Children are already back in school, which means football season, cooler temperatures and pumpkin spice everything are on their way. However, the change of weather seasons also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. One cough or sneeze can spread those illnesses throughout a classroom and your home. Therefore, you need a plan to protect yourself and your Hand-washingfamily. is one of the most important things you can do to ward-off germs. Wash your hands often, especially before preparing food and eating. You should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Just sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice to gauge how long you have been washing them. Also, stock up on hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes for emergencies. If you do not feel well, stay home. This way, you avoid passing an illness to others.

almost time to set those clocks back and break out the pumpkin spice everything! Yep, I said it! Fall is right around the corner. I couldn’t be more excited to bring you a glimpse of some of the cutest fall 2022 trends in Fashion, Hair, and Makeup. Fall trends are not always easy to balance in the South when we’re still battling smoldering temperatures. Here are a few tips to stay on trend while beating the heat:
Jon Paule Calcote is a MACcertified makeup artist and a four time certified licensed permanent cosmetic artist.
10. Bangs Whether you choose a blunt bang or a soft face framing bang, bangs have been seen on runways everywhere and trend reports worldwide. By jumping on this trend, I recommend consulting with your stylist to see what style bangs would best suit your face shape and lifestyle.
13. Pastel Eyes Although pastel shades are normally associated with spring, we’ve seen them all over the runways from New York to Milan and mentioned by many of the beauty bloggers this season.
11. Statement Eyeliner This fall, try to go a little bigger and bolder with your eye liner and if you truly dare to be different, try a fun shade such as teal or emerald green. This will sure make you stand out in any crowd.
14. Classic Red Lip Elegant and timeless. Popular since the 1940s, the red lip has been the focus of many dramatic and elegant looks.
Makeup
15. Shimmering Eyes Back in style and blazing are the shimmering eyes of the 90s. If you really dare to stand out, try mixing the pastels trend with the shimmering trend for a makeup look that is right on time and oh-so-seasonal!
9. Sleek Straight Hair The past few years have been all about textured hair styles or soft beach waves styles. Fall 2022 is seeing the return of the sleek straight hair textures and styles.
Hair
12. Barely There Base Makeup Long gone are the days of full coverage foundation. If you have the complexion to pull it off, try a barely there tinted moisturizer or CC cream to give you that lightly polished or natural finish.
7. Dressed Up Ponytail It’s so easy. It’s your basic ponytail but styled up. Try it curled, braided, or add hair accessories such as a statement clip, ties, or a cute head band.
6. Color Hair is all about the shade this season. Shades of copper are all the rage and are sure to warm up any skin tone and complement any eye color. Many salons offer color service in demi color lines that wash out gradually if you’re not brave enough for a full out permanent color!
8. One Dimensional Hair Color No more highlights or balayage. This fall is all about soft solid one tone hair color.

2. Don’t Buy Ill-Fitting Clothes (or Shoes)
• Dark, denim jeans
6. Invest in Good Quality Shoes
Nothing speaks luxury like an elegant timepiece. It is a status symbol, and also, an heirloom. And because we are talking fashion here, investing in a wristwatch from one of the top watchmakers will make the outfit appear more elegant. The same can be said for other accessories, which may not be as expensive as the watch but are still an integral part of every man’s wardrobe. These include but are not limited to ties, handkerchiefs, cufflinks, belts, and even hats to complement the look.
• V-neck or crew neck sweaters
Shoes say a lot about your personality. This is the reason why you need to invest in shoes that are of top-notch quality. Don’t settle for cheap fakes or rip-offs of top brands as they are made from materials that tend to wear and tear easily, leaving you in an embarrassing situation and making you buy more shoes year after year. Take your pick from some of the best shoes that should be a staple in your wardrobe.

3. Leave That Comfort Zone
Afraid to experiment with style? It is high time that you step out of your comfort zone and give your wardrobe a somewhat, if not complete, makeover. For instance, if you favor dark colored suits over light colored ones, then try buying the latter when you go shopping. In the same way, you can experiment with different prints and patterns, fabrics, cuts, and colors. With this step, you’ll realize that you too can carry off one of those looks that fashion models sport. Trust me, even a tiny change in your wardrobe is going to be worth it and you will be astonished at the results!

