Around Town This Week

Yet another Byron laneway celebrates a makeover this weekend in the form of Popped, a pop-up bar and restaurant to be held in the reinvigorated ‘Surf Alley’ off Jonson St. The launch event kicks off at 5pm on Friday, with live art, DJs, street food by Three Blue Ducks, green wall installations by Nikau and more until 11pm. Then from 12-3pm on Saturday there’ll be a series of impactful talks and surf yarns. Entry on either day is a tenner. On Sunday the fun moves to Bangalow for the annual Billy Cart Derby. Registration opens at 7am, with practice runs at 8am before racing begins down the main street at 9am. Be there for 2:45pm to catch the novelty race, followed by the celebrity race, with trophy presentations at 3pm.

POSTCARD TAROT READINGS

Fun, unique readings every Friday at Newrybar Merchants, other times by appointment. Contact Julie 0423 612 117 for more info & bookings.

If you’re looking to get out of town for the weekend, consider decamping to Halcyon House, which is hosting an exhibition of acclaimed Sydney raised, LAbased photographer George Byrne’s work from Friday through Sunday. Splurge on the Cabarita hotel’s weekend package and enjoy a four-course lunch at renowned in-house restaurant Paper Daisy with George and Sydney artist and art dealer Tim Olsen, who will share secrets about what to look for when buying art. Cheers!

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

IS THAT WINTER IN THE AIR, Quinn Axelsen Is it just me or are you feeling your soul awaken with these colder nights and fresh mornings? What sweet relief it is to feel the cool fresh breeze on your face, checking the surf with a warm coffee and a snug jacket. I for one welcome you cooler climate!

PLIGHT OF THE GREYHOUND, Janine Khosid Coming to Byron my biggest dream was to rescue a dog and give it a happy home. The plight of the Greyhound tugged at my heart and I had to do the right thing and rescue a Grey as 10,000 Greyhounds are being put down yearly because of injuries or simply they cannot WIN anymore.

After adopting my Greyhound, we were attacked by an off-the-lead XBullMastiff. Since the attack, our injuries have healed, but the mental trauma has been ongoing. Being an independent and strong willed woman, this attack has left me fearful from walking around my very own neighbourhood. When I see "off-the-lead" dogs, my heart stops and my anxiety is on full alert - I cannot express what this attack has done to us. I am appealing to those owners that think it's "okay" to let their dogs roam around the streetsit's NOT. The recent attacks around Byron has been appalling and has left much devastation for those owners and their dogs. Be a responsible dog owner and let us all have peace of mind!

Congrats Janine, your submission has won you and a friend coffee and a sweet treat! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “Plight of the Greyhound”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

TEA TREE MULCH FROM THE FARM Tea tree mulch straight from the farm to you. Rough and fine chop minimum 6 metre loads and up $38.50 per metre delivered. Conditions apply. 0424 163 784 Dear Keenwa, I've been sleeping rough the past few months and eating from Liberation Larder and the Community Centre which I don't know what I'd do without. The thing is I've noticed a woman also using the services that eats out at restaurants on the weekends when the donations aren't available. She wears Birkenstocks. Cool or not cool?

CLOTHING ALTERATIONS + REPAIRS Local seamstress friendly + quick service incl hemming, zip replacement, mending, tapering & patching. Can pick up & drop off. Contact Ruby 0450 496 334

