Around Town This Week
We’ve already started pulling our ‘winter’ clothes out of storage, but apparently summer doesn’t officially end until this Sunday, when the Byron Bay Golf Course will play host to the Byron Bay End of Summer Party. Featuring Canadian DJ duo Blond:ish, the event from Byron’s Sounds Good Soundsystem kicks off at 3pm and wraps by 10pm, giving you plenty of time to catch a few z’s before work on Monday. Tuesday, of course, is Anzac Day, which will be commemorated around the region with marches and services in Byron, Ballina, Bangalow and Brunswick Heads. If you fancy a few rounds of two-up afterwards, get yourself over to the Beach Hotel for 1pm, or to the Bangalow Hotel or the Ballina RSL for 2pm. Come Wednesday, Sea Shepherd and Marine Debris Campaign Byron Bay will present feature-length documentary A Plastic Ocean at Byron Theatre at 7pm. Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time,” the powerful documentary follows an international team of adventurers and researchers on a mission to uncover the shocking truth about what lurks beneath the surface of our oceans, and highlight the (dire) consequences of our global disposable lifestyle. Powerful stuff.

Can we please talk about the potholes in the A&I? I have been noticing that they have been slowly covering them up in and around town but driving down Banksia Drive is a nightmare! I filled my tyres up with air and within 1 week they had gone down drastically. Not to mention the long term effects this will have on my suspension. And I'm going to take a guess and say the Shire council will not pay for my earlier than necessary repair works! It’s so dangerous! What’s even more dangerous is the amount of people trying to swerve to avoid them and as a consequence almost causing a serious accident. I might start and gorilla club that goes around town at night and fills pot holes, anyone keen to join? Must BYO pot.
PROUD LOCAL, Anonymous I just wanted to say thank you to all the locals for the amazing effort done to help support those who were affected by Cyclone Debbie. Dear Keenwa, I'm trying to have some fun after coming out of a long-term relationship a couple of months ago. I'm a serial monogamist trying to keep it cool in the dating pool, but... Australian men. Is this the Byron curse? Has the constant influx of new backpackers to get jiggy with on the tables at Cheeky's deleted any need for making an effort? Why are they hooking their arm into mine whilst leaving the Rails, am I just another Scandinavian trophy? How do I break this curse... Or should I just cave, and forget about my tainted heart? - Arm Candy Dear Arm Candy, A simple little ritual will sort this one out babes. Grab ya passport. Book yourself a little getaway somewhere outside of Byron (and Brazil). Go sightseeing. Import. Return home and live happily ever after. Keep said import away from Cheeky’s. You’re welcome. Dear Keenwa, The other day I dared walk into a local cafe with the intention of ordering lunch. The chick behind the counter looked at me with her eyes but made no effort to greet or serve me. After ten minutes I interrupted her boring convo with her workmate and asked if I might be able to order. She rolled her eyes and sighed loudly. WTH? Do I hail from outta space or does she? - Dying of Hunger Dear Dying of Hunger, I think it's really up to the consumer to check in with their own higher guides before expecting to be served. Maybe she was on her moon and knew there was something a little off with you. Did you balance your chakras before entering the establishment? Have you been taking proper care of your organs, engaging in regular juice fasts and detox? People are mirrors man, you might want to take responsibility for yourself, before you start expecting others to be responsible. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - THE DIVINE IN YOU LOVES YOU TOO MUCH TO SEE YOU STAGNATE. - YOGARUPA ROD STRYKER When it feels like an uphill battle, or like things will never change, or that it's all too hard, remember this. The divine (the universe/nature/goddess/god/all of these) loves you too much to see you stagnate. This path that you're on, this work that you're confronted with, this pain you're looking in the eye, this challenge that's looming...this is all a clarion call, a beckoning to grow, to progress, to move forward. THIS is a summons from the divine. To do the work, to unravel the knots and smooth out the creases, to rewrite an old story, to make a different choice. To stretch yourself and rise up to the next level. To continue on the path of your own becoming. Does nature leave budding flowers to wither away as they are, frozen in an unrealised state, and say "good enough, that'll do"? Does winter linger in perpetuity? Does the moon yawn at the sea and think, "maybe tomorrow." No. Just as nature expects the ecstatic bloom to burst forth from the bud, just as spring leaps forward from the depths of winter, just as the moon sings up the tides, so does the divine call out to you, summoning your greatness, your growth and your full potential. This is the pulse and the power and the momentum of love that flows from the divine to you. So reframe your labouring and your suffering as a summons from the divine. As a loving clarion call, asking nothing of you other than that you fully become yourself.