the present day—all with a sense of charm and artsy modernism. So, when homeowners Brian and Yvonne Davlin wanted to modernize their family home—the renovation quickly turned into a re-creation. According to Yvonne, the sky was the Brilliantlylimit. combining rustic and refined, today, the main house is a 2,000 square foot expansion of the original two-story structure—all with a hipped roof, beautiful en try and new porte-cochère. A shop forms the opposite side of a central courtyard where the pool is perfect ly placed—perfect for entertaining. A screened porch that overlooks the pool area can be easily accessible from the inside or outside.
While not a ‘traditional’ open floor plan, the main entry does open into a large open space—easily combining the living and kitchen spaces, deco rated with a little more glam than the rest of the house. “This house is so much about the entry,” says Yvonne. “It is very much a part of walking in and welcoming guests. It such a won derful place to entertain.”
A celebration of natural material— wood beams and exposed brick—is apparent throughout the house. The hardwood floors, brick and wood beams tie the interior spaces togeth er. The home is a celebration of nat ural material and a beautiful render

ing of the French-Acadian style. But don’t let those quaint subtleties fool you. Bright airy color, sleek fabrics, imported tile and more await as you pass from room to room.
What inspired this home’s design?
SB Magazine sat down with the Yvonne Dalvin to find out how she—along with her contractor husband, Brian—so el egantly created a design with an eye on a warm family home perfect for entertaining.
28 SEPTEMBER 2022 | SBMAG.NET
“Inspiration for us came in many forms, over many years. We were very fortunate that we got to renovate this house from the ground up, literally! Brian originally built this home in 2009. So, after looking at all the homes he had built over the years, talking with his clients, flipping through magazines for ideas, and, of course, living here for fourteen years—we easily figured out what did and didn’t work. We understood what we truly used and what needed to be discarded. And, most importantly, we knew where to delete and where to add. Ultimately, we wanted to design this house to age in place—to be able to entertain, as well as have the ability to accommodate future grandchildren.”
What did you want as the end goal for your house design? For it to be traditional, yet modern design—with artsy feel throughout the interior spaces. I felt that—with all the fur nishings, bright colors, fun wallpapers, and fabrics—you

The porte-cochère on the exterior really added a complete element to the exterior and helped ties the old with the new.
What was your favorite room to design?
We were bound by an existing slab and odd shaped lot. The largest challenge was finding out where we could and couldn’t add square foot age. Some areas we were able to go out, others we could only go up.
“Lots of favorites, but probably all of the smart home features really stand out. The automation systems that allow us to control everything remotely—lighting, security, entertainment, etc.— through phones or computers has been a game changer. There is nothing more relaxing than know ing that all your systems are opti mized for efficiency without you having to monitor everything.”
Mrs. Gina Jenkins of Jenkins Construction helped with the color palette. We wanted a neu tral and light wall color to really showcase the patterns and colors of the upholstery, drapery, and wallpaper.
The kitchen is the winner handsdown. Not out of necessity, but because I’m too happy there. Why should I move? I enjoy company and can easily sit eight people at the island. The pantry doors came from Belgium and were handpicked from The Corbel in Jack son, LA. The kitchen, because of its proximity to everything—I miss nothing that goes on. A close second? My master closet. I really enjoyed watching it come to life.
What is your favorite feature of the home?
Did a particular element tie the design together?

