This week is National Youth Week so there are a couple of sweet events happening for our small to medium sized citizens. ‘Bounce’ is on this Saturday at YAC with bubble soccer, a grafﬁti workshop and a bouncy castle. Then on Sunday there’s a skate battle going down at Bruns Skate park with a free BBQ. Did you ever think you like to host your own radio show? Our awesome community radio station, Bay FM, is currently looking for presenters. Submissions are due Monday at 5pm so you have the weekend to cook up some weird and wonderful program ideas. Developed over two years by McGregor Coxall in close consultation with the community and our local councillors it is worthy of support and debate. The plan has the potential to seriously enhance the disintegrating face of Byron over the next 20 years & ensure this quirky but ﬂawed diamond keeps pace with its sparkling future.

So why the hell are Ballina and Lennox getting a shark barrier and not Byron?!? Between the Wreck, the Pass, Wategoes, Tallows, etc, I doubt that there would be a fraction of the number of surfers further south than there are on a busy day in Byron! Considering we are the second most popular tourist destination in NSW after Sydney, you’d think the big-wigs on Macquarie St. would be doing more to protect the precious tourist industry that makes our little town tick! Having a yellow buoy bobbing out in the Bay or the occasional helicopter ﬂy-over does not have the same reassurance as some sort of physical barrier between me and the nasties in the big bad ocean. Now I’m not advocating a shark net that will tangle all the innocent marine life, but surely we should be afforded the same type of protection as our friends to the south!!!
