Festival Weddings Australia

It’s all happening in Byron this weekend. The fun begins on Friday with Brisbane comedian Lindsay Webb kicking off Comedy in the Garden, a free headline comedy night hosted by Byron Bay Brewery every Friday for the month of February; be there for 8pm. Friday will also see the beginning of Blue Flame Dreaming, which will see likeminded souls come together at the Byron Community Centre for three days to share the wisdom of indigenous people from around the world via storytelling, indigenous cuisine, ancient dance and more.

Uniting Love, Music, Festivals & Music! Pop Up & Bespoke Festival Weddings. 0418 192 554 festivalweddingsaustralia.com.au

The biggest gig this weekend, however, will see two of Australia’s best live acts – Xavier Rudd and Cat Empire – take to the stage at Red Devil Park on Saturday as part of a first-time, five-show tour together. They’ll be joined by fellow Aussie artists Sahara Beck, Ocean Alley and Harts from 3pm. If you’ve still got some energy left in the tank, head to the Billinudgel Hotel on Sunday arvo for Nudge Nudge Wink Wink, a free party in support of Byron Youth Theatre’s ‘Here Today’ project, an original production highlighting the complex issues surrounding youth suicide. Resident DJs Lord Sut and Dale Stephen will be joined by Nudge regular Al Royale and legendary Aussie DJ Phil Smart from 2-9:30pm. Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

Road Raging, Anonymous OK, I have had enough! The right lane is for overtaking people....people! Whilst I totally vibe off the slow down, chill out vibes of Byron, laws are laws. If you are not overtaking, then don't sit in the right-hand lane. Especially in your cute 1800's car doing 75km/h in a 110 zone. If we all do the right thing and stay left, traffic flows smoothly and congestion and delays can be avoided. Well until you hit the Johnson Street round-about, but that's another 2 Cents Worth. Congrats Anonymous, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “Road Raging”? Keep the convo going! Dear Keenwa,

I met this guy and we really clicked but when he told me he was having a night in, I saw him at the local pub with another girl. Do I call him out and let him know it’s not cool or do I let it slide like I always do? - Small Town

Dear Small Town, Oh no you don't! You give him the benefit of the doubt first, of course. Does he have a twin? Was he accompanying his dying sister to the pizza shop for her last meal? Then you nail him. Because, you're not God. It’s not up to you to protect douchebags from uncomfortable confrontations. He made his bed. It’s your job to speak your truth, which is that you are a freaking babe, with many other better options and he is wasting your precious time. You could be mastering gluten free pastry or teaching yourself Portuguese instead of texting him. Because if you don't respect yourself, whose going to? Then you thank him. You dodged a bullet girlfriend. Better to see this weak ass 'lord' out at the pub then experience his lack of manhood between the sheets, on your clock.

Dear Keenwa,

Our babysitter is vegetarian and now my kids seem to have taken a liking to it, too. How do I let her know that I want my kids to be meat eaters without getting into a debate over animal rights? - Meat Eater

Dear Meat Eater, As you're probably aware by now, a true vego will tell anyone, anywhere within five minutes of their dietary status. You would of known had you conducted an interview, which we obviously don't do around these parts, happy to hire whoever answers the ad. The real question here is, do you ever want to be able to escape your children again? I once tolerated a 'non-smoking' nanny who chainsmoked herself to sleep each night in her room, just happy that she woke up to start work the next day, and that the house had not burnt down. Then, there was the recovering sex addict with bipolar (with a very transparent social media account thank gawd) that babysat for one quick hour whilst I worked hard on convincing my elderly neighbour to change her shopping day. True stories. Ahhh attachment parenting, it sure ain't easy.

Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - YOU ARE ENTIRELY UP TO YOU Reminder: How you do YOU is all on you. You are responsible for your vibe. And your dreams. And your relationships. And your destiny. You are responsible for what is working in your life. And you are responsible for what’s not working in your life. No one else can fix that. Take responsibility for yourself and you realise that you are limitless potential. When you own your role as creator of your reality, you take back the power. You stop blaming others, you stop pointing fingers, you stop looking outward and you start making stuff happen. GOOD STUFF. Great stuff. Because YOU DA BOSS OF YOU. The way you feel, the thoughts you think, the words you speak, the vibes you broadcast, the company you keep, the habits you hold, the dreams you dream, the goals you kick, how you value you, how you spend your time, what you're capable of, what you do with your days and your life....it's all entirely up to you. You are entirely up to you. Now go on now, go do you, your way.

