icky-ness” factor? Look for organisations that offer alternatives. Instead of hyped up, short term meet and greets, seek out interactions that have depth, authenticity and a good dose of practical advice and humour thrown in.
You’ll be creating relevant and vibrant connections with other business owners who will be good for your business – either as valued clients, suppliers or cheerleaders. I like to think of the word network means “ support team”. Look for networks low on “Icky” and high on real conversations, solid advice and whole-hearted support. I like the way that Corryn Barakat of Milk and Love explained a meeting that she really liked... “It’s the most grounding and invigorating forum I’ve attended as a Small Business Owner. All of the attendees provided useful points of view I hadn’t previously considered, and the size of the session means it felt intimate – like a group of your best friends getting together over coffee!” So, look for a community where you can get real, valuable support from like-minded business owners. Prepare for Automation: Your Check List Below is the checklist for you to start preparing your business for automation. It will help you to guide your thought process on whether automation is really the right choice for your business and how to get ready for it. Use the list to ask yourself some questions and write down the answers so when you talk to your team (internal or external) you are clear on what you want to do. • Review your target market and customer avatar Start by getting clear on the target market of your business. Who is your ideal customer? What do they care about? Where do they “hang out?” Defining your target marketing goes hand in hand with developing your customer avatar, a detailed definition of your ideal customer, down to the specific name, picture, age 8 | Busines xclusive
and other attributes. A customer avatar is a combination of characteristics of many real people, not just one person, and its description should be as specific and thorough as possible. Collate your marketing strategy, lead magnets and other collateral used for your lead generation When considering your current marketing strategy and approach, it is helpful to focus on how you are attracting leads. How are you capturing leads, for example through lead magnets, and how you are nurturing them through to the next step in the sales cycle? This is not the time to create a brand new strategy, now is the time to look at what you are doing and collate it all together so you have a starting point to build from. • Define your sales pipeline stages and cycle Here we suggest to review your current sales pipeline as well as sales activities and communications at each step of the sales process. Do you have your sales stages clearly defined? Are you giving the prospect the best possible buying
experience? Do you know what the average sales cycle time is to close leads? Are you clear about your sales metrics and KPIs and how you track and report on them? • Prepare and add value to your data
effort you invest in this activity the more benefits you will be able to reap by identifying and removing constraints in your business. At the same time you are creating a powerful foundation for automation.
This is all about your database. Your data is a key asset and the backbone of your business while at the same time a critical cornerstone for effective marketing and business automation. Have you considered whether you can download your database from your current system? Is it in Excel, or do you have data in multiple systems?
What are your core processes along your ideal client lifecycle? What are the administrational processes that support your business? Are there any major bottlenecks in the process flow that hold your business back from peak performance? What are the repetitive activities can be done by a system and save value time and money?
Once that data is consolidated in one place, you can take the next step and start to clean it up. Think about what information you would like to keep from historical activities and what data is important for future customer communication as well as internal activities.
• Brainstorm your implementation milestones and plan
• Get clear on your current & ideal segmentation Segmentation is so valuable for any small business because it makes sure that you do not waste time and money for sales and marketing on customers with no buying potential. Also, it’s the most considerate thing you can do for your leads, as you’re showing them that their time is valuable. As a result, dividing up and segmenting your customers and leads is a great way to add value to your business. Helpful criteria to consider while assessing and segmenting your leads are: complexity of customer need or no need, budget, age, product / service interest, geography etc. • Document your operational & administrative business processes
This point is all about project planning, execution and managing everyone that would be involved in it, be it internal or external. Introducing marketing and business automation in your business is more than just the implementation of a new software system. In many ways it is a transformation of your business and touches many areas and people. It is a good idea to start mapping out key milestones and timelines of the system implementation early as it will help you to focus on the right actions at the right time. What internal and external communication is required to make the change for your customers and staff as smooth as possible? • Final question for you to think about ... Why are you actually considering to introduce automation in your business? What key problems or challenges would you like to overcome? What is this all for? Are You Charging What You’re Worth? We’ve all been there. Either starting a business or up-levelling and it’s time to decide what to charge for your services. So how do you know you’re charging what you’re worth? Many business owners base their charges on what their competitors are charging but that’s the worst thing you can do because, guess what – the majority of business owners are undercharging. Just like you, they probably started out looking at what others were charging and set their fees accordingly. The reality is, charging what you’re worth has more to do with your money mindset than market forces. The value you place on yourself and the services you deliver will have the biggest influence on what you are ultimately comfortable charging. Truth is, the only limiter is you. In modern western society at least, money is essential and it’s a mirror of how you’re showing up in the world. Money is tangible and measurable and whether you’re experiencing lack or plenty has a lot to do with your money mindset. What is money mindset? Money mindset is made up of a mix of elements so it’s not just one thing. It’s actually an alchemy of these 6 elements that together create your mindset around money. 1. Your sense of identity and your relationship with money 2. Your belief about money in your business 3. How you value your time which impacts how you spend your time
Fact is, it’s not the thoughts from your conscious mind that’s creating the emotions you feel. It’s your subconscious that’s running the show. It’s in your subconscious mind that your beliefs, both positive and negative are lurking.

