Around Town This Week

Remember Frenzal Rhomb? The Sydney punk rockers released a greatest hits album last year to mark 25 years in the business (way to make us feel old, right?) and you can catch them playing some of their best tunes at The Northern tonight. Come Saturday, Stone & Wood will be opening the gates of its Murwillumbah brewery in support of Wedgetail Retreat and Tweed Palliative Support. Come along to the family friendly open day (11am to 5pm) for live music and half-hourly brewery tours, with a jumping castle for kids. Stone & Wood have brewed an exclusive ‘pilot batch’ just for the day, an ode to the infamous ‘Murbah Swamp Beer’ (go on, Google it), and there’ll be a convoy of the region’s best food trucks on-hand to keep bellies full. Early next week, the Ocean Film Festival comes to town. The awe-inspiring selection of short films shot above and below the ocean’s surface will be screened at Byron Theatre from 7pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday also marks a special day for the shire’s seniors – in celebration of this week’s NSW Seniors Festival, Mullumbimby Civic Hall will be hosting activities and events for the whole family from 9am, including a morning tea and the Positive Ageing Awards. 2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

MY RELIGION ISN'T MY RACE!, Anonymous It's time people and the media stopped confusing religion and race. My race is the mix of peoples that I bring from my background. My religion is my set of beliefs. Some would say your religion is your fairytale, your superstitions, your magical thinking. Others would say it's your spiritual guidance and beliefs that support your choices, your morality, your direction. But your religion isn't your race! Christianity isn't a race. Buddhism isn't a race. Islam isn't a race. You might talk down a religion but you'd be 'religionist!' Now that's a good word. Much more accurate than 'racist'. SUPERMARKET WOES, Anonymous

CHINESE LANGUAGE CLASS – 4 WEEKS Beginners Mandarin. 7 to 9pm; Wednesdays & Sundays; 15th Mar–9th Apr at Lennox Head Community Centre. To secure your spot & more info please call Miao 0426 016 658

I feel compelled to write to the community after witnessing on two separate occasions at my local supermarket customers belittling the junior register attendant. I was frozen in absolute shock that these adults felt it acceptable to lose their cool with innocent shop assistants and yell and swear at these kids to get their points across. On both occasions the innocent kid was really trying to help the customer and was getting abused for it. It just makes me wonder about Byron Bay and it’s supposed image of a community of open minded, forward thinking people. It’s definitely not alive and well in Sunrise. I feel sad for the customer who has lost all control and for the child working his first real job and being confronted with this.... It’s not good enough. Order your shopping online if you can’t keep it together in a supermarket and please seek counselling. Congrats SUPERMARKET WOES, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Dear Keenwa, I lost my new board out at The Pass as I was riding without a leggie, I've been feeling so down as I really loved it, what are your thoughts on a crowdfunding campaign? - Fund Me Dear Fund Me, Nothing like getting your mates to put their hardearned money where your mouth shoulda been. Like, insurance dude. Although we care deeply about the waves you catch and it sincerely pains me that you may have to take up an alternative free and rewarding past time such as bodysurfing, stats do show that people with strong community support behind them have better immune systems, more chance at recovering from chronic health conditions and less mental health issues. I'm just wondering if you might be able to pay our generosity forward and donate say 1% of sales to starving children or war torn families? Dear Keenwa, After a good session I love nothing more than kicking back on the bonnet of the car with a buddy in the car park whilst my locks drip dry in the sun. If I've paid the meter to do so, is it still a faux pas? Cranky people asking me if I'm leaving every two minutes kinda wrecks my vibe. - Minute Maid Dear Minute Maid, No, take your time bro. While you're enjoying the good life, re-living each spray in its glory, the rest of us will just do another 12 laps to be sure you're comfy. Take off to the next beach and do the same thing there until someone's meter runs out. Then drag our sweating, screaming post-school kids, and their short, slow-moving, whining legs against the southerly all the way down the beach, arms full of gear. Then, after a joyous five minutes of leisure we'll turn around and repeat in order to make it back in time for work. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

H E A V I L Y M E D I TAT E D with

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - BE YOUR OWN GURU If you're feeling depleted, down in the dumps, uninspired, unsupported, unloved, unsure, not-enough, or just a little lessthan...GO TO THE SOURCE. Go within to get what you need. Be your own guru. Nothing and no one outside of you can make you happier, more inspired, more loved, more beautiful, more complete than you are right now. That's ALL on you. EVERYTHING you need, want, are waiting for, is already within you. All of the the love, all of the bliss, all of this wisdom, all of the confidence you are wandering through your life looking for is already within you, waiting to be unearthed, shaken loose and brought to light. All of the answers you are looking for in your life are already within you. Every single one. The answers are buried within you like diamonds in a coal mine. They may be shrouded by old stories, self-doubt and second-guessing, but they are there, waiting for you to open your eyes and see them. It's ALL there. You just need to mine your inner resources. The most effective way to do this? MEDITATION. In meditation we dive beneath the surface of the material, thinking world and awaken to the awe, intelligence, wisdom, divinity that resides within us. We detach ourselves from the barrage of information + analysis, and we tune into our instincts + intuition. Meditation gifts us with the ability to be clear about what is true and in integrity with our higher self. Meditation offers us the ability to fill up our own cup, to answer our own questions, to light our own way. It may sound like a miracle. And it it is. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself. Commit to a daily meditation for 7 days and watch what happens.