What “hidden gems” are in your design?
Brian and Yvonne Davlin would like to thank each and every person involved in this project, including all the subcontractors, suppliers and vendors who supplied products, materials, time and energy into this very large and challenging project. House plans drawn by Jack Crawford and Josh Contairo; Cabinetry, windows and doors by Custom-Bilt Cabinet and Supply; Plumbing by Peace Plumbing (Jeremy Peace); Plumbing supplies by National Wholesale Plumbing Supply and Coburn Supply Company; Electrical by Caddo Electrical Contracting (Shaun Pendleton and Brandon Greenslate); Site Prep by Performance Demo-Land Company (Clint Davlin); Drywall by Cowtown Materials, Inc.; Roofing by RSI/Advanced Building Products; Lighting by Henson’s Carpet One Floor & Home; Construction trim and frame by Chad Garcie; Flooring by SJ Flooring (Harold Johnson); Concrete by Red River Ready Mix (Chris Jackson), Davila Concrete (Chris Davila) and; Pool by Moorehead Pools (Michael Moore); Interiors by Jenkins Construction (Gina Jenkins); Cabinets by McDowell Cabinets (Brett Walker); Paint by Caddo Paint (Brain Sneadger); Garage Doors by Ark-La-Tex Garage Doors (Rocky Burk); Surround Sound by Custom Media Connections, LLC (William Pendleton); Brick by Acme Brick and McDaniel Masonry (Jared McDaniel); Vent Hood and Handrails by DMR Mechanical (Mark Ross); Outdoor furniture by Corner Collection; Landscaping by Beau Cook Lawn & Landscape (Beau Cook); HVAC B&B AC Service and Repair (Bobby Mitchell); and Photography by Marc Gibson.
The fireplace mantles, which are antique beams along with the corbels they sit on, are from The Corbel. The brick on the
fireplace, as well as the brick in the master bed room, is off of an old building. We wrote bible verses and quotes on the backside of the walls in every room. The kitchen drawers that have lots of my personal touches for how I cook and store things. Finally, the small windows on the porte-cochère are actually two storage rooms, which are great for storage instead of using the attic. Many of the items were salvaged from old building materials, like the brick—giving the home a sense of history and casual elegance.
Tell us about some of the special and custom touches throughout. The pantry doors were hand-made in Belgium and we pur chased them from The Corbel. The hood, along with the stair railings, were custom-made by Mark Ross at DMR Mechan ical. Each bedroom can serve as its own master suite, with its own bathroom and walk-in closets. Obviously the master closet, with an eleven-foot island with glass tops for jewel ry display and other personal items. The master bedroom also has its own laundry room, apart from the kid’s laundry room—which is, of course very convenient and efficient.
What makes this project uniquely yours?

There isn’t anything specific. I’m always bursting with in spiration to try something different; however, I do think my personality is shown in the interiors. I think they are not only artsy and modern—with all the custom furniture and décor— but always chic, relaxing and approachable. I’m a laid-back kind of girl and I get that real life happens in these spaces. They make me feel homey and comfortable. I know firsthand what’s going to be practical and what isn’t.
Needless to say, there is something about all this décor that makes this house feel like a home.
cancer and post-operative adjuvant therapy. A more recent advance was the finding that pre-operative chemotherapy with Paclitaxel and Carboplatin increased the surgical success in selected patients with a large intra-abdominal ovarian cancer burden. Large improvements in anti-nausea medications and drugs to reduce bone marrow suppression have improved tolerability of these treatments. Most cases of ovarian cancer are aggressive. Although patients live much longer now than years ago, this type of cancer usually returns and is challenging to control. Successful strategies to keep patients in remission have been elusive in the past, but recently, a class of medications that exploits DNA repair defects, such as BRCA mutations, has been found to sustain remission in a substantial percentage of patients. Medical oncology continues to advance.
Dr. Richard Mansour is a Professor of Medicine and Program Director CancerSeptemberFellowshipHematology/OncologyofatLSUHealth.isNationalOvarianAwarenessMonth.
Chemotherapy has had major improvements over the past 40 years as well. Cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug, was applied to ovarian cancer in the 1980s, followed by the more tolerable Carboplatin in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, Paclitaxel was successfully added to Cisplatin and Carboplatin, achieving deeper and longer remission than ever
While treatment of cancer has evolved over hundreds of years, the specialized practice of medical and clinical oncology was not widely implemented until the 1960s, due to the progression of chemotherapy treatments. During this time, surgeons, although highly skilled, were not trained in oncologic procedures nor did they have the extensive research, medical image advancement and specialized training like a modern day oncologic gynecologic surgeon has today. Ultrasound was a new but emerging skill for radiologists, CT scans were experimental, and there were no MRI or PET scans. The cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) blood test had not been approved for clinical use. The familial tendency to ovarian cancer due to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations were yet to be discovered. Much of what we know and practice regarding ovarian cancer has totally changed over the past 50 years.
in the BRCA1 gene was reported in 1994 and BRCA2 in 1995. Mutations in the BRCA genes gives a woman an increased lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Three cancer-related mutations in these genes are found in 1 in 50 Jewish people of eastern European heritage and are associated with very high lifetime risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Although BRCA mutations are most common in families who have Jewish ancestry, they also appear in Caucasian and African American women. We now know the incidence of ovarian cancer in BRCA mutation carriers is markedly reduced if an oophorectomy, the surgical removal of one or both ovaries, is performed at age 35 for BRCA1 and age 45 for BRCA2.
Surgical standards have advanced in numerous ways. Multiple studies have reported improved outcomes when ovarian cancer surgery is performed by a gynecology oncology surgical specialist versus a general surgeon or a general gynecologist. These outcomes are due to the extensive training and experience of a gynecologic surgical oncologist.
&UnderstandingTreatment.
I have had the privilege of seeing advanced aggressive ovarian cancer survival after diagnosis increase from 3 to 6 months in the 1970s to 24–60 months in the current era. The quality of life has improved, and the toxicity of the therapy has been moderated. The fellows that we are training today may get to participate in the cure of this disease thanks to past and current clinical trials and research. www.lsuhs.edu/fwcc