As can be seen from this diagram the subconscious mind has no ability to reject thoughts, images or ideas, it can only accept and gets conditioned from a very young age. So, your beliefs about money (and many other life issues) belong to somebody else. You’ve simply accepted them as true.

Simply put, your money mindset is how you think and feel about money and your relationship with it. How is money mindset formed? Did you know that some neuroscientists, such as Michael S. Gazzaniga a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and head of the new SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind, estimate that as much as 98 percent or more of all brain activity is completely unconscious?
The good news is that your current money mindset comes from the thoughts and beliefs you held in the past. You are not stuck with them. Change your thoughts and you will change your feelings which in turn will change your actions and therefore your results going forward. NAOMI SIMSON: THE BONES YOU NEED TO GROW A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS Armed with $25,000 in family savings, a laptop and one employee – her dog - Naomi Simson started her business, RedBalloon on the 1st of April 2001. Starting a business on April Fools’ Day might seem like a bad idea, but it was the least of Naomi’s worries in the months that followed. By October, the odds were firmly against her. With the dot-com crash and the 9/11 tragedy still very fresh, consumers weren’t ready for good times but that was exactly what Naomi was trying to sell. Naomi found herself saying, “No customers today, maybe tomorrow…” over and over again. By the time she made her first sale a few months later, she had begun to learn that hope, by itself, was not an effective strategy for growing a business. She also discovered that growing a business wasn’t even about money or resources and advertising; it was all about time, how she chose to use it and the relationships she fostered along the way. Business is all about relationships When Naomi stepped up to the stage at BxPonential last year, she reminded us that, “more than anything in this century, we want to trust who we do business with, whether we’re consumers or in our businesses.” Our customers trust the promises we make them so it’s important to think deeply about the promises you are making in your business. Not only is it crucial to consider why your customers should trust you, Naomi also encourages us all to ask “what does the customer think?” at every step along the way. Even though people are the biggest challenge in small business, they are what keeps you moving forward and they’re essential – you can’t do everything on your own, forever. “You have to bring people with you and you want them to be as passionate about your journey as you are.”
At the end of the day, all of our businesses and workplaces are different, “your workplace isn’t mine – it’s yours! We all do it our way, what works for us and we align our people to that.”
Disengagement is costing the Australian economy billions of dollars in lost productivity every year but it is avoidable. Perhaps the clearest piece of advice that Naomi gave was something that she said at her son’s year 12 dinner. She reminded them that there were three things everyone needed to get through life, whether they were going to be business owners or not. A wishbone – the dream, passion and aspirations to drive you forward; a backbone – resilience, persistence, courage and follow through; and a funny bone – “because if you’re not having a laugh, what’s the point?”
Her advice? It comes down to the bare essentials. When your team asks themselves these questions, their answers can help you to know which areas you should focus on as you manage them everyday. Belonging – “Do I feel like I belong? Do I connect? Am I part of something bigger than myself? We all want to belong to something.” Naomi knows that when team members feel as though they belong to the business journey, they are more likely to engage themselves and get the job done, smashing expectations as they go. hysical health – Naomi encourages her team to P get active, whether it’s going on a walk at lunch or participating in a challenge like Steptember, they all encourage each other to stay healthy in any way that they can.
The bare bones of small business
So how do you create a business that you love? One that you own and it doesn’t own you? “It all comes from how you are as a leader. I want to remind you that your most precious resource is your time and the second most precious resource is how you recognise the people around you.”
Brain food – it’s always important to keep learning, but it doesn’t always have to cost a packet. Watching Ted Talks together at lunch time or simply showing a fellow a team member a new way to perform a task – whichever way you choose to go about it, make sure you and your team are always learning something, big or small. ecognition – “Am I noticed? Am I recognised? Do R I know what I’m here to do? Did anyone notice and do I go home feeling like a winner?” It’s one thing for your team to do a great job, but if no one encourages them and celebrates their successes, it can be easy for them to become discouraged and disengaged. Keep focusing on the wins and always keep an eye out for the great work that your team does so you can make them feel valued – “because you want your people to keep showing up over and over again and playing full out.”
