Thursday • 24 November • 2016

This Saturday there seems to be a gazillion great community events happening around the shire. At The Byron Bay Brewery, it’s all about raising money for Movember. $1 from every beer sold will be donated to the foundation and there will be entertainment and festivities including a strongman competition, a caricature auction and prizes for the best mustache. Sounds fun! It all kicks off at 5pm and should be a great night. Over at the Billinudgel Hotel, ‘Pop Crimes’ is happening from 2pm until 11pm. It’s free entry and you can catch the Sacred Shines, Black Sun and others who are taking the stage. You can even jump on the courtesy bus...so there’s no excuse for not dancing. During the day, the Periwinkle Christmas Fair is on Saturday (9:30am until 2pm). There will be stacks of wholesome kids activities, stalls, craft and entertainment. The Mothers Centre is also having a festival on Saturday at St Johns School Hall in Mullumbimby. There will be heaps of incredible classes and speakers. Our picks would be the Women as Mothers speech with Dr Joan Garvan PhD at 12:30 and the Mums & Bubs Yoga class with Emma Grant at 4pm. Photography Credit: Carly Brown

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

Why do vegans think that they are so superior? Don’t they know that the exotic superfoods they live off rack up a massive carbon footprint to get to them from far away lands? Transporting food is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Just saying. - Meat Lover

Dear Meat Lover,

If it wasn’t for those vegan freaks I’d be on the back streets of the Andes somewhere, still fetching corn prices. Instead I am a highly taxable, rich man’s staple, a time-consuming delicacy (what? Don’t tell me you don’t soak me overnight first?) Yeah they’re kinda intense and have to tell you every five minutes, but it doesn’t take long for them to fade, their iron deficiency and low blood sugar levels kick in, leaving you to cook your BBQ ribs on your solar panelled barbecue in peace.

For Sale 2006 Nissan X trail Blue 4wd. 135 kms. CTP until Aug 2017. Great condition, $8000 Van shelving system and cargo barrier suit VM transit but can modify easy to suit most. $450 Phone 0477567363 Bruce. Massage table, vgc, $50. Text 0427352958.

Dear Keenwa,

The holidays are coming and I’m already caught in the middle of family politics. Any advice for handling a very modern mixed family of stepsisters, ex-wives and baby mummas? - Peace Keeper

Dear Peace Keeper,

I guess you should of thought of that before you moved to Mullumbimby. The whole polyamory commune thang might be heavy on the pros throughout the rest of the year, but dang those cons are costly over the cheery season. And that’s just the kilos of cashew cheese. Nobody wants to piss off Mrs. Claus. You’re going to need litres of celebratory kombuchu, hundreds of raw chocolates and enough fabric for your own kimono sweatshop. To avoid even further complications next year, I suggest not skimping on the most important item on the joyous season shopping list...vegan condoms.

What are your thoughts on “Responsible Dog Owners”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents and you’re in to win a $25 Get Toasted voucher!

Responsible Dog Owners, Anonymous _____________________________________

After having my daily swim at Belongil, I was horrified to see 2 bags of Dog poo left on the sand where us locals and visitors sit before swimming. With the incoming tide, we would end up swimming with it, no owner in sight. Please dont just take the bags to pick up your dogs droppings, letting us think your doing the right thing, then leave it on the sand because you dont want to carry or dispose of it. Please keep our special place here in Byron clean and remove your dogs droppings from our beaches.

Congrats Anonymous, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. Dear Key Finder, Mumma Relieved _____________________________________

This is a message of thanks to the kind person who found my car keys on the lighthouse path (near Little Wategoes). You saved my bacon and a whole lotta stress. After a few wonderful hours exploring the lighthouse path and all the beaches with the anklebiters it was time to head back North with some tired, hungry and hot munchkins. Upon reaching the car I realised my keys were gone, panic set in. It turned out a nice guy had picked up my keys and asked everyone he passed if they’d lost their keys, he even told people that if you see someone locked out of the car that their keys will be at the cop shop (they were). If you are reading this Mr. Key Finder - thank you so much, I hope you pick the winning lotto tickets soon.

