Around Town This Week

Always wanted to master the sacred art of stripping? Now you can, at the Taste of Love Festival (aka Australia’s biggest tantra fest) which will see Byron’s Community Centre morph into a giant love nest from Friday to Sunday. Somewhat more family-friendly, is the Girl to Woman Festival at Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre on Sunday. It has a program of workshops and forums designed to support and celebrate young women in the community, with yummy food by The Belle General and Belle Central Café, and Nourish Bulk Health Organics. The big one this fortnight, of course, is Australia Day, Invasion Day, a good day to eat lamb…or whatever you want to call it. Get up early next Thursday for the annual Rotary Club brekkie fry-up at Main Beach (7:30-11am) or pop along later for the Celebration of the Survival of Indigenous Culture (11am-2:30pm). Ballina RSL will be going all out with lots of free activities for kids, raffles, comedy acts, and more, while Mullum’s Ex-Services Bowling Club will be hosting the official Oz Day ceremony at 11am. Meanwhile, Byron’s Beach Hotel will be the place to catch the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown from noon on Thursday (get your votes in by the 23rd!). If you’re keen to start the party early, Melbourne rockers British India will be supplying the tunes at the Hotel Brunswick from 7pm on Oz Day eve. Have a good one!

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

Access for all (including Fido!), Anonymous Marvell Street is a Main Street in Byron. A sealed foot path runs the full length, from one end, nearer Tallows Beach, through the Recreation Ground, to the other end in town. Walkers, riders, prams, skateboards, walking frames, gophers, joggers, old and young, safely and happily travel the whole way. But not if you have a dog! No, with a dog on a leash, you can’t legally cross the Rec Ground, and must instead skirt around the Grounds on unsealed paths. People are being fined over $300 for walking their leashed dogs on the Rec Ground footpath. Unbelievable. This crazy ruling needs to be reversed, now! Congrats Anonymous your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “Access for all”? Keep the convo going! Dear Keenwa,

My Euro girlfriend of six weeks is going overseas indefinitely. We've really hit it off, but I've finally found a part-time job and an awesome share house. Should I stay or should I go now? - Love-is-like-a-box-of-chocolates.

Dear Love-is-like-a-box-of-chocolates, As Mark Twain so aptly put it, “there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” So, you could lock eyes over tacos and realise she's the one. Or you may realise on the backstreets of India that she has a narcissistic personality disorder that you somehow missed from getting to know her on insta. And now you're broken-hearted, lonely, homeless, and unemployed. But enough about me. I have to ask you if there's a theme here. If your last few chicks were all backpackers, it may be that you're a sucker for a travelogue love story or just shit-scared of intimacy. If she's your Jenny you'll always find your way back to one another. Somehow. If not honey, there's always the mother love from Keenwa. Please note: phone number in adjoining ad.

Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - PERFECTION IS OVERRATED

“Perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mink coat, pretending to be elegant when actually it's just terrified. Because underneath that shiny veneer, perfectionism is nothing more that a deep existential angst the says, again and again, 'I am not good enough and I will never be good enough.” - Elizabeth Gilbert We've been raised to sing the praises of perfectionism. To proudly label ourselves as a "perfectionist" and wear it as a badge of honor, a qualification. But just beneath the surface of all that achievement and polished "perfection" is the misery, loneliness and exhaustion of FEAR. So (as my mama would say) perfectionism is really just puttin' lipstick on a pig. It's not all that it's cracked up to be. It's a thinly veiled disguise for "I am not enough.” Marinate on that and see what shows up for you. Consider kicking the fancy shoes and mink coat of perfectionism to the curb. Get nude. Get free. Liberate yourself from the chains of perfectionism. Because you're already enough. Just as you are.

We are right in the middle of a very specific window of opportunity that will last until the 6th of February; big changes can be initiated and carried through while none of the planets in our solar system are in retrograde motion. The main themes of this week are relationships and creativity; with Venus and Mars still in touchy-feely Pisces, we might have to face the gap between our ideals and reality. On Friday and Saturday, while the Moon is in Scorpio, feelings can get very intense; a Venus/Pluto sextile encourages expression of this depth by connecting with others or through an art project. On Tuesday and Wednesday Venus unites with Chiron, and while we might feel our wounds around relationships acutely, there is great potential to take a step towards healing these wounds by exposing them to the light. This is also the perfect time to find compassion and forgiveness for ourselves as we recognise the painful patterns we have been holding onto, that make relating so frustrating at times. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries This may be an important week for the Ram to initiate big changes. The Knight of Wands represents your absolute readiness to take a leap of faith and to charge forward into uncharted territory. It all starts with shedding old beliefs and patterns, and gaining new insights that propel you forward.

h

a

Libra Even though you might be a social animal most of the time, this week the Hermit indicates that you feel the need to retreat and have some time alone. Maybe you want to concentrate on a particular project that takes a lot of energy or maybe you have a bit of soul-searching to do...

b

Taurus The 3 of Cups shines a very favourable light on partnerships and any group-related endeavour. Communication flows easily and a positive light-heartedness infuses the connection between you and others. This is a very nurturing, supportive and reassuring influence that leads to great outcomes.