Everyone loves a good story. When that story is told through the eyes of a creative person, it’s even better. When that story is told and then written as a book, a play or a screenplay, the story comes alive. But when the story is told and written from one’s heart and soul it stays in the spotlight of our minds forever.

His parents enrolled him in Shreveport’s Peter Pan Players under the direction of Isabell Rosenbloom. It was there, playing the role of an Oompa Loompa in Willie Wonka, that he fell in love with theatre. That was only the beginning. In high school Erik was commissioned to write a play for Peter Pan Players which formally launched his playwriting career. He graduated from Haughton High School and enrolled in the theatre program at Centenary College in Shreveport. Erik received a B.A. in both Theatre and English from Centenary College of Louisiana followed by a M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Throughout the decade of 2011-2021, Erik wrote 18 plays and received 42 productions, workshops, and readings.

Erik Champney, born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, spent most of his formative years in and out of a hospital bed. Born with a muscle deficiency, Erik had to undergo difficult, extensive surgeries that would allow him to walk. In fact, Erik didn’t walk until he was three years old. At the tender age of four, his father became his stenographer as he sat for hours dictating stories and plays. Being confined may have been difficult for him, but he made the best of it by developing an incredible imagination. Television became an instrumental source of entertainment and by the age of nine, Erik had seen most all of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. To this day, Erik claims that Hitchcock is the greatest director that ever lived.

That they know what they’re doing is clear in the sauces. The smoky, buttery chipotle queso accompanies the burrito in a wetsuit or purely as an appetizer, for example. The chipotle honey tequila sauce utilizes local honey, chipotle chiles, and reposado tequila smack of mild sweetness with a kick of heat at the end. And the lime-cilantro crema that is drizzled over nearly all of their fish tacos is as smooth as velvet and is so good, that it’s often ordered as a side on visits.
But, oh, the slow-cooked pork carnitas. They have all the hallmarks of good carnitas: a heap of crumbly bits and tender shreds surrounded by grilled pineapple and cured pink onions; roasted ancho, guajillo, and pasilla chili, for smokiness and unique spice and a little acid bite; and the brilliant flash of a honey chipotletequila sauce that cut the richness of those delicious pockets of unrendered fat, like hidden caramels. It’s piled high on a freshly made, pillowy tortilla. The presentation is simple but awesome. So, not everything is healthy at Don Juanz. But everything sure tastes great.
to approach fresh coastal, Baja Mexican. Photos from trips that friends and family have taken to Cabo and Punta Mita since 1985 inspired the interior design. Don Juanz is reminiscent of a beachfront resort and as clean as a stateside hospital.
Don Juanz’s healthy and wholesome approach to their cooking doesn’t stop in the kitchen. It carries over to their bar, where people order frozen margaritas, good and golden, with all the virtues of the best tequila and fruit purees. Nothing behind this bar smacks of syrup or artificial flavoring. It’s all real. Their on-the-rocks margarita version has the same bold, fresh flavors as the frozen margaritas, but the Cointreau, freshsqueezed lime, organic agave nectar, and top-shelf tequila make you feel like you’re sipping a margarita at a five-star resort in Cabo. You could carry on like this, people-watching and drinking organic margaritas all night. But you lose yourself in a reverie of chips and salsas, one tangy, smokey tomatillo, the other a fresh red blend of tomato, cilantro & just the right hint of salt. And the best thing is that the chips are fried in a dedicated fryer with pure vegetable oil and that’s the only thing Don Juanz fries.

