Around Town This Week

Happy New Year! If you’re still feeling a little dusty after ringing in 2017, sign up for some spiritual healing at the Starlight Festival. Kicking off today in Bangalow, the annual meeting of conscious minds promises all the yoga, meditation, soul food, psychic readings and crystal singing bowl tunes you can take until Sunday. For those who prefer retail therapy, most local businesses (as well as the regional markets) are now back to normal trading hours following the holiday period. G’arn, now the holiday crowds have eased it’s as good a time as any to have a snoop around the new retail spaces now open at the top end of Fletcher St in Byron. If you’ve resolved to get creative in 2017, there’s plenty to keep you occupied this coming week, with a macramé plant hanger workshop next Tuesday (ages 14+) and a make-your-own mineral makeup session on Wednesday, both at 1pm, book at Workshops in Byron Bay via Eventbrite. This Saturday, people still in party mode would be wise to shimmy down to The Northern for Shake ‘n’ Bake 2017 with Boo Seeka, Lyall Moloney and Gold Member headlining The Backroom beat session from 7pm. On Sunday, you can also catch Bondi dance duo Sneaky Sound System (yep, they’re back!) at The Beach Hotel from 8pm. You’re Welcome.

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

Paradise Trashed, Peta Melanie

The early evening vibe on soul street was a colourful Byron Bay display enjoyed by families & the community, with travellers & tourists also soaking up the festivities, food & fun. Back at home, the young people next door were parting on happily & Bangalow Road was a steady stream for groups walking, riding and driving in & out of town. Early New Years day morning bottles littered the sides of the road. What was even more disturbing was a visit to our new local swimming spot, a pristine part of this paradise we have been loving for quiet summer holiday dips with the children. We came to a point along the path and there was a massive pile of rubbish that had been collected by the national park rangers. So many black plastic bags full of party trash and it stunk like stale alcohol. So while so many people are here for the summer holidays & to celebrate a transition from one year to the next, we must wake up & care about our actions & remember to respect the paradise we love. Talking of respect, a massive thank you to those who spent the first day of 2017 cleaning up the trash on the streets, beaches & sacred lakes. Congrats Peta your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “Paradise Trashed”? Keep the convo going! Dear Keenwa,

There’s a dude I’m quite keen on, but he only pays attention to me when he’s been on the frothies all day. What gives? Do you think the alcohol just opens him up emotionally to express himself? Or are the beer goggles responsible for his change in heart? - Lady In Waiting

Dear Lady In Waiting,

He sounds like a real catch. As Ghandi said, we must be the change we want to see in the world. You could hit the tinnies yourself all day and see if you get enough Dutch courage to ask old mate what the deal is, although it’s most likely you won’t care for his response by then, and will be well and truly cosy with an onlooker who does not seem so bad now you’ve had a few. The other way to solve the riddle is with some simple detective work. Whack some apple cider vinegar into the Nutribullet while he’s still sleeping off the night before, and serve him his ‘coldy’ upon rising. Be sure to whip enough to get a good head. Repeat and serve when the glass is empty. Observe behaviour. Make notes. Make decision accordingly. At the very least, if you do decide to stick around, your beloved will have happy gut flora.

Dear Keenwa,

I have a friend who is the definition of needy. I’m a mum of three with a career and a boatload of responsibilities. She has more issues than Vogue and I just can’t handle it any more. I didn’t realize how high maintenance she would be when we became friends, but now it’s just too much! How can I gracefully make my exit from this one-sided friendship? - Fair Weather Friend

