Around Town This Week

Looking for a good reason to go out tonight? Head down to Woody’s Surf Shack, where Club Raiders will be hosting a fundraiser for Karime Baylis, a local aspiring DJ whose brand new studio equipment was stolen during a home robbery several weeks ago. A contingent of local DJs have lent their support to the cause, with great prizes to be won thanks to a bevy of local businesses. Entry is just a fiver, with proceeds going to the replacement of the equipment required by the disabled 19-year-old to continue his studies at SAE Byron. If you’ve always wanted to pursue a passion project, clear your diary on Saturday arvo for Pursue Your Passion. The third annual half-day event at Byron Community Centre, MC’d by TV personality Shelley Craft, is designed to provide support, encouragement and advice for people looking to pursue their creative callings. Come Saturday night, it’s your last chance to catch the Bangalow Theatre Company’s production of Little Shop of Horrors at the A&I Hall at 7:30pm, while in Byron, Sydney dance band Jagwa Ma will be playing at Secret Garden. Come Sunday, Coco Republic is back with its monthly alfresco party in Belongil. DJs will hit the decks from 2pm at the all-ages, shoes-optional shindig, with great deals on drinks and food at Belongil Bistro until late.

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

MEAT Me Halfway, Anonymous In response to VEGEtarian (issue 122), I think your opinions on vegetarian bacon and sausage, being named after meat products is not #fakenews but more so #fakemeats. I mean, why can't vegos have vego sausages? Who said sausages are just for carnivores? Why can't vegans wear leather shoes? The #alternativefacts are - it is a two way street for both plant lovers (I mean plant killers) and beast eaters. Is it time for equality and beef tofu on the menu? Talk about global warming (or is it called climate change now). #truefact: plants create oxygen, but animals (cows especially) produce temperature raising CO2 (cos’ they fart a lot). For the record, last night, I had a balanced meal of meat and vegetables making me both a vegetarian, vegan and a meat eater. P.S. Please don't print my name as I fear a vego may hunt me down with a butcher's knife. Congrats MEAT Me Halfway, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “MEAT Me Halfway”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

Tricky TRIVIA

1. Amazonian butterflies drink turtle tears. True or False Dear Keenwa, It's stinking hot! We still have the birthing pool set up on the deck from our son's birth a month ago, I was thinking of throwing the older kids in there to cool off. Too hippy? We also don't vaccinate? - Hot N' Hippy Dear Hot N' Hippy, I'm assuming the placenta dregs and the birthing water are still inside? Perfect. That's four weeks of organic fermentation girlfriend, your little one's guts are going to love it. Obviously don't let them near it 'til you give the pool a good sanitary clean out. I suggest tapping into last week's full moon lunar eclipse and push the pool out under the night sky, walk around clockwise or anticlockwise 100 or so times (dammit, I can't remember everything), waving some kind of crystal around. Leave it out to bake overnight, then it'll be on like Donkey Kong for young and old as of first light the next day. Yeah mama.

2. How many brains does a leech have? A. 11 B. 32 C. 44 3. Gandhi has been nominated 5 times for the Nobel Peace Prize, how many times has he won? A. 0 B. 2 C. 5 4. Flamethrowers are legal in how many of the United States? A. 25 B. 37 C. 49 5. The woman on the Australian $20 note was a cross dressing, horse stealing, violent convict. True or False Answers on page 18.

Dear Keenwa, I love to have a drink after work when I get home to ‘wine’ down but my housemates don’t drink. I feel like they are judging me as they down their homemade kombucha. Should I keep my drinking to the pub or start drinking wine out of a teacup? Help! - Wine Down Dear Wine Down, Next thing we know you'll be eating your non-vegan meals at the bus stop a street away, and hiding your fluoride toothpaste in a recycled jam jar. We know what Nirvana had to say about wine, that it should be eaten. Naked. To be happy, happy, happy. They also mentioned that a good friend is someone that lets you come as you are, as you were, as they want you to be. In mud or bleach. Whatevs. You must be so happy to have found your friends. Just don't shave your head, because you might feel lonely. i.e, keep the beard and topknot and you can drink your wine. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

