Tonight is the Christmas Uke-tacular with Naughty Santa and Tinsel Tones at the Mullumbimby ex-services club (Club Mullum). BYO ukulele to play along – you can download the songbook when you sign up for their newsletter. This super fun night costs just $10 for adults, $2.50 for kids and starts at 6:30pm. On Saturday the Byron Festival of Design is on at the Byron Youth Services Club. This is a free event, where you can come and check out all our incredible local emerging designer brands, musicians and food creatives. It’s an all day event, going from 8:30am until 7pm. If you have Christmas shopping to do, the Mama and Me Christmas markets are on in Mullum on Saturday too. You’ll be able to check out awesome sustainable products and services for families, plus cute mini fashion stalls. There’s going to be pony rides, face-painting, a petting zoo and all those kinds of things, too. For all those hosting Christmas parties, you might want to pop in to the Byron Services Club on Saturday evening. They are giving away a whopping 98 half hams…which gives you a pretty good chance of winning one don’t you think? Have fun! Photography Credit: Jake Morgan

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

My fiancé’s family is coming for the holidays and they have a peculiar way of greeting one another. They all kiss on the lips. All the time. Is it just me or is this a little too close for comfort? How do I steer clear of the trail of sloppy smooches without offending my soon to be in-laws? - Prudence

Dear Prudence,

I think if you were sitting on Father Christmas’ knee like I often do when I’m feeling prudish, and ask for advice, he’d say to spread the Christmas cheer with honesty rather than herpes. Yes, compromise is part of marriage (as well as a whole heap of patriarchal whoo ha) but no one wants to spend the holidays inside with a tube of Zovirax. When the future in-laws go in for the kill, you might want to tell them where your lips were the night before, or let your mother-in-law know that her base chakra definitely looks out of balance. When your father in-law attempts to land one you could use the opportunity to tell him that that all the food on the future wedding menu will need to be raw, vegan, fair-trade and made within 100 miles. Watch the beat drop and file the cold sore cream away. Merry Christmas.

Dear Keenwa,

I have been getting into my crystals lately but the only problem is there are so many to choose from. I can’t have them all on me, otherwise I will be carrying an extra couple of kgs around. Which one will bring me the most love and luck? - Crystallised

Dear Crystallised,

I’ve just consulted my amethyst and it has told me to guide you through a process. You might want to take your handmade pouch off from around your neck. I know you feel naked without it, but you’re going to need to shower soon, dude and pleather stinks when it’s wet. So, now I’m going to get you to fight your way through the chest hair and patchouli and place your hand in between your pecs, slightly to the left. This my friend, is your heart. It does sometime feel heavy, but it often feels really epic. It gives out guidance for free, and is available 24/7. Listen to it, it hold all the damn love and luck you’ll ever need.

What are your thoughts on “Jetty Not Sweaty”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents and you’re in to win a $25 Get Toasted voucher!

Jetty Not Sweaty, Frank Lucas _____________________________________ Build another Byron Jetty as the people are getting real sweaty ! It may bring back the sand to Belongil Beach. (I was told by a long time local a lot of sand existed when the previous Jetty existed) Rock walls could be devastated by a big storm and end up all over the place and they are breeding ground for rats and snakes. A jetty would give people with disabilities a chance to get out to see and feel the ocean close. Perhaps Kelly Slater may like to put up some capitol and I suppose a toll could be charged to cover costs. I was told by a Byron Council employee that a study was already carried out and the best place is supposed to be off from Clarks Beach where the café exists due to the prevailing currents. A ladder could be installed to allow people to get away from the sharks that people seem to be so worried about lately.

Congrats Frank, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. Country Charm, Anonymous _____________________________________ I lived (until last week) on a winding country road with wild flowers growing along the roadside, very sweet... and all we ever needed was to have the potholes mended. Suddenly, the road gnomes appeared and flattened the lovely bushes as they widened the road, creating guttering and smooth berms...but why? We live in the country, it’s fine for roads to wind and be lined with bushes and wild flowers. Why is this urbanisation being carried out? I reckon most country people would think this is a waste of money, and in an area where people are educated and vociferous, it might be a good idea to consult with them first to discover the values of the local people, and how they want their rate money allocated.

Many people find the week before Christmas stressful, and this Friday might prove to be one of those days when you want to get much done, but things don’t work out the way they are supposed to. The Moon is void of course all day and Mercury is very slow, preparing to go retrograde on Tuesday. This retrograde period is in Capricorn, the sign for ambitious achievements; therein lies the cause of great frustration, even more so because Mercury lines up with Pluto for a week of intense, internal pressure. Communication can also be challenging; there might be moments of trying to get your point across, while not noticing how self-absorbed you are right now! On Monday opinions and judgments can be rather harsh; think twice before you speak out. Any thoughtless comments can backfire throughout the next few weeks. Mars moves into Pisces on Monday evening, hopefully invoking more sensitivity and compassion. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries Things are looking good for the Ram this week; with the Knight of Cups, every action is an expression and an offering from your heart. Your gift to others might come in the form of good news that you deliver, or it might just be the time, energy and undivided attention that you give to your loved ones.

h

Taurus Keeping a balance between work and recreation is most important this week. The Temperance card asks you to avoid any excess and find a way to temper and integrate any seeming polarities and paradoxes in your life. An equilibrium is achieved when work is fun and time off is productive.

