Around Town This Week

Yeah holidays! It was touch and go there for a while, but Bluesfest ticket holders will be pleased to hear that the rain looks set to (mostly) stay away this weekend as the likes of Patti Smith, Santana, Mary J Blige and more hit the stages at Tyagarah from Thursday. Just down the road, the Brunswick Picture House will be celebrating it's first birthday with a fun-packed Easter weekend program including the all-ages Really Good Good Friday Circus Bonanza at 2pm on Friday, Cheeky Cabaret at 7pm on Saturday, and cabaret and stage legend Paul Capsis at 6pm on Sunday, followed by another instalment of Cheeky Cabaret at 7pm. Young ladies home for the holidays would be wise to check out the Future Dreamers’ school holiday events calendar; this week’s highlights include a moonlight cinema screening of Hunt For The Wilderpeople at 6:30pm on Monday, and a DIY beauty recipe workshop with Plastic Free Mermaid at 1pm on Wednesday. If you’re working through Easter, why not rent a hot desk at The Corner Palm? The light, leafy, retro-styled co-working event space opened this week in the Arts & Industry Estate. I know where I’ll be writing this column next week… Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

TRICKY MONEY GREEDY, Anonymous A letter to my past... Slavery was “abolished” but reintroduced on mass without anyone realising it. As a single parent I will pay heavily as I am expected to contribute to the work force whilst leaving my child alone to be looked after by someone else they will come to consider mum. I can study online at home and stay with my child in the hopes of being re-educated to enter the work force I am now too old for. I stay up late at night finishing chores and wake up early to try and have things organised. I am much too tired and ashamed to socialise. To my future, you will have anxiety brought on by pressures put onto you, the job interviews you yourself no longer believe you are worthy of. If only you were a tourist on a working visa, the job selection would be endless. But don’t worry, in the future they will legalise marijuana to soften your heart and ignore the anxiety and guilt you feel for the disconnect you have from your children.

RESPONSE TO “STUNNED” ISSUE #129, Raphael Lee Dear Caitlin, and anybody who has concerns about stinging blue bottle creatures. It's nearly impossible to warn people about their presence because they move only with tides, currents and winds. If it's blowing on-shore, it's a good idea to check carefully for any blown on to the sand. Bits of the tentacles can still sting, on the sand or in the water. If you see any, don't go in! Current advice from the Ambos, is to remove any tentacles on the skin, wash the sting site with saltwater NOT freshwater, and NOT with lemon juice or vinegar. Don't rub sand into it. Then immerse the stung area in hot water or ice in a towel. If someone has stings around their face and neck call 000 and get an ambo. Congrats Raphael, your submission has won you and a friend coffee and a sweet treat! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “STUNNED”? Keep the convo going! Dear Keenwa, After living in Byron for a number of years, I met a Melbourne girl who stole my heart. I left my boardies at The Pass and moved to the Surf Coast, Torquay to be with her. My use for rubber has swapped and I now own just one big piece to protect me from the cold windswept reefs of Bells. I miss Byron so much and I cry every day for her...what should I do? - Cold Clean One Dear Cold Clean One, Look, a wise man once said you can take the boy outta' Byron, but it doesn't mean you have to take the Byron outta' the boy. I think a nice big glass of fermented toughen the hell up is in order for you. What is stopping you from wearing boardies at The Quay? Your own small testicles? Have a homemade golden turmeric milk rooibos cacao chai from the bulk mix ya mum sent you and get out there mate. Nothing like a few warm tears to thaw out the frostbite on your lumbersexual facial hair anyways. Dear Keenwa, Is it OK to secretly use plastic bags in my own spare time but maintain a hessian bag, cotton shopping bag and trendy brown flask appearance in public? I love a good plastic for my wet swimmers, stinky Lorna Jane activewear and dog poo pickups (but not the same bag). - Fantastic Plastic Dear Fantastic Plastic, I love these people that whine about plastic bags yet use disposable nappies (which make up 40% of landfill FYI) and takeaway coffee cups, the same people that drive SUV'S and drink green juice and say namaste a lot but also swear at people who take their parking spots. The same peeps that smoke and buy junky Christmas pressies, that most definitely don't come in canvas bags. As long as you keep the bags outta the whales mouths and reuse them for muddy shoes, kitty litter, broken limbs when showering, and returning books to friends in the rain, we good. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - WHERE AM I CHOOSING TO PUT MY FOCUS IN THIS MOMENT.