The windshield is a structural compo nent of the vehicle providing integrity to the cabin when an accident occurs. It absorbs the force of the collision and is a part of the safety restraint system. The windshield keeps the roof from crush ing the occupants of the vehicle, allows airbags to deploy correctly, and prevents the occupants from being ejected during a crash. Some assume that windshield cracks are only a cosmetic distraction
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology is a group of rapidly growing new features that make the vehicle safer and provide additional tools when operating the vehicle. Some examples of this technology include adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, collision avoidance system, lane departure warning system, lane keep assist and night vision. Glass Services has the experience to ensure a complete, correct and safe windshield replacement every time. After the windshield is replaced it is necessary to have the cameras calibrated. Glass
Services can calibrate the cameras for most makes and models.
Calibration is the process of returning a vehicle’s ADAS to the original manufacturer’s specifications. It is necessary after a new glass installation when a camera is mounted at the windshield. This ensures the safety features function as originally intended. If the system is not properly calibrated, then the system may not function safely. Glass Services employs two full-time calibration technicians so calibrations can be performed at the same time the windshield is replaced. Most insurance companies cover the cost of the calibration with a glass replacement.

There are a couple of ways these problems can be revised in your child, and the sooner the revision, the better. One of the best options to “fix” these lip and tongue ties is with a medical laser. Similar to the way tattoos can be removed, we can use a special laser that can “cut” the tissues. It sounds like a terrible process, but actually, it is far easier than the traditional method of using either scissors or a scalpel. The

process as a whole takes no longer than 30 seconds with a properly trained doctor who has the right equipment. Lasers not only cut and relieve the restrictions, but they also cauterize the wound as the cutting is done, creating almost little to no bleeding. There are other post-procedure exercises the parent needs to perform with the child to prevent any reattaching of the tissues, but the reattachment after having laser revision is much lower than in the traditional method of using scissors or scalpel. Infants born with these ‘TOTS’ can struggle tremendously nursing due to the inability to get a good latch. They also may snore at night due to the tongue not moving freely, thereby creating an airway concern. When they get to the point of trying to talk, they may struggle to speak properly and enunciate certain words.

