This Saturday the place to be is at the Double Barrel Film Premier at The Brewery. The doco follows a Peruvian surfer’s dream of turning a crumbling oil-dominated town into Peru’s first sustainable surf town. The film has already aired in Peru and California, now this is the highly anticipated Australian premier. A Karma Keg will be on offer and tasty food is being put on by Harvest. Some of the muso’s who play on the soundtrack are performing live, including James Greer and Aquila Young. Grab your ticket early from Eventbrite or check out doublebarrelfilm.com.au for the full lowdown on the film. Over in Mullum there’s another gig on Saturday night which will also be super sweet. Local favourites Walrus & The Carpenter are playing at the Court House Hotel. Come and enjoy lead singer Mat Akehurst’s unique, husky vocals and awesome folky support acts Ben Allan and Rebecca Ireland. Tickets are only $10 at the door. But can we please be a little more discerning when we share our favourite things about Byron? I’ve recently returned home after a few years travel and when I go back to the waterholes that once had a handful of people, I come across loads of tourists and foreigners and randoms. Fair enough, they want to enjoy this place too but when they don’t respect the environment or the energy of the place, it ruins it for the rest of us who remember how it used to be. Can we keep these places special and not tell every random person we meet about them? I like local-ness. I like peace. I like space (now I sound like an old woman but you know what I mean).

__________________________________________ It’s par for the course, living in Byron, that we put up with our fair share of freeloaders, phoney’s and frauds, who weasel their way in under the guise of some new “hippie boho gypsy” scheme or another. Whether it’s some voodoo health magic, dodgy clothes “from India” (made in China) or “ethically imported, original, one off, handmade, authentic” blah, blah whatever. I expect that from dodgy street peddlers. But I’m utterly fed up with out-of-towner’s coming to our precious little cove, claiming original this, 100% sterling silver that, when after a purchase the “silver” goes brown, your skin goes green and you ﬁnd the exact same “unique sterling silver” on eBay for a quarter of the price. One new store in particular should be ashamed of themselves. A GF of mine got an allergy from their so-called “sterling silver”. We don’t want your crap! Bring authenticity back to Byron!