Thursday and Friday are rather complicated days because of highly contradictory planetary influences. Thursday morning we have a Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius which indicates a rather rational and serious mental approach to the otherwise boisterous and maybe over-optimistic Archer’s way of thinking and communicating. At the same time a Jupiter/Pluto square is building up and is exact on Friday when Pluto unites with Venus in Capricorn. All this sets us up for intense feelings and inner conflict which might result in a lack of confidence or tolerance. It can also manifest as compulsive behaviour and irritation. Sunday morning might bring some relief, good ideas and conversations. The New Moon time in Sagittarius on Tuesday has a philosophical, inspirational and a little bit hot-blooded flavour with four planets in Sagittarius (Sun, Moon, Mercury and Saturn). Doing something out of the ordinary and connecting with nature would be great fun! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The Ram is known for his subjective view of the world he lives in. With the Star Tarot card you have plenty of faith and inspiration for any of your current projects. Now you see and understand the bigger picture and you can weave all the different strands of your reality together in a new and harmonious way. Relating from this place is easy and fun.

h

a

Libra The Hierophant symbolises old wisdom of the ages, wisdom you can personify this week, relying on your acquired experience and trusting what you know to be true in your world. The planetary flavour of this week and your own inner search for meaning and truth may lead you to very deep contemplations and new insights.

b

Taurus The 7 of Wands stands for fear of failure, doom and gloom. While it is important to assess and evaluate certain situations, it is also important to realise that you are stuck in a very negative mindframe. This constricts your vision and makes you focus on limitation. Try to open up to new ways of thinking and different strategies.

Scorpio The Prince of Wands is a token for inspiration, and he has a ‘can-do’ attitude when it comes to any challenge. You might feel ready for a trip, an exploration or an adventure of any kind, and you are driven by a deep passion for everything that makes you feel good, fired up and alive.

i

c

Gemini The Princess of Cups relates to the world through her emotional guidance system; if it feels good it must be good! Or as Bob Marley said: ‘Who feels it, knows it.’ This way of ‘thinking with your heart’ can save you a lot of mental trouble and you might find that some answers and truths are really much simpler than the busy Gemini mind makes out.

j

Sagittarius The Prince of Swords is driven by high ideals and new ideas. Many Archers value their personal freedom more than anything and are ready to defend it. This week however, you are challenged to investigate your own inner, compulsive drives and realise how they restrict you and lead to big detours at times.

Cancer The 5 of Disks speaks of stress and worries that might be taxing your health or at least make you tired and overwhelmed. It is best not to focus on any negative ‘what if’ futuristic scenarios, but to stay right in the moment and find something that you can appreciate, be grateful for and relax with.

Capricorn Things are looking up this week; the 6 of Wands promises recognition and success. Doors might open and win-win deals can be made. Feeling good and confident gets you results, and results, in turn, make you feel good and confident!

k

e

l

f

Leo The Princess of Swords symbolises the rebellious fighting spirit of a teenager. It is important to realise that any of your provocative actions might actually be reactions to your own inner tensions, and don’t necessarily depend on the behaviour of anyone else. Seeing and acknowledging that takes a lot of courage! Virgo When the Death card appears it is time to let go and move on. A major phase or aspect of your life might come to an end and the more you resist it, the more painful it gets. However every ending carries the seed of a new beginning. You might find some relief by focusing on that and allow the transformation to take place.

d

Aquarius The Queen of Swords relies on her cool and detached intellect most of the time. This week however, strong feelings might go straight to your heart. Allow yourself to be totally, authentically you, otherwise you pay the price of irritation or reacting with a short fuse.

Pisces The 6 of Swords increases the alignment between heart and mind and helps you through this tumultuous week. Integrity, a clear mind and clear communication open up opportunities to overcome past misunderstandings and difficulties, and they pave the way for a brighter future.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / POSITIVITY IS A SUPERPOWER If you want to shift out of rigid, fear based paradigms and patterns, start with making positivity a practice. Consciously upgrade your thoughts. Be selective about the narratives and storylines you engage with. Be discerning about the words you choose. Every moment matters because by being more positive, you become more positive. And not just in an esoteric way. It’s called neuroplasticity. Science is showing that repetitive positive thought and behaviors can actually rewire your brain, strengthen feel-good centers in the brain and stimulate more positive vibes. In other words, positivity is a practice first and foremost. And then, in time, positivity becomes an outcome as a cheerful result of your dedication. What begins as a small choice gives you the opportunity to change your brain, and upgrade your long-term life experience. Positivity is a practice, an advantage, and a freakin superpower. So go’on and get the good vibes going. Pick positivity.
