This Saturday night, The Bella Fontes are bringing calypso cabaret to the Ewingsdale Hall with hilarious enthusiasm, supported by The Lighthouse Voices Choir. Tickets are $20 and there will be delicious Brazilian food available from 6pm (the show starts at 7pm). Book your tickets at stickytickets.com.au. In Ocean Shores, the Art Expo is on over the weekend. The launch party and awards night on Friday starts at 7pm and costs $10. This is an excellent community event and the quality of work on display is of a really high standard. If some of our usual spots feel a bit quiet over the weekend, it might be because a lot of locals are heading to the Free Spirit Festival. On top of an array of electronic music, there’s going to be a wellness village, artspace and keynote speakers, including Ray Thorpe (Happy Herbs Founder) and Dan Schreiber (Starseed Gardens). It’s being held on a private property an hour away and tickets are free for members ($36). In Brunswick Heads ‘Weeds and Waves’ Landcare Adventure is also on. This is a free event for 18-30 year olds, where you get to meet people, plant trees, learn about our area, weed and cruise the river. Book your space by emailing alison.ratcliffe@byron.nsw.gov.au. Enjoy! Photography Credit: Carly Brown

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa
Dear Keenwa,
Why is it okay to throw a glass bottle into the ocean but not okay for a dude to wear leather pants? - Dozy Double Denim
Dear Dozy Double Denim,
Probably because the bottle didn’t kill an innocent animal and is 100% compostable and biodegradable, obvs. If all went to plan, the extxt lover of the bottle thrower jumped overboard and retrieved the message, just before all that started to happen anyways. In the case that one lucky day in the future a wise man does invent biodegradable, cruelty free leather, permission will be granted. Until then Dozy Double Denim, sounds like you know what to do.

Dear Keenwa,
I’ve recently moved to the area from the city wanting a slower pace of life. But I’m finding it difficult to find work. I had a high-ranking corporate job in the city and every time I apply for a job in Byron I’m told I’m overqualified. Could this be true or are they letting me down gently because I still smell like the city? - Street Trash
Dear Street Trash,
You reek. If you’d been here longer than five minutes you ‘d know we actually don’t have jobs in Byron, they’re for the 10-buck hourly backpackers. We do soul work here. If you wanna live like a true local you need to stick your middle finger up at the boss guy and the rest of patriarchy, and drop into your soft feminine Byron space. There are loads of yoga and tantra classes going at concession prices if you need help with that. Then get yourself in the water for a wave, or head on down to the farmers market and you may just end up finding yourself your life’s work, because as Rumi says, “what you seek is seeking you.”
Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Packing Up Sustainable Profits Business Philosophy: Why should we care about coffee cups and napkins other than to grab a caffeine hit or to wipe a green smoothie off our lips? Well, the answer is sustainability. Where did the cup and napkin come from? How was it made and where will it end up? Byron based hospitality distributer, Alpacka, has answers in a shared vision with one of their key product partners, BioPak. They aim to provide their clients with the highest quality most environmentally sustainable packaging. Full Moon River Kayak Tour

Point Of Difference: Sustainability and profitability go hand in hand for BioPak and Alpacka. BioPak ensures each of their product’s impact on the planet is minimal in every stage from manufacture to distribution to disposal. Paper products come from managed plantations and wherever possible recycled or bio-based materials are used for products like plastic cups. As the exclusive distributing partner of BioPak products in Byron Shire, Jane from Alpacka says “being able to work with BioPak who donate a portion of their profits back to causes such as The Rainforest Alliance and offsetting their carbon emissions is a real honour for us and a plus for the eco-conscious community here.” Success Story: Consumers are more informed about sustain-
able products and services than ever before and that translates into their buying decisions. Andy from Alpacka explains “more business owners are making the sustainable switch to meet their customers demands. There can be a little price resistance to begin with but once they understand the cost is small and they see the value in sustainable packaging it becomes an easy choice. In fact, the early adopters of our sustainable products are enjoying the benefits already. It’s a two-fold approach for us and BioPak to educate consumers and businesses about sustainable choices whilst providing sustainable products too.”

