IN EUROPE, FATHER’S DAY IS

celebrated on 19th March. In America and many other parts of the world it falls on the third Sunday in June. Here in Australia we settled on the first Sunday in September – creating our own Antipodean Father’s Day tradition. So, on Sunday 6th September, if you can’t do the family BBQ, here’s some other local options to entertain Dad.

Wee

Byron at Byron’s $6 million refresh may be worth a look. Crystalbrook unveil phase one on 1st September, which includes a new restaurant offering sustainable and local produce. How about a guided tour and tasting at Stone & Wood brewery. After a walk-around tour and tasting, you might get him a S&W gift pack. Maybe the $50 bundle – 6 pack of lager, socks and a Coldie Holdie; or the $99 Pub in a Box, with a Stone & Wood carton, glassware, bar mat, and some Brookfarm beer nuts – stoneandwood.com.au. Oyster Festival hits Byron Bay once again for the month of September, and the Balcony boasts a large selection of the freshest and most decadent oysters from a variety of regions. To join in the daily mollusc madness, bookings are highly recommended. Chef Sean Connolly is also putting on a mean Surf ‘n Turf, with a free frothy and Balcony stubby holder for Dad; or perhaps a boozy brunch with bottomless Bellini's, Bloody Mary's and a big breakfast balcony.com.au. Beach Hotel keeps going with its live music line up. On Sunday it’s Richie Williams 1.00pm / Foggon Trio 4:30pm / Harry Nichols 8.00pm.

WHEN

uni, my father gave me some advice for attending interviews and work meetings – “Be on time, be prepared, be polite and be observant – people will judge a man by his shoes”. Except for the bit about the shoes, it seemed pretty straight forward and sensible, and easy to put into practice, so I did. Dad had plenty of philosophies that he shared over the years – sayings and truisms he adapted and adopted for living the life of an English gentleman in Australia. “Neither a borrower nor lender be; A gentleman never runs for a bus; Everything in moderation; Deep breathe for 10 minutes before breakfast, Don’t use the word hate”; and his favourite, “The best is yet to come”. Oh, for the benefit of hindsight! I may have missed a few more buses and trains, but boy, I could have avoided a lot of hangovers and sidestepped plenty of stupid mistakes if I had stopped to listen to Dad. What can I say – I was a young male! As Mark Twain so eloquently put it - "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." But back to the shoes. I understood the importance of a man’s footwear. Are the shoes scuffed or polished, cared for or neglected, well soled or full of holes? Does the brand provide any clue to the man’s financial standing and success?

So I bought the best shoes I could afford - Lloyds, or Loakes, or Church’s brogues if I was really flush with funds. And I looked after them. Our laundry always had a well-stocked shoe-care box – Nugget, Kiwi Black, Cobra Brown, horsehair shoe brushes and felt polishing cloths. (Some of those shoe polish brands may have had to change their names over the intervening years!). Dad’s simple advice no doubt helped me carve out a useful career in business. When Dad said “people will judge a man by his shoes” he had probably hoped I might also come to master something more than just shoe care. Before passing full and final judgement on the man in front of you, based on his unconscionably shabby, cheap and ill-fitting shoes - first imagine walking a mile in them. Aha – another light bulb moment. I did eventually pass the Empathy lesson, but it took me decades to really understand it. Who knew what insight someone could gain by observing you judging them?! This Sunday is Father’s Day - a day to honor fatherhood and paternal bonds – and to remember all that priceless advice. I don’t know what your father might make of the comatose state of our COVID seduced world, but I reckon I know just what my Dad would say – “The world’s gone stark raving mad – bonkers! Put away those ridiculous thongs, put on your best walking shoes – we’re heading out!” Right again Dad - Happy Father’s Day. And for everyone else - stay chilled - the best is indeed yet to come. Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY YOU MIGHT STILL BE