H E A V I L Y M E D I TAT E D with

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - REALISE THAT YOU ARE ALREADY COMPLETE AND YOU BECOME FULLY REALISED If you struggle with feeling incomplete or lost or not-enough, fret not. You aren't incomplete or broken or missing any pieces. It's just that you haven't fully awakened to your full, in-born potential. Perhaps you've been pushed down, stifled or suffocated. Perhaps you have been shaped and moulded into something other than your you-est you. Every time you were told to be quieter or louder, more demure or more brave, smarter or to downplay your wits, not so serious or more serious, thinner or heavier. Another layer. Every time you were made to feel that you weren't pretty enough or that you should be ashamed of your beauty, every time you were told to tone it down, to be less bold, or to stop being so meek. That's another layer. Every time someone shushed a raucous round of laughter or told you not to sing, or said your personality was too big or scolded you for being inappropriate or laughed at your question or raised an eyebrow at your dance movesanother layer. Every perceived failure, every moment of shame, another layer. And so we learn to value the propaganda of others' beliefs and opinions (which are almost always crimson-tinged with their own fears, insecurities, shame and I-am-not-enough stories) above the untainted information of our own inklings, instincts, intuitions and blissful leanings that are the shape of your soul. The shape of your soul is there, unchanging. Waiting to be unearthed and discovered. Waiting for you to chip away at the false walls, ticky-tacky siding, layers of protection that have been caked on over the years to form a facade that takes the shape of who you think you're supposed to be and betrays the shape of who you really are. So don't fret that you're incomplete. Don't seek outside of yourself. It's all already here. Your only work is to unearth yourself from the layers of bullshit you've been dutifully building up as facts in the case for your notenoughness. Take an axe to it. Tear it down. You will work softly at first, timid and unsure. But as you scrape back the layers, you'll pick up the scent. Your work will become fervorous, joyful, focused yet free, like a horse galloping home through a familiar, open field. Realise that you are already complete and you become fully realised. It's that easy. It's that hard.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

SOL CLEANSE COLLECTIVE

Phil the Juice Fairy - @solmix_byron Tell us, what is the juice craze all about, and does it work? It’s all about the juicy goodness :) Cold Pressing is simply the most effective extraction process for maximum yield of fruit and veges. It dates back to caveman days - makes you strong. Having a juice or two daily, for sure. You won't find a better drink out there. Doing a juice cleanse – give it a nudge – you tell me. Sustainability is important to Sol, what are you guys doing to support this? Spend a shed load with local, organic farmers. Use and recycle glass bottles only. Minimal waste strategies applied. Employ local legends. Best place to get outdoors in Byron? The Pass, late summer, golden hour, beer in hand. You're also quite heavily involved in the local community, what other projects have you got on the side? Currently – sponsor of Byron Bay Surf Festival and organiser of Coco Republic. Plus talking, I love a good chat. What can we expect at a Coco Republic party? It gets better every time. The response from the locals has been epic. Next event is a Sunday sesh so expect a lot more dance moves coming out earlier in the day. Good times, good vibes – that’s all we want to create. Why have a local’s party every month? We’re the ones who make this town insane to live in – so let's celebrate it together. Nothing better than rocking up to a joint and knowing everyone there. Am I going to fit in better if I dress up? Who doesn’t. You party better when dressed up. FACT. Plus, we have the crew from @thepartyshirtpeople onsite if you forget. Can you still party and be healthy? For sure..look at me. Moderate the moderation, balancing the balance, we all know how important it is to have fun. Look at people’s faces when they’re dancing or having a laugh together, what’s healthier than that. Just mix ya booze with cold pressed juice then I’ll see ya at the lighty for sunrise. Dead or alive, who would you have a juice with? Ha, tough one… so many legends have graced this earth. I guess my grandad, he passed away a few years back and I’d be stoked to hear his advice and have a laugh. He’d have a beer though.

