Around Town This Week

Always dreamed of writing a hit screenplay? This week you can pick up some tips from experts including Logie Award-winning producer Imogen Banks (Offspring, Puberty Blues, Paper Giants), just one of the esteemed guest speakers at Screenworks’ Screen Producing Best Practice, a two-day seminar being held at SAE in Byron on Friday and Saturday. Best-selling science author Dr Gillian Ross will also be in town on Friday. Pop down to Byron Bay Library from 10:30-11:30am to hear Dr Ross discuss her new book Consciousness v Catastrophe: Reflections on the Next Stage of Human Evolution, which examines the major crisis threatening humanity; namely pollution, reduced biodiversity, over-population and deforestation. On Saturday night, you can do your bit for Mother Earth by switching off your lights during Earth Hour from 8:30-9:30pm. The Aussie grass roots movement will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year, having grown to become the world’s biggest movement for climate change since kicking off in Sydney back in 2007.

TEA TREE MULCH FROM THE FARM

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

WE'RE OVER THAT PLEBISCITE!, Jane Anderson Politicians are saying they still want a plebiscite on marriage equality. For example, they are saying the lobby organisation GetUp are bullying people to make them want marriage equality. Do they understand what groups like GetUp actually are? It's the membership! And if people are disagreeing with some politicians, it doesn't mean they're being bullied. They're actually thinking for themselves. Most Australians don't want a plebiscite. Let parliament decide. And pollies should cut their losses on wasting money holding a plebiscite. We've all moved on from a plebiscite. So should they!

DEAR JUDGING EYES, Anonymous Response to “Judging Eyes“ (Issue 126 9th Mar) Spot on! But it doesn't end there. It's just the beginning! I'm not a 'young mum’. When my eldest was in his mid 20’s, he took me out for dinner, we sat opposite each other and I felt like I was being watched. Then I noticed the eyes of a woman much older than myself judging eyes (you know what I mean) piercing through me like a torpedo, ready to drop doom. Those judging eyes were trying to tell me something. I couldn't understand what exactly...till it eventually hit me much later! My son was speaking about something that had left him out of sorts. I touched his hand and as I looked up at his face (which up until this point had always told the world I was his mum) then that woman's eyes became bowling balls ready to take me out for the count! It suddenly dawned on me why she was staring. I smiled to myself and loudly made a comment to him "SON..." Her jaw dropped. She got the message. She was the one who was being inappropriate, not me! Even our elders can get it SO wrong. Congrats DEAR JUDGING EYES, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “DEAR JUDGING EYES”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

Dear Keenwa, I've just moved here from Florida and don't seem to be able to find my favourite restaurant from back home anywhere. It serves great burgers and goes by the name of McDonalds. Any tips on getting my fix? - Homesick Dear Homesick, Oh, you can pound the pavement as much as you like my Floridanian friend, but Maccas you will not find in this town. The good news is, there are plenty of other options without gluten, sugar, GMO ingredients, litter, low wages and globalisation. Some burgers are even made with chaga mushrooms. We may protest against large food chains but we do let the retail giants in as they are the only ones who can pay the high rent. How else would the landlords from faraway cities get on top of their mortgages? Have a nice day. Dear Keenwa, I've been dating a girl for five weeks. As far as I can tell she isn't poly. How do I know when we're going steady? - Rocksteady Dear Rocksteady, Sure, you can look at her astrology chart, and your composite transits for the next ten years, keep your eyes on her Facebook status or wait around for her to post a pic of you both on Insta and tag you, but why do we need labels man? Relationships are a good time to borrow a page from our Buddhist friends on non-attachment. Why worry about what you can't control hey? We can only take responsibility for ourselves, so you might want to turn the question back to you. The thing is since we are all one, and as human beings share an interconnectedness, if you commit to honouring and loving yourself, you'll most likely trick her into committing to you. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - LAY DOWN THE DOING

Sometimes, when there's so much to do, when things aren't going to plan, when you're pushing for an outcome, when overwhelm is on the rise, and the pressure is peaking...the only thing you can do is to stage a revolt and LAY DOWN THE DOING. Yeah, you read that right. There are times when there's so much to do that the only thing TO DO is to just STOP. Take a breath. Take a walk. Take a break. Lay down. Fold your cards. Collapse. Cry. Say I'm done. Say enough. Say f^%# this. Break down. Break the cycle. Break through. Surrender. Sink back into yourself. Reevaluate. Recalibrate. THEN RISE UP. Fresh vibes. Tuned in. Strong. Clear. Focused. In rhythm. In flow. In total integrity. Start now by stopping. Give yourself permission to lay down the doing and you give yourself the opportunity to rise up.