- Kitchen Divide Dear Kitchen Divide, The unpalatable truth is that Australia wastes one third or $20 billion of food each year. People go to soup kitchens needing something. Whether that be community, shelter, a sense of service, or tucker. Eating is about sharing food. But if it makes you feel any better, how she feels about what she is doing will affect her digestion, so if you notice any bloating or flatulence, she most likely has her own guilts, so she doesn't need yours. And she won't be able to blame the chef. Dear Keenwa, I've just moved to the area, but have lived all around the world. If Brazo's are known for saying all the right feels to get you hot and bothered, Italians for being smooth, and the Dutch for being kinky, what are Byron folk known for when it comes to loving? I can't seem to work them out? - International Flavour Dear International Flavour, I think the official term might be polyamory, but we don't like labels in these parts so you can simply call it going with the flow; and we like our yoga, our waves, and our kombucha with lots of it. In fact we don't do shit unless it follows our personal rhythm, which, like the sea tends to ebb and flow with the tide. So, if you're wondering why we don't return phone calls, or are seeing a few peeps at once, that's why, whatever you do don't wreck our vibe by asking. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - NO PLEASURE, NO TREASURE. Pain is not our only teacher. Pleasure (of the wholesome variety) can also light our way and offer meaningful clues. Pain teaches us to muscle our way through. We refer back to our scars like a roadmap, tracing our fingers over these memories as if they are the only way to Get Through Life. And yes, this can be a seemingly effective way to live. But remember this: pain teaches us how to survive. And pleasure teaches us how to thrive. Pain anchors us in the past, pleasure anchors us in presence. In other words: Pain armours, pleasure reveals. Pleasure teaches us how to surrender. How to move with trust. How to act intuitively. No pain no gain? I say no pleasure, no treasure. Pleasure reveals our natural inclinations and gifts and reminds us of what’s good and what’s easy (and while there’s a lot to be said about doing what’s hard, there’s also a great deal to be said about doing what’s easy.) Pleasure coaxes us into expansion, makes us brave, and lets our soul sing. Don’t hold onto past pain as proof of survival, don’t cling to it as if it’s a passport to future success. Do not overrate your pain. Do not bind yourself to it. Do not look upon it with indiscriminate pride. Honour your pain, yes. But do not shirk your relationship to pleasure in the name of the perceived bounties and safety of pain. Because (wholesome) pleasure is the way toward thriving.

On Friday the Saturn/Uranus fire trine, mentioned in the last few weeks, is exact, with Saturn retrograde and Uranus in forward motion. This aspect is here to stay for months; we are nudged to find a new balance between the old and new within ourselves and within our social structures. On Saturday a Venus/Jupiter opposition ignites lavish tastes, extravagant tendencies and, with the Moon in Pisces, over-indulgences of any kind can be very tempting. The Sun moves into communication wiz Gemini on Sunday, nevertheless relationships may encounter problems this week, due to a strenuous Venus/Pluto square which brings control and power issues, obsessions and compulsions into the open. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The The 5 of Cups describes the disappointed, empty heart and a feeling of fragility and vulnerability. This is not a place where the fiery Ram wants to dwell. Nevertheless if loss, regret or defeat hit you this week, make time and space to allow yourself to process and transform these feelings instead of just pushing them away.

h

Taurus The Queen of Cups is the archetype of

femininity; her love and grace radiate out into the world while she is deeply connected to nature and herself. This state of ‘beingness’ is highly appreciated by the Bull, but often there are too many things to take care of that get in the way. Make time for immersing yourself into deep communion with nature; it provides nourishment and healing for you.

a

Libra The Princess of Disks represents the earthy and creative power of the Goddess in her gestation phase. She is the mother of a new idea, a new identity or a new lifestyle. She initiates you into a new place of power and inner strength and she guides your creative intuition towards success.

b

Scorpio The World Tarot card brings liberation, renewal and a new perspective. You are ready to cast off old limitations and you won’t be restricted or held back by what other people think you should do. The choices you make show who you truly are –your integrity and your vision. Any endings and new beginnings bring more fulfilment and a positive outcome is guaranteed.

c

i

Sagittarius The Princess of Swords represents the fighting spirit in you. You are ready to fight for freedom, for a better world or for some old idols to be overthrown, and you broadcast your message loud and clear. Sometimes you might rebel just because you enjoy it; it is good to be aware of when that is the case....

