Up for a wee little day trip this week? The Archibald Portrait Prize from 2015 is now on display at the wonderful Tweed Regional Art Gallery over in Murwillumbah. If you don’t have lunch at the café gazing at the view, head into town where there’s a great sushi-train spot. We also recommend you have a poke around the sweet-as-pie Sugar Mill Studio, just off the main drag. If you’re feeling inspired after that little adventure, have a think about entering the Byron Arts Classic. Entries are now open and you can find out all the info at the Byron Community Centre website. In at the centre this Sunday you might want to check out the Harmonic Temple. There’s going to be an enchanting combination of visual and sonic artists such as Deya Dova and Kalya Scintilla and Eve Olution, out of the USA. Another option is checking out the Shamanic Medicine Forum ‘Somara’ that’s happening at the Starseed Gardens in Byron. Workshops have been going all week and this weekend is going to be packed with international and local speakers. Our community is always evolving and for the most part its for the better. But I also see how we let our community down in the most unnecessary ways. We all want to blame our council or the travellers for all our problems but lets take a moment and look at ourselves. I think of the human interactions we have daily in this town and how we could better serve our community as ambassadors. I’m always gob smacked when I hold the door for someone and they simply walk through or I stop to let someone cross the road and they ignore me like I don’t exist. The courtesy to acknowledge this type of gesture would be dually rewarding and go a long way in teaching our future generations. Chivalry and kindness seem to be dying and its our duty to keep them alive, so like the Hawaiian people say they “Practice Aloha” we too should look at kindness acts (and the acknowledgement for them) in the same manner. If we don’t practice they essentially don’t exist.
