This week sees Mullum get into the festival spirit as the Byron Spirit Festival returns for another year with a packed schedule of workshops and panels on yoga, music, culture, dance, healing and world music. Held in various venues around Mullum from Friday to Sunday, the fest also includes live music from 6pm every night. The gig to catch this week, however, is Project Jurassic at the Lennox Hotel from 9:30pm on Friday. Unearthed by Triple J, the local indie band’s newest single, Facepalm, was produced by Dave Atkins of Resin Dogs and Wolfmother.

If you’ve been thinking about investing in a Flow Hive, Saturday is the day to do it, with Cedar Anderson, creator of the revolutionary beehive, coming to Eden at Byron to supervise the first harvest of the nursery’s Flow Hive at 9:30am. There will be talks and giveaways throughout the day, with a free beekeeping smoker valued at $80 on offer for those who purchase a hive on the day. Come Sunday, it’s your chance to snap up tickets to Splendour in the Grass at The Northern, which will be hosting a presale for locals from 10am until 4pm. Following the lineup announcement on Wednesday, residents with postcodes 2478 through 2484 will be able to purchase tickets for the July fest for up to four people. Help the queue move faster by setting up your Moshtix account in advance. Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

STUNNED, Caitlin Weatherstone Has anyone else noticed how many jellyfish and bluebottles have been around in the last 2 months?! I was just swimming at the Pass, then BAM, a big, blue jellyfish basically electrocuted me and sent me to hospital with chest pains and breathing difficulties. Because there are no life guards at the Pass, there's no first aid (The Pass Cafe kindly gave me some vinegar and hot water, thanks guys!) and no signage even warning about jellyfish presence or what to do if you've been stung! Considering the large numbers of people who encounter jellyfish in the Bay during the warm months, we should at least have first aid information on hand, a warning system for stingers and a HOT shower to deactivate the venom at the Pass, Wategos, Tallows, Belongil, Main Beach and Clarks. Note to future self: the first aid for a tropical jellyfish sting is to apply vinegar, then a hot shower for 20 mins! WHEN ADVERTISING BECOMES THERAPY, Chad Kolcze In this busy little, sometimes overwhelming town we call home. It's a welcomed relief to have the time to sip a porcelain filled, no landfill coffee and read the Bazaar. In my own time, with no agenda and no commitments. Total in the moment latte pampering Bliss. Then to read the ad on page 6, 'Heavily Meditated', which comes across as an article. Still unsure? It reminds me to live life in the moment and not to judge. It makes the honey dripped coffee that much sweeter and an experience of being on the right track is empowering and beautiful to observe! Boom! Congrats Chad, your submission has won you and a friend coffee and a sweet treat! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “WHEN ADVERTISING BECOMES THERAPY”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

Dear Keenwa, I've noticed those lovely hula women practicing down at Little Wategos at sunrise on my morning stroll and am dying to join them. Is it gender specific? I'm a plumber. - Pipe Dreams Dear Pipe Dreams, Back in the day before hula was considered vulgar and disgusting by the missionaries and banned for being pagan worshipping, this language of the heart ritual actually celebrated the sacredness of the masculine. As we know, nothing screams strong fella like a man dressed in bright floral attire. A real warrior embraces both his manliness and his softer side, dances fluidly between his inner man and woman. So I'm sure the ladies will welcome you with open arms, obviously the real question here is, what do your pins look like in a loincloth? Dear Keenwa, I don't use any chemicals around the house or in my family's beauty products, except for the dishwasher. Those eco tablets never clean the dishes properly. I want to be 100% green but I don't want to wash dishes. Help! - Green Thumb Dear Green Thumb, Hand washing the dishes? Are you insane? I think it's all above board if you're using recycled toilet water in the dishwasher, and all the traces of food on the fair-trade ceramic plates and cutlery is organic, raw and plant-based. As well as paying your own children award wages when they unpack it. You've heard of the 80/20 diet right? It's what you do most of the time that counts, or rather, what you hashtag on social media. Maybe also try cleansing the tablets with a green crystal before you load it into the machine, and I'm pretty sure there'll still be a place in eco-heaven for you. Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - LET LIFE FLOW THROUGH YOU

