Around Town This Week
This week’s heat wave is ideal fish ‘n’ chip-eating weather, which makes Brunswick Heads’ Festival of Fish ‘n’ Chips seem like perfect timing. It kicks off on Saturday with a family fireworks display in Banner Park at 9pm. You should know that this free annual event actually has little to do with food, having earned its name – so the story goes – when a group of locals were sitting at the pub almost 60 years ago wondering what to call a new wood-chopping competition, and talk of woodchips in the air and fish in the river birthed the Festival of Fish ‘n’ Chips. You can watch axemen and women from around the world compete in a series of events from the 18th21st, including a ‘state of origin’ chop-off between NSW and QLD contestants. Or, you know, just go to the Hotel Brunswick for fish ‘n’ chips. Across the shire, there’s plenty more to keep kids entertained until the school holidays wrap, with Byron’s Youth Activity Centre, Spaghetti Circus, and Circus Arts all rolling out youth programs, and Mullumbimby Pool offering inflatable fun on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 12-2pm. Crafty adults may wish to sign up for one of the Byron School of Art’s Summer Tasters sessions starting Monday, or take the fam along to the Groovers, Makers and Creators Fair at the FSG Woodlands Hub and Sculpture Park in Knockrow on Saturday from 3-8pm. Have fun! Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

There has been a noticeable increase in people around town at the moment. Yes we are talking Byron Bay in high peak summer holidays & the influx seems bigger than ever. Sure the traffic’s been bad, the streets are busy, the beaches packed but it’s not always like this in town and for those that live here & work here, we know it’s going to happen and find ways to move around amidst it all, or leave town till it all calms down. You would think however that if people are coming for holidays or day trips that they are coming to enjoy what this town & community has to offer. I am sure most do but the other day while walking my bike through town after a meeting with my computer, books, diaries and bags, I was almost run over deliberately by a very rude lady in a hurry down the love lane street. Then an old man sped up as I crossed the road to get lunch where I was informed, actually there were lots of rude people in town. Really what is the point of being rude? Dear Keenwa, Every year I write down my new year’s resolutions and without fail they only last a week. This year I want to be healthier, happier and hippier. How do I make sure this year I follow through? - HHH
Dear HHH, Look, if you were living in the present moment, in the here and now as our friend Eckhart Tolle suggests, would you really care about your new year’s resolutions? As the Tibetan Buddhists say, “we already have everything we need.” There is no need for self-improvement. Your health, happiness and hippiness should rock up any day now though if Rumi really is the man, as what you are seeking, is also seeking you. You might want to ask yourself while you’re waiting, in Byron Katie’s voice, “is that really true?” And remembering that your thoughts do create your reality when you answer yourself, I’ll let you in on a little secret. Ask. Believe. Receive. Or as another great philosopher named Taylor Swift says, “just be yourself, there is no one better.” You feel me?
Dear Keenwa, I am a new resident to Byron but I struggle feeling like a real local. How long do you have to live here before the locals take you seriously and start welcoming you into town? - Blow In
Dear Blow In, Locals? You mean the barefoot people with beards and turmeric-stained fingers that sit around drinking questionably fairtrade cacao, home birthing in Mcmansions? Goodluck getting them to take a five second break from hashtagging ‘secret’ waterfalls to notice you, babe. The real Byron locals are hiding in the sand dunes unable to make rent, reminiscing on the good ‘ol days that Byron was built on, far out concepts such as human connection, harmony, and ecological sensibility. Surprise yourself and go chat to one of them. You might just feel like a local.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - Love yourself fiercely. “Perhaps we should love ourselves so fiercely that when others see us, they know exactly how it should be done” - Rudy Francisco The point is not to cover over or pretend. It’s to rise up and live in a higher vibration. That’s where you belong. So much of the way we speak to ourselves and about ourselves, so much of the way we move, eat and care for ourselves physically and emotionally is simply out of habit. A habit, a stubborn neurological pattern, well worn tracks that the wagon wheels of our behaviour sink into effortlessly. Today, be a trailblazer. Be your biggest advocate. Your number one fan. Your own BFF. Notice your internal dialogue and choose a different tone if it’s normally less-than-loving. Speak of and to yourself like you would your own child- with nourishing, kind, compassionate words. Feel grateful when move your body, take in the landscape of your body like a lover would. A field of sensation to be celebrated. Regard your body not as a burden but as precious vessel you’ve been entrusted with. Honour it and nourish it with care and attention and choices that say “I love you and I am deeply grateful.” Treat yourself to something that fills up your cup- a cat nap, a hot bath, a walk on the beach, a massage, a cup of tea with a friend who makes you laugh, a workout, painting, beading, drawing, creating something beautiful, a juicy meditation, an early night tucked in bed, whatever makes your heart open up and sing. Love yourself fiercely. Lead by example. Show ‘em how it’s done.