With Sun, Mercury, Venus retrograde and Uranus in fiery and impulsive Aries, we might be in for surprises and arguments this week. This is one of the most stressful weeks of this year, so tread lightly and remember not to take things personally. On Friday a Moon/Mars square combined with a Mercury/Pluto square spells enormous inner tension and rash or stubborn behaviour. Clear communication can be compromised and it is difficult to assess the real depth and damage of emotionally heated outbursts right away. On Tuesday the New Moon in Aries is super-charged by a Mercury/Uranus conjunction. Any amazing, outrageous or liberating ideas that come up now need to be taken with a grain of salt. Try to slow down in conversations, in your mind and on the road to avoid collisions. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

a

h

b

Aries Red, hot passion is certainly yours this week! The Princess of Wands rides on a wave of excitement and courage from one adventure to the next. You are a free spirit indeed that won’t accept limitations or conditions apart from your own. If you are not driven by recklessness this week, you can be a truly inspiring and optimistic person to be with. Taurus One way to stay grounded this week is to connect with your senses and enjoy the abundance of nature’s bounty, a lush and comfortable environment, good food and drink... The 3 of Cups symbolises a time when it feels best to hang out with like-minded people, friends and family, to celebrate anything and everything.

i

Gemini The World Tarot card indicates a new chapter

in your life. Travel might be part of it but maybe you are just expanding the horizons of your own consciousness. There might be endings and new beginnings involved; the overall outlook is liberating and optimistic. This can be a very productive and creative week; any innovations will have to stand the test of time though.

j

Cancer The Ace of Swords cuts through confusion and doubt and brings you the great gift of clarity. From this place it is easy to be absolutely honest, straightforward and yet compassionate. Equipped with courage, insight and foresight you can resolve any difficult situation that might come up this week.

k

Leo The Queen of Disks represents mature and wise

l

Virgo More than anything you might crave peace of

woman energy; she is nurturing, caring and committed to longterm goals. She knows about the intricate connection between body, mind and soul and she loves a down-to-earth approach to any matter. The way to master this week’s turbulence is not by flying high but by grounding yourself with a healthy routine and nutritious, natural food.

mind this week! The 2 of Swords symbolises duality and the polarised world we live in. You are invited to find real solutions to ongoing problems by embracing synthesis right now, therefore look at what the two polarities have in common and find a remedy therein.

Libra The Priestess’ way to deal with stressful times is to retreat to a beautiful and peaceful place and to call in the light. Maybe she is able to inspire you to do the same. Withdrawing from involvement and finding your own inner guidance assists you to look beyond the obvious; if arguments have been involved this can be especially beneficial. Scorpio Keeping relationships balanced can be very tricky this week and the 2 of Wands warns you of wilful behaviour that could lock you in a cycle of frustration and aggression. The challenge is to stay centred in your own empowerment while avoiding overpowering others. You can call the shots, but only your own!

c

Sagittarius Magic is in the air for you this week and your creative power is high-lighted! The Magician is a master and has brought his skills of right timing, right action and focus to perfection; this way he creates miraculous results. You might be able to make reality out of what other people only dream about...

d

Capricorn The Hanged Man Tarot card represents a crisis of meaning and purpose. You might be questioning everything right now but over-analysing your situation keeps you stuck in it. This is the week to let go and surrender the voice of your ego and start to listen to your intuition. There are more options, solutions and perspectives to consider than those you are currently invested in.

e

Aquarius The 3 of Disks emphasises structure and practicality. To navigate the difficulties of this week with ease, it pays to have a plan of action and a daily ‘to do’ list, even though ‘normally’ you don’t do that! You can get great results if you focus on what is most important for you and you might learn a lesson in conscious manifestation 101.

f

Pisces The 4 of Disks describes a dilemma that the Fishes know all too well; in emotionally charged times it is especially important to know your limits and maintain clear boundaries. Yet as you reinforce these you may feel guilty and plagued by doubt. You may worry if your bond to others is strong enough to withstand turbulence; rest assured a strong friendship will deepen from challenges!

I Quit Plastics / Solutions Providing Mermaid Plastic Free Mermaid is an initiative to stop consumption of plastic bags. Why is this so important? It's a platform for me to authentically share what I know and am learning on the subject, with the goal of reducing pollution caused by consumption of all disposable plastics. Plastic takes at least 500 years to biodegrade, so it is irresponsible for us to use it for single-use items such as bags, straws, coffee cups, etc. The recycling of plastics is just not cost effective enough to justify the extreme waste that threatens wildlife and is literally trashing our Earth--ironically the beaches of paradise copping much of the filth. Plastic bags are the gateway plastic! We hope that after banning plastic bags it will create a tipping point and other single-use plastics will be phased out. This is our approach for our local campaign, Plastic Free Byron. What is Plastic Free Byron? We are currently recruiting volunteers to help us go street by street, block by block to audit all businesses in town of their disposable plastics. We will offer them sustainable alternatives at great prices including paper bags, paper straws, and other biodegradable solutions from Green Pack. We are working with Council and the Lismore MRF to ensure we set everyone up for success. What’s your favourite sea creature? The cuttlefish has fascinated me for years. Their ability to camouflage is truly spectacular as they can manipulate the pigment and texture of their skin! You’re currently working with the Spirit Festival. What can we expect to see during the festival? We have an inspiring line-up of teachers and healers coming from all over the world contributing to an event that is so classically Byron Bay. Workshops including different yoga traditions, ecstatic dance, tantra, incredible musicians sharing their gifts, panels discussing our theme "Custodians of Culture," Ayurveda and food as medicine, and more. Is it only for people into yoga and dancing? Not at all, it's for those curious to explore a variety of yoga modalities, those who wish to connect back to their body, release them from the clutches of their monkey mind, develop a spiritual practice, learn about healing foods and herbs, and yes, of course, dance until they are filled with joy. What’s the one thing we must not miss? I'm teaching a body melting Yang to Yin class to the sweet psychadelic sounds of Benny Treager's electric guitar and dreamy vocals at 3 pm on Saturday. The schedule is online, it's worth having a peak. I'm excited to learn more about Tantra!
