Up for a new experience? There’s plenty going on in the Bay this week for you to broaden your horizons. On Friday, Steve and Evan Strong are bringing their ‘Forgotten Origins’ slide and discussion tour to the Byron Community Centre at 6:30pm. They will be speaking about the Original People of Australia, showing eye opening artefacts and sharing untold stories. Then on Saturday, the Evolve Yoga Festival is on at the Byron Bay Public School, featuring local and international yoga instructors and leaders in wellness. You don’t have to be a hardcore yogi to attend, everyone is welcome. There will be workshops, meditation, dance, chanting and tasty treats. Tickets are $50 online or $60 cash at the door and the marketplace is open to the public without a ticket. On Sunday from 12 - 4pm, the Patagonia store on Jonson St is hosting Japanese silk screen artist, Naomi Kazama for a day of upcycling, repurposing and breathing new life into tired old garments. You can bring a pre-loved item or there will be organic cotton t-shirts available for a small donation. If you’re in the mood for a movie, then hop along to see Last Paradise at Pighouse Flicks. It’s an eco-adventure film telling the Credit: Carly Brown Photography untold story of extreme sports innovation. Have a great week!

Bin There, Done That Victoria Millar-Wise __________________________________________ Living in harmony with the ocean & beauty that is Byron Bay, I am highly conscious of rubbish on our beaches and in our streets. Let’s unite and pick up rubbish when we see it, ask the council why there are literally no bins in public places & encourage visitors to use the bins by creative signs & setting high vibe examples. Response from Mayor Simon Richardson: Keeping the Byron Shire clean needs to be a whole community objective, from the person tossing rubbish from their car, dumping an old couch on the street or leaving their longnecks on the beach, councils can only do so much. In the Byron Bay, Council has 80 waste bin enclosures and 14 recycle bin enclosures in the CBD and on the beachfront from Main Beach to Clarkes Beach. During this Christmas School Holiday period, there are 12 additional waste and 6 additional recycle bins placed around Apex Park and Denning Park. All CBD and beachfront bins are emptied in the morning and the afternoon during this period, and daily at normal times. In addition, there are 54 waste bins on stands spread through other areas of Byron Bay, emptied on days that depend on usage. Council is currently investigating the installation of additional permanent bins in Byron Bay outside of the CBD. At the end of the day a fine and a sign should be a last resort. People need to take responsibility for the rubbish they create. The bins are there, lets all use them.

Helmet Free Anonymous __________________________________________ While the rest of the world has shunned making bike helmets compulsory and research has failed to show any net protective value of bike helmets, my friend was stopped by the police for not wearing a helmet whilst riding her bike and was given a warning. She didn’t hear the police tell her she had to walk back to her hostel, which was 10km in Suffolk so when she got on her bike to ride home they cut her off with the police car and both police aggressively got out of the highway patrol car and started to yell at her to get off her bike. My friend is 60 years old and partially deaf. These police were extremely intimidating and bullies, not serving the community. My friend got back an hour later shaken and dehydrated and very upset at how she had been treated. Ban the Helmet and please police with ego issues seek counselling.
