Thursday • 6 October • 2016

It doesn’t matter what time you wake up this Saturday…whenever you do, pop along to the Byron Youth Centre. The Flea Market will be dishing up vintage, recycled and homemade delights while The Elliotts sing a few tunes. In Mullumbimby the Spring Mama & Me markets are also on at the Leagues Club. This market is all about locally owned, sustainable family products. There’s going to be 60 stalls plus a petting zoo, craft zone, pony rides and free family yoga. Also in Mullum, The Curly Cousins are doing a couple of shows for the kids at the Drill Hall. On Sunday at the Byron Yoga Centre there’s going to be a luscious yoga workshop with the multi-talented super star Toni Childs from 10am to 3pm. This workshop will include her acclaimed ‘Because You’re Beautiful’ 90 minute yoga session and give you techniques to help you build your relationship with yourself. Tickets are $65 from byronyoga. com. On Tuesday in Lismore, Mark Dapin (The Chaser) and Charles Firth (former editor of Ralph mag) will take the stage at 7pm for NORPA’s Big Think event ‘A State of Indignation’. They will be discussing everything that gets their goat covering politics, terror, cultural diversity and tolerance. Enjoy! Photography Credit: Carly Brown

Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

I’m about to have my first bub and my friends want to host a “blessingway” for me. Sadly, I’m really not down with having my belly covered in henna while a bunch of women chant and massage me with crystals. How do I break the news to my gal pals that I’d rather get a pedicure and eat a cheeseburger? - Mumma To Be

Dear Mumma To Be,

How long have you lived on the Goldy? You must be loving the convenience of city on the beach living. And you only have to sit in the bumper-to-bumper traffic once, everything your need being in the same handy location. You can fulfill your burger cravings (and even get donuts from a major chain for dessert) at the same mall you can catch a tan, a pedi and a little Botox to cover up the pregnancy wrinkles. And I know you don’t like crystal massages but how good (and affordable) is the other GC crystal hey? Don’t worry about your Byron gal pals, I’m pretty sure they’re unable to make it to your baby shower but you’ll meet plenty of new friends at the hairdresser’s when you’re getting your roots done, and discussing your joint C-sections.

Dear Keenwa,

What’s the protocol for the morning after an adult sleepover? Am I required to make breakfast or can I show my new friend the door at the first light? - Pillow Talker

Dear Pillow Talker,

Do you mean to say you are considering the idea of missing kundalini yoga or your morning transcendental meditation session for a sleepover? What would your guru say? Where are you finding these slumber party candidates? Obviously anyone who doesn’t do downward dog at least 9 times a week, or speak even basic Sanskrit, isn’t worth spending time with. The next thing we know you’ll be eating gluten and riding an ordinary thruster surfboard. Boundaries sister! Unless your ‘vagina’ is the name of a bed & breakfast on Airbnb, you have full permission to pash and dash babes.

Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Business Philosophy: At the Byron Bay Film Festival they like to dream big and now that the festival has reached its 10th year (insert round of applause here), the big dreams burn even brighter. Festival Director, Jaimee explains, “We’re excited by the future and we have a team who share a common vision. We punch above our weight, keeping both a global and local focus.” Previously Jaimee worked in the commercially driven international film and television industries, but it was the raw art and untethered creativity that independent filmmakers unleashed which inspired her to get involved with the festival. Jaimee adds “the festival gives me a space to both support talented creatives and to build a Byron event which brings the world to us.” Point Of Difference: The Byron location creates a unique experience for visiting filmmakers, who find they have never screened to such an expressive and honest audience. Once a year for 10 days a world-class film festival event hits the Northern Rivers, highlighting the best Byron has to offer and attracting the kind of visitors who respect and love our town. Jaimee says “I’d like to think it’s our passion and the fact that we remain idealistic after 10 years on is what keeps us fresh. We keep it down-to-earth, relaxed and warm with an inclusive vibe that sets us apart from some of the other film festivals out there. We’re an evolving event too, with a passion for new technology like Virtual Reality and switching our town on to its possibilities.” Success Story: In 10 years there are many stories to tell and it is impossible to pick one over the others. It’s about the bigger pictures as Jaimee sums up, “we’ve had a number of collaborative projects come from filmmakers meeting at the festival, as well as from filmmakers and audience members connecting. I think success is inspiring people through the stories on the screen and challenging people to look outside of their bubble. But success is also creating the opportunity for good old-fashioned entertainment by providing great films, fun parties and the opportunity to meet the talent behind the cameras.”

What are your thoughts on “After Party”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents and you’re in to win a double pass to a film of your choice at The Byron Bay Film Festival *Excludes special events.

Solution To Housing In Byron?, Chris Black _____________________________________

In response to “Home Of Magic” lock the gates! The facts are that Byron Bay is as expensive to live in as Sydney (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 - hate to think what the 2016 Census will reveal). Rent or buy, you’re screwed unless you’re on an executive salary, or happen to sell alcohol or real estate. For the majority of people in this Shire, housing is now completely unaffordable. Too many tourists, an over-inflated housing bubble, and a refusal to accept that increased density is inevitable means that we are living unsustainably. People who work in this town must live elsewhere so that a lucky few can rent out their garage for $400+ a week to outsiders. When are we going to get real and have a proper community debate about what is needed to stop this Shire from becoming another ‘Coastal Theme Park’? Or are we happy to see growing homelessness and dispersal of locals to other towns? Congrats Chris, your submission has won you a double pass to a general admission film of your choice at The Byron Bay Film Festival! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize.

