Around Town This Week
Slow Down. Chill out. And let the good times roll. The Party Shirt People Party is on this Friday night on the epic Byron Surf Club deck from 4pm. You can catch Kyle Lionhart, Squeak Lemaire and other fabulous acts. If you’re keen to skip the dishes on Christmas Day, a few of our fancier establishments are offering Christmas lunch. Check out if there are still spaces available at the Italian at the Pacific and at Elements of Byron Bay. Then on Boxing Day, most bars and restaurants are open. Lisa Hunt will be bringing her diva soul to the Beach Hotel at 4:30pm which will be amazing. If you’re not going to the Falls Festival for New Years, never fear - there are heaps of other great things to do. You might want to head to the Bohemia Gypsy Ball at the Arts Yard in Bangalow on New Years Eve (check it out on Eventbrite). Or you may want to start the year on a really positive, healthy note with a sunrise meditation at the lighthouse at 5:30am. We’ve got the full lowdown of everything that’s happening over the Christmas/New Years period in this week’s double edition gig guide. Wishing you a beautiful, fun, safe and relaxing break! Dear Keenwa,
My mum has fallen on hard times and has had to move in with me. The thing is, she struts around the joint like she owns it and bosses me around to no end. I’m a grown ass woman and I pay the bills, so do I still have to listen to her? - My House, My Rules

Considering she is the owner of your ugliest potential profile photos, you might wanna take Mr T’s advice and treat your mama right. That is of course, unless she’s making you switch your phone off at dinner and drink full cream coconut milk. In that case, I suggest you try your luck at sleeping rough on the streets, but please don’t fret, you won’t be on your own, Byron has the second highest homeless rate in NSW outside of Sydney. Many of your new ‘roomies’ will be women and children escaping domestic violence, who for some reason couldn’t afford the exorbitant rental prices, some are crew who lost their barista job to a guy without a visa. Sure there may be moments of your new lifestyle that are a bit touch and go, but imagine how brown you’ll get sleeping outdoors, and I do hear the donated meals are 85% gluten free.
Dear Keenwa,
It’s almost New Years and every year it’s the same old story beers and babes, and it’s always overrated. This year I want to do something new. What’s the best way to bring in NYE in Byron? - Over NYE
Dear Over NYE,
Ooh I hear ya’, when hedonism starts to get a little boring, why not try something a little more traditional? The ancients sure as hell didn’t have Falls Festival or Woodford, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t know how to party. Why not sacrifice some groms like the Aztecs, who believed drowning children would secure rainwater for their crops. Or get really wild like the Spaniards, who ate 12 grapes each at the stroke of midnight. In Christendom, under which the Gregorian Calendar developed, New Year’s Day traditionally marks the feast of the circumcision of Christ. To make this one Byron Lord style simply perform the ceremony beachside, with lots of beers and babes.

H E A V I L Y M E D I TAT E D with
THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - “YOU CAN’T SPLIT THE INFINITE. YOU CAN’T DIVIDE THE DIVINE.” - Rob Bell “When you think about your life - when you think about joy, meaning, significance, let’s even use the word happiness, are those only present in your world in limited amounts? And if we’re talking about your joy, when you experience joy you are experiencing that which has no boundaries or edges. It can’t be divided into smaller slices or component parts. You can’t split the infinite. You can’t divide the divine.” Rob Bell. The same is true of money, time, opportunity and even compassion. A truly abundant mindset means seeing the world with an eye full of light. It means trusting that there is (more than) enough for everyone because this universe is wildly abundant. It means sharing, pooling, supporting. It means giving help, giving credit, and giving up the fear that there’s not enough to go around. The more you give, the more there is to give. It’s a law of the universe. Conversely, when you tighten your grip and cower in a corner counting your pennies, your instagram followers, your good deeds and gifts given, when you restrict the flow of abundance to others, you are restricting the flow of abundance to yourself as well. You get to choose who you will be in this world, what you will give and what you will receive. It’s either scarcity or abundance. Turn the tap down to a trickle, or open yourself and those around you to the flow of abundance.