This week starts off with a Mercury/Uranus square which might have an impact on your travel plans; be prepared for delays. Communication can also be troubled; there might be misunderstandings and impatience. At the same time a Mercury/Chiron sextile facilitates great insights into the workings and traps of our minds. On Saturday Venus moves beyond watery Pisces into fiery Aries. Here she represents the archetype of the warrior woman ‘Xena’; she is agile and spirited, and she is ready to fight for her freedom any time! Now that we have Venus and Mars in Aries things can get quite feisty and very short-fused indeed! For the next two weeks they travel in close proximity of five degrees to each other but actually never truly meet because Venus is slowing down, preparing to turn retrograde in early March. On Tuesday Jupiter (in Libra) is the first planet to turn retrograde after a month of only forward motion in our solar system. Until early June you might experience a tendency to procrastinate, plan and re-plan and change plans one more time. Globally it gets increasingly difficult to differentiate the real truth from fake news and mass propaganda. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The 2 of Swords indicates that you might be trying really hard to be patient and peaceful, even though you get triggered a lot. Just make sure that your unwillingness to rock other people’s boats does not backfire onto yourself. Meditation and contemplation of what apparent polarities have in common might be helpful.

h

Taurus The Emperor embodies power, perseverance and leadership. This masculine energy is best used to make new plans, develop strategies and build new foundations for a project or business. You don’t mind working hard and you feel instantly rewarded if you can create order out of any chaos that might surround you.

i

a

Libra Justice, also called Adjustment, is the most Libran card in the deck. If you have to make big decisions or are busy adjusting to new circumstances, simplifying your life may help you to restore balance and harmony on every level. This is especially important if you are dealing with legalities or if you have to make financial decisions.

b

Scorpio The Hermit card implies that this week you feel best in your own company. Maybe you feel like retreating into your own private space and your own inner worlds because you have a bit of soul-searching to do? Completing unfinished business is also on the cards...

c

Gemini Just like last week the World Tarot Card is drawn! This suggests that you are in the middle of a huge revamping of the world around you. You can apply your gift for communication and organisation in such a way that dreams might come true and heart desires may be achieved. It may just take a little bit longer than you thought...

Sagittarius The 3 of Disks describes an important step in the development of a project or the fulfilment of a dream; it is the shift from doubt to certainty that makes all the difference! It increases your energy, commitment and focus, and it definitely brings you closer to the desired results.

j

Cancer The Ace of Cups is the big gift of an open heart, trusting yourself and the universe. Feeling nurtured, secure and supported you are eager to share this gift with your loved ones and from here on it ripples out into the world, generating grace and goodwill.

Capricorn With the 7 of Disks drawn this is the week to assess what is working in your life and what is not; just make sure that your evaluation is real. The danger is that your ideals set the yardstick for success so high that no matter how hard you work, you never really get there. It might be helpful to ask friends for feedback.

k

Leo The Sun Tarot card is the quintessential Leo card; full of energy and with a real zest for life. You might be bursting with creative, inspiring or innovative ideas and you are extremely productive right now. Your vitality is highly contagious and you are an inspiration for others.

Aquarius A wonderful week ahead for the socially inclined Water-bearer! The 6 of Cups speaks of a blissful state of happiness and fulfilment that engulfs you. It ripples out into the world as goodwill and benevolence that is enjoyable for friends and colleagues, and especially for children.

l

Pisces With the Judgment card drawn you are likely to ponder the bigger picture and you might need to make important decisions this week. As you tune out of the messages your ‘inner critic’ bombards you with and tune into your ‘inner knowing’ the answers reveal themselves effortlessly.

Virgo The 10 of Swords indicates that you might be trapped in a cycle of negative thinking. Matters of the heart or trouble with finances may have triggered this descent. Consciously remember all the things that are working out in your life; this is the antidote that can help you to recover more quickly.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

COCOTERO CREW

Georgia, Maria, Shantal and Carolina

“Forget The Forecast, Pray To Huey”, who is Huey? Our grandparents used to say “When rain poured into the garden after drought, car'n Huey!”. They sang as storm clouds turned dark over the hills after a long hot summer day. Huey makes the wind blow and the waves roll. For a surfer, he is God. Put your phone back in your pocket, stop looking for wifi, Forget The Forecast, Pray To Huey! Can you tell us a little about how Cocotero Crew started? We are an artistic agency who grew from travel stories and strong black coffee, shared between two artists - Caro and Georgia. A simple concept; a community of artists who work remotely from different backgrounds and disciplines. We share ideas, support each other and collaborate with our work. Can anyone be part of your crew? We have some guidelines; enjoy drinking lots of coffee and/or wine. Travel without plans and be able to tell a good story. Have less than 1,000 followers on instagram. What does Cocotero actually mean? Cocotero means coconut tree in Spanish but for us it's much more than that. It’s a lifestyle. The feeling of a tropical environment, freedom, happiness every time that you see a coconut tree, that’s Cocotero, that’s Cocotero Crew. ‘SuperSuck wave’, what is it and why is it important? It’s a great wave but it’s the location that’s important to us. The Island of Sumbawa (east of Bali and Lombok) is rich in Indonesian culture and untouched nature. There are no mod cons as distractions; you can’t order a soy latte anywhere. This location allows for a great work/life balance. Your clothing is made in Indonesia and designed in Byron, where do you get your inspiration from? Huey was born one morning as we joked around with surf puns such as ‘morning sickness’ and ‘flat as a tack’. Stories were shared about surfboard sacrifices on the bonfire to make Huey happy. The ball was rolling; we put pencils to paper and started drawing a typeface and a character. Our Huey had a hairdo that you could get barrelled in and a beard you could feed a family from. The waves went flat and Pray to Huey grew from paper into a personality. CocoTero’s Crew's clothing and prints are available at http://www.merdekahouse.com/cocoterocrew or find them @cocoterocrew