Things don't always go to plan or according to schedule. We can't push the river. When it ain't flowin', it ain't flowin'. All that pushing leaves us exhausted, tapped out, unfulfilled by that manic spread-too-thin sense and dizzy with frustration. So instead of being the river, be the riverbed. Let life flow through you. Rivers are seasonal. So are we. There are juicy stages where expression, energy, abundance and inspiration flow through us in great, dramatic gushes. There is the dazzling ecstasy of waterfalls. And there are dry-as-dust days, arid and parched, where nothing happens at all. There are times where we connect with the subtle elegance of a quiet but constant stream. There are moments of shadowy depth and afternoons of sun-speckled, ankle-deep wading. But it's all flow. It's all movement. It's all rhythm. And it's all good. Embrace the duality. Be the vessel and let life flow through you.

A Jupiter/Pluto square that has been with us for many months is exact on Friday; brace yourself for elevated stress levels. In the personal sphere tolerance and confidence are on an all-time low, and over-charged reactivity or compulsive behaviour might be triggered. Legal disputes and political unrest which we first encountered last November are likely to flare up all over the planet. On Sunday morning daylight saving time finishes, so turn your clock back one hour. On Monday retrograde Venus moves back into Pisces, covering the same old ground that she traversed in January. Any issues concerning your love-life, your personal values or needs, are now experienced in a much softer and more inclusive light than during the last two months when Venus was in fiery and warrior-like Aries. This is the week to complete any unfinished business, especially concerning travel arrangements or communication issues. It is also a good idea to service and back up your electronic devices; Mercury starts its three weeks retrograde stint on the 10th of March. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries The 2 of Cups symbolises love as a conscious choice and action in any given moment. From Monday onwards you have a great opportunity to resolve conflicts in a new, inclusive way, just by softening and opening your heart. Your capacity to love is deepening and you may find great satisfaction in giving as well as receiving.

h

Taurus The Tower Tarot card appears when sudden changes or upheaval challenge your security needs. Your plans may be disrupted by unforeseen circumstances or a situation that is beyond your control might shake you to the core of your being. Flexibility and adaptability are your allies for navigating this week.

i

Gemini The 8 of Swords indicates that your mind may be troubled by doubt, confusion or a dilemma that leaves you paralysed. You may be unable or unwilling to make a stand, your thoughts run in circles and you exhaust yourself by mulling over the same issues again and again. What if you don’t have to fix anything right now and you can just wait things out?

j

Cancer The Ace of Swords brings great mental clarity and decisiveness. You might be able to solve a problem that bugged you for a while, or you may be graced by a new insight. If you come up with an original invention this week, chances are that it leads to great success.

k

Leo The 3 of Wands demonstrates the interconnectedness of body, mind and spirit. Physical exercise, good nutrition and time to recharge your batteries provide you with the right balance, so you can whizz up some great plans, ideas and projects this week. Your ‘can do’ attitude motivates other people too.

l

Virgo This week your feeling good barometer reaches an all time high; the 10 of Cups may inspire you to count your blessings and embrace whole-heartedly all the good things and people that come your way. Your well-being radiates out to others and they might ask you what your secret recipe for happiness is.

a

Libra The 10 of Disks puts the emphasis on business and finance; it promises affluence and prosperity. Yet feeling rich or poor often is tied in with self-worth issues rather than with the digits on your bank statement. Self-acceptance and unconditional self-love build the foundations of your success in the world.

b

Scorpio The Prince of Wands fires you up this week and there is no other way than following your passionate and open heart. You might be in for an exciting adventure or you may find great inspiration for a creative project, but you must be confident enough to take a risk, show up and be true to yourself.

c

Sagittarius With the Ace of Wands drawn you may feel as if you’re sitting on top of a volcano trying to prevent an eruption. This week’s developments may take you beyond your ability to control a situation or be nice, into seeing and telling the truth, no matter how sharp or unsettling it may be. The less you hold back, the more zest for life and true inspiration is available to you.