With the Moon conjunct Jupiter in Libra and opposite Uranus in Aries, the overall mood is generous, and you might just find the beautiful and unconventional gift you were looking for. On Christmas Day a Saturn/Uranus trine, which has been building up for weeks, is exact and inspires you to gracefully accept your reality and take responsibility for it. Be prepared for delays or disruptions when travelling on Monday (Boxing Day) and Tuesday; the combination of Mercury retrograde and a Jupiter/Uranus opposition spells trouble for travel. Monday is much better spent at home with your loved ones; Venus the Goddess of Love has beautiful aspects to Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn on that day. With four planets in goal-oriented Capricorn, the New Moon on Thursday (29th) is the perfect day to set intentions concerning your career or business for the next year. A Mars/Neptune conjunction in Pisces on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day inspires a soft, inclusive and compassionate mood. Sensitivity and creativity are enhanced, and so are the effects of the intake of alcohol or mind-altering substances! The Piscean theme gets even more pronounced when the Moon on Monday (2nd) and Venus on Tuesday (3rd) slip into Pisces. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
Aries The Knight of Disks represents traditional, conservative values and the inner knowing that good things take time. During this Festive Season it would be worthwhile for you to take a break from your normal busy ways and reminiscent on how far you have come already. Give yourself some credit for what has been achieved so far.
h
a
Libra The 2 of Swords symbolises a very basic need for Libra; the need for peace and harmony. There is a great possibility or opportunity to make peace with family and friends during this Festive Season. However, the prerequisites are making up your mind, making peace within yourself first and letting go of old grievances.
b
Taurus The Strength Tarot card implies that you have ample energy and renewed passion. You might feel like exploring the world, your creativity or your lover during the holidays. You might recapture a sense of wonder for your life, which might persuade you to unusual, but worthwhile risk-taking.
Scorpio The Queen of Swords is honest, astute and upfront, and calls things as they are. This indicates that you are not in the mood for pretense or being nice! You want to get to the bottom of things and you don’t mind a confrontation if it brings more clarity.
i
Gemini Oddly enough you might find that you don’t feel very
Sagittarius The Ace of Swords is the big gift of mental clarity, which can bring resolution and direction to almost any situation that has been stuck for a while. The path is clear and any perceived obstacles are now removed. Creative thinking is enhanced and you might have an ‘aha’ experience or two.
j
Cancer Dreams might come true and your heart’s desires
socially inclined during the next two weeks. The Hermit card drawn focuses your attention inward, rather than outward. Therefore while everyone else is out there partying, you retreat into your private world. Maybe there is some important business you have to complete and you don’t want to be distracted.
might be fulfilled during the Christmas holidays. The World Tarot card implies that you are ready to explore new possibilities. You are willing to expand your consciousness through travel, meeting new people, or by starting something new that you have been contemplating for a long time.
k
Leo The Star card is right up Leo’s alley! Recognition that
warms your heart and boosts your confidence might come from family and friends as you gather together during the holidays. You no longer feel the need to inflate or deflate yourself and others, and your natural charisma and magnetism pull people towards you.
l
Virgo The Prince of Cups symbolises the lover within; he
emphasises that love and self-love are really just the two sides of one coin. No matter how kind, caring and service-oriented you are towards others, it will backfire in the form of resentment, frustration and disappointment if you don’t take care of your own needs and longings first.
c
d
Capricorn The 7 of Swords speaks of wanting to escape a situation that is very uncomfortable or frustrating. Doubt and indecisiveness might be the reasons why you have not been moving forward yet. Negative self-talk sabotages your willpower even further. Adopt the attitude of gratitude for the good things in your life and take it from there...
e
Aquarius During this holiday season you might be playing an important role in nurturing and caring for people who are having a difficult time. Your humanitarian spirit, combined with the Queen of Disks, provides practical and emotional assistance and creates a homely and welcoming atmosphere.
f
Pisces The Knight of Cups is often called the ‘Knight in Shining Armour’. Combine this with the very Piscean flavour from New Year’s Day onwards, and you might have to watch your boundaries. Make sure you don’t sacrifice your own needs while looking after others. Nevertheless this can be a very romantic and highly creative time.

The main players in 2017 are Jupiter (expansion, optimism, convictions) and Saturn (discipline, structure, limitation). The whole year revolves around their relationships to: Chiron, the archetype of the wounded healer; Uranus, the planet likened to a lightning bolt or radical awakening; Neptune who inspires high ideals, illusions and any form of art; and, Pluto, the powerful transformer of life, death and rebirth. Jupiter resides in Libra, the sign for harmony and cooperation, until early October. During this time we might find great inspiration about how to live more peacefully and gracefully. In the best of worlds we would find a way to bring more benevolent influences into every aspect of our world. ‘Make peace, not war’ is a perfect expression of Jupiter in Libra, or just being kind and ‘nice’ because it feels good.