Some relationships may still feel tender and raw after all the soul-searching of last week. This Friday a Venus/Saturn square ignites inner tensions again. It may help to investigate what you long for most in relationships, may it be safety, stability, comfort, fulfilment of your desires, equality...? Pondering this might assist you to navigate the strange undercurrents and doubts that may come up. Also on Friday, Mercury retrogrades into feisty and, at times, self-centred Aries and is building an analytical, but inspiring fire trine to Saturn (exact on Monday). This trine will be with us for two weeks because Mercury moves extremely slowly. Unexpected circumstances can lead to possible delays; you might have to change your travel plans and stay flexible. The next two weeks are the ideal time frame to review any long-term plans and commitments to people and projects; therefore you don’t have to jump to quick or premature conclusions right now! Take your time to think things over... For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
Aries The Ace of Swords brings you the great gift of clarity in a time when many people are dealing with confusion and doubt. They might look to you as a pathfinder and natural leader who can assist them to find their own clarity. You also might have a ‘Geistesblitz’, which is an ‘aha’ moment or insight that solves some ongoing or recurring problems.
h
a
Libra The Temperance card suggests an inward journey this week, contemplating the delicate equilibrium of inner harmony that results in peaceful acceptance of what is. Any polarised problems or situations need to be looked at from a higher perspective. Find what the two opposites have in common to create more balance and workable solutions.
b
Taurus The Knight of Disks depicts a worn-out warrior. The emotional rollercoaster of this week might leave you feeling tired, exhausted or upset, especially if people or schedules change frequently. The more you hang on to tried and true strategies, the worse it might get because right now the universe asks for flexibility in mind and action.
Scorpio The Prince of Disks knows what he wants and a combination of determination, will-power and perseverance grants him success every time. This week it pays to move slowly but strategically. Attend to all the small things that can be completed before you are ready for another big move in a month’s time.

d
k
e
Gemini The Wheel of Fortune appears when it is time to gain a greater perspective and expand your outlook beyond the obvious. As you probe into your innermost motivations you become more aware about new opportunities that may alter your present course. A sudden windfall is also possible. Cancer The 4 of Cups challenges you to re-evaluate your situation. Wishful thinking may keep telling you that your cup is still more than half full, but is that really true? What part of yourself do you sacrifice or deny for the sake of security and stability? If you feel limited or subdued, it is up to you to make the necessary changes. Leo The Hanged Man’s advice for this week is to suspend urgency and to pause to reflect on your situation and circumstances. This may be much more difficult than just acting on impulse, but you save yourself trouble in the coming weeks if you take time for introspection. There are more options, solutions and perspectives to consider than the ones you are currently invested in.
l
Virgo The 8 of Cups paints a picture of weariness and you
may feel like you have nothing more to give to a particular person or a project. Yet you feel like you should hang in there and you may judge yourself for feeling drained or burnt out. Respect your limits and boundaries, give yourself some unconditional love and nurture your worn-out body, mind or soul.
Sagittarius The Prince of Wands is often called ‘Prince Charming’. He appeals to your sense of adventure and your love of new experiences. You may feel very enthusiastic and ready to follow your heart’s calling. Never mind if the goal-posts might be changing in a month’s time as long as your creative juices are flowing... Capricorn The Hermit and the mountain goat have much in common; they both need time and space alone to find their own answers within. This is the perfect time for a retreat; as you refresh your mind and recharge your batteries, the deep soul-searching enquiry into your ultimate goals can even be pleasurable. Aquarius The 8 of Swords represents a time of unease. You may feel restless or confused and you may spend too much time overanalysing things. You might feel pressured to make concrete decisions but before you make further plans, it is important to find peace of mind and listen to your heart. Take your time...
f
Pisces The Chariot represents the hero’s journey; once he knows what he wants and commits to a cause he is unstoppable. Change for the sake of change alone won’t be satisfying. Things work better for you if you take the time to deeply investigate your innermost essence, so that you can create new realities grounded in confidence and purpose.

Q&A
A Quick Chat With ...
CASSIE SWINNEY Pet Stylist
How many pets do you have? I have a Devon Rex cat named Princess Momo, a fat guinea pig named Prince Charming and the most recent edition is a puppy Doberman cross named Captain Archibald. How did you get into the dog grooming business? A few years ago I was looking for a new career path and stumbled upon a pet stying course on the Gold Coast. I have always been an animal lover and a creative person and thought it would be a good fit for me. What’s the secret to getting rid of that wet dog smell? If you regularly groom your dog this will help tremendously! Double coated dogs such as labradors, retrievers, huskys, border collies etc. need regular deshedding to get rid of the dead undercoat. Brushing and blowdrying out the dead undercoat will help the dog to stay cool in summer and allow their coat to dry a lot faster! You are also a musician and makeup artist, how do you balance a business but also keep up your hobbies? I have been unexpectedly busy since opening The Salty Dog so unfortunately I haven’t had much time to be very creative lately but I try to spend a few hours a week just playing around on the keyboard or creating makeup looks. I’d love to play live sometime soon! Best park, beach and pub for dogs? Poinciana’s restaurant in Mullumbimby allow dogs and the doggies enjoy the lovely out door area. The Mullumbimby showgrounds are a great place to walk your dog as well. If you could be any movie character, who would you be and why? Any character that can talk to animals so I could chat to the doggies while I groom them :) Who is your favourite musician? Tom Waits. If you’re not at work, where can we find you? Usually eating tasty morsels. What’s your favourite place to relax and wind down? I love to stay home, snuggle in bed and watch a movie. I’m a bit of a homebody.
You can find Cassie @cottonsocksxoxo or head to the @thesaltydoggrooming in Mullum.