‘Mental as anything’ is the motto for this week! With Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in Virgo this is the time to meticulously and efficiently get to work on all those (boring) details that you have been trying to avoid in the last few weeks. This is particularly important because Mercury will start a 3 weeks retrograde stint on Wednesday (31st). Be extra careful with hidden agendas and read the fine print on anything you need to sign. From Friday onwards Neptune is square to Saturn and Mars, and mental clarity might be compromised. Sunday is a marvellous day for a get-together with friends and family, and some healthy scrumptious food. A Mercury/Venus conjunction on Monday and Tuesday is perfect for a meeting, conference or for networking, just in time before the Mercury retrograde period. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
Aries The Empress brings up leadership issues this week; you are challenged to not only lead with your strong head but also with a soft heart. From this perspective leadership and service have a lot in common. Don’t be afraid of your own tenderness. and allow yourself time to recharge your batteries in nature.
a
Libra The Knight of Cups indicates that matters of the heart are important this week. Combined with the very Virgoan flavour of this time, you might want to ponder how to give more of yourself and be of service to the people you love and admire. Some good news might be coming too...
b
h
Taurus The Bull is known for his determination and perseverance. Combined with the Strength card drawn, this is the perfect week to rekindle your motivation to get off the couch and beyond your comfort zone. As you get mentally and physically fit, you regain your zest for life and you feel on top of the world.
Scorpio The Prince of Disks asks you to take care of all the little details in your day-to-day world that are easily overlooked when you have the big picture in mind. It is time to wrap up loose ends and catch up with bookkeeping and financial planning. Improving your physical health through exercise and a balanced diet is also very timely.
i
c
Gemini The 10 of Wands often indicates a time when you feel exhausted because you have been working really hard or shouldering extra burdens for too long. It is now time to lighten your load and to stop overextending yourself with responsibilities and duties. Remove yourself from oppressive situations, at least temporarily, and give yourself some time off to regain your strength.
j
Cancer The overly mental and analytical flavour of this week, combined with the 7 of Swords might tint your overall outlook with dark, grey mental fog. Negative self-talk may evoke a sense of futility, or lead to self-sabotage and heavy self-judgement. If this is your experience, ask your best friend about personal feedback and really take it in.
k
Leo The Temperance Tarot card challenges you to find more balance in your life; moderation is the key to finding inner equilibrium. If you work too hard, make more time for creativity and fun; if you play too hard and exhaust yourself, it is time to follow your dreams and visions to find more meaning in life.
l
Virgo The Ace of Disks is bound to bring you success this week. Whatever you have been working on lately is starting to flourish and have some real-world impact. Use this week wisely to tie up any loose ends, especially concerning mail, messages and contracts, before Mercury goes retrograde in your sign.
Sagittarius Heart-opening new adventures are promised by the Prince of Wands, who is often called ‘Prince Charming’. Whether your target takes the form of travel, creativity or romance, you are powerfully inspired to shoot your arrow of passion directly into its centre. Your daring and confident attitude sweeps away any resistance.
d
Capricorn Your drive and ambitions can easily turn you internal voice into ‘slave-driver’ mode. That’s when you ask too much of yourself and you bring out the ‘whip’. The Prince of Swords challenges you to examine these thoughts, attitudes and beliefs that drive you too hard, and take a toll on your mental or physical health. They are best replaced by an inspired and compassionately caring attitude towards yourself.
e
Aquarius This week the Ace of Wands asks you to fire up those creative juices with confidence, enthusiasm and courage. Believe in yourself and know that things are working out just fine. It is important to expand your vision into new areas. Any bottling up of emotions, postponing desires or neglecting needs, is bound to culminate in an explosion of some sort.
f
Pisces The Moon Tarot card shines an elusive light on everything you encounter this week. This is not the time to make big decisions, rather immerse yourself in a creative outlet as much as possible, and allow the emotional high tides to recede before you make any final assessment of a situation, or start a new direction.

Got something to say? - Well here's your chance ... Olympic Dream, Bad Sport _____________________________________
This may sound like a bad sportsman but I think the hype of the Olympic Games seems to be just background noise these days, I remember when the whole Country stopped everything they were doing to watch the TV for weeks while it took over our airwaves. Maybe it was because Australia would dominate in the swimming, win so many medals and make you proud to be an Aussie, now the athletes are making more news outside of the sports they repersent and not as many medals are being won. The older I get the more I’m losing interest, and get the feeling maybe Australia doesn’t take this every four year event as serious as it used too? Or is it the variety of sports are not being promoted enough in school? Whatever the reason I’m glad it’s over!
Congrats Bad Sport, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize.

