Saving your pennies for Christmas? No worries. This weekend everything seems to be pretty much free. Catchy rock five-piece The Rubens are playing a free gig at both The Beach Hotel in Byron and the Brunswick Heads Hotel on Saturday night. It’s part of those Corona SunSets shows that are going around the country. Then on Sunday the Byron Spirit Festival is having a free launch event at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall from 3 to 7pm. You can partake in the Cacao Ceremony ($3), do yoga or kick back and enjoy some delicious food and live music. The event will end with ecstatic dance from 6 to 7pm with Hamilton and Deya Dova. Register on the website to attend as spaces are limited and bring your yoga mat. A Peaceful Place is also on this Sunday from 11am to 7pm at the Brunswick Heads River Soundshell. Bring a picnic blanket and your singing voice for a day of beautiful music. This event last year was a celebration of the life of local art professional Tony Llord and his wife and daughter have decided to continue holding the event. Entry is free and it’s an all ages, pet-friendly event. Enjoy! Photography Credit: Jake Morgan

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa
Dear Keenwa,
It’s my bubba’s first Christmas and I want to make it special and fun but I’m afraid of opening a can of consumeristic worms! I want the magic of the elves, minus listening to a lifetime of the “gimmies.” You feel me? - Conscious Cat
Dear Conscious Cat,
Two words for you. Vegan. Christmas. Start with a family forage for macadamia nuts. When you have a handful each, lay them out in the sun to dry whilst chanting prayers over the little guys. By the time the sun is setting you can help your baby hand grind the nuts into flour, with a stone in preparation for the evening Christmas meal of bush damper. Nothing quite brings family together like starvation, and with the added influence of sunstroke I’m sure all of you will be calling upon Santa’s fairies to whip up the Christmas cheer. Finish the day by popping the coals from the fire in a handwoven palm and present to your bub (if he’s still conscious) and voila! Magic without the consumerism. The beauty is that despite the fact that your bubba may be scarred for life, no animals would have been harmed.

Round And Round We Don’t Go, Glass Half Full _____________________________________
It is great to see roads improving around town thank you to all the ‘bitumen’. There are jokes about changing light bulbs but none about the time taken to finish the Massinger & Lawson roundabout, you know the half roundabout on the way to the lighthouse. I am sure there are reasons for the delay but c’mon - nothing like doing half the job. What’s the story there?
Congrats Anonymous, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. Roll Out The Welcome Wagon, S.J.P. _____________________________________
I hear a lot of whinging around town about tourists and traffic this time of year, and while I FEEL YOU that things are busier this time of year (no one likes a 20 minute commute to the Industrial Estate), what I don’t dig is the total lack of gratitude displayed by locals who earn their living and can afford to live here because of local tourism. Which is all of us! The reality is that whether you’re a tout for a tour company, a waitress, a doctor, a nanny, a politician or a yoga teacher, your paycheck is paid for by tourism. One way or the other, that’s the truth. Even if you think you don’t directly benefit from tourism, remember that your bills are paid by people who rely on visitors to keep their businesses afloat. This time of year it’s especially important to remember that we are all connected and that tourism is the main industry in Byron. If you don’t like it, sell up and move to Angourie. Have fun trying to earn a living there. And if you decide to stick around in Byron, be grateful, roll out the welcome wagon to our visitors and thank your lucky stars you get to live in such a magical place.

