Around Town This Week

This Friday, enjoy getting your hands dirty by making your own Kokedama, a form of Bonsai at Workshops of Byron Bay. You will also learn how to take care of your hanging garden and create your own decorative macramé knots to hang it. Also on Friday through Sunday, Flickerfest, the iconic Bondi short film fest is now on tour, with the best shorts from Australia and around the globe to be screened at Mullum Civic Hall. Come along on Saturday from 4:30pm to support local filmmakers at Byron All Shorts, a showcase of the best shorts from the Byron region. This weekend in Mullum, Kiva Spa is hosting a ‘nourish night’ for ladies at 7pm on Sunday in support of the Art 2 Healing Project, which assists women in Asia who are affected by the sex trafficking industry. We hear there’ll be sound healing, chanting, yoga, meditation, and plenty of herbal tea going ‘round. Lastly, if you haven’t had a chance to test-drive the giant trapeze that has been set up in Byron’s Denning Park over the holidays, you’ve got until Valentines Day to give it a crack – classes are on offer for those keen to learn the basics, or you can opt for a single trapeze swing for $20. There’s also a free flying trapeze show every Friday and Saturday at 6:30pm; pack a picnic and bring the family. Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

Drive Safe, Frank Lucas It’s so easy to get distracted when driving around Byron. We have to remember children may be on the road. I saw a truck driver drive into The Pass a couple of Sundays ago in the morning going so very fast (I don’t want to mention who as it’s not an easy job this time of year) and I was talking to a guy about to go for a surf and he mentioned how a child could be on the road. I have seen drivers going fast after the Channon market and also feel concerned about the children. Well I’m not sure how far two cents goes these days and I suppose I go real fast but God let the young lives last!

Recognising The Nation, Legal Migrant It is that day again, Australia Day, Invasion Day, Triple J Hottest 100 Day. A day open to interpretation, a day for supermarkets to cash in on lamb sales, an excuse to drink more, a reason to see family and friends, a sad day for some - dependant on your view of history. Whatever it means to you - make the most of it. As a migrant in this wonderful country, I am grateful to be here, grateful to be accepted and welcomed with my funny accent, grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, grateful for a wonderful outdoor lifestyle. Australia, you're a beaut of a country and full of wonderful people - proud to be here mate. Thank you Australia.

Dear Keenwa,

I've barely seen my lover since he scored a new job as a barista. He's always going for after work drinks with his colleagues and when we walk around town, he seems to know everybody. Do you thing that I should be worried? - Decaf

Dear Decaf, Yes! Not because of your lover's potential infidelity my love, but the simple fact that you are DATING A BARISTA. He may be Jesus incarnate, but his adrenals despise him and I'm guessing his fingers are stained. Are you guys able to have an authentic conversation? Does he do everything around the house at a slower pace? I'm not saying it's impossible to find a genuine coffee maker, but I sense some hardcore father issues at your core and blockages in all seven of your chakras. Maybe you should consider a brief detox (caffeinefree) then reassess with a clear heart and mind.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - INTUITION TRUMPS INFORMATION

“The solutions to our problems are intuitive in nature, not intellectual. The power we posses through our connection to universal consciousness far exceeds our intellect, and we access it through the practice of meditation.” Dr. Habib Sadhegi Forget the information highway, we're headed to the intuition highway. When we are aligned with our intuition, the answers just come. We don't need to overanalyse and nail-bite and flip-flop and debate pros-andcons and hem-and-haw, because we JUST KNOW. As Clarissa Pinkola Estés puts it, "over-intellectualization can obscure the patterns of the instinctual nature of women." And so we must cultivate and encourage and be dutiful custodians our instinctual nature. Meditation, ritual and re-wilding are the keys to accessing more of our inner knowing, our instinctual Self. Carve out time to tune in. Start now. Start in some small, imperfect way. A meditation, a barefoot walk, a tarot spread. Invite intuition back into your life. Make a home for it. And then, show up again and again. Be there to receive the gifts of your wild, knowing, intuitive nature.

This week’s main theme is relationships, and the way our chosen style of communication influences them for better or worse. Thursday might be the perfect day to find real healing for some painful and recurring patterns in relationships. Lady Venus with all her love and longing is supersensitive to old pain (Venus/Chiron conjunction in Pisces), but at the same time a Moon/Mercury conjunction in Capricorn can facilitate honesty about how you feel, and help find some practical and wise solutions. Saturday’s New Moon in Aquarius has a friendly and humanitarian vibe, but Venus in a challenging square to Saturn, might insist on a dose of ‘tough love’. Mars enters Aries where he is at home for the next five weeks. He enthusiastically projects the absolute warrior archetype which could be translated quite often into a ‘my way or the highway’ attitude. A Mercury/ Pluto conjunction on Monday intensifies obsessive thoughts and deepens conversations, maybe revealing some well-kept secrets... For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The Magician drawn assists you in staying centred and absolutely focused on your chosen objective. With your ‘can do’ attitude you are convincing; people believe in you and follow your initiative. As long as you are very conscious about the way you communicate, you can create magical results and it might look as if miracles are happening.

