Around Town This Week

It’s a bumper of a weekend ahead, kicking off with Seth Sentry, one of Australia’s premier rappers, giving fans a taste of his upcoming second album at the Hotel Brunswick from 7pm. Friday also sees three other Aussie acts – VanderAa, Adam Harpaz and Dusty Boots – come together to perform as part of the 3X3 Tour at a secret location in Byron from 4pm; once you’ve purchased your ticket, the location will be emailed to you the day before the event. The tour has teamed with Clean Coast Collective to host a beach clean-up at Broken Head Beach earlier that day; join the crew on the sand from 10am. If there wasn’t already enough happening on Friday, it’s also the first night of the Guilty Pleasures Burlesque and Cabaret Festival in Brunswick Heads. With performances to be held across the Memorial Hall and the Brunswick Picture House, the nipple tassels will be spinning until Sunday night.

POSTCARD TAROT READINGS

Fun, unique readings every Friday at Newrybar Merchants, other times by appointment. Contact Julie 0423 612 117 for more info & bookings.

On Saturday morning, expect the Bay to morph into a sea of lycra as the Byron Bay Triathlon kicks off (hint: not the best day to drive unless you want to be stuck in worse traffic than usual). Lastly, if you’ve always wanted to know how to make a food biz profitable, get yourself down to Combi on Wednesday from 5:30pm to hear three prominent local producers spill the beans at the latest installment of the cafe’s The Gathering speaker series. Enjoy!

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

FOOD PACKAGING CHOICES, Jasmine

I think we need to be actively engaged in our food packaging choices. We need to be educated about how we directly impact our environment and the ways we can minimise this. Imagine if three hundred people refused a straw — that's 300 less straws that will find their way through the rubbish system and eventually end up suffocating a turtle. As a surfer, I have a love affair with the ocean. You notice the ocean daily, changing from crystal blue waters to stormy cyclones bringing cloudy mud and foam with it. Imagine if all that foam and mud didn’t get washed away. Imagine if that was rubbish that you didn’t really use and you didn't really need. THAT'S MY JAM DANCE CLASSES Dance classes for adults. Old skool, pop and indie tunes. Friendly and fun courses, hens & workshops. E: thatsmyjamdance@gmail.com Text 0474 351 467

Imagine you could change that — simply by being proactive about your food packaging choices. Ask for no straws when you order your juice at the front counter. Ask for no lids on your takeaway coffee. Ask for no straws or lids with your takeaway smoothie. Make a difference little by little. Be the change you want to see in the world. Congrats Jasmine, your submission has won you and a friend coffee and a sweet treat! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “FOOD PACKAGING CHOICES”? TEA TREE MULCH FROM THE FARM Tea tree mulch straight from the farm to you. Rough and fine chop minimum 6 metre loads and up $38.50 per metre delivered. Conditions apply. 0424 163 784 Dear Keenwa, I can't buy my organic paleo coconut, turmeric, bullet latte from a cafe without booking into one of the awesome workshops from the many posters on the wall. I've lived here for a year and attended 78 workshops, am I any closer to being whole? And is it too much to ask for a workshop advertising ban? Surely advertising before human caffeine consumption is illegal? I'm broke. - Workshop Withdrawals Dear Workshop Withdrawals, You could run around town and enforce the advertising ban, but by the time you let all the cafes know, you'd be booked up to Christmas 2020. If it's instant wholeness you're after, I tend to agree with old mate Rumi who claims that, “What you seek is seeking you.” Which I think means go and grab yourself a coffee machine from Aldi, stock up on those different coloured capsule thingys. Put ya bare feet into the earth of your own front yard, and kick back with all the caffeine until 'it' comes and finds you. Make this your new daily grind. Dear Keenwa, This is actually a lost and found shout out for my favourite crystal. You know the kind - pretty pink, super long, kept in your undies draw? I recently rented out my room on Airbnb, and it has been missing ever since. Coincidence you think, or should I put in an official complaint? I can't afford to replace it, but I can't afford to lose my Airbnb income as it's the only way to make rent in The Bay. - Sad and Swordless Dear Sad and Swordless, As my mum used to say, “it's better to have loved and lost, than not to have loved at all.” She also advised against washing downstairs with soap, that plain old water is just fine. Anyway, I hear your dilemma. It may be your favourite crystal but will it cuddle you on a cold night on the streets? Send you cute memes or accommodate your nearest and dearest? Go to bed child, safe in the thought that there are plenty more crystals in the sea. This is Byron Bay after all. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