Dear Fair Weather Friend,

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? It’s easy enough to block your mate from Facebook, but you’re not going to get rid of your own shadow that quickly. Taking into account the idea that your vibe attracts your tribe, you might want to take a good hard look at your own neediness. How’s it feel to be running around like a madwoman doing everything on your own? How would it feel to reach out to someone else like she does and ask for help? Have you let yourself be seen and supported by her or are you too good at the martyr game? Be a good friend to yourself and try asking her for something back, she might just surprise you. She might not, but in this crazy world we sure could do with a bit more self-reflection.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - “The world changes in direct proportion to the number of people willing to be honest about their lives.” - Armistead Maupin The anxiety of imperfection is the cultural condition of our time. The need to always be on, the compulsion to plaster a pictureperfect facade over whatever changing tides are happening beneath the surface. Playing a role so that people perceive us as good enough. Smart enough. Pretty enough. Professional enough. Hiding behind carefully cultivated masks all day. It’s exhausting. It’s bullshit. And nothing good, substantive, powerful or juicy can come from it. So let’s create a revolution. Let’s be honest about ourselves and our lives. Let’s drop the need to present a perfect facade. Drop the need to be always on, to hide the things that we struggle with, the things that make us feel less-than, ashamed, or not enough. Let’s keep it real. Lets air it out, let it breathe. Let’s just be US. Let’s strip off the B.S., shed the shame and drop brave little truth bombs about how we really feel today. Because we can only change ourselves (and then the world) by being honest. By keeping it real. Marinate on that and show up as you are today. Just as you are. Embrace what’s true for you. Embrace the duality of the true you- the mud and the lotus. Because that is real beauty, true power, absolute elegance. It’s also deeply wise and boldly brave. So empower yourself to keep it real. Because you are already enough.

The Biz

Local Business Discovered

Megan Holgate Divorce & Life Coach Business Philosophy: To help women to understand, divorce does not have to be detrimental to their lives, it can enhance your life and open up pathways that you may never have envisioned. I was inspired by my disastrous divorce against my senior International Investment Banker husband. I was determined that no other woman would ever have to experience what I was put through, to the detriment of our daughter’s future. My business model helps women create their best future possible for their children and themselves. Point of Difference: Having 25 years in the Financial Markets of London, Hong Kong & Sydney gives me an understanding of an extremely harsh, competitive environment, that demands excellence and results 24/7. I am a results driven coach and like to push my clients as far as I can to help them attain their best possible lives. Structure is paramount to achieve the end goal. We create the goal and work together to reach this goal, through a detailed and attainable action plan. Many embrace pathways they previously thought had been closed to them forever, as they regain their selfesteem and confidence, they frequently discover life can be extraordinary, leaving ordinary in their past. Success Story: One of my clients put her business idea on hold due to family obligations after her husband told her they ‘couldn’t afford to take financial risks’. When her marriage broke down, she realised this was her chance to create the life she wanted to live. She started baking at night and on weekends for functions and soon her orders were getting too big and now she has given up her day job and has a thriving business. She says she would never had known the feeling of inner-fulfillment if her marriage hadn’t ended and she had the opportunity to control her own life through rebuilding her confidence with my coaching.

Venus and Mars, the archetypes for relating, are travelling through watery Pisces; the longing for oneness, the need to merge and the holding on to highly romantic ideals can create an emotional high tide in any partnership. This will linger on at least until the end of January when Mars moves into Aries. During this month we also have to confront the painful side-effects of relationships, which we might want to drown in alcohol or sedate with drugs. Problems with personal boundaries might come up too. Mercury has a short retrograde stint in Sagittarius and any issues that have not been resolved in early December might pop up again, especially concerning travel or signing contracts. On Monday Mercury turns direct again but will be very slow and retracing its path, mainly in Capricorn, until the end of this month. From here on we are in a very special time: a whole month when all planets are in direct motion. This is a great time frame for moving forward in a bold and brave manner. This scenario has not happened since January 2013. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries With the 3 of Wands you are committed to putting your best foot forward. This way you set the vibe and you provide positive direction for your nearest and dearest. This attitude is very helpful for navigating the emotional undercurrents of this week.

h

a

Libra The 6 of Wands speaks of triumph, success and recognition by others. For Libra the ultimate victory can only be a situation that provides a win-win result for everyone involved, and which is designed to create more harmony in the long run. When you succeed you feel on top of the world and at one with it.

b

Taurus The Bull is looking forward to an emotionally satisfying and sensually gratifying week. The 2 of Cups represents love in action and everything you do has a foundation of celebrating love and connection. This is also the perfect time to make an effort to bring healing into a relationship that has been difficult or painful lately.

