Around Town This Week
Need a good laugh? There are plenty to be had this weekend in Lismore, with renowned comic Tom Gleeson taking to the stage at NORPA’s Lismore City Hall theatre on Friday, followed by funnyman Andy Saunders Saturday (shows from 7:30pm). Frank Woodley of famed comedy duo Lano and Woodley will also perform a special show for kids aged 8-12 on Saturday at 2pm. If you’d rather have a bit of a boogie, get yourself over to Mullumbimby Golf Club on Saturday night for the third installment of Sounds Good Soundsystem’s late night dance parties. Doors open at 8pm, with DJs including Al Royale, Lippo, Mr Ha! Yes!, Captain Cain and Alfonso delivering the deep techy beats. This weekend also proffers the perfect opportunity to get your kit off for a good cause by joining the World Naked Bike Ride. Held in cities across the globe, the clothing-optional biketivism ride aims to raise awareness of cyclist safety and help promote greener ways of living. Riders are asked to assemble at the Byron train station from 1:30pm on Sunday before the ride kicks off at 3pm. For the best view of the action, head to Balcony, which will have live music from 3pm. There’ll also be a nude ride in Nimbin on Saturday at 11am. Enjoy! Words: Sarah Reid, @ecotravelist

Dear Byron rental market, To get straight to the point, pets are an intrinsic part of life. Many have helped us through dark times and are shiny beacons of happiness. The blanket discrimination against having a furry friend makes acquiring a humble abode next to impossible, in what is already a diabolically competitive market. I understand concerns for the environment, worries about property damage etc, but these worries are based off generalisation and assumption. If an owner seems responsible, reliable and kind, their pet will be too. Give pets and their owners a chance - the discrimination has to stop right MEOW. JUDGING EYES, Anonymous Parents of toddlers, have you ever been so deprived of "grown up" interaction that you happily organised a breakfast catch up with a mate? Catch is, your little person slept horribly the night before and you know they will be a screaming, whining mess in public. You still really need that grown up chat for your own sanity though..... Cue, ABC Kids on the iPhone. Now I'm not usually a "screen time" parent but this is my only opportunity. All is going well until I start to feel the judging eyes of the entering patrons at the local cafe. The occasional sideways glance from a latte sipping baby boomer followed by a slow headshake. Please don't be so judgemental as you just don't know what kind of day, week or even year that parent is having. Screen time isn't great, fact, but it could just be the only 30 mins they watch so that mum or dad can continue being awesome parents with a mentally sound mind :p Congrats JUDGING EYES, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted Voucher! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “JUDGING EYES”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

Dear Keenwa, My bestie is hot, university educated, and has a 9-5 job in Lismore. She's just started dating a cennofunded surfer, how do I break it to her that she's down-dating? - Uptown Friend Dear Uptown Friend, The struggle between mixed-collared couples is REAL, just look when Steve asked Miranda in Sex and the City, “what's wrong with corduroy?” To which she replied, “I don't have enough time to tell you what's wrong with corduroy.” Yes, there may be some initial lost in translation awkward dinner moments, but for all you know your mate's lover is a tantric God bringing A Whole New World to her life, a-la Aladdin and Princess Jasmine style. Of course modern relationships always work out like they do in the Disney movies, don't forget stay-at-home Steve also said, “after a while, you just wanna be the one who makes you laugh.” Dear Keenwa, I was attacked by a jellyfish last week and a kind stranger who was eavesdropping as I retold the tale to a friend at the health food store informed me that had I been eating chaga mushrooms it never would have happened. Is this true? - Chaga Fish Dear Chaga Fish, I once saw a medicinal mushroom pull a kitten from a burning house with it's bare stalk, but asking something without a brain, heart, bones or respiratory system to smell your white blood cell count before it decides whether to sting you or not is ludicrous. As well as expensive, chaga mushrooms are immune boosters, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, anticancer (as is quinoa may I add) but here's some more food for thought, did you know jellyfish have only one mouth where they consume food, excrete waste and reproduce? Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - DON'T WASTE THE YES Saying YES can feel so good in the moment, but oftentimes, NO is more liberating in the long run. Most of us face this dilemma on the daily, so here are a couple gems on Yes Vs. No from some very wise women: 1. Business guru Marie Forleo's strategy sums it up pretty well: "if it's not a hell yes, it's a no." Clear. Simple. Right on the money. Follow the feels. If the feels aren't there, the yes is wasted. 2. Writer Danielle Laporte reminds us that "no makes way for yes." So by saying no to that thing that wasn't a hell yes, you're making space for something that is. Again...don't waste the yes. Boomshakala. 3. And if you're worried about all those sweet souls you're saying no to, try this on for size‌nutritional biochemist and wellness guru Dr. Libby Weaver explains that by saying yes all the time, you deny people the opportunity to find other resources. Resources that might even be a better fit for the job. Can you dig it? Service versus servitude, people. You don't need to be everybody's everything. People don't like you less for saying no, they respect you more for keeping it real. Not every opportunity will serve your highest good. Not every invitation needs to be accepted. Reframe the FOMO. Hold space in your life for the hell yeses by flexing your NO muscle. Practice. The more you use it the more dexterous it will become.

