Around Town This Week
Calling all sliders: the Byron Bay Surf Festival is finally here! The fun begins at 7am on Friday morning with a Main Beach surf session hosted by OneWave, the non-profit surf community tackling mental health issues, followed by a beach clean-up and a plastic-free barbecue. Stick around for the Australian premiere of surf documentary Given at the free sunset cinema from 7pm. Saturday’s festival program is packed with yoga, markets, workshops, product demos, surf yarns in the ‘surf literature lounge’ and more, capped off by the Saturday Slide party at the Beach Hotel headlined by US pop-folk artist G.Love (doors open 8pm). On Sunday, the action moves to Wategos for a whole day of non-competitive surfing events and good tunes, with the Byron Bay Mal Club bringing their barbecue game. Don’t forget to register for the festival party wave (2pm) before noon! The volunteer crew from Byron’s Shark Watch will be keeping a careful eye on this Sunday session during their first official patrol; look out for their market stand on Saturday if you’re interested in supporting this great community initiative. If the mere mention of sharks makes you want to run for the hills, head for Eltham Hall, where you can catch a screening of award-winning Spanish drama Truman from 7:30pm on Saturday. Aim for 6pm if you fancy a home-cooked meal ($12, vegetarian options available) before the film. Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

Dear Keenwa, I've been seeing a guy for two days and I'm unsure if he's my soul mate or twin flame? How can I tell? He's a Gemini. - Time's Ticking Dear Time's Ticking, Ah, that one's easy. There's always a bit of a chaser runner vibe in the twin flame mix. You know he's the one if he bolted from the dinner table at the restaurant without saying goodbye. Don't fret, the twins always find a way back to one another, he'll come running back, most likely when he's hungry again. Perhaps send off a quick 'I love you' text message to see if he's okay though, but if he replies with an emoji, you know it's not your twin flame. If you never hear from him again, you know he was probably just a soulmate. As a wise person once said, love is like a fart, if you have to force it, it's probably a crap. Dear Keenwa, My 92 year old grandmother has type 2 diabetes. I found non-organic dried bananas hidden under her crochet blanket, and confiscated them. Did I do the right thing? - Grannie's Sweetie Dear Grannie's Sweetie, It may never be too late to quit sugar, but what about smiling? Elder abuse occurs in roughly 10% of Aussie households and nursing homes in a society consumed by longevity, and for what? The race to be the last at the finish line is aging us, making us miss out on the damn present moment. Are you trying to keep your grannie alive for her or for you? Does her face show a woman that has lived, loved, and laughed well this life? I'd like to break it to you gently babe, she's going to pass away from something, so she might as well have a banana in her hand. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - WHO YOU ARE IS AN EVOLUTION "The important thing is this: to be able, at any moment, to sacrifice what we are for what we could become." -Charles Du Bos You are not bound by contract, fate, inheritance or destiny to live as a fixed version of yourself. You are free. Free to change. Free to shed a skin. Free to walk through a new doorway. Free to evolve. You are pure potential. You are limitless. All you need is willingness. In every moment that you are willing to step outside of who you think you're supposed to be, you step into your true becoming. You step closer to your true self and you activate your full potential. Notice any moulds, any roles, any expectations, any obligations, any old stories, any beliefs that lock you into in a fixed state of being. That is not you. That is an expired, outdated idea of you. Who you are is an evolution. Be willing to give up who you "are" (who you think you need to be/what someone told you to be/ who you used to be) so that you can expand into the limitless potential of your true nature. Join the evolution revolution. Be willing to be-come YOU. Over and over again.