Scorpio The 7 of Wands speaks of the need for courage and perseverance to achieve your objective, but you must also be prepared to accept that the pressure you apply on your opponent can also stress you out. You meet any challenging situation best if you assert yourself without being bossy towards others.

i

Sagittarius The Princess of Swords and the typical Archer have much in common – youthfulness, courage and a certain impulsiveness. You might risk a verbal argument this week, only to realise later on that you have been overreacting. Think about what your deepest motivations are before you act out and speak up.

Gemini With the 3 of Wands you are ready to expand

your horizons and explore new possibilities. Your willingness to step up and set a good example may encourage others to follow your benevolent leadership. Any project directed from this place surely leads to success!

j

Cancer The Priestess Tarot card highlights your environmental sensitivity. If you are surrounded by too much noise, pollution or toxicity, you might experience the overwhelming need to withdraw, retreat and recuperate. Immersing yourself into nature or a creative project is extremely nourishing right now.

k

Leo The Knight of Wands is one of the big movers

and shakers of the deck. You crave change and you are willing to make things happen fast. A clear and sharp mind is your biggest asset right now and because you act with certainty and confidence, doors you didn’t even know were there can open for you.

l

Virgo The 2 of Wands symbolises assertiveness and

a certain satisfaction that comes from wielding influence and power. However victory that is achieved by sheer willpower and determination, unless it’s at a sports event, might feel hollow and empty. It might feel better to aim for a win-win situation.

c

d

Capricorn The Ace of Wands promises a phase of material wealth and emotional security; both are eternally linked and dependent on each other in your reality. Enjoy this time of concrete results for your efforts and the fact that you are having a real-world impact that is measurable.

e

Aquarius With the 7 of Cups you might feel trapped in wishful thinking, procrastination or addictive patterns. One way to build determination and get motivated for change is to realise how you have been denying yourself inner freedom and self-determination in favour of dependence on outer stimuli which control your behaviour.

f

Pisces Focus is the magic word for this week; the 6 of Swords demands logical and rational thinking. With four planets (Venus, Mars, Chiron and Neptune) still in Pisces this might be a tough call, but if you are ready to see the bigger picture and want to start off in a new, exciting direction, you have to blend your receptivity with subjectivity and even objectivity.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

BRONWYN KIDD - DIRECTOR

Flickerfest International Short Film Festival How long has Flickerfest been around? Flickerfest celebrates its 26th year in 2017 as Australia’s leading Academy Accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival and its 19th year of screening in the Northern Rivers region. Flickerfest supports Australian filmmakers, why is this so important to you? Telling our own stories on the screen and encouraging Australian filmmakers to develop their careers is a really important part of our Australian cultural identity and Flickerfest is proud to be a platform for both discovering and supporting emerging talent and the Australian industry. Your favourite Australian film of all time? I love lots of Australian films. For classics, I love ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ and I’m also a huge fan of ‘Animal Kingdom.’ Favourite Australian Actor? Jackie Weaver is always great in everything and I’m also a huge fan of Miranda Tapsell who stars in our trailer. Where can we expect to see the finalist work after FF? We tour to 52 venues across Australia so after Mullumbimby you can catch us across the country. You can also check out favourite Flickerfest shorts from past festivals all year round on our ABC iview channel and on Virgin Australia inflight. Favourite thing to do in Byron? A cruise down the Brunswick River from Mullumbimby with my partner Shane in our tiny boat picking up oysters and prawns at Brunswick Fish Co-op and then a picnic and swim at Christmas Beach would be my perfect day. If someone wanted to get in to the film industry are there any websites or brands you recommend following for inspiration? Certainly coming along to festivals like Flickerfest and seeing other filmmakers work is very crucial to developing your craft and I would also suggest catching our shorts on ABC iview. Checking out local courses and activities such as what’s on offer at Screenworks and SAE is also another great way to start. Flickerfest will showcase their 2017 finalists at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall 27th - 29th Jan.