The tide is high this week; hot passion and intense feelings might overwhelm many of us. With Venus retrograde in Aries, the warrior woman archetype gets centre-stage attention. Relationships are scrutinised and many people need time to reflect and review how and who they love. Aries is prone to jump to hasty conclusions though! There is plenty of time to take a deep look at your own wants, needs and values; Venus does not cover any new ground until the middle of May... There is room for deep and meaningful conversations while Sun and Mercury form a productive sextile with Pluto, the great transformer. On Monday the Full Moon in Virgo, with Sun, Mercury, Chiron and Neptune in Pisces, opens a window for healing old, emotional wounds. The time is ripe to become more aware and compassionate to your inner critic and find more equilibrium within. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g
a
h
b
Aries The Prince of Cups represents the lover within; this is a great time to examine your desires and how much fulfilment you allow yourself. Avoid making someone else responsible for any unlived passions. It is up to you to acknowledge your creative, romantic, sexual and spiritual needs and find ways to satisfy them. Taurus The Princess of Wands is on a path of selfliberation; she won’t be held back by any old fears or outdated security needs. Her upbeat, optimistic and self-assured ways may inspire you to take the road less travelled too. A creative, spiritual or romantic adventure might just be around the next corner...
i
Gemini The Temperance card focuses on finding more inner harmony and equilibrium. This is not easily mastered by the twins who easily sway from one extreme to another. One way to find more balance is to think about what two polar opposites have in common; by blending their deepest essences inner peace might come.
j
Cancer The 2 of Wands represents vitality, energy and assertive action. You are willing to stand up for yourself and others and you actually might as well enjoy wielding influence. Your zest for life is contagious but occasionally you may overwhelm others with your new-found love for risk-taking and adventure.
Libra The 7 of Disks indicates a tense time. You might assess a certain situation as extremely negative and get trapped in your own limitations and projections. It is important to ponder alternatives and be open-minded about new strategies. As one door closes another opens and gives you an opportunity to work through some old fears.
Scorpio The 2 of Cups is all about love – how you give it, how you receive it and how you find it within yourself. With Venus retrograde for the next few weeks, your values, wants and needs are up for revision, and you might feel the longing for healthier and more fulfilling relationships. Compassion and forgiveness for the trials and tribulations of the past, acceptance of what is and absolute self-love are necessary.
c
Sagittarius This week the Prince of Disks asks you to slow down and look after your physical needs. Don’t push yourself to do more, just work smarter and sort things out by priorities. The Disks relate to the way we approach our work and health, and neglect in one area soon brings challenges in the other. As you take care of little things, big things follow...
d
Capricorn The 3 of Disks speaks of much work that has to be done, but also of great results that can be achieved. Clarity of goals and manageable plans are the foundation for your success. It is also important to note your level of commitment; half-hearted input means half-hearted outcome.
k
e
l
f
Leo The Queen of Cups symbolises an inward journey into the realms of feminine receptivity. Whether you are a man or a woman you might feel the overwhelming need to retreat and find nurturing in the arms of Mother Nature, near a lake, the ocean or the forest. This gives you the inspiration you need and recharges your batteries. Virgo With the Full Moon in your sign and the 2 of Swords drawn, you would like to keep things calm and peaceful. Your unwillingness to rock the boat could be (mis)interpreted as disconnection or disengagement. Only you can tell if you are avoiding facts, emotions or unpleasantness. You might feel forced to make decisions or take sides.
Aquarius With the 6 of Wands things are definitely improving this week and you intuitively know that you are coming out on top of any game. It feels like the universe is lining up opportunities for you; all you have to do is seize them. Victory feels best though if it is a winwin situation for all involved. Pisces With the Knight of Cups drawn, romance might be coming your way, or a delightful birthday celebration with friends and family who offer you much love and attention. This is a sensitive and heart-warming time; some of your heart’s longings might be fulfilled...

Q&A
A Quick Chat With ...
LAUREN CAMPBELL
Owner and Potter, Sit Still Lauren Ceramics How did you start your journey to potter? I was 28 and working for the dollar in Sydney CDB, pretty miserable knowing that there was a little creative girl inside, trying to talk to me but I wasn’t sure how to listen. It was my Dad who triggered a change. He said to me “Lauren, you realise that you are the only person in our family that works in an office." After this little lightening bolt, I started listening to my heart instead of my head. It was challenging at first but like any muscle training it got easier. Where do you find your inspiration? I find my inspiration from all sorts of places. Not one specific thing, the ladies that I shared the studio space with at TAFE are always a source of light and inspiration. That and the combination of intention and happenstance. Setting off with an idea, allowing it to evolve into something completely different. Letting go of control and embracing the evolution of what it wants to be as opposed to getting stuck on the outcome. Letting go of expectations, something you have to quickly learn as a potter. You also run pottery workshops, do you have to be artistic to get involved? Everyone can be artistic. It’s just more prominent in some than it is in others. Like everything in life. The days are just about reconnecting with earth and enjoying the process. It allows people to be still in our busy lives. Do you have a favourite mix of colours to work with? Arghhh! Is there a limit to the amount of answers for this? Haha but seriously? The glazing world is crazy challenging and to be able to nail all the colours of the rainbow is the dream! Check back in with me in 100 years time. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start a creative hobby? Hmmmm, just go for it, get in there and keep trying different things until something resonates with you. What are you drawn to? When something allows you to think with your heart instead of your head then you’re on the right path. What’s to lose? Are there any specific artists or photographers who you inspire you? Another big question! Let’s see, Shoji Hamada (Japanese potter), Anne Ronjat (French/Australian potter), Adam Buick (English potter), Paulus Berensohn (pinch pot artist), Grant Cown (my best friend and illustration artist). What drink goes best in one of your mugs? Ohhh when it’s hot, I love an iced peppermint and cacao tea on almond milk with a blob of ice cream and that in reverse when it’s hot. But for the most, coffee is the feedback I get.