H E A V I L Y M E D I TAT E D with

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - GO NAMASTE YOURSELF. One translation of namaste is “the divine in me sees the divine in you.” And I do see the divine in you. But the divine in me also sees the divine in me. The more you see yourself as an expression of divinity and a channel for the divine, the less you identify with ego.The less you identify with ego, the less you struggle with the torments of insufficiency, anxiety, and uncertainty. The less you become entangled in striving and judgement and competition. The less separate you feel and the more connected you remember yourself to be. As this new way of seeing yourself unfolds, you invite in guidance, higher thinking and absolute trust. Your purpose and your path unfold with the calm, peaceful, quiet focus of confidence. You step into flow and let yourself be moved by spirit not striving (AKA that punk Ego). As you remember that the gifts you have to offer the world are expressions of divinity, it makes it easier to be brave and share joyfully and generously. And yet stay humble AF. Because it ain't you, it's the divine. So stop playing small. Recognise that you are a soul not a body. That you are spirit not ego. That you are limitless not limited. Infinite not finite. You are here to be the deliverer of the gifts that have been bestowed on you. Open your eyes and see yourself as you really are. DIVINE. Show up accordingly.

On Thursday morning the Full Moon in Scorpio provides great determination to transform and heal any relationship, including the relationship to yourself. Also remember the ongoing magical opportunity for creating change that you want to see in the world. This is courtesy of the fire trine between Uranus, Saturn and the North Node which stays with us for the next three months. On Sunday (Mother’s Day) some folks might be challenged by the obligatory flavour of a Moon/Saturn transit, or by the craving for freedom and excitement that a Moon/Uranus trine can ignite. On Tuesday Mercury moves into Taurus; he is retracing the same path as in early April. Therefore some plans or issues from that time might have to be revised. Communication can improve because more patience and practical solutions are naturally available. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The 3 of Swords describes the tendency of the mind to rework old, gnarly bones of the past. You might suddenly find yourself trapped in negativity that is difficult to shake off. One way that assists you to consciously focus on recovery and make peace with what is, is adopting the attitude of gratitude for the things that work out in your life.

h

Taurus The 8 of Wands symbolises a time of frantic activity that stretches you in many different ways and into many different directions. This might not be you favourite state of being but if you build up resentment and act stubbornly, you only increase the energy that is pushing you.

i

Gemini The 2 of Cups reminds you that moving towards love is a conscious choice you can make in every moment. Eventually this mindset can become your default way of reacting to any given situation. That’s how the relationships to yourself and others improve magically and you can celebrate heart-felt connections.

j

Cancer The Prince of Cups represents the need to get in touch with your deepest inner longings and find ways to fulfil your ‘inner lover’. All too often you might be focused on the wants and needs of your loved ones, and thus neglect yourself. Maybe you can reframe what you used to label as ‘selfishness’ into ‘selfnurturing’ or ‘self-regeneration’.

k

Leo With the 9 of Wands you are ready to rise to any challenge this week with a measured but powerful response. You might learn a lesson or two in how to combine the softness of your heart with the strength of your willpower; or how to infuse your passion with compassion.

l

Virgo With the 10 of Swords drawn you might find yourself entangled in negative thoughts. Sometimes it takes a while to even realise that you’ve been on the negative thought train for an extended period of time. Imagine how your best friend would talk to you; this may help you to change your language and generate kindness for yourself.

a

Libra This week the Sun Tarot card enhances your life on every level. In your radiance you become a people magnet and relationships improve, teamwork blossoms and collaboration comes naturally. This could also be a highly creative time; the fact that you believe in your abilities and your worthiness invigorates and expands your consciousness.

b

Scorpio The Ace of Disks may appear as a gift that the universe drops into your lap; be it a sudden windfall, or some circumstances that arrange themselves in just the way you want them to. You might perceive it as good luck, but in truth it has to do with your newly-found, inner alignment and how you are opening up to what you truly deserve.