Scorpio The 9 of Wands indicates that you might be locked into a worry pattern that clouds your everyday perception and acts like a wet blanket on your mental well-being. Giving yourself a hard time does not achieve anything; whenever possible practise the attitude of gratitude for the things that are working well in your life. This improves your mood and outlook.

Gemini The current astrological flavour combined with the 2 of Wands indicates that your busy Gemini mind might have trouble making concrete decisions. You might know the end results you want to achieve, but you might be confused about how to get there. There may also be arguments concerning joint ventures.

i

Cancer The Princess of Wands provides mental and

Capricorn The Adjustment card asks you to bring your attention to any aspect of your life that’s out of balance and harmony, whether it be relationships, legal situations, or finance. Now is the perfect time to contemplate how to simplify your circumstances. Your own inner alignment and confidence increase with every authentic, responsible and ethical action.

k

Leo The 4 of Wands symbolises the ending of one cycle

physical agility which might help you to fight those negative moods that creep up on you from time to time. You might feel more impulsive, even provocative, this week and your defensive tendencies could create unnecessary confrontations, especially with your nearest and dearest.

Sagittarius The Queen of Wands is often called the queen of compassion. You might feel self-assured, optimistic and passionate, while having an open ear, mind and heart for other people’s troubles. Counselling others may well be one of the most rewarding ways to express your deepest, inner essence.

d

e

and your readiness for new beginnings. You are eager to grasp new opportunities and you might get very excited about new developments. Take a moment to contemplate and recognise the successful completion of your last project before you move on.

Aquarius The Sun Tarot card implies that you have ample energy this week. Your light shines forth brilliantly in a myriad of insightful and unique ways. Your enthusiasm inspires others and any teamwork this week could bring great satisfaction and excellent results for everyone involved. Spending time with children is also very rewarding.

l

f

Virgo The Queen of Cups would like to inspire you to take time out for meditation and contemplation. Immerse yourself into the healing arms of nature or deep flowing water. You might find that inner communion makes your creative juices flow and brings you relaxed and embodied peace.

Pisces The Prince of Wands makes the affairs of the heart his pre-occupation; he promises romance and fulfilment. You may feel confident, passionate and daring enough to pursue a newly found creative venture or any other adventure that spices up your life. Travelling might be on the cards too.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

NICHOLAS SERGI Byron Music

You sell more than just instruments and music. Can you tell us a little about the Byron Music School? It’s our own little music education hub – we have the best group of local tutors and a growing list of services from guitar, piano, vocals, violin through to computer music technology tuition.

Is there any new and upcoming artists we should watch out for? Some local freshies out there... Cinema

Wristys and Seaside. Checkout our Youtube page for more!

Do you play any instruments yourself? Guitar is my thing. I don’t mind belting away on drums either.

Who has been your biggest inspiration? My Dad, he’s a

hard worker and good guy.

Where did you passion and love for music come from? Again my Dad – he is a guitar player. I’ve always been drawn to the guitar, it’s shape and sonic beauty!

Favourite musician/artist/band? Too many to choose from. I’m listening to Stone Temple Pilots at the moment, Scott Weiland (RIP) has an amazing voice. What does a local’s day out in Byron look like?

I’m a simple guy, coffee from any of our great cafes, swim at any of our beaches then a beer at any of our pubs.

Dead or alive, who would you have a whisky with? Johnny Walker, he’d have the good stuff!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get involved in the music industry? Hard work

and persistence seems to be the key.

You are also heavily involved in supporting the local Byron community, what’s up next for you? 2017 will

be a big one, there will be more from us at the festivals and supporting local talented musos!

Find out more about Byron Music and whats happening in 2017 at byronmusic.com.au @byronmusicshop or check out their youtube channel
