The launch of Deus Ex Machina’s winter collection is on tonight from 5 to 8pm at their shop on Lawson Street. Former Men at Work front man, Colin Hay is playing at the Byron Community Centre this Saturday at 7pm. Hay has now recorded 11 solo albums and enjoyed a colourful, long career. Phone 6685 6807 for tickets ($59). On Sunday, hundreds of people will be heading to beautiful Bangalow for the annual Billycart Derby. This is a much loved community event with good old-fashioned fun. Competitors race in their own homemade billy carts down the main street of Bangalow, cheered on by a fun-loving crowd. If you’re after a different pace, there’s also a Yoga Immersion Weekend at Red Tent that goes from 10am to 4pm each day. Chad Kohlcze __________________________________________ What makes a ‘Good Man’?, was the question asked at a recent Uncle Project gathering. Do you know one? Are you one? Is your dad one? Does it matter? I have to first apologise, as I’m not here with any magical ‘5 Steps to Success’ response. Nor am I a devoted yogi or zen master. I have never written a Self Development book, nor am I a Social Studies lecturer. The conferences I hold, consist mainly of my children and sometimes a member or two from our Suffolk share house joins in. I am the coordinator of The Uncle Project, and I’m here to share with the men of the broader community what was spoken during a round circle of ordinary Byron men just before crowning the ‘Uncle of the Year’ recently. Young and old men (6yrs to 66yrs) of all interests and professions thought a ‘Good Man’ is; kind, honours friendships, empathetic, living in integrity, mate-ship, honest, inclusive, responsible & respectful. Do they do that in the middle of the night? As they just randomly appear. This morning as I commuted into Byron for work, I noticed a lovely hot pink was used to highlight these impending disasters on Bangalow Road. Is this the same Roa D’Art that I first noticed a couple of years ago around Nimbin area? Anyhow, much appreciated, I just hope for safety’s sake the anonymous painter isn’t risking his own life during this pursuit for the safety of others.

But, you know what, I kinda like it! Sure it’s a pain in the ass with the road closures and sporty people making me feel guilty for the extra late-night pie I had, but I think these kind of events add a great mix to the usual Byron Spirit / Crystal / Aura Enhancement Festivals that are pervasive and seem to dominate our local event calendar. These are exactly the kind of visitors we need to be attracting! They come to town, have a great time, get to enjoy all the amazing activities we have to offer, have a couple of drinks but are too tired to cause any problems and go back home to tell their friends and family what an awesome time they had in Byron Bay...we couldn’t hope for better brand ambassadors for our fair town!!!