under the spell of the creative and otherworldly Full Moon in Pisces. A Venus/Saturn opposition at the same time may bring separation or inhibition, which are contrary to the urge to merge of the Pisces Moon. There is not much rose-coloured romance during this time and relationships may feel restrained and cold. On Thursday and Friday the astro flavour is also quite polarised. Even though we have two practical and positive earth trines, from Sun to Uranus (surprise) and from Mercury to Saturn (strategy). The first one is enthusiastic and full of radical, new ideas, whereas the second one instigates a quite pragmatic and conservative outlook. There is a push and pull between innovation and sticking to tried and true methods. This may prove quite disruptive and it may get increasingly difficult to really express what you feel, which creates more division between people, in particular in close relationships. Tensions between Venus in Cancer and Mars in Aries are rising; their square is exact on Friday evening and could cause further alienation between partners. Try to stay kind and fair, and recognise if and when you need to get some space. On Saturday morning differences might be overcome (Mercury sextile Venus) and the vibe is definitely a bit more upbeat! On Sunday Mercury the messenger, moves into harmonising Libra and Lady Venus enters funloving, gregarious and at times a bit dramatic Leo. Monday to Wednesday are great days to further a project or to tie up loose ends. An inspiring Sun/ Jupiter trine is building (exact on the 10th) and comes just in time before Mars in Aries turns retrograde (also on the 10th) for a two months detour. More on that in next week’s edition... For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Lovers Tarot card teaches the art and craft of longterm relationships, after the honeymoon has fizzled out. The myriad of polarities and opposite opinions that cause tensions can be defused by asking yourself what love would do in such a moment. This way you can learn how to stay emotionally close even if you are sure that you are right and your partner is wrong.

h TAURUS

The 9 of Cups is the quintessential wish card. How often do you perceive your happiness to be in the future, only to be granted conditionally once this or that is achieved? The secret of this card lies in conjuring up the wonderful feelings of fulfilment and satisfaction, as if everything has fallen into place already. This enthusiasm and openness naturally guides you towards more of what you want.

i GEMINI

The Knight of Disks relies on tried and true methods when new situations challenge him. He does not have much in common with the fast, curious and changeable spirit of a true Gemini. With him by your side you can learn how to balance your need for stimulation with the benefits that come from perseverance. Thursday and Friday might bring insights.

j CANCER

The 6 of Disks symbolises accomplishment and the inner satisfaction that comes with it. Others might feel drawn to you for guidance and they marvel at your resourcefulness. There is a lot you can offer and your rewards lie in watching these people succeed as they follow your inspiration and directive.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

With Lady Venus in your sign from Sunday onwards and the 3 of Cups drawn you can look forward to a time of great warmth in relationships and creative fulfilment. This is not about ego gratification, but about living and nourishing yourself and others through the abundant love that flows from your open and generous heart.

The 7 of Cups symbolises the tendency to rely on your busy mind and your endless to-do-list too much, while neglecting the longings of your heart. By working hard and dutifully you may avoid feeling your inner emptiness, but it also keeps you stuck. If you take some time to explore your emotional discontent with the status quo, you can surely come up with some great ideas about finding more fulfilment.

a LIBRA

The 8 of Swords represents doubt and confusion which are often a result of a difficulty establishing clear boundaries with others. You may feel the needs of another more strongly than your own, and your habit of trying to please and appease others does not bring you the peace you are looking for. Take some time to feel yourself and get in touch with your own needs.

b SCORPIO

The 5 of Swords depicts inner and outer conflict which might keep you irritated. You have the power and energy to win but the costs can be high, in particular if you have to sacrifice your integrity. There might not be a satisfying solution available right now; nevertheless it is the perfect time to explore what drives you to be combative, compulsive or competitive.

With the 10 of Swords drawn you may feel at a low point in your life. Matters of the heart or financial worries might preoccupy your generally optimistic mind so much, that you feel heavy in your heart. Avoid being self-depreciating, make a habit of counting your blessings and know that your apprehension will soon dissolve.

The Princess of Disks symbolises the creative force of the goddess in her gestation phase. You are a master of manifestation and the only thing that trips you over every now and then, is that you get impatient if you don’t get immediate results from your efforts. Remember that a lot of transformation and materialisation happens in the unseen and unfolds when the time is ripe.

e AQUARIUS

The 2 of Cups symbolises love in action. What could you do today to express your love in more wonderful ways? Maybe you could surprise your loved one with something special, or if you are single you could just give yourself all the love and appreciation you ever wanted by practicing loving yourself unconditionally.

f PISCES

The Prince of Disks advocates patience and perseverance. With him by your side you find it easier to take care of all the little mundane tasks that are necessary to build the world that you want to live in. Make sure you stay grounded, on track and try to avoid emotional swamps.

