It’s Film Festival time! The 10th Byron Bay International Film Festival kicks off on Friday and will run for 10 days across multiple venues. The line up is packed with remarkable films and now also includes virtual and augmented reality categories. Curious? So are we! There are way too many highlights to list…but a fun activity for Sunday would be a trip on the Magic Bus from Byron to the Brunswick Picture House. Head along with the film maker on the bus to experience a special screening of Going Furthur. Check out the details of that film and all the others, plus the opening and closing parties at bbff. com.au. The Great Pub Tour (that got postponed a little while back) is on this Friday at Bruns pub with Mick Fanning, Bede Durbridge, Erin Molan and DJ Salty Beats. There are going to be a stack of food trucks in and around the pub and it all kicks off at 4pm. If you’re after a mid-weeker, Harvest is putting on ‘Wild Harvest’ next Wednesday night, featuring foraging stories and Northern Rivers food history from an Aboriginal perspective. This special evening will raise funds for the Boomerang festival and four delicious courses will set you back $70 a head. Enjoy! Photography Credit: Jake Morgan

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

In such a small town sometimes it’s hard to give (much needed) feedback to local businesses. I feel like it’s impossible to write a review on Google, Yelp or TripAdvisor without being recognised- and then ostracised from my local haunts. And yet I feel that’s the only way to give a little constructive criticism. What to do? - ‘Fraidy Cat

Antique glass bottles Variety shapes and sizes, 1920’s,30’s,40’s, some embossed. Ten boxes sold as lot $100. Suffolk Pk 0421529666. For Sale 2007 Ford Fiesta Black 4dr. manual. 108 kms. Regd, CTP until Aug 2017. Excellent condition $5200. Phone 0477567363 Bruce.

Dear ‘Fraidy Cat,

While cat has your tongue, the rest of the community is sitting here copping too much hipster ‘tude and fifteen buck smoothies that take all day to make. I often wonder, where’d you go barista bro, to actual Peru to collect that maca powder? The time to unite is now. I have a longstanding feminist dream. One where all the women of the world shut their legs for twenty-four hours (I mean every single one, no sneakys) and wake up in the morning to appreciation, respect and goddess worship. Hospitality is a lot like feminism. Stop the coffee people - for one day, do not enter a coffee or smoothie establishment in the entire shire. We’ll see whose rolling their eyes + refusing to serve decaf then. (insert fist pump emotiji)

Dear Keenwa,

I’m all about composting and using the green bio bags from my bin (you know those ones that always break). I also like protesting, and do beach clean ups too, it makes me feel good inside (similar to drinking Baileys). The fact the planet gets a benefit is great, but if I’m being honest with myself, I compost and protest to boost my selfesteem. I don’t think I need a spiritual realignment as I am saving the world, or do I? - Do Gooder

Dear Do Gooder,

Uugh what is it about putting things in tight translucent bags around here that always break?! As Che Guevera said, “The myth of the self-made man, has to be profoundly hypocritical: it is the self-serving demonstration that a lie is the truth,” which I think means that you’re pretty much in-line, and to keep drinking Baileys, as long as it’s fair-trade.

Got something to say? - Well here's your chance ... Love Daylight Savings, Samantha A _____________________________________

There are two types of people in this state, those that love daylight savings and those that don’t. I for one; love daylight savings. I love the feeling that after work, I can still have a life. I love the late afternoon surfs at the Pass, the sunsets over the mountains, the afternoon BBQs and the late afternoon ciders at the Wreck. I also love the fact that having daylight savings in NSW separates us even more from our neighbours in QLD. Congrats Samantha, your submission has won you a double pass to a general admission film of your choice at The Byron Bay Film Festival! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize.

The Byron Brand, Anonymous _____________________________________

In response to “Home Of Magic” I feel for the recently arrived family trying to find an affordable home in our lovely shire. In my own corner of Suffolk, apart from sky-rocketing rents, the main problem is a shortage of available ( and affordable ) rentals. In my block, two large houses have been sold this year as holiday rentals...and this is not on Alcorn St. but in a quiet street well back from the beach. We have lost good long term neighbours and now are on endless rotation with strangers renting large houses which once would have been perfect accommodation for long term tenants. The owners live elsewhereone lives in Queensland and is not receptive to our concerns, re noise and the erosion of our great little community. Smaller places and rooms are often now ‘AirBnB’ rentals. There just isn’t much available for residents anymore as we increasingly live in ‘the Byron BRAND’. I even read an article where our Green Mayor called it that! As to the ‘magic’. Sorry to sound cynical, but it left at least five years ago.

On Friday tensions and exaggerated expectations can lead to a breakdown of communication. Saturday morning is as good time for problem-solving, but by Saturday evening you might feel electricity in the air! The time leading up to the Full Moon in Aries on Sunday afternoon is highly strung and impulsive; please slow down and cultivate patience to avoid erratic behaviour and accidents. Venus moves into philosophical Sagittarius on Tuesday; adopting a higher perspective is very appropriate since we are also dealing with a Mars/Pluto conjunction (in Capricorn), which is exact on Wednesday evening. The time leading up to it might be strained by intense feelings, and issues about control and self-control might pop up. If you stay on top of this huge energetic wave you might be able to transform old habitual responses into a more up-to-date and satisfying expression of yourself. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The need to be in charge might be overwhelmingly strong this week with the Full Moon in your sign and the 4 of Disks drawn. There is nothing wrong with being in control of your own experience and setting clear boundaries, but when it comes to pulling others into line you might evoke strong resistance and maybe alienation.