The disturbing fallout of a Mars/Pluto square (exact on the 22th) might still linger until Monday and manifest in the form of power struggles or recurring arguments. Nevertheless on Friday it may be possible to gain a much clearer perspective and some problems can be resolved. On Monday the New Moon in Pisces occurs in close proximity to Neptune which adds a rather dreamy, highly emotional but also creative quality to this solar eclipse (not visible for us). We might be rudely awakened from our daydreams very soon though, courtesy of a Mars/Uranus conjunction in Aries which is amplified by an opposition to Jupiter; all this happens on the same day! It might manifest as a wake-up call or even an accident if you are not careful. Be prepared for weird, unusual things to happen; stay aware and try to not overreact. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
a
Aries The Chariot symbolises determination and commitment for a new quest and the power to reach your goal. Before you charge forward though, it is important to find stillness and concentration deep within your 3rd chakra which is the seat of your power centre.
Libra The 4 of Wands represents a time of accomplishment and the enjoyment of well-deserved rewards. This may happen on a professional level or in any of your important relationships. Being recognised by others gives you a great boost of energy and the assurance that you are on the right path.
h
b
i
c
Taurus The Priestess suggests that in times of outer tumult it might be advisable to withdraw from involvement, find a quiet place and focus on looking beyond the obvious and into your inner realms. From there you can trust your own perception, find guidance, connect with your resourcefulness and create solutions.
Gemini The 9 of Disks represents benefit and gain in all areas of your life, be it in the material world, on the emotional level, or in the form of spiritual insight. Therefore you are well prepared for any unforeseen circumstances and might be able to use them to your advantage, or even turn them into a gift.
j
Cancer The Star Tarot card symbolises a state of radiance, confidence and charisma that pulls opportunities towards you. You might be enjoying great inner harmony even though there may be chaos around you and you offer your relaxed attitude to anyone who comes in contact with you. There is great creative potential too!
k
Leo With the 10 of Wands drawn you might be struggling uphill this week; the biggest challenge is to let go of oppressive, obsessive or limiting judgments against yourself. If you feel you have been shouldering extra burdens, the question is not how can you keep it up, but how to find relief and time for recuperation?
l
Virgo The 4 of Cups indicates that even though life seems to hum along in an o.k. fashion you are missing real fulfilment; you might feel low in energy and nothing really excites you. If you allow yourself to go beyond the trappings of your mind into the realm of feelings, you might find stale dissatisfaction which can in turn get you motivated to make important decisions and changes.
Scorpio The Ace of Wands describes the undiluted creative force that is ready to erupt and manifest itself. In the moment when it happens it is impossible to hold back and there is no consideration about the impact, which may be positive or destructive. Therefore you need to be aware of how fired up you are and how strongly you come across. Sagittarius The Prince of Wands and the Archer have much in common; they love an adventure, a new experience or anything different to the status quo. This week your need for stimulation might take you far into new and uncharted territory. No matter what you discover you certainly rise to any challenge and most likely it is very enjoyable.
d
Capricorn The Aeon or Judgment card depicts an awakening to new possibilities concerning your life mission or vocation. You might feel at the brink of a rebirth and it looks like the universe is lining up opportunities for you. In your down-to-earth way you are acutely perceptive; trust it!
e
Aquarius The Knight of Swords might be an ‘air-head’ but often times his ability to respond to unexpected situations in a constructive way leads to success. With a lot of uncertainty in the air this week, you are surely playing your cards right and finding the straight path from confusion to clarity and action.
f
Pisces The New Moon time in your sign might be especially potent for you; combined with the Magician card, amazing results can be created, almost out of thin air! So use your resources and tools, apply yourself skilfully and make reality out of what used to be sheer possibility.

Q&A
A Quick Chat With ...
GLEN CASEY
Owner, Patagonia Byron Bay @glen_casey What drew you to move Byron from growing up in Torquay? The Patagonia shop opportunity came up and l knew in my heart the time felt right to take a turn north. On the surface it was for the great beaches, warm water and waves but on a deeper level it was for a quieter life, more beach time with my daughter and my dream to buy a farm, grow things, and live the man on the land life. Patagonia uses recycled, ethically sourced and organic products. Why is this so important to you? After spending a lot of my life in a tiny house in the woods of Victoria, l developed a deeper connection for the forests and everything in it. l witnessed so much destruction in the name of wood pulp that I decided l’d do something about it, protect it, fight for it, and support products and companies that focused their efforts on making less environmentally harmful goods. Any pointers on how we can follow this ethos at home? l’d start with the small environmental things first. Change your shampoo to organic, toilet paper to recycled, or just change your dishwashing liquid. Anything that reduces your impact on the planet that isn’t chemically based and getting flushed down your pipes into the land or out into our oceans. How many times a week do you actually surf? With all these N/easters, I’ve hardly got into the surf much lately but if we get a good run of waves I’ll surf 3 or 4 days in a row before I run out of fuel and need a day out. If you're not surfing we can catch you at….? The mower shop dreaming of a bigger and better zero turn ride on. No one told me how fast the grass grows up here! Then after that, l normally hit Harvest Café around the corner from my farm for a fine coffee. What does a local’s day out in Byron look like? Leave the beach for one weekend out of a month and explore the beauty of the hinterland, walk a trail, dive in a creek, get massaged by a waterfall, hug a tree, climb a hill, stare at a view and sit and have a picnic with friends. What’s the one surfing tip you can give a beginner? A quote given to me by an old Hawaiian guy ‘I didn’t keep surfing, surfing kept me.’ What kind of music do you like? l love most music but lately l have gone back to my old 60’s and 70’s favourites; Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Rodrigus, Talking Heads and Supertramp.
You can catch Glen Casey at the Byron Bay Surf Festival on the 23rd-25th of Feb, or you can find him at the Patagonia store on Jonson St.