__________________________________________ Dear men of Byron Bay, When I am out with my girlfriends having a good time and cutting shapes on the D-floor, please note that my rump shaking is not an invitation! Me dancing does not equal open season for every dude to grind up on me. Here’s a hot tip: rather than just randomly moving closer and closer to a chick on the dancefloor until you’re casually rubbing up on her (this is the modern equivalent of the yawnand-arm-stretch movie theatre move), how about you man up, buy a girl a drink (no strings attached) and ask if she’d like to dance. Or better yet, just buy a drink and shoot a smile her way. If she’s into you, she’ll move your way you. I personally guarantee if you stop acting like a brainless animal in heat you’ll actually win more hearts (or whatever other body part you’re gunning for).

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / LIBERATE YOUR LOVE As yoga teacher Eoin Finn so wisely reminds us, “love is the ultimate renewable resource.” So uncage your heart. Let your love shine. Give it freely and indiscriminately. You need it. We need it. The world needs it. Now more than ever. Waking up to stories of total devastation in the news, an unexpected phone call delivering heartbreak, an email carrying message of a loss or illness....this can all leave us feeling powerless, paralysed and fearful. What has the world come to...how unfair, why, how, did this happen. And what if it happens to me. Here’s the thing you can do right now: love more. Love is power. Love is the antidote to fear and pain and suffering. It’s medicine, it’s peace. It’s understanding and unity. IT MATTERS. We are not separate. So start loving that way. Stop waiting for the world to change and start participating. Love more deeply. Give your love more freely. Expand your heart to hold more. Hug someone. Listen. Hold hands. Hold space. Kiss. Smile. Look people in the eye, all people. See yourself in them. Pay attention. Pay a compliment. Send a text. Pick up the phone. Pick up a piece of litter. Pick up the check. Say thank you. Say please. Say yes. Say I love you. Show your gratitude. Show compassion. Say, “I understand.” Forgive. These are all small acts of love. Love is creative- you create it. Love is an act of rebellion against suffering and injustice and separateness and pain and anxiety and fear. The revolution of love starts with you. So get your heart out. Put it on your sleeve. Liberate your love. Be a warrior for love. The world is aching for it.

>> A quick chat with a Byron local (or a local at heart)>> CAITLIN WEATHERSTONE Business Name: Wild Search Byron Bay Job Title: Head Wild Woman Instagram: @wildsearch @rewildingwomen Website: wildsearchbyronbay.com.au The vice you’ll never give up? I regularly give up things that I know aren’t serving me – in the last year I have stopped wearing makeup, drinking alcohol and (very Byron) shaving! Social media and my phone often annoy me and I battle that by hiking/camping somewhere I know doesn’t have signal!
Why did you start Wild Search Byron Bay? The modern world is so disconnected from nature. This is a big problem, because we are nature! We all breathe air, use natural resources, grow food in soil, drink fresh water, rely on biodiversity and need love in order to survive! Somewhere along the line, we seem to have forgotten our roots and these connections and we’re in all sorts of trouble because of it. My aim is to connect people with their wild to enhance their lives and to ensure the protection of nature into the future.
What should everyone try at least once in life? You need to get nude in nature. Seriously! You’ll wonder why you ever wore clothes!
I can’t live without… Trees and phytoplankton (literally), ocean breeze, family, good laughs with mates, organic food, the sisterhood and my hiking backpack filled with camping gear.
When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up? A vet, then a marine biologist, then a journalist/science writer, then a ranger, then a zookeeper…I basically just wanted to cuddle animals all day and save them, which I have got to do a lot of over the past 10 years.
The best advice you ever received? A good old Gandhi quote I like to live by - “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
How did you get your start in the industry? I studied a Bachelor of Wildlife Science and Masters of Tropical Ecology & Conservation for the better part of six years and in between that I was a nature/wildlife tour guide. I realised I’d much rather get people connected with nature than do the actual science. Science makes my brain hurt sometimes…
The best part of my job is… I get to meet amazing like-minded people (A.K.A. nature frothers) and I get to spend a lot of time in the bush and call it research!