The Caddo Lake Institute was founded in 1993. One of the co-founders of the nonprofit organization was Don Henley, who grew up in Linden, Texas, fishing at Caddo Lake before becoming a member of the Eagles.
CADDOLAKE The Treasure that is
ravel + Leisure magazine recently named Caddo Lake one of the nation’s 12 most beautiful lakes. The article highlights the lake’s maze of bayous, the cypress forest with its canopy of Spanish moss and its bevy of unique wildlife, both real (alligators) and uncertain (Bigfoot).
T
Overdyke is executive director of the Caddo Lake Institute. In that role, she leads efforts to preserve the beauty of the 27,000-acre wetland ecosystem.
Henley also became a conservationist. He became enamored with Henry David Thoreau and bought Walden Pond in Massachusetts to keep that property from being developed. He launched the Walden Woods project, complete with a Thoreau library, around the famed pond.
Laura-Ashley Overdyke said she has been “blown away” by the response to the article, but she was not surprised by the recognition.
Henley referred to Caddo Lake as his own Walden, Overdyke said. When he heard about a project to dredge a shipping canal from the Red River through Caddo Lake to Daingerfield, Texas, he “joined forces with some locals from Shreveport and a lot of folks from the Texas side” to preserve the lake. Henley hired an environmental attorney to help plead their case.
“The beauty of the cypress trees, the beauty of the Spanish moss. The beauty of the wading birds — you see egrets and herons all over the place. People who aren’t from here and are not used to a swamp, they can’t believe that it’s real. It has an other-worldly quality to it.”
“I’d love to claim credit, but I didn’t have anything to do with it,” she said. “When I first got this job, we had a guy come down from National Geographic, Sal Melitollo. He’s been all over the world. He got to Caddo Lake, and he was like, ‘This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life.’”
“Ultimately, the (U.S. Army) Corps of Engineers at every turn realized that the ecological cost of doing this canal greatly outweighed any economic benefit,” Overdyke said. “The Corps has to show that any ecological damage would be justified by some huge economic benefit. The economic benefit just wasn’t there, but the ecological damage was.”
The collective managed to save the lake. In the process, they realized that no organization was examining the health of Caddo Lake, except a group of volunteers who called themselves the Greater Caddo Lake Association from
BY SCOTT ANDERSON
Also in 1993, Caddo Lake was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar treaty for its diversity of plant animal life. “That’s largely because it’s so diverse in and if itself,” Overdyke explained. “You have a river system, bayous, seasonally flooded swamps, open lake. Along the edges, you will find some really old growth forests,
Recent studies show those kinds of efforts are paying off, Overdyke said. “When we looked at water quality 30 years ago, Caddo had a lot of problems,” she said. “The water quality has improved significantly, largely due to two things. One, we are getting more freshwater into the system from Lake of the Pines. That has been a huge part of our work. The other reason is there was a chicken processing plant upstream that upgraded their facility, which reduced their pollution into the waters in Texas.”
especially on the Texas side at a place called Harrison Bayou. The Texas side has some of the best of what’s left in our whole country of old-growth, bottom-land hardwoods. All that diversity of habitat, each one of those habitats sustains specialized animals, from teeny tiny freshwater mussels to crawfish and frogs, up to alligator snapping turtles, which are common around here but in the grand scheme of things are pretty rare. Lots of species of concern that are really rare are pretty abundant at Caddo Lake.”
health of the ecosystem. Since 2014, the Corps has scheduled seasonal releases of water from the dam at Lake of the Pines to mimic natural high- and low-water cycles on Big Cypress Bayou and Caddo Lake.
Overdyke said that in addition to
Meanwhile, Caddo Lake Institute engaged the government agencies — Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and even the U.S. Geological Center’s wetlands center in Lafayette. “Some great baseline studies were done about what plants are here, what animals are here, what birds are here,” Overdyke said. “What is the habitat like around the lake? Through that process, the Fish and Wildlife service, with all of that data, designated it a Priority 1 habitat. Caddo Lake came in at the highest level of conservation priority because it was deemed irreplaceable.”
The Caddo Lake Institute continues to study the overall health of the lake, Overdyke said. After the lakes primary tributary, Big Cypress Bayou, was dammed to create Lake of the Pines, the organization worked with the Corps of Engineers to develop a plan to preserve the
Uncertain, Texas, population 95.
“There certainly weren’t a bunch of scientists looking out for the lake,” Overdyke said. Henley’s group formed the Caddo Lake Institute in 1993. The organization partnered with several universities to beginning studying the lake’s ecosystem, including Centenary College, East Texas Baptist University, and LSU CentenaryShreveport.studiedthe sediment and geology of the area, Overdyke explained. LSUS sent a team to survey the bird population around Caddo Lake. And ETBU tested the water quality and chemistry of the lake.
“We are super nimble, so we can focus on whatever the most pressing issues are at the lake,” Overdyke said. “Our biggest role is to coordinate resources at the local, state and national level to address whatever the issues are at the lake.”
Overdyke enjoyed science and considered being a doctor. But after struggling with a chemistry class, she changed her mind and double-majored in English and religion.
The Texas side of the lake has seen an “eco-tourism” cottage industry grow up around the lake, with rental properties, restaurants, and boat tours. Overdyke thinks the same thing can happen on the Louisiana side. “At some point, I’d like the Louisiana people to start seeing the lake as something more than just their own private back yard or a place where we can drill for oil and gas,” she said. “I think the Louisiana side could begin to look at Caddo as a real point of pride for our area.

It made me a decent little skier. I didn’t want to fall, because I was kinda scared of being impaled by a sucker rod. And I was pretty confident there were alligators and big gar, water moccasins in the water, so I’d generally get up in the first attempt, because that was some good motivation. I loved Caddo. Some of my best buddies, we’d be up there together every weekend.”
“We are blessed with a lot of lakes. Some people have never been to Caddo. They love to go to Cross. They love to go to Bisteneau. That’s great. But I think it’s a point of pride to have such an ecological jewel and such a pretty lake. I think we can start taking visitors over there and taking boat rides.”
improved water quality, studies show the forest is benefiting from these efforts as well, with fewer dead trees around the lake. On Sept. 27, volunteers with the institute will use nets to gather a sampling of the lake’s fish population for scientists to Thestudy.Louisiana-Texas state line divides Caddo Lake. While most of the activity and renown is on the Texas side, the work being done benefits the entire lake. “The Louisiana side benefits from that,” she said. “More than 25,000 Louisiana households get their drinking water from Caddo Lake. Everybody’s benefitting from the improvement in the water quality.”
explain sucker rods to me. She said old oil and gas rigs, they put this metal pole. But then the water level rises and it covers up the metal pole. And I am like, ‘How am I supposed to be aware of those, then?’
Much of the land around the lake in Texas is publicly owned — either state or federal land. That has better facilitated some ac complishments, such as the Ramsar desig nation, on that side of the lake versus more private ownership on the Louisiana side.
It’s all a labor of love for Overdyke, who remembers fondly learning to water ski on Caddo Lake when she was 5 years old. “My mom would be like, ‘Beware of sucker rods,’” she recalls. “I made her
Caddo Lake Institute received a grant from the Community Foundation to replant native trees around the lake at Earl G. Williamson Park in Oil City. Overdyke also is seeking to establish an official state paddle trail on the Louisiana side of the like. The institute is eager to address any concerns — ecological or economic — on both sides of the lake.
She worked in Washington, D.C., a number of years before returning to Shreveport, where she worked for the Community Foundation. All of her different jobs had the theme of “do-goodery, nonprofit-y, storytelling kind of stuff,” she said. “The nonprofit thing brought me to the Caddo Lake Institute. I like science, so I could understand what the scientists were telling me and repeat it.”
Overdyke is eager to see the Louisiana side of Caddo Lake catch up to the Texas side in its fame. “I want Shreveport to benefit,” she said. “I am a Shreveport girl. I would like to see Shreveport begin to see Caddo Lake as a real asset.”