After Party, Anonymous _____________________________________

After a wonderful sunny long weekend, I was walking my dog on Tallow beach when I came across something that makes my blood boil. Close to the footpath onto the beach from the campsite/ caravan park, a post party scene. Half full wine bottles, beer bottles, plastic drink bottles, bits of rubbish, discarded underwear, a couple of half buried fire sites. You had a great night, didn’t you? You carried it onto the beach, why can’t you take your rubbish back too? Instead you leave it to people ( often dog walkers) like me to clean up after you, hoping there’s nothing nasty hiding in the sand. You come to Byron for the unspoilt beauty of our beaches, please clean up after yourselves. Otherwise next time you’re here, you’ll be complaining about the state of the place and remembering how beautiful it used to be.

Thursday may prove difficult on the emotional level; inner conflict may lead to taking unwise risks, just because we feel compulsive or anxious. The tensions remain for the next few days; a Sun/Pluto square has the potential to bring out the shadow in many of us if we are not conscious and aware about how we are feeling and what we are projecting. Don’t expect to find inner peace and harmony before Tuesday, which is an excellent day to get back on track and maybe have a healing session or conversation. It is also the perfect day for a business meeting, congress or for presenting your original ideas to an interested audience. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries Most of this week might feel to you as if you are in an emotional desert; your usual upbeat and optimistic nature might be suffocated by a ‘wet blanket’. The 5 of Cups symbolises a lack of fulfilment and loss of drive. When you feel this inner emptiness it is difficult to remember that it will pass soon to make room for your true self to shine once more.

h

Taurus The 9 of Disks speaks of an uplifting profit or gain that should be falling into your lap. It’s not just good luck but the result of your inner alignment, following your heart and putting all the hard work into your objective. Now the time is ripe to graciously accept the positive outcome.

i

Gemini The 8 of Disks challenges you to make a concentrated effort this week and to absolutely avoid getting distracted or down-hearted, no matter what presents itself to you. As you apply yourself totally, add a dose of patience and perseverance. By Tuesday you will be able to see some promising results on the horizon.

j

Cancer This week the 8 of Wands demands flexibility, skilful communication and swift action. There is no room for the Crab’s default mode of getting defensive and cranky when things get difficult. You need to strike while the iron is hot and every strike needs to be precise to exactly hit the core of what you are dealing with.

k

Leo The 7 of Swords is drawn for the second week; this indicates that there is no running away or trying to cover up the mental and emotional challenges you are going through. Imagine you are your best friend and give yourself positive advice and motivation to work through futile and self-sabotaging thought patterns.

l

Virgo The 2 of Wands represents an ‘all or nothing’ mindset, which might not be very constructive during the challenging days until Tuesday! You might burn a bridge or two and have to spend time and energy on repair work later. Nevertheless, sometimes it is extremely liberating to summon all your power and blast away any perceived obstacles in your way.

a

Libra The 4 of Cups symbolises the deep need for peace, harmony and stability. This challenging week might leave you longing for it, but might not grant you the inner satisfaction of attaining it. The more you try to make it happen by controlling your feelings or trying to control situations, the more frustration is guaranteed.

b

Scorpio This week the 7 of Disks invites you to investigate your innermost motivations. Are you driven by the need to avoid failure and therefore play it safe, or are you inspired and fired up by achieving great success? As you question your motives and choices you might be able to open up to new strategies and ponder alternatives.

c

Sagittarius This week your best bet is to concentrate on your creative passion and find fulfilment within. The Prince of Cups represents enormous amounts of feelings that need to be channelled into meaningful outlets. Since the astrological flavour of this week is rather complicated, the heart connection to friends or a lover might not be enough and may leave you unsatisfied.

d

Capricorn The 6 of Cups symbolises the ability to nurture and be nurtured through meaningful relationships. You might want to spend more time with your family, especially your children, and take a break from being so focused on work and achievements. Your kindness and goodwill may play a big role in soothing the frustrations of your loved ones this week.

e

Aquarius The Emperor is the archetype of strong, masculine and benevolent leadership. Your ability to detach and see the bigger picture is much needed this week and your visionary ability can assist others to get back on track too. Your business sense is strong and could pay off on Tuesday.

f

Pisces After much soul-searching during the last two weeks you tamed the inner beast and you are emerging with courage, resolve and composure. The Strength Tarot card rekindles your passion for life and you can open a new chapter in your love live as well as finding fulfilment in a creative outlet.

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / FOLLOW THE FEELS You already know the answer. You already know just what to do. First thought, right thought. We’ve learned to second guess, to dumb down our intuition and instincts in favour of weighing careful columns of Pros and Cons, in favour of over-thinking and under-feeling. Look back at a decision you made in the past that just wasn’t right (business, life, relationships, anything). Wasn’t the right time or the right fit or the right action to take. Did you do your due diligence but still have a hunch? Did some part of you feel it wasn’t right? Did you trudge on anyway because: fear or logic or too good to miss or might as well or no time like the present or don’t want to miss out or what if? How we make decisions is how our life unfolds. If we exclusively use logic and pie charts and pros and cons to make our decisions and in doing so discard our gut feelings, intuitions and instincts as unimportant, weak, or witchy...we lose out. We walk uphill more than is necessary. Our life lacks flow. We become prey. We become reactive. Decisions become anxiety ridden. We vacillate, debate and nail bite. And then...we often end up in situations that, well...suck. Sometimes a little and sometimes a lot. Engaging your instincts isn’t all rainbows and good vibes. It doesn’t always give us the answers we want. Clarissa Pinkola Estés puts it this way, “there are times when it’s reports are painful and almost too much to bear.” But we must not throw away our gut feelings because it’s hard, or painful or intangible. Our instincts serve to protect and guide us. To shine light on our shadow sides and on external situations. Your instincts and intuition know what is best, what is good, what is right. And what is not. If hindsight is 20/20 then intuitive foresight is 100/100. You have instincts for a reason. Use them. Just follow the feels. The answer is there.