d

Capricorn The Ace of Cups offers you the big gift of getting in touch with your deepest feelings and letting your heart lead the way. As you open up, the world around you responds; heart-to-heart communication unlocks the flood-gates of love, caring, nurturing and mutual support. This feels so much better than trying to control the flow of emotions, doesn’t it?

e

Aquarius The Temperance Tarot card invites you to reconnect with your long-term dreams and visions. Now is the time to mix and synthesise the different, sometimes opposite, ideals into one future path. This almost alchemical process leads to new inspiration and a new equilibrium, and is very healing indeed.

f

Pisces This week you may feel like retreating from the world’s business and madness into your own private refuge. The Hermit indicates that time alone helps you to recharge your batteries, and if that time is spent in beautiful nature it gives so much nurturing and reassurance, especially if you have some soul-searching to do...

with Sean Connolly of "The Balcony"

Sean Connolly shares his killer Crab Linguine recipe and explains exactly how you can recreate this simple pasta at home. Crab Carnival has been in full swing at Balcony Bar for a week now, with the standout dish being Sean’s Crab Linguine selling over 220 portions. After much pestering, the normally tight lipped chef has agreed to share this delicious recipe with his fans.

Ingredients:

Method:

1 x sprig of mint leaves 1 x handful of fresh parsley 1 x chilli 1 x lemon 50g x butter 500ml x cream 280g x crab meat 600g x linguine Canola oil Salt & pepper (to taste)

1. A good pasta dish needs a good sauce and that is the key to this dish. Firstly we start by making a lemon butter sauce to compliment the sweetness of the crab. In a pan bring 500ml of cream to a steady simmer and reduce until cream has reached desired thickness, remove from heat and add the butter with a pinch of salt, stirring continuously. 2. Once combined, return pan to the heat and add juice of one lemon. Bring to simmer and reduce for a further 2 minutes. Taste and set sauce aside. 3. Cook up a pot of fresh linguine until al dente, drain and set aside. 4. Chop one chilli finely, tear some mint leaves as well as chopping a handful of pasta. 5. In a hot pan, combine some canola oil, chopped chilli, mint leaves, snow crab, cooked pasta and a dash of water. Sauté for a few minutes. 6. Add desired amount of lemon butter sauce, a handful of parsley and sauté a little more. 7. Serve and enjoy !

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

SARAH ROYALL Founder Salty Luxe

Your most memorable travel experience? So hard to answer. I found myself in the jungles of Burma while tracking elephants & living with a hill tribe for a conservation project, I challenged everything I thought I knew while backpacking through Central America & I learnt to love small spaces in the months I spent on the road exploring California in our trusty Kombi. I’ll definitely never forget swimming with turtles in the Yucatan Peninsula Mexico, waking up on the beach in Turquoise Bay, Western Australia, taking a chopper ride over the Great Barrier Reef, vino in Loire Valley France, chasing waterfalls through Asia… oooooh no, now you got me started! Next hottest travel destination? The Philippines seems to be the trendy place to visit this year. It looks epic, I'd like to get there soon. Cuba is also on the radar & I'd like to visit sooner rather than later with the rapid changes happening. But we are off to Northern Sumatra on a surf trip in April, Indo in June & Morocco, Kenya & Tanzania in September. Finally getting to Africa, which has been on my bucket list forever! What’s the best travel tip you have learned? I learned this the hard way, but the best travel lesson (which is also a life lesson for me) is that you can't plan everything & actually, the best things happen when you least expect it. So just get on board for the ride! You’re all over the world but reside in Byron, what do you love most about home? You can be whoever you want to be. What have you found to be the biggest expense whilst away? Missing family & our dog Scarley. Is there anything you always take with you? My camera, swimmers & a good attitude (haha!) Do you have any tips for people wanting to get into travel photography? Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't do something. It's a competitive industry, but if you love it, you'll make it. Such is life. How much do you actually love airplanes? I'm sweaty just thinking about it. I actually hate it, kind of a strong word I know, but I get vertigo after long hauls & spend most of my time thinking 'what the hell is that noise!?'. Planes are a portal to another world though, you enter in 40 degree heat & exit in the snow – flying is magic really, so it's all worth it.
