I USED TO BELONG TO AN
over 50’s club. We met once a month to discuss stuff of interest to people of our age demographic – retirement plans, golf handicaps, investments, ailments – even relationship advice sometimes found it’s way on to the agenda. The only rule for membership was, naturally enough, that you were over 50, and believed “you’re never too old to have fun”. Every six months similar clubs would get together for a “Wellness” conference - a weekend of golf, banter, food and wine, plus some guest speakers to tell us the other things we should be doing to help our health, wealth and happiness. Slightly morbidly, it was traditional to start each conference with an “In Memoriam” tribute, where we would pause to remember any friends who may have passed away during the previous six months. Mother’s clubs might celebrate births – singles clubs, marriages – we got deaths. By the time the Annual General Meeting came around, for all clubs in the country, the “In Memoriam” tribute would stretch out to a 15 minute power point presentation. A quarter hour of silence, as photos of deceased members flashed across the screen – photos and names of mostly strangers. As the tributes got longer, I found it increasingly depressing to be constantly reminded of my mortality. I stopped going to the over 50’s meetings in 2015. Fast forward to 2020, and mortality rates dominate the news –
ARE the news. Each night we discuss the COVID Curve - how many infected, how many in hospital, how many in intensive care, how many deceased. Since the start of the year, tragically the virus has been responsible for the deaths of about 180 people in Australia – or one a day – and we track, trace and report every one. There are 25 million Australians and 80,000 have died so far this year for all sorts of other reasons – that’s over 400 a day. Imagine if we detailed all of those. Once upon a time we argued about climate change. We were excited about the sports results. We wondered about Brexit. We loved China. We laughed at Trump’s ridiculous Mexican wall. How things have changed. Global emissions targets are achieved without fanfare, and without really trying. Spectator sports seem tainted and slightly contrived. Brexit is just the beginning of a global retreat to nationalism. “Made in China” now comes with a warning. We have stopped singing “we’re all in this together” - now we yell “don’t stand so close to me” as we erect our own Mexican walls – a lovely orange plastic barrier between Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, a detention inspired farm fence in Melbourne’s public housing precinct, and some reinvigorated and reconfigured State-of-origin borders to keep the rest of us “safe” from the southerners. Staying safe at home means my boredom grows faster than my beard. “Cheap wine and a three-day growth” has turned into a six-month scruffy hangover. There are 7.8 billion people in the world. One million die every week for all sorts of reasons – 98% of them are NOT Covid related. Sooner or later we will have to learn to live with this virus, and occasionally die from this virus. The certainty of death and taxes has not changed. It started with a kiss – who ever thought it would come to this? Tony - Byron Bazaar

Be careful to not overreact to all the different stimuli, fears and opinions, and remember kindness when others don’t agree with you. This is especially important during the Aquarian Full Moon on Tuesday which coincides with a Mars/Jupiter square. It may well mark a make-it-or-break-it point. Overconfidence and risk-taking might lead to new trouble; at the same time nerves are raw, making it easy to over-react. There is also a danger of feeling morally superior and therefore super-judgemental! On Wednesday Mercury moves into playful, fun-loving and at times a bit bossy Leo. WHAT TO EXPECT: Reyne writes about people and places he knows, and times and events we are familiar with – all with a healthy dose of sarcasm. The music is easy to listen to, even understated, allowing the lyrics to take centre stage, like in the title track. “I’m gonna kick some tyres / and light some fires / and punch a hole in the sky …. I'm gonna leave my room / and hand my gloom / onto some other guy.” WHAT WE LIKE: From the opening Toon Town Lullaby,
Reyne’s customary wit and clever wordplay are all here, along with acoustic guitar combined with simple harmonies. Low Hanging Fruit is laidback, but with a cynical view of the music industry –“ I don’t see bravery, I just see knavery”. This Time strums along like a BBQ sing-a-long favourite; The Tallest Man I Ever Knew is a tribute to his good friend and ex-band mate Brad Robinson, who died over 20 years ago – with uptempo guitar riffs and some lovely literary references. The album closes out with the tuneful Wrong Guy “But your shadows out-dance you wherever you run”.