DEAR KEENWA,

The kids have only just been back at school a few weeks, and its school holiday time again. Wtf? Surely they could've skipped this one, as I'm not sure what the teacher's need a break from? What about a holiday for the homeschooling parent teachers? If my kid's teacher had actually attended the parent interview I requested, they would have heard my suggestions. Other invitations were that they pop around at acid hour and lend a hand with dinner, or get up at the crack of dawn and butter toast, or at least drop off more booze. - Day Pyjamas

DEAR DAY PYJAMAS,

Can I suggest that when it gets to 9pm you change into night pjs? Or , even better, you could get the pyjamas of the whole class together, and pack 'em up in a backpack, with toothbrush and drop them (with child attached) to the teacher's for the holidays.

DEAR KEENWA,

I recently quit school to become a TikTok influencer. I get calls everyday from agents about my content, which I just cannot stop making. Won't stop. Someone messaged me recently whose father had passed away from Covid, and said my videos were getting her through, so I will continue to do them. It is perhaps the most powerful political tool we have on our hands, wouldn't you agree? - Corona Clocked

DEAR CORONA CLOCKED,

Powerful it is. There's been 315 million plus installs in the three months alone, yet security researchers have recently revealed TikTok can access your clipboard on your phone, and have been caught spying. My guess is that they're also involved in 5G, and able to track those that attend Black Lives Matter protests, but you didn't hear that from me. On a side note though, for former holiday landlords, why not rent out TikTok houses where talented people can all live together, make videos, rack up followers and rake in some serious sponsorship deals.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

This week's review

TITLE: Utopia Avenue AUTHOR: David Mitchell NUMBER OF PAGES: 561 READING TIME: 9 hours 27 minutes PRICE: $30.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Utopia Avenue is the new novel

from David Mitchell, author of bestseller “Cloud Atlas”. It tells the story of the fictional 1960’s British "psychedelic-folk-rock" supergroup Utopia Avenue, fronted by folksinger Elf Holloway, guitar demigod Jasper de Zoet, blues bassist Dean Moss and jazz drummer Peter "Griff" Griffin. The band exists amongst the smoke-filled bars and backstreets of London in 1967 – in the music world of David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Steve Winwood and Keith Moon. Mitchell incorporates so many of the who’s-who from the 60’s that you can lose track of the story if you pause too long.

WHO IT'S FOR: Utopia Avenue contains references

to people, places and events from other works by Mitchell, so fans will be familiar with the faulted characters, multiplicity of story lines and supernatural occurrences. The scale can be exhausting, as the band experiences more drama in a year than the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Beach Boys did in a lifetime!

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: In the absence of live rock

concerts, this novel provides a taste of the buzz and the energy that we’re all missing. Sex, drugs, rock & roll are all present of course, plus a fatal car crash, attempted blackmail and plagiarism for dramatic effect. Mitchell’s famous horological themes also, somehow, make an appearance.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “Jasper notes that Jesus's disciples

were, essentially, hippies: long hair, gowns, stoner expressions, irregular employment, spiritual convictions, dubious sleeping arrangements and a guru.”

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Wreck Me ARTIST: Travis Collins RELEASED: July 2020 GENRE: Australian Country BIO: This is the 8th studio album from Australian

country music singer-songwriter Travis Collins. Already an ARIA chart topper, winner of six Golden Guitar Awards and four CMC Australian awards, Collins is an established Australian country musician. This album was recorded in Nashville, Sydney and the Hunter Valley, and in some senses is a compilation of sounds and singles, rather than an album with a common theme. Legendary Nashville producer Luke Wooten, who has worked with Collins before, does help to bring it all together. WHAT TO EXPECT: Collins and his band are great live performers, so it is a bonus that they all feature here. Michael Cole (guitar), Scott Greenaway (bass) and Brad Bergen (drums) bring their guitar riffs and raw power, which combined with Collins’ high energy vocals and heartfelt lyrics makes you feel part of a crowd pleasing singalong. WHAT WE LIKE: The title track and opening number Wreck Me sets the country-rock tone, with guitar solos, thumping drums and an edgy Ozzie twang. Rainy Day, one of the first singles released, is a much gentler track, where Collins pays tribute to a friend lost way too early. Damn Girl features guitars and a sing-a-long chorus. Girl Outta The Country is reminiscent of Nickleback (Rockstar country-rock style). Make Up and Weekend have been out as singles for a while and both have that Keith Urban, commercial southern country “geettaar” sound. Desperado is one of Collins’ all-time favourite Eagles numbers, and he gives it his own twist. STANDOUT TRACKS: Wreck Me, Girl Outta The Country, Desperado. PERFECT FOR: A Friday or Saturday night pub singalong – or home ISO version.