With five planets in fire signs and a Sun/Neptune square, take anything that presents itself on Thursday with a grain of salt. Emotions, opinions and convictions are exaggerated and it is difficult to discern the real from the unreal; events may take an unexpected turn. As the Moon moves into earthy Capricorn on Thursday evening we might find some more grounding, but a Mars/Jupiter air-trine on Friday can expand any idea to unrealistic proportions. It might promote over-confidence and a tendency to build castles in the air. On Saturday Mercury moves into Capricorn and brings us back down to earth; for a short while we have four planets in earth signs, all encouraging a practical point of view. Monday is a great day for initiating new business contacts or networking. Responding quickly and decisively to any opportunity brings guaranteed success. Wednesday can be a confusing day, the emotional tide is high and it is difficult to trust your feelings, better wait and see... For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
Aries A great week ahead for Aries; with the Queen of Wands drawn you definitely feel upbeat, optimistic and confident. You are discovering a new passion for life and extending your compassion to anyone you come in contact with. Your warmth and whole-heartedness can create very favourable first impressions and get you what you want!
h
Taurus The Prince of Swords is ready to set himself free from outdated thought patterns and habits. You might also be ready to perceive the world in a new way by letting go of things, ideas and preoccupations that have kept you busy, but unfulfilled for a long time.
i
Gemini The Twins might be trapped in too much thinking this week; the 7 of Swords represents the danger of the self-sabotaging mind, stuck in ‘yes – but...’ mode. You may feel like running away from your own doubts and might fear making wrong decisions. Rather than beating yourself up internally just wait things out for a while.
j
a
Libra The 6 of Cups symbolises the ultimate fulfilment that good relationships bring; giving and receiving is balanced, comes effortlessly and flows easily. Spending time with your lover, your family and your children is important this week, just because it gives you so much pleasure. Your emotional equilibrium can be very healing and rejuvenating for others.
b
Scorpio The Princess of Cups has much to offer, even though you might say that she is immature in the way she seeks emotional freedom. She is in touch with her emotions; she follows her feelings and hunches, and she has a willingness to express herself truthfully. You might feel inspired to let it all out and find rejuvenation too!
c
Sagittarius With the 5 of Wands you might experience hassles and roadblocks in your way this week. You react strongly to any limitation of your personal freedom and it gets extremely frustrating when you find that sometimes the source of your restriction lies within yourself.
Cancer The 2 of Cups symbolises love in action. You feel at one with yourself and you are an inspiration to others. Watching you, they realise that in any interaction with people, you consciously choose to move towards love and acceptance, rather than hate and fear. Your open heart helps to heal difficult relationships this week.
Capricorn You might have been over-extending yourself and now you feel taxed to the limit. The 10 of Wands symbolises the uphill struggle and a time when you experience much resistance. This week it is important to step back from your main objectives and give yourself some respite. Go and smell the roses for a while...
k
e
l
f
Leo The Strength Tarot card pictures you riding a lion! Taming the beast took a lot of courage and perseverance; now you totally trust yourself and that strong force within you. As you work as one, your energy levels are high and you radiate power and passion. A lot can be accomplished this week! Virgo The Knight of Cups is also known as the ‘Knight in Shining Armour’; he offers you the gift of good news, he is at your service and he brings encouragement. As you graciously accept his offerings, you can relax, be more spontaneous and unguarded.
d
Aquarius When the Moon Tarot card appears, nothing is clear or sure, and emotions can become very unstable! Take special care on Thursday; not everything is as it seems... On the upside your touchiness or moodiness can enhance your creativity, and art can turn out to be quite therapeutic.
Pisces The Fishes are the mystics of the zodiac; this week you are challenged to ‘walk the mystical path with practical feet’. The knowledge and wisdom you have acquired over time can be extremely helpful in resolving family issues. You might consider teaching, counselling or consulting as a new career path.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / BE SOVEREIGN IN YOUR SKIN There’s a lot of talk these days about lip injections and airbrushed asses. And though this might not be a popular thing to say, we gots to say it... WOMAN, you are not some frozen still life meant to be stared at like a specimen in an air-conditioned room. So please, do not distort your beauty. Bow not to the gods of botox and chemical-laden cosmetics. Bow down to your vitality and health. Recognize your innate capacity for beauty. The beauty which radiates from every cell when you are OWNING your place as an exquisite ALIVE creature in this world. When you are valuing all that you are. When you see your most valuable features as being compassion, courage, humour and resiliency. Not a creaseless forehead or a plumped up pout. Reclaim your physical features. Honour the stories they tell, the heritage they speak to. Be proud that you’ve been on earth long enough to have a fucking wrinkle. Them wrinkles mean you’ve been around the block and by now you’ve got some wisdom written in your bones. And besides, those laugh lines look good on you, girl. So smile. And. BE. YOU. TIFUL. Be sovereign in your skin. And if you choose to distort your natural beauty, know this: you distort the reflection of the beauty in the world around you. How you show your face matters. How you reveal yourself counts. You are an example. You are a reflection to all of us- of what is beautiful, what is worthy and what matters in this world. Just as the moon is reflecting the sun. You are a woman reflecting the world.