a horse can be a great way to get outside in the fresh air and get some exercise. Owning a horse can be an enjoyable experience if you make an informed decision. Take your time and consider all the requirements of horse ownership, from what they eat to how much space they need. The truth is, too many first-time horse owners select a horse that isn’t quite right for them. They eventually get frustrated, give up on horses altogether, and completely miss out on the joy of horse ownership. Horses are definitely a lot of fun, but they also require a lot of work! With an average lifespan of up to 25-30 years, a horse can be a longtime companion but also require a long-term commitment. When you become a horse owner, you accept responsibility for their health and well-being for life. A horse will be part of your life for many years. Invest the time and effort necessary to make your years together rewarding. Do the research, choose your first horse wisely, and enjoy one of life’s most enjoyable experiences. Giddy-up!

f you were to line up every Natchitoches meat pie that I’ve ever eaten, end-to-end, their combined length may span the stretch of I-49 that connects Shreveport and Natchitoches. During my first year as a graduate student at Northwestern State University, I commuted between Louisiana’s oldest city and my home in Shreveport three or four times per week.
When my commute became untenable, I rented a room in Natchitoches—not far from my summer job on campus—and spent the next three months eating everything that Natchi toches has to offer other than meat pies. From some of the finest homestyle “country cooking” that I’ve had anywhere in Louisiana to a haven for fans of homemade pizza, I was continually surprised by all that Natchitoches has to offer beyond their famous meat pies.

BARBECUE
Both of my go-to recommendations for barbecue in Natchitoches re quire a bit of effort on behalf of the consumer, but they’re worth it. If you’re anywhere in Natchitoches— whether you’re window-shopping on Front Street or attending an event on the NSU campus—you’re never more than a fifteen-minute drive from Grayson’s Bar-B-Q (5849 US-71, Clarence). Famous for smoked ham sandwiches on soft homemade buns, Grayson’s is an edge-of-town barbecue roadhouse in business since 1965. While the tiny, counter-service-only dining room at Grayson’s is fun to see, the best seats in the house are the quiet picnic tables located out front, where guests can lazily enjoy a chopped ham sandwich and an RC Cola in the mottled shade of a pecan tree. Grayson’s Bar-B-Q is open, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. They close at 6 p.m. on Sundays.

surprised if the person who takes your call says something akin to: “Let me ask Peggy how long it’ll take.” This pizza isn’t quick, cheap, or “hot n’ ready”—instead, it’s old-fash ioned, made-to-order, and delicious. Though I enjoyed all of my meals at Peggy’s, my favorite by far was a piping-hot calzone stuffed with the ingredients used to make Peggy’s sig nature Greek pizza: mozzarella and feta cheeses, spinach, red onions, and black olives. For the Greek calzone, get the homemade balsamic vinegar and feta cheese dressing on the side and use it as a dunking sauce, like you’d usually use marinara. Peggy’s Homemade Pizza kept occasionally erratic hours during my three-month stay in Natchitoches, so it may be best to confirm the hours first. If you’re traveling up or down I-49 and are looking to grab takeout, Peggy’s is an especially easy option. A traveler could exit I-49, pick-up a pizza they’d called-in to Peggy’s, and be back on the road within ten minutes’ time. Expect to spend up to $20 per pie.
If you’re still hungry for classic Southern comfort food, head to the Bread House Nakatosh (1202 Texas Street, Natchitoches). The sweetand-spicy greens at this friendly meat-and-three remind me of Wine Country Bistro’s famous greens, and their pimento-laced mac n’ cheese brings to mind the version once served by Ernestine Moody of Moody’s Café in Minden. Need a little taste of something sweet? Grab a bag of tea cakes at the register. If you’re going to be exploring Natchitoches by car, you’ll want that bag of tea cakes— moist cookies, rich with vanilla and nutmeg—within easy reach during your drive. Bread House Nakatosh is open, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., every day. Expect to spend about $15 per person.