j

Capricorn The 10 of Disks promises you the success that you have been waiting for. It may come as wealth, health or acknowledgment and recognition of your hard work. You might be enjoying creating lasting solutions to old problems and with that comes a new alignment with the principles of prosperity and abundance.

k

Aquarius The Knight of Swords symbolises your decisiveness and the desire to head off in a new direction. Right now you might not worry too much about the end result; you are much more focused at getting somewhere as fast as possible. As much as you act with certainty and passion, you might have to move the goalposts later on...

l

Pisces The 4 of Disks describes the personal empowerment that comes once you establish clear boundaries, without doubt and guilt. As you set your limits, people respect you for it and everyone knows where they stand. You may need to step into your assertiveness this week and you might find that it feels really good.

Gemini The Lovers is the quintessential Gemini card and with the Sun moving into your sign, relationships, their presence or absence, come into focus. You might learn more about the art and craft of relating this week, make new and interesting connections or find more unconditional self-love within. Cancer The 5 of Wands represents a habitual worry pattern that can drag you down and away from the present moment into various ‘what if’ scenarios of the future, or ‘if only’ regrets of the past. All this negative thinking can affect your mood and your energy levels. To find more inner balance you can consciously focus on gratitude for everything that is working out for you. Leo The Ace of Swords assists you to cut through any confusion or doubt this week and provides you with mental clarity. Therefore you are ready to make some bigger decisions, embark on a new direction or start a new project. Things will turn out well because of your inner alignment.

Virgo The 9 of Cups symbolises happiness and fulfilment as your most natural way of being. When you are alone – enjoy it. When you are with loved ones – enjoy it. When you have work to do – enjoy it, and when there is nothing more to do – enjoy that too. This week gives you more of what you want if you ask for it.

A Quick Chat With ...

EDDIE BROOK

Co-founder & Distiller @capebyrondistillery @brookiesgin

Why do you think there has been a gin revival in Australia and around the world? Gin has broken free from the perception of an 'old style' of drink or 'Grandmas Gin and Tonic'. People have begun to understand gin for what it truly is which is a deliciously balanced spirit that can mix with a number of serves and occasions. A lot of people don't particularly like the flavour of tonic however they have discovered the flavour and mixability of gin in many cocktails. Of course the calibre and quality of gin has stepped up. We have some really incredible gin produced from all over the world and now at our doorstep. Dead or alive, who would you have a gin with? Ernest Hemmingway. He was a lover of an icy cold martini and I'm sure could spin a tale or two. Where do you like to escape to in Byron? I am a foodie at heart and I love exploring the amazing produce, food and drinks on offer in our area. Bread Social for my Portuguese tart addiction, a coffee from Sparrow, afternoon food and drinks at Roadhouse and a few cocktails at the Bolt Hole would be close to perfection. Your family has spent a considerable amount of time restoring the rainforests in the hinterland, what noticeable changes have you seen? 31 years ago Mum and Dad (Pam and Martin) purchased a run down dairy farm on St Helena. The soils were poor, there were barely any trees and there was little wildlife. If I showed you the pictures from then you would find it hard to believe the immense change to the landscape. They set about planting Macadamia trees and a passion for rainforest regeneration was instilled in them. We have replanted over 35,000 subtropical rainforest trees and the land is teaming with life. Wildlife such as native birds, echidna, wallaby and platypus have returned to the farm. From the rainforest that we have regenerated, we utilise a number of different botanicals. When we wild harvest we make sure that we have a minimal impact on the health of these plants in the rainforest and always ensure that we plant more than is harvested (if perennial). Our label that is printed on recycled sugar cane we have sustainable best practice at the forefront of what we do. Brookies are hosting a Gin Meets Beer event in collaboration with Stone & Wood and The Stock Pot Kitchen on the 21st May. All ticket sales and profits on the day will go to Mullumbimby and District Neighbourhood Centre to help flood victims. Go to when-gin-meets-beer.eventbrite.com.au for tickets.
