This weekend the vibrant town of Mullumbimby will come to life with the 9th annual Mullum Music Fest. The fun kicks off on Thursday night with the Opening Night Gala with Lior, Hat Fitz and many others playing. The impressive international and local line up is then spread over the next 3 days, across 8 delightful different venues. Another kind of festival will also be happening over the weekend. It’s the 3 Day Discovery Academy, part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. This is a free broadcast by startupacademy.org where you will be able to access tools to help you launch your new business idea. It’s all part of StartInno, the co-working space on top of 100 Mile Table, register now and get things happening. NORPA also have an interesting event coming up that you may want to grab tickets for this week. It’s called Dreamland and it’s will be on at Eureka Hall from November 23rd until December 10. It’s a dreamscape of life in regional Australia, told through physical theatre, dance and song with plenty of humour. You can catch the show at 8pm (or a 4:30 Saturday matinee) and enjoy some tasty Federal Smokehouse dinner from 6:30pm onwards. Have a great week everyone! Photography Credit: Carly Brown

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

I’m pretty sure my fiancé is cheating on me (and I’m positive that he’s a narcissist) but I’m in my late 30s and I’m afraid I’m going to end up an old maid. What to do? Bite the bullet and marry the dropkick or stick it out and risk rolling solo for the rest of my days? - Undecided

Dear Undecided,

As my man William said, “Prudence is a rich, ugly, old maid courted by incapacity.” Nothing quite says capable like emptying the entire house of your cheating beloved’s belongings into an outdoor fire pit. Light it up. Do not panic. You can still tie the knot. WITH. YOURSELF. Choose a pretty dress or whatever you feel damn fine in. Send out invites for an outrageous party. Don’t forget the gift registry as goddess knows you’re owed a few pressies after all those kids’ birthdays and kitchen teas. On the night, be sure not to go home with anyone besides yourself. Make sweet, sweet love to you. Repeat daily. You might be surprised who rocks up when you’re your own number one.

Dear Keenwa,

I work in a bar and sometimes I have to deal with some drunk idiots. How do I handle it when a customer is rude...without losing my job? - Piss Peddler

Dear Piss Peddler,

I’m assuming since you work in a bar, you know how to rock a super fresh mullet and look really good in Levi’s. The thing is though, do you practice your roundhouses often? My advice is to wind down your shift with a few carefully rehearsed kicks behind the bar to let the patrons know who is boss. Obviously to keep the real boss happy as well as your whisky allowance, you need to remember to be nice... until its time not to be nice. Then by all means rip the throat out of the pissy customer with your bare hands, and not only will you keep the establishment in order, you’ll have dear old Patrick Swayze fist pumping from his grave.

Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Weed Warior, Margaret Mead Feather _____________________________________

This is a huge thank you to the “Weed Warrior” who has been weeding The Cowper St. bush track, it looks great. He has uncovered rainforest trees, tree ferns and bangalow palms with no assistance. Sorry mate, don’t know your name but your work is appreciated. This is what community is about. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful commited citizens can’t chnage the world. Indeed it is the only thing that has.”

Congrats Margaret Mead Feather, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. Don’t Spoil The Lighthouse Walk, Walker n’ Talker _____________________________________

What’s the dealio with people spoiling the beautiful lighthouse walk? In recent weeks we’ve got people walking their dogs in the National Park areas, graffitti on the footpath saying “cull touros, not sharks” and adverts for a bikini sale stuck up. C’mon - the walk is a sanctuary for wildlife and us humans too, it is great to get out in nature and relieve some stress. I don’t appeciate worrying about dogs eating wallabies and koalas, mindless rants about tourists or seeing advertising here. Respect earns respect.

On Saturday communication is anything but clear due to a Mercury/Neptune square; it might be extremely difficult to distinguish truth from lies or to get to the bottom of an issue. Sunday is a marvellous day for socialising; it’s a romantic and sensitive day – love could be in the air! This energy could also work very well for a creative project or for a healing massage. A Pluto/Jupiter square is building up from Monday onwards; at the same time Venus is merging with Pluto in Capricorn. Social injustice and a global lack of tolerance are in the overall mass-consciousness and these often translate into intense but unfulfilled desires and powerlessness on a personal level. Frustration and power issues might be popping up everywhere. The Sun moves into Sagittarius on Tuesday; on the up-side this invites a more optimistic and generous attitude; however on the downside many people might come across in a self-righteous and opinionated way. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The Lovers Tarot card emphasises that the art and craft of relationships depends on clear and honest communication, as well as your general people-skills. This week you are ready to listen emphatically, and you are open for new solutions to old problems. Sunday is the perfect day for a deep and meaningful connection.

h

a

Libra The Ace of Swords heralds the gift of a new insight, awareness and mental clarity. This is a great week to make important decisions and to stick to them. Some great ideas might be born or you might have a sudden ‘aha’ moment that defuses all confusion and doubt.

b

Taurus The Queen of Swords demands that you face the truth as it is, in the most honest and astute way possible. Watch out for Saturday when truth and lies are difficult to distinguish. The more straightforward and upfront you are, the less you can get entangled in a web of confusion or manipulation. If possible postpone all important conversations until Sunday.