c

Sagittarius The Wheel of Fortune represents an opportunity to turn things around. Whatever your biggest challenge is at this moment in time, it may be illuminated by an ‘aha’ experience of profound insight. You are expanding your outlook and are gaining a greater perspective on how to improve the quality of your life experience. Wishes might be granted...

d

Capricorn More than anything you might crave peace of mind this week. The 2 of Swords symbolises mental over-activity because you might feel the need to make big decisions. Take your time to balance all different aspects of what you are trying to achieve and don’t allow inner pressure to push you into premature action. Meditation might be the key...

e

Aquarius The 10 of Wands indicates that you might have been shouldering extra burdens and that you may have got stuck in the habit of over-extending yourself. This kind of uphill struggle exhausts you mentally, emotionally and spiritually and it is time for you to release yourself from the oppression of all the ‘shoulds’ in your own mind.

f

Pisces The 7 of Cups paints a picture of excessive indulgence in addictive patterns, may it be over-eating, -drinking, -shopping etc. Your attempts to fulfil the longings of your heart are just substitutes for what you truly crave. Therefore it is time to face the situation and find new ways of nourishing and healing yourself.

Spicy Lentil Soup

Brrrrr ! Byron Bay is getting colder by the minute as we close in on the winter months. Warm up with this recipe for spicy lentil soup. Filled with fresh vegetables and herbs this week’s feast is an easy dinner option or perfect for a mid afternoon pick me up.

Ingredients: • 2 x tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 x onion, chopped • 1 x celery stalk, chopped • 4 x garlic cloves, chopped • 2 x teaspoons ground cumin • 2 x teaspoons ground coriander • 2 x teaspoons ground ginger

Method: • 2 x tablespoons tomato paste • 400 g can chopped tomatoes • 2 x 400g cans of lentils, rinsed, drained • 2 x cups (500ml) vegetable stock or chicken stock • ½ bunch kale, stalks removed and chopped.

1.

2. 3.

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery. Stir for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic, spices and tomato paste, and cook. Stir until fragrant. Add the tomato, lentils, stock and 3 cups of water. Bring to a simmer, then cook for 6-8 minutes for flavours to infuse. Stir in kale and cook for a further 1-2 minutes until kale is wilted. Remove from heat and dish up your soup in a bowl.

That's My Jam - @thatsmyjamdance

What was your motivation behind starting That’s My Jam in Byron? To create a funky dance space for adults where everyone can feel empowered to express themselves, and jam to awesome music whilst having fun. I taught 90’s hip hop in Melbourne before moving up to Byron, and I’m a hip hop girl at heart, but I wanted to create classes that aren’t pigeon holed into one style. Tell us your favourite song to dance to? There are so many! We’re currently dancing to Beyonce’s, 'Who Run The World (Girls)' and I love how empowered and strong it makes me feel. There’s a great super woman energy that exuberates in class when it starts. What classes can people come along to? Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm in the Byron Bay Industrial Estate. We also run monthly Saturday workshops, hens and birthday parties. I regularly teach at the lovely Future Dreamers clubhouse too! We have an Old Skool hip hop dance course starting on the 23rd of May and a Justin Timberlake Mash Up course starting on the 25th of May. You’re welcome to come try the first class and book into the whole course if you love it! Most jammers sign up for six weeks after trying one class and they sell out quite fast. That's My Jam is open to anyone, regardless of gender or background, who just wants to have a good time and not feel constrained by labels or expectations. What’s your favourite part about dancing? The sense of freedom and joy. Dance is a powerful way to express how you feel through movement, and connects you with your body in such an intimate way. And the bonus is that dancing is such good exercise that it doesn't feel like exercise! How would you describe That’s My Jam and how it’s different to other dance classes? That's My Jam aims to create a warm and friendly space that is safe and supportive. I want to empower my students to feel more confident and connected with their body and inner child in a positive way. There is a lot of laughter in class! What are your tips for those of us who are totally unco? There are SO many beginner dancers at That’s My Jam and it’s incredible to watch their confidence flourish every week. The trick is, attend regularly and don't hide in the back - own your moves! Have fun, spread your wings and be yourself. Fun comes before choreography.

Head to @thatsmyjamdance for more info and class times.