If you want to shift your reality, make a change, or break a habit, here's a question to pose to yourself, moment-to-moment..."where am I choosing to put my focus in this moment. Because how you live your NOW is an investment in your future. This question is a reset button. It works for being more present with your partner or your kids. It works for breaking free of the confines of fear and stepping back into the circle of hope. It works for getting some perspective when you're feeling stressed, swamped, or overwhelmed. It works for kicking habits (like multi-tasking or overdoing the social media scrolling or mindlessly medicating with wine or chocolate #justsayin). It works as a reminder for practicing forgiveness and compassion. It works for loosening the grip of anxiety. It works for manifesting more of what you want in your life. Because what you do/think/feel now flows forward like a river and subtly carves out your future path. Choose the direction you want the flow to go. Right now. "Where am I choosing to put my focus on this moment?"

While the Sun unites with Uranus (exact on Friday) in fiery and feisty Aries, sparks of inspiration or anger can ignite. At the same time Lady Venus is super-sensitive and intuitive in Pisces; she is retrograde and almost reunites with Chiron, as she did in late January. Therefore relationship trouble from that time can re-emerge, however if you are able to open your heart and get vulnerable, this can be a great time of healing. It’s also perfect timing for a spiritual retreat or immersing yourself into a creative project over Easter. A Sun/Saturn trine on Monday has a very responsible flavour and inspires workable and practical outcomes; great progress can be made by reviewing and reassessing your direction and your responsibilities. A Mars/Venus sextile helps to focus on cooperation and overcoming grievances. Monday to Thursday are very opportune days for mediation and peace-making in any troubled relationship. Remember that Mercury is also in retrograde; so take great care with communication; messages might be lost or misunderstood, and travel plans may be interrupted by unforeseen circumstances. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

a

h

b

Aries The Priestess offers you the opportunity to be initiated into the art of inner listening and making peace with what is. You might want to withdraw from distractions and business to seek inner guidance. As new perceptions arise, acceptance and surrender provide you with resourcefulness and you make a wonderful negotiator. Taurus The 4 of Swords indicates the need to approach difficult relationship issues which keep reappearing in your life, in a new way. This goes hand in hand with the peace-making astrological flavour of this week. What’s needed most is your willingness to open to change and a certain flexibility while creating surprising solutions.

i

Gemini The Knight of Wands represents an adventurer

and spirited revolutionary. You may feel inspired to embark on a passionate mission this week, or you might feel ready to take a leap of faith and charge forward into uncharted territory. You are ready for action and trying to hold back would only aggravate frustration and anger.

j

Cancer The Queen of Disks and the Crab have much in common; they both tune into natural rhythms, femininity and nurturing. This week you are asked to apply your ‘inner, wise woman’ to all tasks necessary. When you contemplate the high road and the bigger picture, you assist your family and loved ones in a benevolent and healing way.

k

Leo The Lovers Tarot card does not only promise romance, soft lights and enjoyment. It also has a very real and down-to-earth component of commitment to show up with sincerity in times of crisis or heartache. During this sensitive week make sure you don’t allow your pride to get in the way of healing a difficult relationship.

l

Virgo The Queen of Cups suggests opting for retreat to

a quiet place to recharge your batteries. Nature nurtures you in a way that makes it easier to own your feelings and find a way to express them without your inner judge telling you off! No more abandoning yourself, repressing or denying your feelings on the way to emotional mastery!