nearly 3 percentage points to almost 6%.
Also, it’s impossible to talk about the employment factors without discussing remote work. The shift to remote work is likely to cause several ripple effects. For one, high-wage jobs in law, finance, and management have traditionally been tied to cities. As this tie changes, only are these higher-wage workers likely to move out of the city center, but all of the lower-wage service jobs in the urban core that they support are also suddenly in jeopardy. This trend produces what some economists have called a “donut effect”— lower property values and rents in the central business district, surrounded by higher ones in the suburbs.

Turns out by mid-morning, in a field the length of a soccer pitch and just as wide, the nearest shade a lifetime away, I took my third bushelful and set it at Mr. Peabug’s muddybrown-leather-laced-up-booted feet. Looked up at him and said, as if I were the union boss speaking for all the teamsters — it was only me and his daughter Susie — “Seems like a lot of work for fifty cents.”
Not a bad way to make a living, I thought. Not when we eat like this.
“It is,” he said, understanding. “But you got a better deal coming along today?”
Teddy Allen is an award-winning columnist and graduate of Louisiana Tech, where he works as a writer and broadcaster.
always high cotton for me, and probably not for you either. Before I scaled the lofty shovel heights, I was paid 50 cents a bushel picking cucumbers for Mr. Peabug Miller, a sometimes ornery but mostly happy farmer of my misspent youth. I was 6. First paying job.
Like life, work can be difficult. That’s why they call it “work,” the old folks always told me, and not “sitting on the couch.”
I love working. Mainly because it gives me a chance to hang
But I knew my life’s work wouldn’t be just cucumbers. No telling how many times at how many farmers’ tables I sat at back then wondering what I’d be when I grew up.
I helped build the “new” sewer system in Bawcomville around West Monroe back in the very hot summer of 1977. Was mainly a shovel guy. If you ever go to the bath room in Bawcomville, I think you’ll be pleasant ly surprised with the flushing and the water pressure. We built it to last. Let me know.
Take a minute and remember all the jobs you’ve had (and true, some of them weren’t so hot).
Since I will never have any real money at all, it’s a good thing that I actually like to work. Just glad I can. When people ask me how I’m doing, my standard response is “I’m vertical, got some people who care about me, and employed: living the dream.”
Helped build the Camden Bypass in 1981. Again, shovel. But next time you drive on it, well, you’ll see. There are roads, and then there’s the Camden, Arkansas
ButBypass.itwasn’t
What a sheltered life I led as a little guy. I thought sec ond-grade spelling was work. Had no idea my mom and dad were out there with hard hats on, trying to figure out how to keep fish sticks on the table and food in the freezer, and may be, just maybe, get us to Six Flags once a year.
kids we heard Tennessee Ernie Ford sing about loading those 16 tons and what’d he get? another day older and deeper in debt.
I always thought he was just making a rhyme, but the more I live and work, the more I think he might have been onto Thesomething.jokeisthat money talks, but all it ever says is goodbye.
Fortunately, we live in America where it is not that difficult to build some wealth. (Not writing from experience, but I hear things.) If you know a youngster who’s just entered the “work force,” have a talk with them about how money works. That, or tell them to read Ben Franklin. They’ll thank you for it. And the sooner they have the info, the better.
Hmmm. At that point in my life, barely able to read, mobile only as far as my bike and little legs could take me, all I knew was farmers and fields. I took my bucket and moseyed back out to the cucumbers.
At lunchtime, Mrs. Colleen, Mr. Peabug’s wife and a country cook of the blue-ribbon variety, told me to belly up. I don’t know what we had that day but it would have been something along the lines of what we had most every meal at Mrs. Col leen’s or at any other table in Dillon County: fried chicken or steak, rice or potatoes, peas or butterbeans or baby limas, cornbread or biscuits, tomatoes and, of course, cucumbers, everything fresh, just picked.
I still wonder that. And still don’t know. But I’m working on it.