The Full Moon in Cancer on Thursday could bring sudden, unexpected events that might move you way beyond your comfort zone! Remember to breathe, stay flexible and don’t get caught up in reactivity or vengeance. With four planets in Pisces everyone’s feelings are intensified and a t-square involving Sun, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto may explode like a fire-cracker, disturbing your peace and quiet! Taking time out in nature or with a creative project might be the perfect remedy. On Friday Venus unites with Neptune in Pisces; this can be beautiful if you’re in a romantic mood and with a perfect partner, or in a highly creative and satisfying phase of your life. Otherwise realising how far your reality is from your ideals can be very disappointing and disturbing indeed. Nevertheless Mercury in Capricorn might assist in making a realistic assessment of your situation and encouraging down-to-earth plans. Collectively and personally we are in for big changes while all the planets of our solar system are in direct motion (until 6th of February). For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
Aries The Tower Tarot card is the archetype for big upheaval and sudden changes. Combine this with the astrological flavour of this week and you might be in for an emotional rollercoaster ride! When things are so obviously out of your control, all you can do is surrender, let go and adjust as quickly as possible to the new.
h
Taurus The Judgment card encourages you to take stock
and make an honest appraisal of where you are at concerning your personal and professional situation. Your perceptive is very accurate right now and this is the perfect time to initiate changes for the better on many levels; some kind of rebirth is imminent.
i
Gemini
The Adjustment card symbolises perfect inner and outer equilibrium which can be achieved if you have a meditative attitude towards everything you are experiencing. Therefore it is necessary to bear witness to all the emotions that come and go, as well as aligning yourself with absolutely honest and ethical principles.
j
Cancer The 8 of Disks represents a concentrated effort
to be grounded and well organised, in order to be able to respond to the challenges of this Full Moon time in your sign. This may be an absolutely emotional high-tide for you; working in a structured environment and taking care of details is actually soothing and comforting right now.
k
Leo With the Magician Tarot card you are truly centred
l
Virgo The 5 of Disks speaks of a predominant worry
and focused on your current objectives. Your vision, creative power and communication skills are soaring to new heights and you can now make concrete reality out of what previously was just potential.
pattern that can plague you when you feel overwhelmed and emotionally stretched. The trouble is that most of the ‘what if’ scenes and other scenarios that you run through your head never come true, but keep you stressed and therefore unable to relax in the moment.
a
Libra The Princess of Disks symbolises the creative force of the goddess in her gestation period. What you are going to bring forth is still hidden, but the momentum is growing and you are on time and on track. Trust your inner voice and follow through on those little hunches...
b
Scorpio The Prince of Wands inspires you to great leaps of faith; he is the bringer of change, he makes things happen and he doesn’t sweat the small stuff either! You can mobilise a lot of energy and passion right now. As you shed old, limiting beliefs about yourself, you can charge forward and realise more of your inherent potential.
c
Sagittarius Freedom is always a big theme for the Archer and this week the Prince of Swords amplifies any issues concerning perceived restrictions. Once you go beyond your initial reactivity to certain situations, you might find that in your quest to overcome these hurdles, you are actually up against the limitations of your own conditioning and beliefs.
d
Capricorn The 9 of Disks stands for solid gain and material success that comes when you stick to tried and true methods. You might be very busy reorganising and systemising your professional sphere, in order to enjoy more long-term affluence, but your important work is actually your inner alignment with the principles of prosperity and abundance.
e
Aquarius The Queen of Disks is the archetype of the wise woman. Your experience and maturity is a valued asset to any society, group or family, therefore others might seek your counsel. On the creative level this can be an extremely potent and fruitful week, provided you apply yourself with determination and diligence.
f
Pisces The 4 of Disks describes a dilemma; during this emotionally charged week it might be absolutely important for you to draw clear boundaries and set limits towards family, friends and colleagues in order to feel respected. Nevertheless once you have laid down the rules you might suddenly feel sad, lonely and uncared for.

Q&A
A Quick Chat With ...
JANE MILBURN Textile Beat
Can you tell us a little about what you do? I’m a sustainability consultant working in the slow clothing space with individuals, groups and governments to reduce our material footprint. What are the main facts that we need to know? Australians are the second-largest consumers of new clothing in the world after Americans. In 2015, we bought an average of 27kg each. As well as increasing consumption, the fibres have changed in the past decade, with two-thirds of new clothing now made from synthetic fibres derived from petroleum. The three easiest steps we can take at home to be more conscious? Clothing does for you on the outside what food does inside – it nourishes, protects, and warms your body and soul. Think about what you are wearing – look at the labels to find where the garment was made and learn the feel of different fabric compositions. Before you buy anything new, ask yourself will I wear this 30 times, will it last #30wears? Always buy the best quality you can afford, and choose second-hand first. Where did your passion for ethical and sustainable textiles come from? I grew up gathering treasure from nature and making things. After completing an agricultural science degree, my professional work was rural journalism, communications and issues-based advocacy. Favourite thing to do in Byron? Swimming at the north-facing Wategos Beach followed by a walk to the Lighthouse. What should we watch out for on clothing labels? You want to wear clothes that have a good story to tell, and that is often reflected in the label. Check country of origin and fibre type, and make your decision based on that. You can check out Textile Beat at Workshops of Byron Bay January 18-22, textilebeat.com or social @textilebeat.