From Thursday to Saturday Sun, Mercury and Neptune unite in Pisces; boundaries are blurry and confusion amplified. It might be much easier and definitely more pleasurable to express yourself creatively and artistically, especially non-verbally. Compassion and meditation are also enhanced. On Sunday Venus in Aries turns retrograde for five weeks; from here on relationships and personal values are under revision and scrutiny. A Mars/ Saturn trine, exact on Monday, brings a well-timed reality check on many issues which kept us fired up during the last few weeks. This is especially beneficial while Sun and Mercury still flow together, gracing us with a dreamscape of inspiration and creativity. This whole week is perfect for writers and musicians. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries Your zest for life and adventure is amplified by Venus, Mars and Uranus in your sign, and the Strength Tarot card drawn. Passion and creativity drive you to new heights of experience and you conduct yourself with unshakable determination. You might feel like you’re ready for anything!

h

Taurus The Queen of Wands symbolises the goddess in her passionate and compassionate form; she is active, receptive and at times temperamental. This is a great week to use your charm and charisma to create powerful impressions and to wholeheartedly commit to a cause.

i

Gemini The Twins’ weakness is obsessive and frantic thinking which leads to nervous overload and burnout. The 10 of Swords drawn describes a time when it is difficult to drag yourself out of a negative mindset. The attitude of gratitude is a good remedy; as you start focusing on appreciation of the things that work out in your life, you feel better...

j

Cancer The Six of Cups suggests that it is the perfect time

to enjoy contact with friends, family and your wider community. You are in a kind and charitable mood; nurturing others might bring even more fulfilment than being on the receiving side of goodwill. Time with children is very enjoyable too.

k

Leo The Hermit suggests an inward journey for this

week; minimising distractions and choosing time alone provides you with the space for introspection that you are craving deep inside. Maybe there are some loose ends that need to be tied up and you are searching for new significance, meaning and purpose in your life.

l

Virgo This week it’s you turn to celebrate life, your accomplishments, endings and beginnings. The World Tarot card tickles your sense of adventure and your readiness to explore new perspectives, new places and maybe a new lifestyle. Using your gifts and talents you may create reality out of what so far has only been a dream.

a

Libra Right place, right time and right action are three components that the Magician masters; this is how he gets what he wants. You may have an insight or ‘aha’ moment into how manifestation happens for you, and how you too can produce magical results and create miracles. Any conversation that you have been dreading can turn out surprisingly harmonious, especially if you employ your deep listening skills.

b

Scorpio The Wheel of Fortune is a positive card but might send you on an emotional rollercoaster by overstimulation of your desire nature. You may become aware of fixed opinions and routine habits that keep you locked into old patterns, and seek to grow beyond the cycle of over-indulgence and regret.

c

Sagittarius The Knight of Wands is the quintessential visionary; he has much in common with the Archer’s ‘can do’ attitude, and his inherent need for adventure takes him far and wide. This week you might just take another leap of faith and jump deeply into uncharted territory. You’ll enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

d

Capricorn The Temperance Tarot card invites you to look at your life as an art form; balanced in moderation and flourishing in connection to your loved ones and your purpose. Avoid excess, especially driving yourself too hard, and make sure that your inner self-talk is kind and caring while you are taking care of business. Always factor in extra time to smell the roses...

e

Aquarius The 9 of Swords symbolises the negative trap a busy mind can fall into. Something might have rocked your boat and now you find yourself stuck in self-judgement or in a worry pattern. These thoughts create more anxiety and are self-perpetuating. To find some relief, take a couple of deep breaths and start focusing on what is working well in your life.

f

Pisces This week you might feel you have no time to waste; you are ready to act and react quickly and with new-found certainty. The Knight of Swords infuses you with determination that may surprise you as well as others. In conversations you are alert, sharp and straight to the point. A trip into the unknown might look very promising and enticing.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

ANDREW CAMERON

Founder of Byron Grass Fed & Manager at Byron Creek Farm What does regenerative farming actually mean? I like to describe it as producing food whilst giving back to the land, not just taking from it as we have done for so long with conventional agriculture. Not just producing food but regenerating and improving our land as we go. You provide grass fed beef for purchase from local farmers. What’s the difference between grass and grain fed? Hmm could say a lot here…. I guess quite simply grass fed is in tune with nature, grain fed is not. Cows eat grass and are only supposed to eat grass, it is a free source of energy that is created by the sun, grain requires large conventional agricultural input, lots of energy and generally fairly heavy on chemicals, it can actually change the fat in the animal and not for the better. Do you believe you can eat meat and not feel guilty about it? Absolutely, although it isn’t easy, one of the main reasons I started BGF is because I couldn’t find the type of meat I believe we should be eating. It always comes down to knowing your food - where it’s from, how it was raised, who grew it, connecting to the source. It might seem more expensive, but why should we buy from local farmers? Oh so many reasons. Mainly, and it might sound a bit extreme but buying from local farmers basically means you’re not supporting a system that is pretty much destroying the earth. Food from local farmers isn’t expensive, it’s just what it costs to do things properly. A good thing to remember is cheap food isn’t cheap, it’s very costly on our planet and our health. That is undeniable. You’re a self taught farmer who left the city for Byron, what advice can you give someone wanting to get into local farming? It’s a very big commitment but I would say dive in and start woofing/volunteering. Find farms that resonate with your mission and get your hands dirty! Talk with farmers, read books for inspiration but also keep in mind that there is great importance to growing food a better way. It’s pretty special and rewarding to be part of that if you're willing to do the work, it pays to keep that in mind as the work does get hard. How do you like your chicks? Haha, ah well I guess let’s just say happy and healthy ;) You play an important role in educating the community on ethical farming, what’s next for you? Aside from building BGF up and assisting with BCF, I do want to share my knowledge and hopefully start creating some courses/ events to get people more connected to nature and their food source. Whilst slowly planning my dream farm in the back of my head!

Sign up to the newsletter at byrongrassfed.com.au to find out where you can get some local beef or visit @byroncreekfarm for all your chicken needs.