Scorpio The Fool Tarot card speaks of a new beginning; old worries and fears are losing their grip on you and you emerge with new courage and determination. Risk-taking and creative expression are favoured and it does not make sense to hold back any more. Go for what makes your heart sing...

i

Sagittarius The Universe (the World) is the perfect card for Sagittarius, who is always ready to explore new realities. Travel, moving house or starting a new project could be on the cards. As a natural visionary and adventurer this can be a very exciting time, just make sure you take care of details too and don’t move too fast!

Gemini The Sun, as a highly energetic and creative symbol, supports teamwork, partnership and collaboration. You might play a leading role in motivating others this week, just by the contagious optimism that you radiate. As you shine forth brilliantly your love for life, your joy and playfulness inspire anyone who comes in contact with you.

j

Cancer The Magician has great creative power and can make miracles come true; his most important resources are his ‘can do’ attitude and his sense for perfect timing. This week you can wield your magic wand with awareness and concentration to accomplish your goals and create new realities.

c

d

Capricorn This week you might see the world through dark and dim glasses and your first impulse is to blame other people’s behaviour for your experience. You might feel drained or burnt out from over-extending yourself. The 8 of Cups is a reminder to establish clear boundaries, and that it is up to you to abandon a situation that does not serve you.

Leo The 3 of Swords represents feeling hurt, lonely or isolated from those you love. You might have difficulty letting go of certain painful situations and moving on. Something might trigger you this week and create heart-ache, but it gets worse because it brings up old pain and sorrow as well. As soon as you become aware of this you can focus on recovery.

k

e

l

f

Virgo You might feel somewhat mentally overwhelmed this week; it is a good idea to take time off from all those preoccupations that are racing around in your head. The 4 of Swords suggests stepping back or off the ‘hamster wheel’, taking time to smell the roses and finding more inner equilibrium.

Aquarius The Ace of Wands symbolises the untamed, creative force that wants to break free and break out of the confinement of ‘ifs and buts’ that have been holding you back for a while. Now is the time to open up to greater possibilities, to believe in yourself and to actualise more of your potential.

Pisces The Wheel of Fortune inspires you to open up to unexpected opportunities and to manifest more abundance in your life. This is a turning point, and if you can let go of doing things in the same old way you have been used to, you can have a real breakthrough and alter your present course.

BYRON BAZAAR

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / YOU ARE WHAT YOU WORSHIP As the wise teacher, sage storyteller (and Byron Bay treasure) Rose Baudin says, “You are what you worship.” So pay attention. Take note. Where do you direct your devotion on the daily? What are your daily rituals of reverence? What do you offer yourself to? What do you glorify? Are you devoted to daily practices that uplift your life? Or are you in servitude to habits that tear you down? Is your daily ritual to plunge yourself into the whirlpool of social media, emails and news, information overload and an inevitable dynamic of comparison. Do you worship at the altar of the world of the Digitised Self? Do you worship at the altar of Not-Enough and offer yourself to Overwhelm? Or do you devote yourself to presence? Do you pay reverence to the richness of your Inner Life? As Annie Dillard put it, “how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” We become what we hold space for. So open your eyes and notice. Pay attention to what fills you up, what lights you up. And then notice whether you’re creating a place of worship in your life for what fills you up. Become mindful of the impacts of where you place your devotion, even the smallest rituals have big flow on effects, for better or for worse. You get to decide.

>> A quick chat with a Byron local (or a local at heart)>> VEET KAREN Business Name: Veet’s Vegan Cooking School Job Title: Facilitator and Head Chef Instagram: @veets_ vegan_cooking_school Website: veets.com.au Place of Birth: England What should everyone try at least once in their life? Cashew sour cream. If you are allergic to cashews then you must try our home made vegan mayonnaise. It’s so easy to make and is the bomb. Just realised you may not be asking about food here. Who is on the guest list for your dream dinner party? My beloved Makrand, Montaigne, Morrisey, Moby and Stic of Dead Prez, because they are all vegan. What food trend do you love or hate? I love good organic food and it is a toss up between a really good preservative free organic Indian curry, dhal and rice or a big salad with quinoa and puy lentils and lots of leafy greens. I love how popular the vegan diet is becoming. What’s your favourite cocktail? Margarita but I do just prefer a good quality sipping tequila. What’s your biggest pet peeve? People who tell me that they tried to be vegetarian but they just couldn’t cope without eating animals because they got too sick. It can take up to 6 months for your body to detox from eating animals so there is a good chance you may get sick when first giving up eating animals. With education and adopting an organic diet it is so easy for people to be vegan. There is a whole vegan body building movement right now. How do you find inspiration? My love of animals keeps me going. The thought of animals being murdered daily and the possibility that if I cook and teach people how to create incredibly healthy and tasty vegan food their might be a chance that a few animals lives are saved each day. The best part of my job is… That I get to work with great people. I really love the students that come through the training I run. I love what they have to offer in the classes and their willingness to incorporate more healthy vegan food into their diets. The most influential person in my career has been… Osho, through Osho’s words and meditations I have been able to face my fears and do the things I want to do rather than be afraid of the possible outcomes.