Libra The Queen of Cups suggests opting for retreat to a quiet place to recharge your batteries. Nature nurtures you in a way that makes it easier to own your feelings and find a way to express them without your inner judge telling you off! No more abandoning yourself, repressing or denying your feelings on the way to emotional mastery! Scorpio The Magician symbolises pure creative power, combined with excellent focus and timing. You too may produce magical results if you utilise his skills. This week’s astro flavour commands your verbal and non-verbal communications to be sensitive, intuitive and non-intrusive to make miracles happen.

c

Sagittarius The Fool Tarot card heralds a new heart-felt beginning. It is time to let loose, and allow your spontaneity, playfulness and sense of adventure to take over. Courage and determination are needed, whether this is an inside journey or one out into the world. Trust your heart’s desire and let your longing show you the way.

d

Capricorn The Ace of Swords symbolises the clarity and determination that follows an intensive and absolutely honest soulsearch. Cutting through confusion and doubt leads you to a new understanding of your innermost truth and sets the signposts for further action. New awareness and insight refresh your mind and regenerate your will-power.

e

Aquarius When the Devil appears it is time to deal with your shadow; may it be a dysfunctional relationship, substance abuse or any other way you keep yourself prisoner of old habits, and cycles of shame or regret. Denial is often in the way, therefore it all starts with acknowledging the unwanted and hidden, taking stock and considering your options.

f

Pisces The Knight of Cups brings good news or may offer you something you find extremely attractive and irresistible. Yet you have to stay true to your innermost feelings and you need the courage to express exactly that, as graciously as possible. Romance, art, music and writing may bring you what you long for.

Chocolate ganache cake from The Guapa Tree

Nat Stolzel is the creator of this delightful and conscious creation. Complete with a cacao and coconut crust the cake is gluten, dairy, refined sugar free and vegan friendly. Nat’s goal is to help change consumer habits so people can make ethical decisions about things we buy and food we consume.

Ingredients: For the filling - 1 tbsp organic pure vanilla extract - 2 tbsp lecithin - ¾ cup maple syrup - 1/3 avocado - 1/2 cup coconut cream - 1 cup raw cacao powder - 1 cup coconut water - 1 cup cacao butter, warmed to liquid - 2 cups cashews (soaked 2-3 hours) rinsed and drained

For the crust - pinch of Celtic salt - 7 meedjool dates, pitted - 1/2 cup shredded coconut - 1/2 cup carob powder - 1 cup almonds

Method:

To make the crust 1. Using a food processor, process the almonds and coconut until finely ground. 2. Add the carob powder and process. 3. Add dates one at time and process until mixture is homogenised and the ingredients stick together. 4. Press mixture evenly into 9" springform pan and set aside. To make the filling 1. Place all ingredients, except the cacao butter and lecithin on a high speed blender, and blend until smooth. 2. Add the cacao butter and lecithin. Continue blending until well integrated and smooth. 3. Pour over crust, spread evenly then place in the fridge to set for 24 hours.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

NATHAN MOON

Byron Magpies player and photographer Being a keen photographer, who do you believe takes the most ‘selfies’ in the team? One man who doesn’t mind the camera would be our self proclaimed club legend, Jonathan Brooks AKA Brooooksssyy. How many players in the team are follically challenged? We hear there are few. Euphemistic way of putting it for the blokes is they don’t require a barber I think. There are 4 of the boys, myself included, that are smooth up top. There would be another half a dozen or so holding on and trying to get a couple more year’s out of their precious locks. What's your favourite spot in Byron to photograph? Seeing a sunrise is the best way to start the day and Byron being the most eastern part of OZ there is no better place than Belongil or Main Beach to snap the sun rising over Cape Byron. Do you have to know anything about AFL to enjoy a game? Not at all. Come see for yourself and get down to the nest. Tell us about Gary Nash’s sausages, what’s his story? There’s no other BBQ starter and sausage griller like the Nash. He’s dropped about 30 of them on the ground at a club function before and they still got eaten, so they speak for themself really. Nashy is your true blue club legend, every club needs a bloke like him. He’s a lifelong member and played for the club back in the day. We hear there is a jumping castle at each home game, is it true it’s so large kids have gone missing in it? The jumping castle…Not sure where it is now but I think it may be set up in Brett Porter (the coache's) backyard, he can’t get enough of it! What tips do you have for anyone wanting to get into photography? Ahhhh….Considering I’m only new to it all, my advice probably isn’t the best. Practice makes perfect though, I develop nearly every photo I take, whether I’m happy with them or not. Due to everyday different moods and feelings for the photos I’m not happy with, I revisit them at a later date and I tend to find that I couldn’t remember why I didn’t like them, sometimes they turn out to be your best ones.

You can find Nathan @nathan_moons_photo or catch him at the Byron Magpies first game of the season, 22nd April @ Pottsville.