Late in March (exact 31/3/17) and early in August (exact 5/8/17) Jupiter and Pluto form a stressful square. Pluto in Capricorn spells power and ambition, as well as the need to transform the established hierarchy and order. When Pluto and Jupiter are in tense aspect the fight about who is right and who is wrong can get very obsessive and fanatic, and can result in casualties in the name of ‘truth’ or ‘justice’. On the 11th of October Jupiter moves into Scorpio and stays there for about one year. This time lends itself to thorough research of anything you are deeply interested or intrigued about, especially occult or previously taboo subjects. It also works well for taking carefully calculated risks. On the downside expect forceful, aggressive or vindictive behaviour. Power issues pop up everywhere and your willpower or staying-power might be challenged and investigated. Jupiter also forms an opposition to Uranus in Aries (exact 3/3/17 and 28/9/17). The theme here is freedom from unfair limitations. The way to achieve it includes a surprise factor, innovation or revolution. Depending on how flexible a person, a society or a culture is, this aspect has the potential to bring great relief or unrest. The danger is that the baby might be thrown out with the bathwater. Alliances and partnerships might be tested to the max if they are perceived as constrictive. In December (exact 3/12/17) Jupiter forms a ‘very deep’ water trine to Neptune in Pisces. This aspect stimulates creativity, idealism and spirituality. Neptune is not inclined to fulfil ego drives; you may notice that you slack off or daydream a lot. You just want to do what you love and feel passionate about, nothing else! Saturn traverses Sagittarius for most of the year. He is commonly experienced as control, strategy, and the separation of ‘us and them’. In Sagittarius the divide happens along the lines of religion, philosophy, society and culture. It can be beneficial for weeding out hypocritical behaviour, or for improving impractical and outdated strategies and laws. You are using this transit well if you are becoming more tolerant, or if you solidify your knowledge about topics that are most important to you. Ultimately it is about seeking, finding and living your inner truth in freedom and with responsibility. On the 20th of December Saturn moves into ‘down-to-earth’ Capricorn where he resides very comfortably for years to come. There might be an aura of austerity and seriousness around but surely a lot of hard work will be done in very efficient ways! Saturn has to arrange himself amicably with Uranus during their fire trine (exact 19/5/17 and 11/11/17). This highlights possibilities and opportunities that appear when we find a new balance between the old and the new. It requires our willingness to reform certain aspects of our lives and our society, in order to create a more humanitarian structure on our planet. The fiery expression of this aspect adds passion, dedication and a pioneering spirit to any chosen path. A challenging Saturn/Chiron square happens in a similar time frame (exact 1/5/17 and 3/11/17). Your inner judge may prod you with painful lessons about self-imposed limits. Nevertheless there is a possibility for addressing and overcoming old habits and fears. The overall sensitivity to those in our society who are suffering from loneliness, depression or isolation increases and a powerful fighting spirit for humanitarian causes can arise. In August and September Jupiter forms a cooperative sextile with Saturn (exact 28/8/17). This is a very beneficial time for solving or advancing any difficult situation. We can find inspiration to approach expansion and growth from a careful and pragmatic point of view. Duties and obligations are not seen as limitations but as a necessity on the road to inner wisdom, maturity and success. Please also note that Mercury (communication, travel) has four retrograde periods in 2017, including the one we are in right now, which finishes on 9/1/17. The other three times are from mid April to early May, mid August to early September, and from early December until Christmas. During these periods it helps to factor in extra time for delays, lost messages and misunderstandings. Difficulties with electric and electronic equipment are also very common. Venus, the goddess of love and beauty retrogrades from early March to the middle of April in Aries and Pisces. This six week period might bring issues concerning self-love, self-sacrifice and compassion. Personal boundaries might have to be revised and re-drawn. Wishing you a happy and fulfilling 2017! With love, Gisela.

Q&A
A Quick Chat With ...
DUANE BRYAN
Co-Founder of The Brokenhead Company What is all the fuss about Coconut Milk? Why is it so good? Our coconut milk is delightfully delicious, it’s a
good creamy alternative to dairy and ticks the sustainability boxes. Being made from coconuts it contains lots of beneficial nutrients and did I say it tastes great!!
You have one day in Byron, what is on your must do list? Tea Tree Lake, Brokenhead Beach, breakfast,
lunch and dinner at Naked Treaties, Roadhouse and The Treehouse! And something touristy like Crystal Castle or a waterfall!
Favourite holiday destination? I am in my favourite holiday destination!! Cheesy I know but its still true!
Who has been your biggest inspiration? My business partner Sophie Eadie. We were really keen to build something and contribute and we have been working towards that idea for nearly 2 years now. Your favourite thing to cook with coconut milk?
I don’t really cook with it but I do make daily smoothies! My favourite is simply 1-2 frozen bananas, coconut milk 350mls (ice or water may be added) and peanut butter at least twice a day.
What’s your vice? Socialising at the local (The Treehouse) with the team!
One of your company values is producing sustainable and recyclable products. Any tips on what we can do at home to do the same? Being
sustainable at home for me is about being prepared, if you are prepared to recycle by simply having a box next to the bin for glass and recycling, you are more likely to do it.
What does your morning routine involve? It is up at 6.30am glass of water with lemon, then either the gym or boot camp (Mondays and Thursdays 8am Belongil!) followed by some quiet time to plan the day, a breakfast smoothie. Then hit targets! Dogs or cats? Dolphins! Find out more about Duane and The Brokenhead Company thebrokenhead.com or @the.brokenhead
