As an owner of businesses both large and small, I understand the many challenges business owners have in every aspect of operating their business. I have been a business owner for over a decade, and have experienced many ups and downs and have learned an incredible amount by the experience. One thing above all that I have taken away from my journey so far, is that you can’t do it alone. To be successful requires being around the right people, and having the right influences in your life to help you achieve success. This applies to all the relationships in our lives. As human beings, we are the average of the seven people we spend the most amount of time with. This means, if we want to be successful, we need to spend time with people who are successful, who have had more success than we have had to date, and learn from them. As I have built my various businesses, I have spent time around some incredible people. People such as John Maxwell, Terry Hawkins and Les Brown, as well as many experts across various fields and industries. I can directly link my successes and failures to the people and influence they have had on my business and life. I started my business Bx, to help business owners connect with experts within the business arena. Knowing first-hand the advantages in being connected with and mentoring with the right people, I knew this was pivotal to the success of other business owners as well. In Australia, the majority of small businesses, don’t even make it to five years. This is a disturbing statistic. What is even more disturbing, is that it is usually a result of the business owner not having the experience, expertise and support required to be successful in their enterprise. My personal mission is to reverse this statistic. I have created a support system for business owners, to enable them to achieve success. I have done this through our free events - Bxponential, One Day Business Masterclass, Bxplosive, through our Business for Life Program and through our national business networking breakfasts, lunches and dinners with BxNetworking. 5 Tips to Boost Your Networking Know-How - Matt Alderton Before I dive into the power of business networking, let me explain what networking is not: walking into a room of business owners, darting from person to person, giving away as many of your business cards as possible, gathering up as many as possible, returning to your office, then adding them all to your email newsletter list, firing off a generic newsletter and expecting a sale immediately. In metaphorical terms, that sort of networking is like piling your plate at the local ‘all you can eat’ buffet and not stopping to savour the food. Networking is not about the number of business cards you gather, but the relationships you build. It is not how fast you can free yourself from the person you deem an unsuitable ‘lead’ for your business - but how fast you can discover how to help them. Great business networking is not measured by the dollar delivered to your business, but by the number of relationships you help others create. I attend numerous different networking events every week. It is a critical part of our sales process and more than 35% of our clients come from networking events. As an active member of Bxnetworking, BNI, the local Chamber of Commerce and the NSW Business Chamber, I consider networking to be critical to building a successful network. 6 | Busines xclusive
Here are my top four reasons to network: 1. You increase your exposure to other people like yourself, with varying levels of experience and who all share a desire to help each other. 2. Referral sources are a significant lead generation source for most businesses. 3. You will build strong relationships with people you know, like and trust, who you will be able to rely on for advice on many areas of business, and where to go to get support and refer suppliers for your business. 4. It’s great to get out of your business and work on it, rather than in it, and networking is generally a great social tool. Here are my top 5 networking tips: 1. Work the room - we often get in our comfort zone and hang around the same people. In a networking environment we need to do the opposite. Meet and talk to as many people as you can. 2. You are not in a networking environment to just swap business cards - you need to build relationships. 3. The people in the room are not your leads. Often I see people work the room like everyone there needs to do business with them. The problem is that this is very limited thinking. Instead, build the relationship by following up the initial meeting with a coffee chat. As you learn more about the other person’s business, think how you can refer them to people you know. In turn, they will hopefully do the same. The power of networking is not as much about the person you are meeting as it is the many people they already know and network with.
4. Have every business card saved in your contacts, connect with the contact on LinkedIn AND, most importantly, remember their name next time you meet. 5. Be on FORM - it’s a great acronym to remind you of ice-breaker questions when you meet people. F = Family (where are you from, are you married, kids, their ages?) O = Occupation (what kind of work do you do, how did you get into it? do you enjoy it?) R = Recreation (what do you do for fun, hobbies?) M = Message (move from the informal to the formal, setting up a coffee chat, working out how you can work together). Networking is a vital element of your marketing mix - not the only element but an important one. I also suggest splitting it into hard, soft and social. Hard networking is structured with expected referral outcomes, as in a group like BNI. Soft networking is excellent for brand and relationship building yet without the targeted expectation of referrals. The Real Business Group offers this type of model, as do Chambers of Commerce and State Business Chambers. Social is networking though social media groups that are built online according to business interests - these can include LinkedIn groups, or MeetUp groups. What networking has worked for you? “What do you mean ‘should’?” Good question. If you’re in business you’ve at least heard about automation… and how important it is to your freedom (and sanity). In this article, I’m going to show you ways to leverage your time and results by automating some of the work you shouldn’t be doing, but your business should. Before we begin, an important note to give you context for the article: As you probably know, each customer has a lifecycle in your business. Infusionsoft calls this Lifecycle Marketing. And the longer this lifecycle, the more your customers are worth, the bigger your business, therefore the more stable and fast-growing your income.