h

Taurus The Sun symbolises bright, positive energy and great creativity as well as great people skills. This week you can be a shining example for how to turn difficulty into opportunity, and you might be able to inspire friends, family or colleagues to adopt a more positive attitude and outlook.

i

Gemini The twins like to move fast and rather spontaneously, but this week you are challenged to adopt a very practical and down-to-earth style. The Prince of Disks asks you to keep grinding away on all the little, boring, mundane tasks and responsibilities, in order to move on to more exciting and adventurous times. From little things big things will grow...

j

a

Libra With the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter in your sign and the Wheel of Fortune drawn, Lady Luck is definitely on your side! This is the week to change your course for the better, so look out for opportunities. You might be ready for a pleasant weekend trip over the Full Moon time, or maybe feel motivated to beautify your home or garden.

b

Scorpio The Moon Tarot card casts its diffuse and at times deceptive light over everything you experience this week. You might feel anxious and confused and it is not the time to draw concrete resolutions from your intense feelings, rather take time off and immerse yourself into soothing nature or a creative outlet.

c

Sagittarius Your lust for life and new experiences is amplified by the Strength card. Make sure you don’t go overboard with it, since the astrological flavour of this week enhances impulsiveness and risk-taking. You are challenged to tame the wild, inner beast; be soft and strong while having a great time anyway!

Cancer The Mars/Pluto conjunction has the potential to affect your life circumstances profoundly. Maybe something you have been working towards for a long time is suddenly falling into place. The 4 of Wands represents the completion of one phase and the beginning of a new one. Even though you have been anticipating it for a while, it can be a bit of a shock when it finally arrives!

Capricorn The potential for transformation of your current circumstances, with the Mars/Pluto conjunction in your sign, is huge. The 6 of Disks drawn assists you in making a smooth transition when it comes to being more resourceful, applying yourself totally and manifesting more of what you want.

k

e

l

f

Leo The intensity of the Full Moon time might trigger you into giving yourself a hard time, focusing on all those things that have not been accomplished yet. The 9 of Swords symbolises a very self-critical and judgmental attitude. Recognising the quality of your self-talk is the first step to overcoming this negativity. Think about how you would talk to yourself if you were your best friend. Virgo This is a great week to embark on a new health or fitness regime; you have the commitment to keep it going. The 9 of Wands represents an inner strength that you can draw on this week. Physical and emotional wellbeing gives you the stamina, resilience and perseverance needed to remove any roadblocks from your path.

d

Aquarius When the Tower appears the only certainty is absolute uncertainty! Sudden changes, upheavals or out of control situations shake you and wake you up to new realities. To make room for the new, the old has to be dismantled. All you can do is surrender, go with the flow and be gentle with yourself and others...

Pisces The Princess of Cups embraces her sensitivity fully and learns how to trust her emotions and intuitions as her personal guidance systems. Smooth sailing through this intense week is more likely if you adopt the Princess’ way of simplifying things by ‘thinking with your heart’.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / LOVE BIG, PASS IT ON When in doubt, when you’re not sure what to do or what comes next or what the answer is, just do this: small acts of love. Because acting from love will hold you in a state of grace instead of a state of fear. Because love gives you a foothold when you feel like you’re slipping, or lost or afraid. Because showing love is a form of gratitude and gratitude is the highest form of prayer. Because being loving reminds you of what really matters and what is not important. Because acts of love reconnect you with you your truest Self. Because being loving is being compassionate, and compassion lifts the veil of our separateness. Because small acts of love add up to BIG LOVE. And because love is ultimately where the answer is. Go forth and make some love today. Something small and sweet and loving. A slow hug (we love those here in Byron!), a love letter (a txt counts), a batch of brownies, a smile, a hot bath (yes small acts of love applies to YOU too), a home cooked meal, the gift of pure presence and unbroken eye contact. Small acts of love every damn day keep the fear, the shame and the self doubt away. LOVE BIG. Pass it on.

>> A quick chat with a Byron local (or a local at heart)>> NICHOLAS VERSO Job Title: Film Director Instagram: @verseyverse Website: nicholasverso.com

What’s the inspiration for the Boys In The Trees film? Everyone has a friend they’ve never said goodbye to properly and particularly at the end of high school, so many friendships are severed and we never see those people again. So I wanted to tell a story that used that as the jumping off point. And in 1997, the last night of school happened to fall on Halloween so that gave me a lot of license to get quite playful… The best advice you ever received? I recently listened to Neil Gaiman’s speech about “make good art” and I think that’s definitely worth tracking down. I found it very inspiring. What should everyone try at least once in life? Coca Cola marshmallow ice cream. What is the best part of being involved with The Byron Bay Film Festival? We did a lot of vital post production out of Byron Bay with Will Gammon and the team at Cumulus VFX so it’s great their work can be seen by their local community. I’ve always loved Byron, it feels like a second home, and would seize any opportunity to be there as well. If I had one super power, it would be…. Flight. As nice as the staff are on Qantas, I’d love to be able to do it with my own wings. How did you get your start in the industry? I started off by badgering artists to let me direct music videos for them on Super 8 (because that was all I could afford). But that led to me making short films and one of them was seen by Mushroom Pictures who then asked me if I wanted to make a feature film. Who would be your dream actor or actress to work with? I’d actually really love to work with Winona Ryder. I grew up watching her films and seeing her again on Stranger Things made me realise how much I’d missed watching her. I’d have a lot of questions about Mermaids and Heathers. Who is on the guest list for your dream dinner party? Salvador Dali, PJ Harvey, Billy Wilder, William Blake.