h

Taurus The Emperor Tarot card is the archetype

of masculinity – confident, powerful and with great leadership skills that might come across in a bossy way at times, but are nevertheless benevolent. This might be a busy week for you, asserting yourself and your visions for the future. New structures in business can be implemented and may bring great results.

i

Gemini The World Tarot card implies that you have been

using your gifts for communication and organisation in such a way that things are now falling into place almost effortlessly. It might feel like the universe is lining things up for you in just the right way! This is a time of uttermost productive endings and innovative beginnings.

a

Libra The Prince of Swords holds the banner of independence and personal freedom. This week you might discover that some of your old and ingrained thought patterns actually hold you prisoner, and that the time is ripe to liberate yourself from your very own mental slavery.

b

Scorpio The Ace of Cups is the big gift of an enlightening moment or grace that brings more love and light into the very core of your being. Based on the universal law of ‘as inside, so outside’, from here on your perceptions and actions are infused by new attunement, intuition and emotional integrity.

c

Sagittarius This is the week to shine your light forth brilliantly. With the Sun Tarot card you have ample creative energy to inspire greatness in yourself and others. Partnerships, teamwork and collaborations are favoured, as long as there are fun and playfulness involved.

d

j

Capricorn The 6 of Swords represents a concentrated effort and focus; no matter what your objective is, you can innovate and overcome former difficulties. You might adopt a higher or holistic perspective and communicate your new ideas in such a way that people take notice, and you are sure to be heard.

k

Aquarius The 9 of Cups is often called the wish card; you just have to be clear about what you really want. Heart desires can come true and opportunities can open up for you as you make yourself available for all sorts of blessings. Your happiness and fulfilment ripples out into the hearts of others.

Cancer The 2 of Disks speaks of change as the only constant thing in life; but change can be really challenging for the crab who loves to stay in its usual and well known comfort-zone. This week you are asked to keep flexible, juggle the curved balls that existence throws you and go with the flow. With this attitude you might even have some fun!

Leo The art and craft of relationships is the theme of the Lovers card. It would like to inspire you to spend more time with your loved ones and make meaningful connections, rather than taking them for granted. Reconnect with passion and playfulness as a way to overcome seeming polarities; this might be a transformative experience.

l

Virgo The Knight of Wands is the bringer of change; he challenges old beliefs, enthusiastically conjures up new visions and creates exciting realities. Take a leap of faith because this week you can make things happen which you did not believe possible a while ago. Trust yourself, go for it and have some fun on the way!

e

f

Pisces The Wheel of Fortune indicates a turning point and a change for the better. This does not come about by pure luck. It is the transformation and expansion that happens after a lot of soulsearching and a mental/emotional breakthrough. It manifests as a new perspective on life and a new zest for living.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

JAMES MCMILLAN & MAX TISCHLER Co-Directors of Byron Bay Surf Festival

What age did you start surfing? Why? J: I started surfing at age 11. My Uncle had a photo he showed me of him standing at Angourie Point with a single fin in the late sixties. I wanted to hit the road and do just that. M: I remember wanting to paddle-in after my big brother when I was 8 or 9. Any tips for people thinking of taking up surfing at a later age? J: Do it now and expect your life to change for the better. Compliment surfing with yoga. Don't say dude at least until you get your first tube, or better still, don't say it ever. M: Find someone who’s happy to push you into a few. Forget the stigma…get a big, floaty board and enjoy yourself. Why bring the BBSF back again? J: So many surfers and artists I know do awesome stuff. A little surf festival in Byron is a good place to share it all with the community and each other. M: We missed it - and we believe the community did, too. Biggest inspiration? J: Creation...waking up early and seeing a new day unfold can bring a man to tears if you're in touch, (plus the surf's uncrowded at that time. ;) M: My wife Kazzie, throughout her life she’s had more than her fair share of close-out sets and she still keeps paddling. And my two beautiful boys - constantly reminding me to see the world through a child’s eyes. Do you have any hobbies, besides surfing, of course? J: Just generally hanging in my studio doing arty farty stuff and I also have a habit of collecting feathers and seeds that fall from trees. M: I enjoy walking across desert landscapes with a pack of camels. Favourite overseas surfing destination? J: Indo, New Zealand and the freezing waters of Southern Chile. M: The North Shore of Oahu- although mostly crowdedhas a sense of history and place revered by most surfers, its pretty special. Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival kicks off the 24th - 26th Feb, check byronbaysurffestival.com.au for events and details.
