There’s so much going on with the Byron Bay Surf Fest, including some sweet side events such as the Bikini Bird pop up shop at the Atlantic. Drop by on Thursday 23rd between 5pm and 8pm for a glass of bubbles at the launch party and check out The Cote D’Azur Exhibition, curated by CAPTAINANDTHEGYPSYKID for The Beach People. This Saturday is also Second Hand Saturday – the biggest garage sale day on the North Coast. There are over 600 garage sales listed throughout the region. On Saturday, Bay Lane is also going to be humming with a free pop up music and art event from 4pm. The council is putting on the wee little festival, closing off the lane and filling it with art, music, dance and kids activities. Next Wednesday after the Surf Fest, you can still catch some surf action as Stephanie Gilmour presents her doco at the Community Centre at 7pm. ‘Stephanie In The Water’ follows Steph over three years and after the film, the five times world champion will be doing an exclusive Q&A. All Tied Up Clark Kent __________________________________________ Surfing at the Pass can be a truly death-defying feat at the best of times – between the surf schools, beginner kooks, dive boats & local masses – but surely we don’t need to unnecessarily add to the carnage by some surfers choosing to eschew wearing leg ropes! I’m all for not being tied down by “The Man” & appreciate the intrinsic allure of the freedom associated with surfing, but there is a time & place for everything. Middle of the day on a long weekend or the height of summer is perhaps not the best time to have your fibreglass torpedo off the chain & endangering others. If you want to ‘unleash’ your inner old-school hipster, you may want to consider somewhere a little bit less crowded & already dangerous than the Pass...or even better, just wear a leggy like the rest of us!

Castles Made Of… Anonymous __________________________________________ I am visiting this area for the first time and am in awe of the natural beauty of the beaches. What I am not in awe of is the dog owners not picking up after their dogs poop on the beach. What’s that all about? In two hours saw three separate occasions including one dog that pooped on my sons sandcastle! I’d like to say something but not sure what response I’d get. What a shame to let your beautiful beaches be abused by negligent or uncaring dog owners.

Isn’t this another charming thing Byron is famous for? How can we stop the council from ripping off it’s own locals? Not happy! Response from Byron Shire Council: Garage sales need to stay behind a property boundary and not held on roadside verges or street corners. Byron Shire Council’s governance manager Ralph James said Council often receives complaints about the “popping up” of roadside garage sales on street corners. Complaints about the stalls were on safety due to tripping hazards, cars parking on corners and the visual clutter of the items. Hotspots include Byron Bay’s Tennyson, Jonson and Browning Streets. Garage sales are a great way to recycle things you don’t use any longer and make a bit of money. You do not need to apply for a permit to hold a garage sale on your property. Just ensure the sale, including any signs, are inside your property boundary. It’s also a great idea to invite other family members or friends to bring along their items for sale as this provides a wider selection of goods. And if car parking is tight, think about moving your car so you can provide sufficient car parking for buyers. Plus, as a courtesy, let your neighbours know that you are holding a garage sale.
