If you’re not already smiling, it’s time to paint one on because we’re all heading for the ANZAC Day long weekend. The Dawn Memorial Service is at 5:30am with breaky at the Services Club from 6 to 6:30am. If you miss that then the main service is on in town at 11am at the Memorial Gates and there will be free soft drinks after at the Services Club. Also on in Byron this weekend is the 36th Annual Malibu Classic. Prize money is $500 in three categories and you can grab an entry form off Facebook. In Bangalow, Flicks in the Field is happening which is going to be an old school pop-up drive-in night, followed by a cult classic or two on Saturday. You’ll be able to grab snacks to munch on and if you don’t want to be in the car, there will be plenty of room for blankets on the grass too. The Byron Bay Brewery is going to be cranking every night with Kim Souza Band from Brazil dishing up some roots reggae on Friday night (free entry), electronic afternoon on Sunday and more reggae with the legendary Johnny Osbourne and Max Glazer on Monday ($10 after 8pm). __________________________________________ Living near the ocean always raises the question of water safety and what we can do as a community. With the holiday period almost over our dedicated surf life savers will be leaving our beaches as funding for the peak period ends. This gets me thinking about a great safety initiative I saw while on holiday in Kauai called the rescue tube foundation ( Google it). Basically the local Rotary funded to have bright yellow rescue float tube mounted on a pole at high risk and back beach locations. The idea is that we have a large number of our community that have water safety skills that could assist someone in distress if we had the luxury of a rescue float. Let’s be honest we don’t take a rescue device on our daily dog walk but it is inevitable we will come across a dangerous water situation. This initiative is NOT a replacement for our amazing surf life savers but a back up plan and highlights the fact we could do more to save lives.

__________________________________________ In response to Unhappy Camper in last weeks issue, “c’mon man - it’s Byron Bay”. What is wrong with the Backpacker Man in a Van Travelling Army (BMVTA) making this wasteland car park home. It is so attractive to us ‘happy Campers’ - first of all it’s free, there is a toilet nearby, we have a supermarket a stones throw away, numerous takeaways and bars on our doorstep, for a shower we just go in the surf. Come down one and all and experience ‘irony’ as we sit around our vans at night and sing Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi song, my favourite lyric is “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” To add to more irony upon irony the parking lot is paradise for us.

What’s the strangest request a customer has ever made? A client’s friend was going through a rough time and he asked me to make her the biggest pair of knickers I could. We used a floral queen size bed sheet, and a tonne of elastic. He didn’t share the story as to why this was funny. She was stoked and it cheered her up. What’s your favourite breakfast spot in Byron Bay? Looking at some of my customers’ work. The level of artistry and design ability locally inspires me to do my best to reproduce it as good as I can. And also think back to what I could be doing… What’s your favourite vacation spot? Beach Cafe. What fashion trend do you love or hate? I love simple and plain colours. If I were designing, it would be whites, creams, hand embellishments, and natural fibers. I don’t believe in a trend as much as a style. Whether we believe it or not we all have our own unique style that works for us. It’s just a matter of finding it. Why did you start the business? I was super poor, and a single mum to my delightful son Sam. And needed a part-time income. An opportunity presented itself with cheap shop rent and no ongoing commitment. I set up my sewing machine on a glass table, and started to sew. And here we are 6 years later. My single best piece of advice for anyone in business is Never compromise your level of service even when your relationships have developed into friendships. Business is business, and people are paying you for a service. The most influential person in my career has been… My grandfather Ron. He has supported me through every single bit. Building change rooms, counter tops. And teaching me all the things I need to know to make my business what it is today.