You can catch Sol at the next Coco Republic party on 19th Feb at Envirotech, Belongil. Check their instagram for more details @cocorepublic_byron

Thursday is the perfect day for inspired teamwork and cooperation on a project that make this world a better place. The good vibes linger on during the next few days; brilliant and highly idealistic ideas can be conceived, courtesy of a Mercury/Mars sextile which adds a bright sparkle to everything. On Saturday the Sun moves into Pisces, high-lighting creativity and our deep connection to Mother Nature during the next month. From Monday onwards we have to deal with a challenging Mars/Pluto square from Aries (the warrior archetype) to Capricorn (the executive). This aspect is exact on Wednesday and it implies explosive energy that aggravates conflicting interests concerning money, power and resources. A Mercury/Uranus sextile on Tuesday increases the urgency to implement new ideas or to throw a spanner into the works of your opponent. Since we are still between eclipses, rather sudden and unforeseen events can unfold. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries You might feel busy with many projects but your real work this week is the art and craft of relationships. With the Lovers Tarot card plus Venus and Mars in your sign, you are asked to put your energy into finding common ground and smoothing out differences with loved ones, while not deserting yourself. Not an easy task!

h

a

Libra With the 6 of Disks drawn, success is a given. It comes not only through hard work and determination, but is a result of your inner attitude of authenticity, resourcefulness and your willingness to share your knowledge and experience. People appreciate you and you might be asked to offer advice as a mentor or teacher in your field.

b

Taurus With the Star card drawn there is a glow of confidence and radiance around you. Other people recognise it too and yet, when they try to put you on a pedestal, you humbly just hop off to continue your work. You would keep doing what you do even if no one takes any notice, because you love the flow of your creative outpourings; they nurture you from within and give you strength.

Scorpio Instead of soldiering on and pushing through challenges, the 4 of Swords suggests letting go of your preoccupations and taking time off to step back, retreat, rest and recuperate. This way you can avoid being mentally overwhelmed, and sidestep stress. The results are renewal, regeneration and a new perspective.

i

c

j

d

k

e

Gemini The 10 of Disks speaks of outer success and wellbeing; it is true that all you are enjoying now is of your own making. At the same time you know that the source of all your visible affluence is your innermost alignment with the principles of prosperity and abundance, which is the true foundation of your success in the world.

Cancer The Crab is known for a rather defensive default attitude, and the Princess of Swords, combined with Venus and Mars in the warrior sign of Aries, may result in imagined attacks and super-sensitive reactivity. Through becoming conscious of your first impulses and slowing down your response, you can choose between acting constructively or destructively.

Leo The 8 of Swords represents mental confusion, edginess and frustration. You might feel trapped by inner turmoil and unable to make clear decisions. If you project this energy outward, you can convince yourself that someone else is unduly interfering in your affairs, which you interpret as an insult on your personal freedom. Regardless of the circumstances, it is better to postpone any important decisions until next week.

l

Virgo The 8 of Wands symbolises direct communication and swift action. Don’t worry too much how other people will respond, just trust yourself, your intuition and your instincts. You draw opportunities towards you if you keep an open mind, think outside the box and stay away from old, habitual reactions.

Sagittarius The 3 of Swords represents the tendency of the mind to rework the old bones of the past when confronted with present emotional pain. This habitual response just intensifies your hurt feelings and pushes you into isolation rather than connection with loved ones. Even if you feel let down, remember to focus on recovery, and reach out to friends.

Capricorn The Ace of Cups symbolises the accomplished journey from the head into the heart. This week you are, more than ever, willing to let your heart show the way. Deep fulfilment is the gift that awaits you there. Any decision, action or communication reflects your ability to receive love and light, as well as sharing it.

Aquarius The Knight of Cups is often called ‘Prince Charming,’ he has charisma, is sensitive and gracious. If you embody him you might feel like offering your love to your chosen one with a grand and generous gesture, or maybe you are on the receiving side, and a romantic gift or great news are coming your way.

f

Pisces The Knight of Disks symbolises a hard-working person with lots of stamina; typically he is overworked and underpaid. Make sure that you get the recognition you deserve and don’t waste your energy in a project that is a lost cause. Most importantly take a break and reflect on your options when you feel exhausted; don’t sacrifice your health and emotional well-being.