Let’s break it down into 3 sections: 1. Attract (the 1st connection with you, as they’re getting to know us)
Nothing feels better to us than a sense we belong. It’s hardwired into the primitive core of our human brains and triggers the psychological switches that make us more likely to say YES. Think about when you go round to a friends’ house and the woman (or man!) who’s put her heart and soul into making a beautiful home, says hi and welcomes you. 3. A Simple “How are you?” email a couple days after they’ve joined you This one’s off the ‘direct response’ radar, which means no one else is teaching it so most businesses don’t do it (unless they’re savvy and innovative) which means huge opportunity for you. It sets you above (and apart) from other businesses simply by allowing you to be human. You may find it tough to write something like this if you’re used to writing more ‘traditional’ direct marketing emails. 5 SIMPLE WAYS To Generate Referrals In The Next 30 Days - Michael Griffiths
As a business owner, the last thing you want to be spending most your time on is finding new prospects and leads to convert. Sure, you can use Facebook Ads, AdWords, SEO and the traditional forms of marketing, but if you don’t get the quality in your leads or convert them at a high percentage that can become costly. So how do you get high quality leads, leads that are easy to convert and that the prospect is already ready to get started with you. Simply put ‘High Quality Referrals.’ 97% of us don’t have a referral plan. We hope that someone talks about us to their networks and that all the ducks fall into line and somehow that magically referral lands on your lap. What if we did have a plan, we did take control and we took small action steps each day that ensured we got passed referrals each day like clockwork. What would 30 qualified referrals per month do for your business? Let’s look at the 5 things you should be doing if you want to build your business through getting referrals every day. First you need to build your own referral teams. Most people turn up to referral groups or networking events hoping to meet someone that might can give them business. Rather than hoping you meet the right person, why not build a team around you that can give you referrals. We break our referral teams down into 5 categories: 1. Profitability Partners who you have a weekly 10 minute conversation with. 2. Super Groups who you get together once a month for 45 minutes with. 3. Cross Promotion Partners who promote you into their network and you promote them into yours. 4. Content Distributors who share your social content into new networks for you to leverage new contacts. 14 | Busines xclusive
5. Affiliates who are wanting to sell your products and services for you. In total, we have a team of 66 people on our referral team. That is 66 people who are out there every day creating new opportunities for you, giving you more exposure and allowing you to leverage into new networks. Just imagine if each person just found 1 opportunity a month for you. That’s 66 new opportunities that you haven’t paid a cent for in marketing. The second thing we can do is use our networks more effectively. So many of us have networks but we just don’t talk to them. I’m big on conversations leads to opportunities and if you are not starting conversations with people then it is very hard to get them to create new opportunities for you. Everyday we should be speaking to 5-10 people in our network. Send them a social media message, a text or pick up and phone and say hello. The purpose of starting the conversation is to see how they are doing and what they are up to. As you re-engage and build the relationship the more they will be willing to share you into their networks. If you try to start the conversation just to sell you are missing the point and leaving lots of money on the table. Thirdly we need to grow our networks with the right sorts of people. If you only grow your networks with people you can sell to then you can make one sale at a time. That’s not real exciting to me! I want to have the mindset of Sell, Partner and Door Opener. Every person you get into your network should fit into one of those 3 categories. It is more exciting to have a partner that could share you into their network and you get 10 sales, rather than just 1 sale.
So, are you growing your networks with the right sorts of people? Are you growing your networks at all? Or are you always speaking to the same people all the time? Next, are you being the expert or just another person. Do you have authority or are you just hiding in the corner? Social Media today allows you to be the expert and impart great information and value to an audience worldwide. The more you are seen the more your current network can ‘like’, ‘comment’ and ‘share’ you into their networks. This means more exposure, new doors being opened up and leverage to speak to people that don’t even know you exist. Doing live feeds on FB, publishing articles onto your LinkedIn, sharing value across Instagram, Twitter and Google + are all ways to get your brand out their quickly and be seen as the expert in your area of expertise. This will generate new enquires and lead to people opting in for your lead magnets and open up new conversations on how you could help them. If you are not seen and not heard then you don’t exist! Finally, you must be doing cross promotions with other people who have the same target audience that you do. It is hard to find 1 lead after another, day after day. Everyday I want to leverage into new networks and be introduced to 20, 50, 100, 1,000 people at a time. That is what cross promotions can do.
How could you get onto someone’s podcast, webinar, write for their magazine or newspaper, speak at their live event or get your lead magnet shared. All you need to do is find people that have the same networks that you do and you don’t compete with one another. When you think about it there are hundreds of opportunities out there for you. The key to all of this is YOU taking responsibility and small actions to generate referrals and opportunities everyday. There are so many little things you can do, conversations you can have, networks you could get into when you just have a plan. So, I encourage you to start building your teams and finding people that you can partner with, it is just a better way! A Proactive State: How to experience confidence and control in your business. - Simon Bell I’m going to start this article with a bold statement. Here it is… A large part of your ‘experience of success’ will be determined by the amount time you spend in a proactive state. OK… so that’s a mouth full. What does it mean? It means that by spending more time working ‘on’ the business (rather than just in it), you will have more control, have less fires to ‘extinguish’ and you’ll be able to grow the business smoother, faster and with a lot more confidence. If you’re like most business owners, you’re probably thinking, yes, that makes sense, I know that… but how? Here are 3 simple steps to transition from a reactive to proactive and to gain more confidence and control not only in your business, but in life.