i

Gemini The Ace of Cups is the big gift of the open heart; it describes the principle of ‘as above so below’ or ‘as inside so outside’. Let your heart show the way, express your feelings accurately and act with the uppermost emotional integrity, so that others know exactly where you are at.

j

Cancer The Moon Tarot Card is the quintessential Crab card; there might be fluctuating moods and emotional high and low tides that take you on a deep journey of soul searching. Just remember that in the elusive lights and shadows of the Moon, everything might appear differently this week than your reality may look next week.

k

a

Libra The 10 of Wands implies that you might have been overextending yourself and shouldering extra burdens for the sake of harmonious interactions. This week you might feel taxed to the limit and about to spit the dummy. When you feel the need to remove yourself from oppressive situations remember that they were your choice in the first place and no one ‘made you do it’.

b

Scorpio The Ace of Wands is one of the high-energy cards. You might feel inspired, enthusiastic, confident and full of courage to charge forward and manifest what you want. Or you might be feeling like a volcano ready to explode. Holding back is not an option right now; it’s more a matter of consciously directing the flow of your red, hot energy.

c

Sagittarius This week you are challenged to examine your innermost motivations and analyse what drives you to make certain choices and commitments in your life. The Prince of Swords would like to inspire you to examine your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes and liberate yourself from outdated habits and self-sabotage.

d

Capricorn The 5 of Disks indicates that you worry far too much and that you are trapped in a cycle of negativity. From this vantage point the world looks bleak; times are hard and support is missing. The antidote to this downward spiral is the attitude of gratitude. Try it, even when it’s difficult at first; it will brighten your day!

Leo The 3 of Cups promises a week of abundant and heartfelt communication; socialising and networking. Supporting friends and family might be more important than getting things done. Be mindful on Monday and remember that enjoyable relating is always a two-way street of giving and receiving.

Aquarius The Ace of Swords is the big gift of clear thinking, direction and action. The times of confusion and doubt are over; you might have some important insights, a new awareness or an ‘aha’ moment. This is a great week for creative thinking, brain-storming, writing, editing or research.

l

f

Virgo The 2 of Cups represents love in action; whatever activity you are involved in, feeling appreciative of yourself and having compassion for others provides great connection and inclusiveness. This might be a potent week for healing painful relationships and moving towards unconditional love.

e

Pisces The Queen of Swords challenges you this week to face the truth and then tell it as it is for you. Direct, honest and forthright communication is the way to deal with any grievances. Being upfront and having clear boundaries helps you to avoid the trap of confusion, guilt and disempowerment.

BYRON BAZAAR

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / BE AVAILABLE TO BE INSPIRED Here’s the deal: Inspiration can’t find you sitting at a cramped, dark hovel of a desk for 12 hours a day, or watching some shitty prime-time soap opera, or gossiping, or stifling your feelings, or pushing yourself harder to be perfect. Inspiration finds you with your hair tousled, back on the earth, eyes gazing across the open sky. Inspiration finds you in truthful, candlelit conversation with wildhearted kindreds. Inspiration finds you at the bottom of a tea cup and the last sentence of a good book. Inspiration finds you in the throes of fully witnessing what you’re feeling. Inspiration finds you with feet bare and your face turned to the sun. Inspiration finds you when you’re truly absorbed in the moments of your life. Inspiration finds you holding a pen or a paintbrush. Inspiration finds you in a state of surrender, laying flat on your belly, palms upturned. Inspiration finds you when you move your body joyfully. Inspiration finds you when you get still. Inspiration finds you when you listen. Inspiration is waiting to rise up, to flow through, to spark a thought-thunderbolt or dash down from the heavens. You just have to be available to receive it. Create the conditions for creativity to flow through you. You already know, intuitively, what the conditions are. So make space and make it happen. Invite inspiration into your life. Be available to be inspired.

>> A quick chat with a Byron local (or a local at heart)>>

PAUL CASPIS Job Title: Actor, Singer Website: paulcapsis.com Facebook: /paul.capsis

What do you most love about Byron Bay? My first time in Byron was very special, I loved the vibe, the people and the physical beauty. Raes on Wategos is a great spot. The first song you remember singing or performing? My wonderful primary school teacher Miss. Haskel encouraged me to perform and dance to “Popcorn”. Another teacher Mrs. Vera Hull encouraged me to sing Bessie Smith’s (the empress of the blues), “Nobody Wants You When You are Down and Out.” Which artists (dead or alive) would you like to perform with? Patti Smith is my first choice. Janis Joplin, Judy Garland too, I’d love to watch them perform as well. Who has been your biggest inspiration? My Grandmother, I wrote a play inspired by her called “Angela’s Kitchen” which has toured Australia. Your favourite city to travel to? New York makes me feel alive and that anything is possible. London is similar and I love the multiculturalism of it there. Also Vienna, Hong Kong and Melbourne too. What’s your favourite cabaret? Not quite cabaret, but Boulevard Delirium that I performed in. It was created in Vienna by Barrie Cosky and toured in Vienna, Sydney and Melbourne. What’s on your bookshelf? Currently, “Lions and Shadows” by Christopher Isherwood. The last book I read was “Master of Ceremonies: A Memoir” by Joel Grey. What can we expect to see at “Addicted To The Night Life?” Lots of songs and fun, energy, all my favourites including Amy Winehouse to Judy Garland. I am hoping to bring more high energy to this show than my previous shows.