One: Daily Dump. This has nothing to do with your fibre intake and everything to do with a pen and paper. Once a day, invest 10-15 minutes and do a brain dump of everything that’s in there. Avoid making this too structured. Just write anything and everything that’s consuming your head space. Please note, you are NOT writing a TO DO list! It would be an epic fail to work directly from this list. The intention of the daily dump is to clear your head completely, so you can then prioritise, delete (remove from the list with no action taken) or delegate the task.

Two: Systemise. The main cause of reaction (& stress) in a business is a breakdown or lack of documented systems. Most business owners under estimate the value of written systems, despite the research showing that 96% of all breakdowns are system failures and not people problems. Systems can be written, voice recorded or filmed. They can take the form of a detailed ‘how to’ or a simple checklist. Don’t get caught up on the ‘right way’ to write a system, the important thing is that it’s easy for your team to understand and follow.
Three: Let it go! If you have young children (girls in particular) you probably just sang the headline (for those that don’t… It’s a Disney reference). But seriously, learn to let go of the menial tasks and DELEGATE. MARK BOURIS
– lessons learnt from the road of business
When Mark Bouris took to the stage at B-xponential October 2016, he shared how he got Kerry Packer to invest $25 million into Wizard Home Loans in 1999.
“Fear is the thief of your imagination,” he told the Bx audience. “To know your purpose, to know your why, that takes away fear. It helps you learn how to market.”
Mark, now chairman of Yellow Brick Road, sold the company in 2004 for $500 million. After the technical terms of the deal were agreed, Mark was told by James Packer that he had to go and see Kerry.
Telling an audience of people from small businesses that passion is not enough is a blunt message. Your purpose, after all, is supposed to feed your passion. Many business owners and leaders in smaller businesses will rave about their passion for what they do, but Mark also highlighted the need for a bit of mongrel when it comes to business survival:
As Mark tells it, the meeting started with Packer looking at him across his desk in silence. He then took out a cigarette and smoked it, still looking at Mark without saying a word. When they finally started talking, Packer put three questions to him which every business owner – large or small – ought to be able to answer. Do you fully understand the purpose of your business? ave you got enough fight to maintain your passion when H things go wrong? Are you prepared to go the distance?
“Passion’s important. We’ve got to be excited about something. You’ve got to be at a minimum excited about it. But Kerry Packer said to me, “Son, passion’s not enough. I want to know – I know that all this stuff you’re presenting to me so passionately, which is going swimmingly at the moment, which is forecast for growth at this level, blah blahblah – I know you’re presenting it passionately. But I want to know, because something’s going to go wrong, invariably something’s going to go wrong: do you have enough fight to maintain your passion?””
Do you fully understand the purpose of your business?
Mark Bouris reminded us all at Bx about having the fight inside of ourselves, to pick ourselves up when we get knocked down.
Mark shared how taken aback he was. Hadn’t Kerry Packer read what Wizard Home Loans did, wasn’t he across the deal paperwork? Yet on the first point, Packer explained to Mark that he wasn’t just in the business of selling mortgages. He was in “the business of people’s hopes and dreams”.
You have passion, you know your purpose, and you have the fight inside to get back up. But Mark asked us, are you prepared to be tested? That’s different to putting up a fight. We all need somebody to test our hypothesis in business. “People in your office might be testing you – above you or

Being prepared to go the distance “I sat there for hours and hours, and about 4pm in the afternoon he came down the stairs, and he said: “Is your name Bouris?” I said yes. He said: “What do you want?” “I’ve got 30 seconds to tell him what I want, and I was smart enough to drop Kerry Packer’s name in there. And he said: “Listen, I’m going to be in Australia in three months time doing my rounds. I’ll see my managing director. I want to go and meet Kerry Packer.” I thought: My God, that’s the last thing I wanted. But they met up, and the managing director of the business in Australia, of the wholesale business said, “You’ve got a deal. You can buy 49 per cent.” There is more – far more – to the financial deal of the story that Mark shared from the stage at Bx. But the point Mark wanted to make sure we understood was this:

We don’t need to have someone give us the answers, we need to have someone give us the questions,” said Mark. For Mark, his test came when Kerry Packer said: “Ok son, so what you’ve got to do, within 12 months, you must buy an influential interest – or all of – the wholesale business that funds Wizard Home Loans.” Mark and Kerry Packer shook on it. And he had 12 months to do it. Talk about a test! In the end it took a flight to Amsterdam, and a long wait in the reception area of this particular Dutch bank to meet the Managing Director. Mark had no appointment, just a commitment to meet the test set of him by Kerry Packer. Here’s how he went:
“What I had was the supreme tester. And it did one thing, apart from scaring the daylights out of me, it did one thing: it got the best out of me. And in order to be successful today, in business, it’s very good to have somebody, whether you call them a mentor or a business partner – somebody to get the best out of you. Because you won’t get the best out of yourself. You never will.” Another gem that Mark Bouris shared, that resonated with me, is a great one when the thief fear is creeping in, or you feel like you are low on the energy to fight back, get up again, be tested again? “It’s an honour to work.
